1910 Stanley Cup Champions: New York Rangers

The NHL playoffs in 1910 were chock full of upsets, and the team lucky enough to be standing in the end with the Stanley Cup hoisted over their heads was the New York Rangers, a team who went only 84-78. But it's not about having a great regular season, it's about winning when it counts. And the Rangers showed that they could, with a 16-7 record in the postseason. In doing so, they knocked off a tough Thrashers team in five games, beat their rival Islanders in five games, unseated the two-time defending Stanley Cup Champion Lightning in seven games, and defeated a scrappy Minnesota Wild team in the Finals.

Interesting note: In the ten Stanley Cup Finals, the Eastern Conference is 8-2.

The Islanders have won the Eastern Conference trophy for the 3rd time, the others being in 1904 and 1906. But they lost the Stanley Cup both those times. The Kings have won the Western Conference trophy for the 4th time, the others being in 1903, 1904, and 1908. The upcoming Stanley Cup Final will be a rematch of 1904, where the Kings beat the Islanders in a 4-game sweep.

The Islanders are favored this time around, unlike the previous Finals. In their previous two trips to the Finals, they have an 0-8 record.

1912 Stanley Cup Champions: Los Angeles Kings

Another season ends in bitter disappointment for the Islanders. The Kings won the Stanley Cup on a three-run home run in the 11th inning of Game 6. It was the Kings' 2nd title. The Islanders are now tied in an unfortunate category with the Winnipeg Jets: The only teams to lose three times in the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Kings, on the other hand, became the third team to win 2 Stanley Cups. The others are the Lightning and Hurricanes.

In consecutive years, teams from Southern California have captured Lord Stanley's Cup. The Anaheim Ducks won it last year.
