Marc: if you think this is the first time you have read that I have dislike e-license, then I would most kindly suggest that there may be a disconnect between you reading "Twelvefield" followed by the text any of my messages. (For a certain number of folks, I suspect the disconnect is permanent, but what the hey). If you were to search my handle, you would find a few references to how I dislike e-license (please see below).
Once again, like some kind of demented Greek chorus stuck on the same line and verse: It's not that e-license is so bad, it's just that I would prefer a game that came in a box with a disc and a printed manual, all of which I could buy at my local store. Pray, this must sound familiar by now, no? I have had to deal with e-license, and they were efficient in dealing with my issue, but it did take more than a few hours to deal with. http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...22#post1539022 http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...97#post1526197 http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...58#post1433258 http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...76#post1333076 http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...78#post1318178 http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...44#post1316644 http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...615#post845615 http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...317#post253317 Anyway, these are links to all of the posts I could find of myself directly complaining about e-license and/or the lack of a "disc+manual+box on store shelf=a videogame" equation. A few of them you have even replied to directly, Marc, so there's little need to re-open any of this, at least from my point of view. As for OOTPB being a text-based baseball simulator, yes, I realize that's just what it is. It doesn't stop me from fantasizing about MVP graphics with an OOTPB engine, though. I wouldn't believe you if you said you didn't think that would be a sweet! baseball game. Again, some of those posts above are links in larger threads which discuss this very issue, so again again, there's not much point in repeating this stuff here and now. On the lighter side, it was kind of fun to see the whole of my thread-count in one big swooping story arc. There's the stuff on Harry "Snapper" Areola and Solomon Dingler, my angry rant about the PbP, the foray into generating a250,000-seat baseball colosseum, and a joke about a Catholic dog and a Protestant dog who both walk into a bar together. Ah, memories... |

I can't work any retail magic for this release, but it's a dream I have that's for sure. The game will ship digitally, on PC and Mac with a manual.
I think the whole Digital Vs Retail discussions can be had again. I think Digital distribution is the way forward, but it;s important that we overcome some of issues that you've faced as I am sure 'you are not alone' |

My experience of e-License is very positive. I was unhappy with the concept when it was first broached and expected bad things to follow its inception, but have yet to see any.

Just from what I have seen on these boards, there seems to be quite a few of people who play the current OOTP games and got started with Season Ticket Baseball. STB was pretty much just a clone of OOTP 4 and did not include a MLB or MLBPA license of any kind. I do not have any idea how much money it costs to have Atari (Infograms) or any other company to box and sell the game retail, but I often think that it had to be worth the money considering how many people got started with STB and later purchased OOTP5 and OOTP6.
In my uninformed (since I do not run the books) opinion, it seems like it would be worth it to send the game to retails stores again even without a license. ------- On another topic, is the deal between OOTP and SI only for one release of OOTP? I remember reading that in the original announcement thread. Quote:

I was under the impression the company (I can't remember who) that published ST droped the game, oopt did not take it away from them. So I assumed the publisher didn't feel they were making enough on the game to continue. If that's wrong someone please correct me. Even so I would love to see the game out in stores. I would hope there would be a way to mention being able to import histoical seasons on the box the a buyer would be made aware while looking at the box. It's not a MLB license but might make the difference in getting someone to try the game. Not sure if this could be done without any legal problems though. I did see the oopt ad in the magazine and was disappointed that it didin't mention Lehman or historical play. |

