MY LIFE IN 1959
EC's Wishin' Life Is Fine In '59 Movies, Music, Sports -- that's the story of my life. Wow! The movies are pretty darn devine in '59... yep, think so. One good thing about being in the Air Force... Hollywood gives the military access to their movie releases before the public... we watched a lot movies in the Air Force... yep, a lot of them. 1959 was the year of one of my all-time favorite westerns "Rio Bravo" with John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson and Walter Brennan. Also the year for "Anatomy of a Murder" with Jimmy Stewart playing a hayseed and small-town lawyer opposed in the courtroom by the dandy prosecutor George C. Scott, in his first role. EC really liked "Some Like It Hot", a comedy with Tony Curtis, Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon... the entertaining romantic comedy "Pillow Talk" with adorable Doris Day and Rock Hudson... cute naval comedy "Operation Petticoat" with Cary Grant and Tony Curtis aboard a submarine with 5 beatiful girls... and another fine western "Warlock", starring Henry Fonda, Anthony Quinn and Richard Widmark. There's a song in "Rio Bravo"... they are all cooped up in the jailhouse guarding a prisoner... to past the time, they start singing a song... Dean Martin sings... of course Ricky Nelson sings... and Walter Brennan sings... nope, pilgrim, Big John Wayne didn't join in... nope, Big John didn't even hum, play a tambourine, tap his toes, snap his fingers or clap his hands. For all you buckaroos and little darlin's, too... here's some good pickin' and grinnin'... and singin'... here's everybody -- but Big John -- singing "My Rifle, My Pony and Me" and "Cindy, Cindy". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uuAjwvtxEM EC would also like to add that Walter Brennan and the Johnny Mann Singers had a big hit in 1962 with the story of "Old Rivers"... it was #5 on the pop charts and #3 on the country charts... it's a narration song and just might bring a tear or two to your eyes... it did it to EC... when I was 5 in 1955, EC lived on a farm... there was an old black farmer, a sharecropper, who befriended me and would let me plow with him... he would let me stand between him and the plow, hold the reins and the plow and "pretend" to plow... yep, that is one of the highlights of EC's life... that why "Old Rivers" touched me so and made my eyes water when I first heard it on the radio in 1962... it still bring a tear or two to my eyes when I hear it on my custom-made CDs. Watch this video... it is a great video and wonderful song, too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwuHxJrrf0Y Yep, EC misted up again... also misted up seeing my pals, Big John, Deano, Ricky and Grandpa McCoy again.... really miss them. Yep, EC watched the videos again... not one time, but twice. Last edited by Eugene Church; 11-10-2022 at 12:59 PM. |

Monday, May 4, 1959 CHERRYWOOD POUNDS PELHAM IN 1ST PLACE SHOWDOWN... STOUTS TAKE OVER TOP SPOT IN SECONDARY LEAGUE It was an eventful weekend in the South Island Secondary League... two of the three co-leaders met their demise, leaving the Cherrywood Stouts on top of the standings... the Stouts steamrolled the Pelham Oaks 13-3 and the Parkland Perfectos were drummed by the Grin Hill Smileys 8-2... Cherrywood is 4-1 and all alone in first place... Pelham and Parkland dipped to second place with 3-2 records. In other games Sunday Braxton walloped Joliet 14-8 and Billings trimmed the Littleville Supermen 6-4. Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-25-2022 at 10:49 PM. |

