Well, Mexico has already been peripherally involved by selling Sonora and Chihuahua provinces to the CSA (giving the Confederacy a Pacific coast), and they will figure in the baseball aspect as well.

Canada will get in as well, but I don't want to spoil anything...

Ambassador Roosevelt heads for Berlin

from the Columbia Patriot, February 22, 1903:

Newly appointed Ambassador to Germany Theodore Roosevelt, en route to Berlin, was quoted on his mission: "The policy of President McKinley is to pursue a close relationship with the Kaiser's government. Germany has ascended to the primary role in continental politics and it would only be wise for the United States to be on a good footing with them."

When a reporter pointed out that this would likely alienate the French, who are the historic enemies of Germany, Roosevelt added, "Well, let's just say that the Frogs are not in dutch, pardon the pun, with our government. Has anyone forgotten their tacit support of the Confederates, both in the War of the Rebellion and during the recent conflict?" As for the British, "They're too busy trying to get a foot in South America..."

so basically going for the main power in the continent hmm? Intresting. Wonder if the border will be as transparent and good for business a it was up to a few years ago, or if the anti-British sentiment will spill over?

1903 U.S. Baseball Preview

from the Sporting Way, March 29, 1903:

As teams began to leave training camps in Arizona and California for the start of the 1903 baseball season, the single-most asked question was "So, who's going to win it this year?"

The Giants and Lumberjacks return their pennant-winning starting lineups intact, so the smart money would likely be on those two. But a shrewd prognosticator would look at a few other factors. For example, the San Diego squad, runners-up last year, also return an intact team, plus their new ace - "Tornado" Jake Weimer, a 29-year old from the agricultural league in Ottumwa, Iowa. Star-in-the-making Joe Tinker holds down the shortstop position, and Fred Tenney is a bona fide offensive star. The Conquistadors are fully capable of upsetting Connie Mack's Portland squad.

In the Federal League, the Giants cruised to a relatively easy title. But a pair of 1902 also-rans from Pennsylvania picked up two of the top chuckers to come out of the amateur ranks. Philadelphia, last season's doormat (and embarassment to Ben Shibe), found a gem in home-state prospect "Chief" Bender. The 18-year-old may not be ready, but when he is the City of Brotherly Love's squad will be doormats no more. The other Pennsylvania team, Pittsburgh, inked Mordecai "Three-Finger" Brown. Brown lost a pair of digits to a farm accident, but his thus reduced claw can employ miraculous spin on the horsehide, making him a challenge for any swinger of the lumber. Still, the pick's the Giants - Buck Freeman and co. are the class of the East. Columbia, with up-and-comers Frank Chance, Pete Hill and Sam Crawford, might surprise, but the smart money is on the Giants.

Venezuelan Settlement

from the Confederate Foreign Review, April 19, 1903:

The late crisis in the Caribbean, where the German, British and Italian navies squared off with that of the Confederacy over the former's presence in Venezuelan waters, has been solved without bloodshed.

The new Secretary of State, Thomas F. Bayard, acting under the direction of President Pritchard, coordinated a peaceful settlement between the government of Venezuelan President Cipriano Castro and the European powers. Part of the settlement is the assumption of a portion of the debt by the Confederate government in exchange for a 99-year lease on two naval bases.

The first base is to be built in the Gulf of Paria, which is strategically placed to counterbalance European bases in Trinidad and Tobego and grants access to the Atlantic Ocean. The second would be built at Porto Cabello on the Caribbean coast. These basing rights expand the possible range of the Confederate Navy into the South Atlantic as well as the entire Caribbean basin, and will be used to help protect the construction of the Panamian canal.

Title Combatants Make Swap

from the Sporting Way, June 3, 1903:

Last fall's championship opponents, the Giants and Lumberjacks, pulled off a swap on May 28 as Portland acquired "Big" Ed Delahanty from the Giants, sending back little-used second baseman Charlie Grant, an integration player with a lot of potential, and bit-player Joe Hughes.

For Portland, the deal makes great sense as Delahanty is a talented outfielder who will fit nicely into the 'Jacks lineup behind Honus Wagner. For New York, Delahanty was considered expendable, and the addition of Grant gives the Giants a second baseman of the future - and that future may be a season or two away.

Memorandum, CS President Pritchard to General R.E. Stuart, July 11, 1903:

General,

You are hereby authorized to implement Operation Snowfall. I expect your operatives to be in place by August 15th and the actual operation to have been successfully concluded no later than the 1st of September.

Should you or any of your operatives be captured, you are to disavow all knowledge of this and any other Confederate operations. You are also reminded that capture will result in no support from any official Confederate agency.

- Pritchard

GIANTS, LED BY "HOMERUN" JOHNSON STILL ATOP FEDERAL STANDINGS - Grant "Home Run" Johnson who connected for three circuit clouts in last fall's championship series, has hit 16 long blasts this season, easily the best in all of baseball, and his bat has led the New York Giants to a 57-37 record, best in the Federal League. Meanwhile, the Pacific race is being led by the San Diego Conquistadors, who are balanced in all facets, with Joe Tinker and Ginger Beaumont leading the defense and offense respectively, and a strong pitching staff led by a pair of Bills: "Big" Bill Dineen and "Wild" Bill Donovan.