There's other options rather than Digital Distribution that can carry game publication forward. I think it narrows one's viewpoint some to assume that the only best way to publish your game is through download.
Valve, and STEAM, are probably at the forefront of gaming regarding purely digital download distribution. EA is making the switch from discs to digital download, and also has a massive download server set-up. Those are two examples of what very large game companies do. I would hesitate to put SI in that league. I think a more valid comparison would be to a lot of the companies who put out payware add-ons for Flight Simulator. Most of those companies are smaller than SI, and have an even tighter niche market than OOTPB. Abacus deals mostly with digital downloads, and if memory serves, they use a company called Flight1 that does more or less the same thing that E-license does. One innovation that Flight1 and some other licencing companies have that E-license does not, is that they are keeping track of valid game keys on their own server in such a way that if the end user corrupts or loses his or her game, the process of re-applying for the lost key is fully automatic. Then you have a company like Aerostudios (formerly Areosoft), and On Course Software, who until recently, had only disks available for purchase. Aerostudios makes an air traffic control sim with graphics that makes OOTPB look like Field of Dreams. On Course makes a virtual co-pilot for your MSFS airplanes. I had to order those disks from England (I live in Vancouver), so that was a bit expensive, although they only took 3 days to get here. Aerostudios now charges you $10 to access the download server to get patches for the game. They guy who runs Aerostudios ran out of budget for his download server, so to defray those costs, you have to pay for patches. Although he is a very nice, very helpful guy, I am not fond of this system, and I think it's a good example of what can happen if digital distribution is not treated exactly properly. My best, greatest example of how I think the independant gaming industry should move forward is from the publisher Stardock. They recently published Galactic Civilizations 2, which is a tremendous game from the point of view of a publisher about the size of SI. First, you can buy the game on store shelves or you can download it, buyers' choice. The copy protection is built into the game and relies on a key code that recognizes your computer system. Once you activate the code, Stardock remembers your key. After that, you don't need to keep the disc in the drive to play the game ever again! (Starforce victims, rejoice!) That, and if the game ever gets corrupted or destroyed, including if you lose or break the actual game disc, you can automatically download it again as many times as you want. The game key allows you license to keep two copies of the software, much like E-license. It's easy to make your own copies of GC2, as the copy protection does not prevent copying the original game at all. What it does do is control your access to the download server Stardock Central. The only way you can patch your game is with a registered copy of GC2. And, like OOTPB patches, there's a good mix of bug fixes, enhancements as suggested by their forum users, and extra content in each patch. In my opinion, Stardock has the right idea. They listen to their customers and find ways to get the things they want into their games. It's never "my way or the highway" for Galactic Civilizations. They understand how game hackers and pirates do business, and they create counter-measures that don't alienate the registered users (**cough cough ** STEAM ** cough cough ** EA ** cough cough). They have balanced out how to put content into game boxes and on to store shelves, yet also use digital downloads to their advantage. http://www.atcsimulator.com/ http://www.stardock.com/ http://www.oncourse-software.co.uk/ http://www.steampowered.com/ http://www.ea.com/language.jsp http://www.flight1.com/ http://www.abacuspub.com/ In no particular order, I provide links to the game publishers I have mentioned in this post. |

It might have been said before that NHL Eastside Hockey Manager doesn't use E-License anymore and it's even sold at stores or maybe it's sold at EBGAMES/Best Buy and Walmart!
I like games like NBALIVE,MVP BASEBALL because they have Live Play by Play meaning you can see the Slam Dunk being made, seening the Slam Dunk Contest live or the Homerun happening! I like version 7 because it's going to allow us to sim 365 days a year and not skip any dates,Real Spring Training, some kind of Expansion,Black Monday,Relocationing,Amateur Draft will last 2 days,Team Control because I get to just do the Amateur and Rule 5 drafts for my team,Full Minor League teams,Wavier Trades really happening,Futures games,Real Homerun Derby,Celebrity Game, can have Interleague play all year around and so on! I hope the College/Fantasy/Expansion Drafts are ESPN STYLE! For the Amateur Draft we need somebody like Mel Kiper or Jay Bliss to say who are the top Players and Pitchers left on the board, somebody like Peter Grammons to report what trades are going to happen,a Ticker so we know what has been Drafted by which team meaning that the number, notes about things about teams and trades,Manager/GM/Owner suggetsion who you should pick and so on! For Fantasy Draft you start off with drafting Front Office People and Staff and then the Players and Pitchers but the difference here is every team in your Universe will be drafting so Barry Bonds could be drafted by the Mexican City Baseball Team or the Omaha Royals or the Y.Giants of the Japanese League if they are in your Universe! They need to add Lahemans Datebase to the game but in their own version with not just teams but leagues so then they can add the MLB/Minor Leagues for 06! |

Agreed with the chorus that e-license has always been extremely fast and helpful with recovering lost licenses.

I believe if you get a MLBPA license, the union would not letyou put monetary value on the players. Thats why players have "point systems" for budgets, salary and so on. Like I would want Arod to cost me 400 points instead of seeing the real value he is, or overvalue.

2k5 Baseball did have points but points seemed to equal a dollar. I signed players for 10 Million Points so I think that the days of 30 point contracts and what not are over, maybe with the last CBA. The dollar sign is still missing tho. But baseball has always been stupid when trying to promote itself, both with making it so difficult to comply with their licenses, and them suing fantasy leagues because they claim to own the rights to baseball stats.

I don't think the problem involving the lack of a in-store release has anything to do with eLicense. If I'm correct, Season Ticket Baseball (the in-store version of OOTP, released by Infograms) didn't use a system like eLicense. It seems like SIGames doesn't want to spend the money to put the game on the shelves for the first version of OOTP under the SI banner, which looks to be ok.

I doubt there is a market for the game for a printing of it on CD and then boxing and shipping it. The game would probably loose money, or at least the increased sales from increased availablilty would be outweighed by the current plan. The opprotunity costs are just to great.
