the fact that Tulowitzki made that as close as it was...either says a lot about his arm or Youkilis' speed.

Someone at FOX is a big Widespread Panic fan. That was "Ain't Life Grand" going to the break. They played "Surprise Valley" when the Rocks fell behind 3-0 too.

Gutsy play by Morales at second but it's 6-1 Sox.

Why have the playoffs sucked so much this year? There have been only a handful of close games. The Indians/Sox series was cool that it went 7, but there was maybe 1 close game.

Well... let's chalk it up to the layoff and see what tomorrow brings. I'd have never sent Beckett out there for the 7th but I guess they want him to get his pitches in and keep the Rocks from getting looks at the bullpen arms.

If there was just the two LCS and then the World Series it would not suck so much.

The Rockies had some close games with both the Phillies and the Diamondbacks, but they came out on top in all of them so it seems less exciting at first glance.

I may just be spoiled because of the amazing game that ended the season.

Yeah, I agree, it's all been downhill since then.

From the "Most Obvious Thing Ever" department:

In the postgame, Dusty Baker was saying how he totally agreed with Francona throwing Beckett out there for 7 full innings because he only threw 80 pitches in his last start so they probably wanted him to get up around 100 to be ready for his next start.

Awesome.

I chuckled and figured I wouldn't be the only OOTP'er who got some joy out of that.

Anyone get the idea that Peter Gammons might not be a big Dusty fan?

After watching the game 1, I think the Red Sox should simply rest Ortiz in Colorado. It will obviously be an easier choice if the Sox will take game 2 and be up 2-0. Francona will still be able to use Ortiz as a pinch hitter in a crutial spot for either pitchers, or Lugo. (and then Cora will be the SS after that)

I think the 8 days off for the Rockies are hurting them, specially the pitchers. We will see if the Rockies will be able to bounce back and get back to the 21/22 form pretty soon.

My biggest concern right now is the game 3, Dice-K pitching in thin air, without Papi in the lineup.

Did anyone else find it strange that Colorado doesn't play the shift and Ortiz gets a couple of opposite field hits? I guess they felt more comfortable pitching him away I just wish he could do that more often when the whole left side is open.

Not that I'm on the "throw the guy out there until his arm falls off" team, but I did agree with Beckett going 7 innings. Francona knew Game 1 was in the bag, so there was no reason for him to believe he'd need Beckett in Game 4 in desperation. Save the bullpen arms so that everyone is available if they need them in Game 2.

I didn't notice that, but yeah, that is strange.

Agreed, at least on the first part. I think arm chair managing is a very difficult thing to do, fwiw. Tito got two bullpen arms some tune up work in game situation. There may be a time when both of those pitchers will be needed to get out of a real jam. If tomorrow is a laugher in the wrong direction for Tito, Snyder can be used then to keep miles off Schil's arm.

Meanwhile, Timlin last pitched in G3 of the ALCS - more than a week ago, and Gag-me needs apps to get ready for real use. Pap and Oki don't need any work after G7, and Decarlmen warmed up, but hadn't been used since G4 of the ALCS, a week ago, so that makes sense. Lopez was used in ALCS G6, so he could use some work but it isn't necessary.

On the other hand, Beckett hadn't had a real difficult inning yet (he never threw more than 16 pitches in an inning), and his first AB longer than 6 pitches since the 1st inning (the Kaz saw 7 pitches his first AB) was his last batter, and then he still only needed 7 pitches. Finally, Beckett's last inning had him face the 7-8-9 hitters.

I can't second guess Tito's use of his pen at all last night.

Additionally, he has been fantastic for a long time.

Also you don't want the Colorado hitters getting a look at DelCarmen, Oki or Pap if you dont have to, wait til you really need them and then let the Rockies get introduced.

It was 13-1. I'm pretty sure Boston wouldn't have to use their main setup guys and closer to finish out the game.
