I suppose so. I've never checked. My birth makes me Scottish, I am Canadian. I suppose I could return to the UK at any time. Many countries grant de facto citizenship to foreign born children of citizens. I believe that Canada and the US have reciprocal laws granting dual citizenship to children who qualify.
From what I"ve found you are correct. Being a part of a commonwealth country to make this process much easier than if you had say, moved to Mexico or something.

Also if a Canadian and American got hitched, their kids (ot my understanding) would be dual citizens. Quite handy for certain careers actually.

Brett Hull was in this situation (duel citizenship)... he wanted to play for Team Canada but ended up on Team USA because Dave King (Canada's coach) basiclly said he sucked. Brett Hull gets my respect for actually making a decision (he could have played for Canada in later tournys but choose to stay with the USA), A-Rod does not.

I don't understand how his making (or not making) this decision is an issue with whether he is respected or not.

That's where the problem started. When he said he wanted to play for the Dominican, a whole bunch of people got pissed off that he wasn't representing the US. When he said he might go either way, a whole bunch of people got pissed off that he wasn't going to respect his heritage. Finally, he called the whole thing off.

Maybe he just flat out doesn't feel like playing. It's the offseason, his personal time, and he wants to do what he wants. He can't say he doesn't feel like playing because that answer would attract all kinds of media attacks. I think his answer of refusing to choose between the countries was a clever way of getting out of it...AND he doesn't risk the chance of injury on his $25M contract.

Edit...just read it is taking place in March.

Well yeah, if he said that not many people would care... it's the fact that he won't play because he doesn't want to pick sides that has people annoyed.

Which makes absolutely no sense. If he would have picked the U.S., there would be people who are pissed off. If he would have picked the D.R., there would be people who are pissed off. Hell, if A-Rod managed to clone himself and play for both nations, people would be pissed off. No matter what he did, he was going to get crap for it, so I completely understand his decision to just not be a part of it.

IIRC, there aren't going to be any Yankees playing in this event. Doesn't look like ARod had much of a choice.

From what I understand, Georgie is making a big push for none of his players to take part in this. Between the negative publicity his 'choice' was generating and the pressure I'm sure that Georgie was putting on him, I'm not surprised that this was the final outcome.

I actually can't believe this is actually still being talked about. I thought this thread was a stretch from the start. For it to have lasted 5 pages and a couple of weeks is pitiful.

If you change to 40 posts per page, it's only 3 pages. But yeah, I couldn't believe it came back either.

Rodriguez withdrew from the event last month because he couldn't decide whether to play for the U.S. or the Dominican Republic and didn't want to insult the one he didn't choose.

He was born in the USA. One or both of his parents are from DR.

You're defending him!?! What a *****!

I don't care about A-Rod's decision one way or the other. I was just trying to overreact, too.

Oh, and I was joking with the first part of this post, too. As far as I know, you are not a *****.

Looks like MLB and the Players Association have been pressuring A-Rod to play ...