MY LIFE IN 1959
Will EC's Life Be Devine in '59? Nope, not likely... EC's in the Air Force... trying to learn the Russkie language at the Army Language School in Monterey,California... just drifting through life the way I always have... never really goal-oriented... just drifting and dreaming I guess you might say... yep, just drifting and dreaming. EC life was movies, music and little else... I think this is called escapism... guess real life wasn't meant for me... at least, so far... in the first 19 years. Life is OK... bowling with the Chavez sisters is nice... they invited Zak and me over for dinner... really nice ladies... and they are ladies... two sisters and two cousins live together... all in their early 20s... we always have a good time with them... the Base Bowling League is going real well... we are still unbeaten and headed for a head-to-head showdown with the cocky, overbearing and arrogance and very, very good NCO team. Thought you might like to take a gander at the new 1959 cars... my family and I always made it a ritual to go to all of the car dealers and look at the new cars... my family bought a new 1959 green and yellow Impala... never liked that color... nor the car... you can see it below... on second thought, the green and yellow was not as bad as I remembered... it's kind of growing on me now. EC didn't like the 1959 cars... they look a little bit too extreme to me in design... too much fins and big, ugly bumpers... but there were some beauties... I like the Ford with its chrome fenders best... but don't like the front bumpers on it... UGH. Here are the 1959 cars. Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-26-2022 at 07:04 PM. |

Buick and Lincoln... the Buick is nice and clean and neat... the Lincoln is little square and clunky looking.

Plymouth and Dodge... they are kind of snazzy... except for the bulky front bumpers.

EC can't forget the foreign cars.
Jaguar and Mercedes... I dig the Jaguar... the Mercedes is just too basic for me... nothing special. After taking another look, I think out of the 10 cars, the Jaguar is my favorite... neat and cleaner lines... and I love that hood ornament... it's a shame Jaguar discontinued putting them on the hood... people would steal them. Nope, don't think EC will be able to afford a new Jaguar this year... the cost of a new one is about $5000... my pay is all of $78 per month... seems to me, all I can afford is to steal me a Jaguar hood ornament. MY LIFE IN 1959
EC's Wishin' Life Is Devine in '59 Yep, EC loves sports... mainly baseball, but I kept track of the NFL and NBA, too... here's a recap of Major League baseball in 1959. The 1959 World Series featured the National League champion Los Angeles Dodgers beating the American League champion Chicago White Sox, 4–2. Each of the three games played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum drew record crowds, Game 5's attendance of 92,706 continues to be a World Series record to this day, and one that cannot feasibly be broken in any modern ballpark. After finishing seventh in 1958, the Dodgers rebounded in 1959. The National League pennant race was a season-long three-way battle between the Dodgers, the two-time defending N.L. champion Milwaukee Braves and the San Francisco Giants. Walt Alston was the Dodger skipper. The Dodgers beat the Braves in a two-game playoff. Los Angeles took the first game 3-2, taking the lead in the top of the 6th. Reliever Larry Sherry came in and nailed it down, retiring 12 of the 13 Braves he faced. In the second game the Dodgers had to rally for a 5-2 deficit in the bottom of the 9th. They won it 6-5 and advanced to the World Series. Managed by Al Lopez, the White Sox were built on pitching, speed and defense. Nicknamed the "Go-go Sox", they were last in the A.L. in home runs but led the league in stolen bases, fielding percentage, and lowest team ERA. They battled the Cleveland Indians for the American League pennant, and after a close race, the White Sox built a 6+1⁄2 game lead in early September. The Indians could get no closer than 3+1⁄2 games, and when the White Sox beat Cleveland 4–2 on September 22, they clinched the pennant with three games to play. The White Sox were only the second team besides the Yankees to win the A.L. pennant between 1949 and 1964 inclusive; the other was the 1954 Indians, also managed by Al Lopez. Monday, May 11, 1959 YANKS OUTSCORE ZIPS IN SHOOTOUT, NOW SUPREME IN SUPREME LEAGUE Two of the three co-leaders couldn't stand the prosperity of the top spot in the South Island Supreme League and tumbled out of the top spot, leaving New Yerby all alone in first place... the Yankees took care of the Zebulon Zips 16-14 in a shootout, upping their season mark to 5-1 and dropping the Zips back to 4-2... Meraux also lost and fell back in the pennant race... the Tigers were upended 9-8 by the up-and-coming Jackson Jackalopes, who have now won 3 straight and climbed up into a 3-way tie for second place with Zebulon and Meraux. In other Supreme League games Bar Harbor battered St. Dominic 12-8 and Mystic downed the Delta Stars 6-3. Supreme League Stars of the Week |
