I don't know. The team doesn't look completely inept offensively to me. They may not compete for the title, but upper half should be easily attainable by them.

Brooklyn (3) at Kansas City (8): Hosea Alexander (36-4.8) (1-2) over Henry Rawls (31-4.3) (3-6). Alexander allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out no one. At bat, he had 3 hits with a double and an RBI. Rawls allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 3. SS Fred Umbaugh (24-5.4) had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Baltimore (7) at Chicago (8) in 11 innings: Fred Barrow (33-4.7) (1-2) in relief of Pony Stanley (22-6.2) over Sammy O'Quinn (23-5.9) (2-1). Barrow went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out a batter. Stanley went 9 innings, allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. O'Quinn went the distance, allowed 10 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. A 2-out single by LF Candy Simpson (26-6.8) tied the game in the bottom of the 9th. 2B Henry Potter (31-6.4) led off the bottom of the 11th with a walk, went to 2nd on a passed ball, stole third and scored when the catcher threw the ball away. He had 2 walks, a triple and scored 3 runs. For the O's, RF Bill Troutman (32-5.1) hit a triple and a home run and had 4 RBIs.

Ex-Mutual Jim Cook (31-5.9) is pitching in the Pittsburgh organization this season and is currently assigned to the Newark Domestics of the Eastern League (A). He shut out the Jersey City Skeeters on 4 hits to improve his record to 10-0. He walked 1 and struck out 5. With Tom Adams (30-6.0) and Tom Lilly (25-6.4) on the big league roster, it will be hard for Cook to get any major league innings this season unless there is an injury.

Detroit Wolverines (10-5 .667 2 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
New York Gothams (6-9 .400 6 GB 5th place)

Hank Anderson, Det. (31-7.7) (L 5-2 2.80 6.8-1.8-3.7 H-BB-K/9) vs. John Allen, N.Y. (26-6.4) (R 3-2 4.89 10.0-3.5-5.3)

Won - 6 to 5

Anderson allowed 13 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4.

We had 10 hits and made 4 errors. New York made 5.

2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) had 2 hits with a triple (the third game in a row he has tripled), stole a base and scored a run. LF Ben Smith (25-6.7) had 2 hits, a walk, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. 1B George House (26-4.3) had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. C Evan Eckberg (29-3.5) had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. He also threw out 2 of the 3 runners that attempted to steal, but also had 2 passed balls. He now has 17 passed balls in 12 games started, 3rd most in the league. 3B Sam Boullion (25-4.8) hit a double for an RBI and drew a walk. SS Al Shaffer went hitless and his average now stands at .129. As he did not hit much better last season, we have determined that his Spring showing was done with smoke and mirrors and he will not be on the train to Boston with the rest of the team, but will be headed to Syracuse. SS Sam Swanger (32-4.8), who will not hit a lot better, but should play phenomenal defense will meet us in Boston.

For New York, 2B Charlie Smith (27-5.6) had 4 hits and an RBI.

Liberty League:

Cleveland (10) at Rochester (7): Willis Kornfield (32-6.0) (6-3) over William Rose (34-4.9) (2-4). Kornfield allowed 10 hits, walked 4 and struck out 5. Stevens allowed 10 hits, 3 walks and struck out 7. 2B Mike Stables (29-7.1) had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. Manager/1B Pete Bucolo (37-4.1) had 2 hits with a double and an RBI. LF Dan Abrams (26-5.1) pulled a muscle and will have to miss about 3 weeks. The Red Caps have won 6 in a row and 11 of their last 12.

Grand National Association:

Omaha (5) at Pittsburgh (12): Tom Adams (30-6.0) (8-2) over Tom Lee (27-6.0) (3-1). Adams allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had 2 hits, a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. Lee was obviously rusty after having not pitched in almost a month, but the 7 Omaha errors did not help matters any. Pittsburgh did not commit a miscue. 2B Dan White (25-5.1) had 3 hits, stole a base and scored 3 runs. C Wilson Wendling (24-4.1) had 3 hits, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. McSherry allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. All the scoring was done by the 4th inning. SS Lou Bohus (25-5.4) had 3 hits and scored a run. For Providence, manager/1B Paul Fenner (36-4.6) had 3 hits and an RBI. Milwaukee has won 6 in a row.

Brooklyn (10) at Kansas City (11): Al McClaughry (21-5.6) (2-0) in relief of Frank Parsons (31-5.8) over Nate Kendall (36-5.4) (4-1). The Cowboys scored 4 times in the bottom of the 9th to win. RF Tommy Dyer (27-3.8) had 2 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Rookie LF Fred Umbaugh (24-5.4) had 3 hits and scored a run. LF Dan Mitchell (34-3.5) injured his knee and will miss the next 4 or 5 weeks, they say.

