Jenks Extended
2/6/2009
Bobby Jenks has received a 2-year extension for $1.7M per year. Teams just don't have much money, and this is being reflected in the contracts. Team friendly deal here. |

Doug Davis an Indian
2/10/2009
Doug Davis signs a 3-year deal with the Indians, totaling $5.6M. The last year is a player option. Seems like another team friendly deal, though no one will confuse Davis with an ace. |

O-Cab Considering League Minimum?!
2/12/2009
There are reports that the Yankees are close to signing Orlando Cabrera for $400K. What?! This almost makes me want to go out and sign this guy. But I'll stick with Burris, and see where Cabrera ends up. |

Valverde a Ranger
2/14/2009
Jose Valverde just gave Rangers fans a little love for Valentine's Day. He signed a 3-year $8.8M deal. He was an All-Star in 2009, before missing much of the rest of the season with injury. |

Dotel to the Indians
2/17/2009
The Indians pick up another pitcher in Octavio Dotel. His stuff is still nasty but the numbers pretty pedestrian. He'll make $1.6M per year for two years. |

Minor Promotios
2/22/2009
I took a brief look at the minor leagues and decided to bump Jason Heyward to AAA, and Nick Noonan and Ehire Adrianza to Low A (Augusta). Noonan and Adrianza were both disappointing last year. |

Sheets to the Reds
2/27/2009
Sheets has signed with the Reds for 5 years $30M. That's a lot of years for someone so injury prone but he can still pitch like an All-Star. I have received the 29th pick in the draft as well as one in the supplemental round. |

CEI for Carpenter
3/2/2009
Chris Carpenter was unable to return from his most recent injury. He has battled injuries over the last couple years, and the battle is over. Truly unfortunate for Carpenter and the Cardinals. When healthy, he was one of the premier pitchers in the league. |

Spring Training is Here
3/12/2009
Finally, some baseball. Let's take a look at the team going into the season. First pitching. Rotation: Pretty clear, no competition here Tim Lincecum Matt Cain Jonathan Sanchez Rich Harden Eric Bedard Bullpen: Wilson is the closer Soriano is the #1 setup guy Howry and Affeldt will compete for the #2 setup guy Sergio Romo, Merkin Valdez, Alex Hinshaw, and Billy Sadler will compete for the final three spots in the bullpen. Valdez and Hinshaw are both out of options so if they don't make the team, they will most likely be leaving the organization. |

Spring Training (Offense)
3/12/2009
I intended to do this as one post, but I took a break from the reality that is Giants baseball to hang out with my virtual life (family). Here is my thoughts on the offense. Catcher: By far the most interesting storyline going into Spring Training. More than likely Steve Holm will be the backup. That leaves Adam Witter and Lou Marson to fight for the starting role. If I were to guess, Marson starts in AAA with Witter and Holm making the major league roster. All 3 will be getting plenty of AB's this Spring. 1B: Should stay with Ishikawa. Allen Craig and Jesus Guzman are dark horses to win the job. 2B: Dan Uggla 3B: Pablo Sandoval SS: Emmanuel Burriss LF: Matt Holliday CF: Dustin Ackley RF: Rick Ankiel Bench players (5): Kevin Frandsen and Eugenio Velez are near locks as reserves. Steve Holm is more than likely gong to be one of the two catchers. That leaves 2 more roster spots. The favorites for them are John Bowker and Brian Horwitz, though if someone wins 1B from Ishikawa, or just has a great Spring, this could change. Preliminary starting lineup vs. LHP & RHP: Burriss SS Ackley CF Sandoval 3B Holliday LF Uggla 2B Ankiel RF Ishikawa 1B Witter C All members of the 40 man are up and should get some playing time. David Maroul is the only one without a defined role in Spring Training. Let's. Play. Ball! Injuries could of course change everything in a flash. |

