Burt's only 28 ![]() As of yesterday's game, he's now hitting .359/.395/.534 with 4 HR, 39 RBI, 16 SB, and 10 3B. I know he leads the league in both Average and Triples and I believe Runs Scored (with 54) as well. And 4 HR means something in 1901 - believe he's top 5. St. Louis finished the sweep of Brooklyn today, coming from behind and giving it to the Superbas 6-4 at Robison Field.
Jorge Montalvo struggled today, only lasting five innings and giving up four runs on 12 hits in the process. He left with a 4-1 deficit. However, St. Louis got to Brooklyn starter Jesus Barrera in the 7th. Duarte infield single to short Lopez HBP Keith single to left Allison BB, Duarte scored Tim Kelley (PH) grounded the ball to third, but Brooklyn 3B booted it, allowing Lopez and Keith to score Thomas sac fly to center, Allison scored Orlando Ortiz added a moon shot (hey, that's what the PBP said - over 500 feet!) and Pablo Gutierrez picked up his 6th save. At Cincinnati next! -------------------------

In Cincinnati today, the predictable happened.
St. Louis laid waste to the Reds by a score of 15-5. Pick your Player of the Game: - John Burt: 3 for 6, 4 RBI, a monster HR in the 8th - Orlando Ortiz: 3 for 5, 4 RBI - Preston Thomas: 3 for 5, 3 runs - Jorge Velasco(!): 4 for 5(!!), 4 runs (!!!) - at least it made up for his average start... Off day tomorrow, then off to the Baker Bowl in Philadelphia! ----------------

Today at the Baker Bowl, it was rainy. Rain, sunshine, clouds, nothing seems to stop the Cardinals.
Oh, Angelo Pacheco? Yeah, he's pretty good. Carried a no-no into the 6th, ended up with a two-hitter. Cards win, 5-1. -------------- Wednesday, June 19th, 1901 Washington Senators: D. Blake goes 1-5 against the Detroit Tigers, extending his hitting streak to 20 games! Cincinnati Reds: F. Bader was injured while pitching. The Diagnosis: tender shoulder. This is a day-to-day injury expected to last 1-2 weeks. |

A laughter turned into an intense game late, as a 4-0 Cardinals lead almost evaporated in the 9th inning, as Philly put the tying run on 2nd in a 4-2 Cardinals win today at the Baker Bowl.
Steve O'Herlihy cruised for 8 innings, but ran into a buzzsaw with one out and the bottom of the order up. Orlando Ortiz went 3-5 with an RBI. And I still haven't had a shutout in this dynasty ![]() ------------------- Thursday, June 20th, 1901 Boston Americans: B. Wolfe pitches a 5-hit shutout against the Chicago White Sox with 3 strikeouts and 2 BB allowed! |

Player Spotlight: #9 William Keith
#9 - Willie Keith - 2B/SS/1B
Age: 27 (birthday: 9/1/1873) From: Gautier, MS Height/Weight: 5'8/188 Bats: Left Throws: Right Salary: $2,570 Big League Service Time: 2 years, 76 days Popularity: Unknown Speed: 24/100 Steal: 16/100 1B Rating: 100 2B Rating: 71 SS Rating: 81 Acquired: Inaugural draft, Round 9, Pick 1 by St. Louis --------------- Every team needs a few scrappy utility infielders to round out the roster. Keith is just that. Versatile defensively, I've used him all around the infield to better maximize this team's talent. Unfortunately, his bat leaves something to be desired: Only a .276 OBP and barely above replacement with the bat. However, his scouting report paints a little rosier picture. Maybe he's just in an early-season slump. Also, he can't take a walk to save his life. You'd figure for a small guy that plays middle infield, he'd be fast? Nope. Speed isn't a part of his game, which is a common theme among Cardinals players (John Burt excepted) 1901 Stats: .252/.276/.335, 230 AB, 22 R, 58 H, 12 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 32 RBI, 6 BB, 18 K |