Detroit Wolverines (11-5 .688 2 GB tied for 2nd place in the Liberty League) at
Boston Red Caps (13-3 .813 1st place)

We begin a 3 game set with the manager/1B Pete Bucolo (37-4.1) and his 4-time defending champion Red Caps today, though we will play 2 and then go to Troy for two and back here for 1 and then back to Troy for 3 more. Boston has won 6 in a row and 11 of their last 12. We have won 5 in a row. Something has got to give and i got a feeling I know who it will be. But if we have designs on the Championship, we will have to beat the Red Caps. Boston is 2nd in the league in runs scored with 6.9 per game (Detroit is 5th with 5.0). They are first in fewest runs allowed with 3.8 (Detroit is down to 3rd with 4.1). Their payroll is almost 3 times that of the Wolverines. Their South End Grounds is probably the best park for pitchers outside of Rochester's Culver Field in the Liberty League.

William McLeod, Det. (26-5.6) (R 5-2 1.59 6.5-2.9-4.6 H-BB-K/9) vs. Freddy Wood, Bos. (29-6.3) (R 3-0 0.00 4.0-3.3-4.7)

Won - 6 to 4

McLeod allowed 10 hits, 5 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run.

Wood gave us 8 hits, no walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit, a walk and an RBI. In his first 3 starts he had only allowed 6 runs total, all unearned. We doubled that and gave him his first earned runs of the season, to boot (3).

We made 1 error and Boston made 5. We more often than not came up with a big defensive play when they threatened to start a rally.

RF Joe Kraus (28-7.9) had 2 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. LF Ben Smith (25-6.7) had 3 hits with a double, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. He had his 3rd straight multi-hit game and 5th in his last 5 starts. He now leads the Liberty League in batting average (.385) and he is tied for the lead in hits (25) and runs scored (18). 1B George House (26-4.3) hit a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. SS Sam Swanger (32-4.8) did not get a hit, but played great defense, as anticipated. He made an excellent diving stop to rob a hit and in the bottom of the 9th after McLeod had walked a batter with 1 out, he started a double play to end the game.

For Boston, 2B Mike Stables (29-7.1) had 2 hits with a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. Like Ben Smith, he had his 3rd straight multi-hit game and has had 5 in his last 6 starts. SS John Ingling (25-4.6) had 3 hits with a double and scored a run.

Liberty League:
Washington (3) at Rochester (4): Bill McClean (39-6.0) (2-7) over Lou Townley (23-3.4) (3-6). McClean allowed 4 hits, walked 2 and struck out 3. Townley allowed 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 9. At bat, he had a hit and 2 RBIs. CF John Meredith (30-6.0) hit a double and had 2 RBIs. 1B Elbert Fuccillo (33-6.4) had a hit, 2 walks and the other 2 RBIs.

Cleveland (5) at Troy (7): Harry Lamb (30-6.4) (7-1) over Tom Marshman (34-4.7) (3-4). Lamb allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 2. Marshman allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 1. Cleveland made 11 errors. For the Spiders, C Kid Wright (30-7.3) had 3 hits with a double and his 3rd home run of the season and had 3 RBIs. He also contributed 3 errors to the pile.

Cincinnati (3) at New York (2): Lou Ellard (27-6.3) (2-4) over Count Childs (29-3.1) (3-6). Ellard allowed 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 7. Childs allowed 4 hits, 5 walks and struck out 6. All of the scoring was done by the 5th inning. For the Gothams, RF Willie Rudd (34-5.2) pule a muscle in his back and will miss about 5 weeks.

Grand National Association:

Detroit Wolverines (12-6 .667 2 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Troy Haymakers (13-5 .722 2nd place)

We begin a 5 game set with manager/CF John Confair (31-6.6) and his Haymakers today, interrupted by a short one game trip back to Boston on Wednesday. The Haymakers lead the Liberty League with 7.1 runs scored per game (Detroit is 5th with 5.1), They are tied for first in runs allowed with 4.0 per game (Detroit is 3rd with 4.3). The Troy Ball Club Grounds is a good place for hitters to ply their trade.

I called up CF Dusty Godwin (25-6.7) to play center and lead off against right-handers.

Tommy Shearin, Det. (27-5.7) (R 0-1 3.86 12.2-1.9-1.9 H-BB-K/9) vs. Sal DeVaux, Troy (30-3.5) (R 1-2 2.67 6.0-2.0-4.3)

Lost - 4 to 2

Shearin allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 2. He then left and boarded a train for Syracuse. I'm calling up Ed Bush (25-5.3).

