Carl Yastrzemski belted 2 home runs and drove in 5 runs to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 7-3 come from behind win over the Minnesota Twins. Yaz hit a 2-run HR in the 1st to give Boston the lead then an RBI double by Rod Carew and RBI singles by Rusty Staub and Hal McRae gave Minnesota a 3-2 lead in the last of the 3rd. Butch Hobson hit a 2-run HR to give the Red Sox the lead in the top of the 8th before Yaz's 3-run HR later in the inning put the game away.

Rod Carew went 4-5 and drove in a pair of runs but it wasn't enough as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Minnesota Twins, 7-5, to sweep the 2-game series. Carlton Fisk led the way for Boston, going 3-5 with a 2-run HR. Jim Rice, Carl Yastrzemski, Fred Lynn and Butch Hobson each drove in runs for the Red Sox. Butch Wynegar drove in a pair of runs and Dave Edwards had an RBI for the Twins.

John Lowenstein drove in a pair of runs with Bill Sample and Nelson Norman each driving in a run for Texas. Jim Rice, Carlton Fisk and George Scott each drove in a run for Boston. Unfortunately, Dwight Evans left the game in the bottom of the 4th with a fractured wrist and was placed on the 15-day DL after the game.

Doc Medich (3-1) outdueled Bill Lee (6-9) as he went 8 innings allowing 1 run on 6 hits to hurl the Texas Rangers to a 2-1 win over the Boston Red Sox to sweep the 2-game series. Richie Zisk and Jim Sundberg drove in the runs for the Rangers and Jim Rice drove in the lone Red Sox run. Before the game, Boston called up cf Sam Bowen from AAA to fill in for "Dewey". The Red Sox also signed free agent left handed pitcher Ken Holtzman and demoted pitcher Allen Ripley to AAA.

Jim Rice also belted a pair of home runs and drove in 2 runs. Fred Lynn drove in 3 runs and both Rick Burleson and Carlton Fisk each drove in runs for the Red Sox. George Brett had a 2-run home run plus George Zeber, Darrell Porter and Amos Otis each had solo home runs for the Royals as 8 home runs were hit in the game.

7/27 - Philadelphia and New York have agreed in principle to a trade. The Phillies will send 35-year old first baseman Davey Johnson to the Mets for 35-year old starting pitcher Jerry Koosman.
7/29 - Trade winds have been blowing through San Diego. This time, a deal has materialized between the Padres and Blue Jays. According to sources inside the organization, San Diego will ship 25-year old catcher Charlie Moore to Toronto for 31-year old reliever Tom Buskey and 23-year old third baseman Garth Iorg.

Soup surrendered an RBI double to Danny Goodwin and a 3-run home run to Dave May and took the loss. Ed Farmer came in and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 33rd save of the season.

Nolan, Larry Hisle and Lenn Sakata each drove in a run for Milwaukee to build a 3-1 lead after 4 innings before a solo homer by Butch Hobson in the 7th and a solo blast by Dwight Evans in the bottom of the 9th in his first game back from an injury tied the game. Jerry Remy drove in the other Boston run.

The season is ending on a bad note for Mike Krukow, starting pitcher for the Chicago Cubs. It was announced that he suffered a torn back muscle while throwing a pitch and will be out for at least 8 months.