"And I still haven't had a shutout in this dynasty"
I said that after the last game. Can I say this time that I haven't scored 20 runs in a game yet? Because today at the Baker Bowl, after I bitched about not having a shutout yet, Jorge Montalvo fired a 3-hit shutout to beat Philadelphia 4-0, which made it eight in a row for the Cardinals. He was dominant the whole way through, and got a clutch double play ball with the bases loaded in the 4th. Montalvo also excelled at the plate, going 2 for 4 with an RBI double. A little concerning is the struggles of John Burt. He's just not up to his dominant self lately as his average has dropped to a HORRIBLE (insert sarcasm) .345. On to New York! ---------------------
The Pittsburgh Pirates traded 28-year old shortstop C. Godwin to the New York Giants, getting 31-year old catcher P. Thomas and 22-year old minor league starting pitcher S. Watson in return. |

June 22nd/23rd, 1901
The Cardinals' streak ends at eight with a 4-3 loss in 10 innings to the Giants at the Polo Grounds. Mike Hudson hit a RBI double off Jorge Velasco.
Quinn Allison put the Cardinals up with a two-run triple in the 7th - only the 2nd hit of the game for St. Louis. But Mike Hayes tied the game off Velasco in the 8th with an RBI double. Velasco retired the side without further issues and the game went to the 9th tied at 3. The game stayed the same until Hudson's double. Off day tomorrow, but it's two more against the Giants next week. ---------------- Saturday, June 22nd, 1901 Baltimore Orioles: A. Gonzáles goes 5-5 against the Detroit Tigers, with 1 HR, 2 RBI and 2 R. Cleveland Blues: M. Warner was injured in a collision at a base. The Diagnosis: herniated disc (back). He's expected to miss about 3 weeks. |

Angelo Pacheco finished off his 15th win of the season (and it's only June 24th!) with another scintillating performance today at the Polo Grounds. His Cardinals won by a score of 7-2.
Pacheco only allowed 6 hits and struck out seven, most of which came via the big sweeping curveball, which may be the most devastating pitch in the league. It was a balanced attack as well, with six Cardinals batters driving in a run and seven with at least one hit. Preston Thomas was a homer short of the cycle. ----------------- Monday, June 24th, 1901 Milwaukee Brewers: T. Warren was injured on a defensive play. The Diagnosis: shoulder tendinitis. He's expected to miss about 2 weeks. |

Can't win them all.
St. Louis drops one to New York today 4-2. Steve O'Herlihy struggled early, New York got a couple of early runs off of him, and the Cardinals couldn't recover. On to Boston next to play the Beaneaters. ----------------------- Tuesday, June 25th, 1901 Baltimore Orioles: J. Shannon was injured on a defensive play. The Diagnosis: shoulder strain. He's expected to miss about 8 weeks. |

The Cards and Beaneaters went long today. Really long.
An RBI single off the bat of Watkins sent the few Boston fans remaining home happy with a 7-6 win in 16 innings. The only reason it went that far was a Orlando Ortiz triple in the 9th that tied the game at 6. No other scoring until the 16th, and of course I had Pacheco out there once Gutierrez tired. Pacheco picked up his 2nd loss ![]() ------------------

A close one today in Boston, but the Cardinals prevailed 6-4. Everyone except for Steve Downing had at least one hit.
Boston came close in the 9th, down 6-2. They loaded the bases against Velasco with no one out, and I had seen enough. Pablo Gutierrez allowed two of the runs to score, but the second one scored on a 5-4-3 double play that essentially killed the Boston threat.

He finally got one. Dominant all season, Angelo Pacheco finally got a shutout. I'll just let the OOTP news report take it over....
------------ Ángelo Pacheco of the St. Louis Cardinals spun his magic on the Boston Beaneaters today. He blanked them 5-0 on 6 hits, registering 9 strikeouts and 1 walk. "The bottom line was I just kept the ball down," Pacheco said. "My breaking stuff was down. Everything was down." Talking to reporters in the postgame interview, the St. Louis skipper said, "We got solid pitching, good defense and we took great team at-bats in a lot of different situations. This was just a solid performance by everyone." To this point in the season, Pacheco shows a 16-2 record, 17 starts, 148.2 innings, 114 strikeouts and a 1.57 ERA. ------------------ Friday, June 28th, 1901 St. Louis Cardinals: Á. Pacheco pitches a 6-hit shutout against the Boston Beaneaters with 9 strikeouts and 1 BB allowed! |

(yeah, today's really the 29th - error on the last post heading)
The Cardinals finish June with a 6-2 win over Brooklyn. The top of the order did all the damage, going 10 for 15 with 5 runs and 6 RBI's. Steve O'Herlihy went the distance for the win. He improves to 11-7. Off day tomorrow, so June is over. |