DeVaux gave us 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1.

We made 5 errors and Troy made 1. If we are going to beat the likes of Boston and Troy, we cannot make more errors than they do.

CF Dusty Godwin (25-6.7) had 2 hits with a triple and scored a run. SS Sam Swanger (32-4.8) had 2 hits, but made an error.

For Troy, 3B Sam Cowan (29-5.1) provided all the offense they needed. He had 3 hits with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs.

Liberty League:

Cincinnati (4) at Rochester (3): Tom Blomberg (27-4.7) (2-1) over William Rose (34-4.9) (2-5). Blomberg allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. Rose allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. Is that the original wonky NL schedule? Because I can't imagine that a human intentionally would have scheduled such chaos as the Wolvies have to go through right now. Betting on a drunk chimpanzee. On crack.

It is the real NL Schedule. The actual teams were shuttling between Philadelphia and New York.

Detroit Wolverines (12-7 .632 2 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Troy Haymakers (14-5 .737 tied for 1st place)

Last year's batting champ, LF Bert Gellis (24-5.5) makes his season debut today after injuring himself in Spring Training. He played a few games for Albany in A Ball to get back in shape.

William McLeod, Det. (26-5.6) (R 6-2 1.89 6.9-3.2-4.5 H-BB-K/9) vs. Harry Lamb, Troy (30-6.4) (R 7-1 2.28 8.7-1.5-3.9)

Won - 3 to 2 in 21 innings

Editor's Note: This is the longest game I have ever managed in OOTP, going all the back to OOTP '99!

McLeod shut them out for 8.2 innings and then, with runners at 2nd and 3rd, P Harry Lamb singled them both home to tie the game and make me apoplectic.

Times we nearly lost it:
In the bottom of the 10th, the Haymakers got a runner to 3rd with only 1 out.
In the bottom of the 11th, Troy's lead-off man reached second on a 2-base throwing error, but the next batter lined to centerfield and the runner was doubled off.
In the bottom of the 15th, Troy got a man into scoring position with 1 out, and 3rd with 2 outs (Passed ball anyone?).
In the bottom of the 18th, the Haymaker's lead-off man reached second on a single and an error, but went no further.

McLeod retired the last 11 batters of the game.

We scored in the 21st on a lead-off single by CF Dusty Godwin (25-6.7). He stole 2nd ans went to third on the catcher's error. 2b Jocko Cole (23-6.1) then hit one to the warning track in center to score a run. We had 15 scoreless innings in between runs.

See the box score for yourself at the end of this dispatch.

Liberty League:
Washington (11) at New York (2): Lou Townley (23-3.4) (5-6) over Count Childs (29-3.1) (4-7). Townley allowed 5 hits, 4 walks and struck out 4. 1B Willie Burton (30-8.5) had 3 hits, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. LF Kid Orr (26-5.6) had 3 hits with his 4th home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. For the Gothams, 3B Charlie Whitney (34-4.5) broke his finger and will miss at least a month.

Cleveland (1) at Boston (8): Joe Peters (29-4.9) (8-1) over Willis Kornfield (32-6.0) (6-5). Peters allowed 2 hits, 4 walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. RF Charlie Warner (31-9.2) had 2 hits with a double, a walk, scored a run and had 3 RBIs.

At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. CF Alex Carroll (28-4.4) had 2 hits with a double, got beaned and scored 2 runs. 2B Pat Millis (24-7.2) had 2 hits with a triple and 2 RBIs. The losing streak reached 12 games. I cannot remember a longer one in the Liberty League.

Milwaukee (9) at Kansas City (8): Dan Burton (29-4.9) (11-7) over Frank Parsons (31-5.8) (7-9). Burton allowed 6 hits, 4 walks and struck out no one. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. Parsons allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. 2B Frank Reardon (30-5.7) only had a single and a walk, but had 3 RBIs.

Detroit Wolverines (13-7 .650 2 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Boston Red Caps (15-5 .750 1st place)

Since the Red Caps were so rude to Hank Anderson (31-7.7) last time out, Ed Bush will make his season debut today. Plus Boston is the only team in the league with a winning record against left-handers, of which Anderson is one.

If we can somehow win today and beat Lamb and Peters, probably the two best pitchers in the Liberty League, in back-to-back games it would be huge and signal to the Haymakers and Red Caps that they are in for a fight all season! However, we are giving a lot of guys the fay off after the marathon in Troy yesterday.

