In the first match, I thought it was perhaps a lucky punch that felled Heenan. But Dwyer took Heenan's best shots the other night and stayed upright. After two fights, and two wins, he looks to probably be the better fighter. With the upsets in October, then a couple of really exciting fights on November's card (Dalton-Courtney was a classic), and now capped off by this fight, my uni has been an blast. Thanks for reading. |

Slavin vs. Elliott headlines December action in UoLBA
BONNER SPRINGS, KS - December brings another exciting month of boxing action to the UoLBA, featuring 6th ranked Frank Slavin putting it on the line against 26th ranked Jimmy Elliott. Elliott, with his punching power and wreckless style, is one of the most feared fighters in the division. Slavin, after suffering his recent loss to Chet Shandel, seeks to repair his reputation with a solid victory against a tough foe.
For Elliott, it is the first decent fight he has had since his DQ in May cost him a berth in the June tournament for the UoLBA title. Since then, top fighters have managed to avoid the volatile Elliott, keeping him in the middle rankings. A win against Slavin would likely catapult him into the top 10 and put him more in control of his future matchups. For Slavin, this fight will either be his shot at redemption, or a further blow to his credibility as a title contender. Most fans assumed Slavin would take an easy fight to rebuild shattered confidence and tune up for another run at the top fighters in the division. Instead, Slavin draws a foe who many feel might be the most dangerous fighter in the division. A win would clearly put him in line for a title shot, but at the risk of losing a foothold in the top 10 if he does not come away the winner. The outcome of the fight is anyone's guess, but the match-up is clearly a boon for fans, who will witness an exciting contest matching two top heavyweights in the UoLBA. The remaining fights for December will be announced shortly. |

Slavin vs. Elliott - a brawl to remember
VANCOUVER - Exhibition Gardens was rocking tonight, with great fight action from beginning to end. The feature bout was a memorable one, featuring top HW Frank Slavin defending his honor against tough Irishman Jimmy Elliott.
The fight began with a fired up Slavin opening a two round lead over the slow starting Elliott, using superior speed and finesse. Elliott didn't seem his old self, other than a typical reliance on some dirty tactics to keep the referree busy. It wasn't until round 3 that Elliott woke up, pummelling Slavin from the opening bell until the end of the round. In round 4, a vicious hook from Elliott opened a cut over the right eye of Slavin. This cut would give Slavin some trouble throughout the rest of the bout. From this point on, the fight see-sawed, with Slavin besting Elliott one round, Elliott chasing Slavin the next. In round 9, Elliott had Slavin in big trouble, sending him reeling with a vicious uppercut early in the frame. Slavin somehow held on to last the round. By the end of round 10, most observers had the round even. Round 11 had Elliott on the advance again, and a barrage of punches mid-round opened the wound over Slavin's right eye one more time. The referree stopped the fight for a review of the wound by the ring physician. Fortunately for Slavin and fight fans in attendance, the fight was allowed to continue. In round 12, Slavin chose to cover up while Elliott chose to go all out for the KO. Slavin's strategy turned out to trump his opponent, as a great defense and a few well timed shots won Slavin the round. At the end of the contest, ringside expert Mark Somogyi (Gunsmoke, I believe) declared the bout a 114-114 draw, and I concurred. Then it went to the judges scorecards. The first judge found for Elliott, 115-113. The second judge declared the bout 117-113 for Slavin, the third scored it 115-113 for Frank Slavin. Jimmy Elliott's corner went wild with consternation over the ruling, declaring their fighter the clear winner. He had obviously landed the heavier shots throughout the contest. Ringside experts determined the judges were likely influenced by the number of warnings Elliott received throughout the fight, a frequent failing of the Irishman. With the win, Slavin moves back into the top 5 and polishes up his resume for another run at the title. Elliott is left to lick his wounds and hope for another opportunity in the near future. On the undercard, slugging Joe Choynski vanquished Joe Goddard with a light's out uppercut in the 9th round of an entertaining and close match. Roy Clark and Harry Woodson were also winners. Here are the complete results from Exhibition Gardens: December 14, 1890 HW: Frank Slavin 23-4-0 (16) SD12 Jimmy Elliot 23-1-0 (11) HW: Joe Choynski 21-2-1 (11) KO9 Joe Goddard 23-2-0 (11) HW: Harry Woodson 20-2-2 (12) SD10 C. C. Smith 21-3-0 (13) HW: Roy Clark 22-3-0 (12) UD8 Joe Lannon 11-8-5 (1) |

November 1890 Results from Forbes Field
PITTSBURGH - The final night of action of the year in the UoLBA was a doozy In tonight's Main Event, Bill Bradburn wins an impressive 4 round TKO victory over an overmatched Bob McIntyre. Bradburn punished McIntyre mercilessly until referee Rudy Battle stopped the bout midway through round 4, throwing his arms around an exhausted McIntyre and sparing him further punishment. Amazingly, all judges had McIntyre ahead when the bout ended, one even had McIntyre ahead in round 4 despite the fact that Bradburn had him outpointed in the round 30-2 when Battle stopped the bloodbath. Incredible.
The undercard saved the night for fight fans, as an entertaining 10 round contest ended with an MD victory for Peter Maher over John Morrissey. Maher won a tight victory over a very tough opponent, with the final scorecards reading 95-94, 94-94 and 95-94 for Maher. The Irishman had Morrissey behind from the opening bell, finally dropping him to the canvas in round 8. But Morrissey climbed to his feet and returned the favor in round 9. Maher just barely got to his feet at the count of 9, to finish the round. Morrissey had Maher again in trouble in round 10, but Maher somehow kept his feet to preserve the victory. Here are the results from Forbes Field: December 31, 1890 HW: Bill Bradburn 24-1-0 (10) TKO4 Bob McIntyre 21-2-1 (4) HW: Peter Maher 22-2-0 (17) MD10 John Morrissey 21-2-2 (18) HW: Joe Goss 24-1-1 (22) KO5 JH Brown 16-3-3 (3) HW: Tom Allen 24-1-0 (14) SD8 Mike Kine 14-5-5 (2) HW: Jack Stewart 8-13-4 (1) UD6 Bill Partridge 2-16-6 (0) HW: Charles Buskins 5-17-1 (0) UD6 Art Schultz 9-12-2 (2) A year end recap will follow later, along with the announcement of new fighters for 1891.