Anemic Offensive Opener
3/12/2009
Shut out 3-0 by the Brewers. Uggla had the only extra base hit, Marson went 1-1, Valdez and Hinshaw each pitched a scorless inning while Sadler gave up 1 ER over 2 innings. |

In Spring Training, only 1 team can score
3/13/2009
This time we scored and the other team (D-Backs) don't. Giants won this one 8-0 as Cain, Luis Lebron, Sadler, and Wilson combined for the shutout. Holliday went 3-3 with 2 doubles, Allen Craig went 1-1 with a HR, Uggla got a couple more hits including a triple, and Marson started this one going 1-2. |

4-1 Giants
3/14/2009
Chipper Jones is the first injury that will impact the regular season as he will be out for 5 weeks. Shortly after I heard Cody Ross will miss 6-7 weeks. Burriss went 2-2 with a triple and scored 3, Ishikawa went deep, and Witter went 2-3 with a double. Hinshaw gave up 1 ER over 2 IP, and Sanchez, Hinshaw, and Valdez combined for 0 ER. |

Oliver done for the year
3/15/2009
Darren Oliver will miss the season after sustaining an injury in today's game. For the Giants David Maroul will miss 2 weeks with a strained hamstring. He hit a HR before suffering the injury. Giants lost 10-8 in 13 against the Mets. Uggla went 2-2 and Marson went 0 for 4. Harden gave up 3 over 4. Affeldt, Morlan, and Soriano pitched poorly, with Soriano taking the loss. |

More injuries, not to Giants
3/16/2009
Schierholtz (Brave) will miss 5 weeks, Eric Duncan (National) will miss 4-5 months, and Carlos Gomez will miss 6 months. Giants scored 3 in the 9th to beat the Padres 7-6. Weglarz went deep, and is hitting .500. Austin Jackson went deep and is hitting .400. Bedard gave up 6 ER and couldn't get out of the second. Joaquin, Valdez, Sadler, and Wilson held the Padres scoreless for the remainder for the game. |

Giants give up 9 run 10th
3/17/2009
Tim Dillard (Brewers0 is done for this season and maybe some of the next. He is expected to take 13-14 months to heal. Weglarz went 3-3 and MArson went 2-4. Henry Sosa gave up 7 runs in 1.1 innings. Outings like that and he will be sent to minor league camp. |

Giants lose to Braves
3/18/2009
Ankiel suffered a minor injury but has asked to play through it. Weglarz gets another hit in only 1 AB. Lincecum gave up 3 over 4. |

Sadler out for 3 Months
3/19/2009
Edwin Encarnacion signed a 2-year extension with the Reds. He was hurt for much of 2009, but was MVP caliber when healthy. Chris Ianetta is out for 3 weeks, and may miss the opener. Hanley Ramirez is out for 5-6 weeks, and Sadler hurt himself throwing a pitch and will be out 3 months. The injury to Sadler should make decisions a bit easier in the bullpen and he has been placed on the 60-day DL. This clears up a roster spot on the 40 man I don't intend to use but it is nice to have. Giants did win 4-2 over the Cardinals. Viciedo has now gone 0-13 with 6-K's and was sent down to Fresno (AAA). Soriano gave up the only 2 runs. |

I Thought I Improved the Offense
3/20/2009
Giants win 2-1. The wins don't matter, and it's nice to see the strong pitching continue. I was hoping for more out of the offense after this off-season, but I need to accept that these hodge podge lineups don't tell a story. I was looking over the possible free agents at the end of the season and Affeldt is really the only contributer this season (other than Bedard who signed a one year deal). |

Another Loss
3/21/2009
Giants lose 4-2. Uggla hit his first HR as a Giant. Frandsen is 1-18 this Spring and is trying to play his way out of a job (though if he doesn't make the team than what?) Cross that bridge later. Austin Jackson is close to being reassigned to AAA, he wasn't expected to make the team anyway. Horwitz and Bowker are also trying to lose their jobs. J.J. Hardy is out for 5 weeks. |