Ed Bush, Det. (25-5.3) (R 8-2 1.40 5.5-2.1-5.5 in A Ball H-BB-K/9) vs. Joe Peters, Bos. (29-4.9) (L 8-1 2.11 6.8-2.8-6.7)

Lost - 6 to 5

1B Jack Warren (32-7.2) hits a 2out double in the 9th with a runner on first, but PH George House (26-4.3) was thrown out a the plate by CF Pat Stafford (24-5.4) to end the game.

Bush allowed 8 hits, 5 walks and struck out 6.

Peters gave us 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI.

We made 4 errors and Boston made 3.

1B Jack Warren had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. 2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) had a hit, a walk, stole 2 bases, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Harley Becker (31-6.8) had 2 hits and scored a run, but made 2 errors. C Dave Caplan (29-5.5) had 2 hits with a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs, but also made 2 errors. RF Jackie Porter (30-6.3) had 2 hits and scored a run.

For Boston, LF Val Cornell (27-3.5) had 3 hits with a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. Manager/1B Pete Bucolo (37-4.1) hit s triple, walked twice, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Liberty League:
Washington (8) at Rochester (4): John Ritch (30-7.8) (3-4) over William Rose (34-4.9) (2-6). Ritch allowed 11 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. Rose allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. 2B Bill Scott (29-3.5) had 2 hits, a walk, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Cleveland (1) at Troy (2): Miah Turner (24-5.3) (6-2) over Tom Marshman (34-4.7) (3-5). Turner allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 6. Marshman allowed 6 hits, walked 3 and struck out 2. All the scoring was done by the 5th inning. Manager/CF John Confair (31-6.6), in the first game that he has put himself in the lineup, had 2 hits with a triple and an RBI.

Time for holiday double-headers!

Editor's Note: In real life Chicago and Detroit played mixed double-headers at Providence and Boston, with Chicago playing at Providence in the morning and at Boston in the afternoon. Those 2 cities are about 50 miles apart, while Troy and Boston are about 140 miles apart. So it is not inconceivable that the following double-header could have taken place. They thought this stuff was cool back then, I guess.

Game 1
Detroit Wolverines (14-8 .636 2 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Boston Red Caps (16-6 .727 1st place)

William McLeod, Det. (26-5.6) (R 7-2 1.46 6.4-2.8-3.8 H-BB-K/9) vs. Freddy Wood, Bos. (29-6.3) (R 3-2 1.00 5.6-2.2-5.0)

Won - 5 to 3

McLeod allowed 6 hits, 1 walk (!!) and struck out 6. He had 2 hits at bat.

We had 10 hits and made 5 errors. Boston made 4.

2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. LF Ben Smith (25-6.7) had 2 hits and an RBI. 3B Sam Boullion (25-4.8) hit a double and scored a run.

Game 2
Detroit Wolverines (15-8 .652 1 GB tied for 2nd place in the Liberty League) at
Troy Haymakers (15-8 .652 1 GB tied for 2nd place)

Hank Anderson, Det. (32-7.7) (L 7-3 3.03 8.2-1.9-3.6) vs. Sal DeVaux, Troy (30-3.5) (R 2-2 2.25 6.3-1.8-3.5)

Lost - 6 to 5 in 11 innings

With 2 outs in the bottom of the 11th, PH John Hagadorn (35-6.3), one of the last 2 original Haymakers left on the team, singled off the glove of SS Sam Swanger (32-4.8) to win the game. C Henry Newman (31-3.6) is the other player to appear for the Haymakers in 1876 that is still on the team.

Anderson allowed 10 hits, walked 1 and struck out 1. At bat, he had 2 hits with a double and scored 2 runs.

We had 15 hits and made 5 errors. Troy made 9 errors.

How did we only get 5 runs and lose? It's a mystery.

CF Dusty Godwin (25-6.7) had 2 hits with a double, a walk and had an RBI, but no runs scored from the lead-off spot. RF Joe Kraus (28-7.9) had 3 hits, stole a base and had an RBI, but no runs from the #2 spot. 2B Jocko Cole (23-6.1) hit a double and scored a run. 3B Sam Boullion (25-4.8) had 3 hits, a walk and an RBI.

For Troy, 3b Sam Cowan (29-5.1) had 2 hits with a double, a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. C Henry Newman had 3 hits and scored 2 runs, but also made 4 errors.

Liberty League:
Cleveland (5) at Troy (2) Game 1: Tom Marshman (34-4.7) (4-5) over Harry Lamb (30-6.4) (7-3). Marshman allowed 9 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had 3 hits with a triple and scored 3 runs. Lamb allowed 10 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. 1B Clipper Wilson (29-4.4) hit 2 doubles and scored a run.

