1973 Inflation has a significant impact on peoples lives around the world with the UK inflation rate running at 8.4% and the US running at 6.16% . This causes problems in every aspect of peoples lives from the price of Gas, Food and Bills , which in turn causes higher wages and the spiral continues, much of this is caused by the Arab members of the (OPEC) restricting the flow of oil to countries supporting Israel as part of the Yom Kippur War. And the start of a Recession in Europe causing increased unemployment and a 3 day week in the UK. Meanwhile in the US two important cases dominate the news with Roe v. Wade making abortion a US constitutional right and the start of the Watergate hearings in the US Senate, and due to price increase of gas the Japanese car manufacturers with smaller engines and more efficient have an impact of the US car industry

With spring training set to start later this week, Atlanta Braves' slugger Hank Aaron is rumored to be considering retirement.

Aaron, 38, has been nagged by assorted leg and back ailments since the end of last season. It is questionable if the Mobile, Alabama native will be ready when spring training begins.

Aaron is the Joy in Mudville's career leader in home runs (107) and RBIs (323). He is coming off a second straight season that saw his average dip to .241. Yet his power numbers rebounded to 35 homers and 110 RBIs.

The two-time National League All-Star is expected to see more time at first base rather than his accustomed right field position.

Aaron was the 1970 NL Most Valuable Player. He finished fifth in NL MVP voting this past season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Texas Rangers struck a four-player deal early Monday morning.

The Pirates agreed to send outfielders Willie Crawford and Johnny Jeter to the Rangers for pitcher Bill Gogolewski and outfielder Jesus Alou.

Both teams won their respective divisions last season before losing in the playoffs.

Gogolewski, 25, was 18-10 with a 2.92 ERA in 44 games with Texas a year ago. The right-hander will most likely take one of the starting slots in the Pittsburgh rotation.

Alou, 30, originally played with Houston before being dealt to then-Washington Senators. A year ago with Texas, Alou hit just .151 in 73 at-bats. He will join his brother Matty with the Pirates.

Crawford has also been traded in a previous deal. The 26-year-old was part of a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers two years ago. Crawford hit .241 with six home runs and 38 RBIs in 307 at-bats for Pittsburgh last year.

Jeter, 28, also played a reserver outfield role for the Pirates. In 138 at-bats, Jeter hit .333 with three homers and 14 RBIs.

This may later come to be known as The Trade That Shook Memorial Stadium.

The Baltimore Orioles raised more than a few eyebrows in the Joy in Mudville League by trading American League Most Valuable Player Dick Allen to the Kansas City Royals.

The Orioles dealt Allen and pitcher Marty Pattin to the Royals in exchange for Gold Glove center fielder Amos Otis and a second-round draft pick.

Allen is coming off the best season of his career. The 30-year-old batted .307 with 38 home runs and 118 RBIs. He also stole a team-high 22 bases. Allen returns to the National League where he played in 1970 and '71 with the St. Louis Cardinals. He came to Baltimore in a trade for Frank Robinson and Andy Etchebarren.

In the meantime, the 25-year-old Otis hit .293 with 14 home runs and 70 RBIs for Kansas City. He also swiped 34 bases.

Pattin, 29, has been well traveled. Originally a Milwaukee Brewer, Pattin also spent time with San Diego before joining Baltimore. The right-hander appeared in 13 games for the Orioles. He compiled a 3-2 record with a 3.50 ERA in 13 games.

This marks the second time Baltimore has dealt away a league MVP. First baseman Boog Powell was traded to the New York Mets for pitcher Nolan Ryan following the 1971 season. Powell won the award for 1970.

At a joint meeting of owners, all 24 approve the use of the designated hitter in the American League starting this season in a three-year experiment. The owners also refer the possibility of interleague play to a committee for study. Yankees Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich shock the baseball world and provide standup comics with a wealth of material when it is revealed the two pitchers have switched families, swapped wives and dogs. Eleven weeks after his death in a plane crash, Roberto Clemente is voted into the Hall of Fame in a special election which waives the required five-year waiting period. Ron Blomberg becomes the first DH in history when he steps up to the plate for the Yankees against Boston in Fenway Park on April 6. Nolan Ryan becomes only the second pitcher ever to throw two no-hitters in a single season. Pitchers Jim and Gaylord Perry are the first brothers to face each other in the AL. Willie Mays of the Mets hits his 660th--and final--career home run off the Reds' Don Gullett. Mays later becomes the oldest non-pitcher to appear in a World Series game at age 42. Six days after being fired as manager of the Tigers, Billy Martin is hired by the Rangers. Frank Robinson's homer on Sept. 19 gives him at least one in all 32 major league parks. The Pirates agreed to send outfielders Willie Crawford and Johnny Jeter to the Rangers for pitcher Bill Gogolewski and outfielder Jesus Alou. Both teams won their respective divisions last season before losing in the playoffs. Gogolewski, 25, was 18-10 with a 2.92 ERA in 44 games with Texas a year ago. The right-hander will most likely take one of the starting slots in the Pittsburgh rotation. Alou, 30, originally played with Houston before being dealt to then-Washington Senators. A year ago with Texas, Alou hit just .151 in 73 at-bats. He will join his brother Matty with the Pirates. Crawford has also been traded in a previous deal. The 26-year-old was part of a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers two years ago. Crawford hit .241 with six home runs and 38 RBIs in 307 at-bats for Pittsburgh last year. The Baltimore Orioles raised more than a few eyebrows in the Joy in Mudville League by trading American League Most Valuable Player Dick Allen to the Kansas City Royals. The Orioles dealt Allen and pitcher Marty Pattin to the Royals in exchange for Gold Glove center fielder Amos Otis and a second-round draft pick. Allen is coming off the best season of his career. The 30-year-old batted .307 with 38 home runs and 118 RBIs. He also stole a team-high 22 bases. Allen returns to the National League where he played in 1970 and '71 with the St. Louis Cardinals. He came to Baltimore in a trade for Frank Robinson and Andy Etchebarren. In the meantime, the 25-year-old Otis hit .293 with 14 home runs and 70 RBIs for Kansas City. He also swiped 34 bases. Pattin, 29, has been well traveled. Originally a Milwaukee Brewer, Pattin also spent time with San Diego before joining Baltimore. The right-hander appeared in 13 games for the Orioles. He compiled a 3-2 record with a 3.50 ERA in 13 games. This marks the second time Baltimore has dealt away a league MVP. First baseman Boog Powell was traded to the New York Mets for pitcher Nolan Ryan following the 1971 season. Powell won the award for 1970.