Cleveland (9) at Boston (1) Game 2: Bill Henrichs (26-7.4) over Charlie Morlock (35-6.7) (4-3). Henrichs allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits, a walk and an RBI. LF Joe Coffey (28-5.2) had 4 hits with a double, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Cincinnati (5) at Rochester (4) Game 1: Lou Ellard (27-6.3) (4-4) over William Rose (34-4.9) (2-7). Ellard allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Rose allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. LF Fleet Wilcox (28-4.9) hit a triple, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. For Rochester, 1B Elbert Fuccillo (33-5.4) will miss at least a month with a torn muscle in his back. He is leading the team in RBIs, and they do not need it to be any harder to score runs.

Cincinnati (3) at Rochester (4) Game 2: Bill Henson (28-6.5) (1-2) over Tom Blomberg (27-4.7) (2-2). Henson allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. Blomberg allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. LF John Rodgers (33-4.4), who has been in a slump since the start of the season, had 4 hits, stole a base and scored a run.

Washington (14) at New York (3) Game 1: Lou Townley (23-3.4) (7-6) over Count Childs (29-3.1) (4-9). Townley allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit, 2 walks and scored a run. This kid looks like the real deal! C Fred Smith (30-6.8) had 3 hits with a home run, a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. 1B Willie Burton (30-8.5) had 2 hits with a double, 2 walks, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. LF Kid Orr (26-5.6) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI.

Washington (5) at New York (6) Game 2: Al Stone (25-3.1) (1-2) over John Ritch (30-7.8) (3-5). Stone allowed 8 hits, 5 walks and struck out 5. RF Ed Glass (25-4.5) doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the 9th. He had 3 hits. 3B Tacks Strange (31-5.4), who scored the winning run, had 2 hits with a double and scored 3 times.

Grand National Association:

Kansas City (5) at Brooklyn (7) Game 1: Henry Rawls (31-4.3) (4-9) over Frank Parsons (31-5.8) (7-11). The losing streak ends at 13 games! Rawls allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. RF Tom Campbell (26-3.6) had 3 hits with a triple, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 3B Kid Angell (35-6.0) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. For KC, 1B Tommy Dyer (27-3.8) went hitless, ending his streak at 22 games.

Kansas City (8) at Brooklyn (10) Game 2: Dick Cole (31-5.9) (6-8) over Hosea Alexander (36-4.8) (2-4). Now, they have a winning streak! 3B Kid Angell (35-6.0) won the game with a 1-out 2-run home run in the bottom of the 9th. He also hit a double, drew a walk, scored twice and had 3 RBIs. CF John Peterson (25-7.0) had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 3 runs and had an RBI.

Providence (10) at Baltimore (4) Game 1: Frank McSherry (29-4.1) (9-6) over Pop Yurkovich (33-5.6) (5-9). McSherry allowed 10 hits, 4 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit and 2 RBIs. Baltimore made 13 errors. Poor ol' Pop. 3B Tom Hepner (23-7.1) had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. He almost doubled his hit total in one day. Prior to this game he was 4 for 36 on the season.

Providence (3) at Baltimore (2) in 10 innings Game 2: Sam Paul (30-5.4) (5-7) over Tom Wilmarth (25-5.4) (5-7). In 9 innings, Paul allowed 10 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. Egyptian Hooker (37-3.9) came on in the bottom of the 10th after Paul allowed a lead-off single. He got the first batter to ground into a double play and popped up the second batter to preserve the victory. In 10 innings, Wilmarth allowed 11 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. The Grays won despite making 8 errors to 2 for the O's. Manager/1B Paul Fenner (36-4.6) had 3 hits, stole a base and had an RBI. LF Charlie Gregor (26-5.2) had 4 hits with a double and scored a run.

Chicago (3) at Omaha (2) Game 2: Pony Stanley (22-6.2) (4-0) over Sid Duncan (31-6.8) (2-11). Stanley allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. Duncan allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck some one out (1)! With the game tied at 2, 2B John Sullivan (39-4.0) led off the top of the 9th with a triple and scored to put the Colts in front. LF Candy Simpson (26-6.8), the reigning 2-time MVP, suffered a high ankle sprain and will miss the next 3 to 4 weeks.

Pittsburgh (1) at Milwaukee (2) in 13 innings Game 1: Dan Burton (30-4.9) (12-7) over Tom Lilly (25-6.4) (11-5). In 13 innings, Burton allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. Lilly allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. With 1 out in the bottom of the 13th, 1B Pat Ross (28-5.4) doubled and C Jimmy Babcock (28-6.9) singled him home.
