AL looks like Yankees pitching vs. A's hitting, but man the Tigers look like they're gonna have a potent lineup. If they could pick up 1 more pitcher, they could contend

NL I think the Braves run away with, they look like they have pitching and hitting better than rest of league

April 1933

The city of Philadelphia is once again alive with excitement as last year's World Series combatants, the A's and Phillies, are atop their respective leagues after April ended. So far, pitchers Ossie Costin and "Punchy" Cote have been stellar for the A's. Meanwhile, the White Sox have gotten outstanding pitching from #4 starter George Cone, and their lineup has benefitted from shortstop Jamie Kubic's .409 average. Meanwhile, no other AL team has a winning record, and the Yankees and Browns are struggling and tied for last.

After playing well in the early goings of April, Detroit decided to make a serious run at the pennant by addressing their pitching needs. They acquired starter Jake Brenning from the Cardinals in return for solid third baseman Martin Bartholomew and two prospects. The Tigers rotations is far from formidable, but it has improved with the trade.

Thus far, the Phillies offense has been good enough to win, thanks largely to shortstop Dale "The Wizard" Reneau's .404 average. Their pitching is as stellar as always with three starters posting sub-3.00 ERA's. The Reds are out to prove that last season was not a fluke, as they finished the month in 2nd. Meanwhile, the Braves have struggled in several areas and are already 6 games back. 4th starter "Jersey" Piccininno is out until early June with an elbow fracture. However, his replacement Damon Sinnickson has done well (2-2, 3.96).

Batters of the Month:

AL - Quenton Misisca, 1B, Detroit Tigers - He hit .320 with 6 home runs, 26 RBI and 16 runs scored.

NL - Dale "The Wizard" Reneau, SS, Philadelphia Phillies - He hit .404 with 19 RBI and 18 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - George Cone, Chicago White Sox - He was 3-0 with a 1.77 ERA.

NL - David Wickersham, Chicago Cubs - He was 5-1 with a 2.00 ERA and 1 shutout.

did he only get part-time play? I'm curious, to hit .405 and only scoring 11 times seems a little low.

But of course the Yankees didn't play to well, so we could be very cold and just not hitting anybody in. THanks Matt! I love night updates when I'm bored at the computer :-p

He played in all but 1 of their games this month & of the 23 games he played, he started all but 2... The Yanks just got off to a lousy start... He's actually tied for 3rd on the team in runs scored...

May 1933

The A's went 17-9 this month, extending their lead over the White Sox to 7 games. The White Sox were dealt a blow when first baseman Sonny Saville, who was just named AL POTW on May 22nd, tore a muscle in his thigh. The injury is severe enough that doctors have suggested that the 25-year-old end his career. Saville hit double-digit homeruns in each of his first three seasons, including 15 last year. He struggled in April, but hit .292 with 3 homeruns and 20 RBI in May before the injury. The team had no backup at first, so they acquired 27-year-old Louis Kirkes from Pittsburgh. Kirkes is a capable player, but he may be overwhelmed by the responsibilities of playing first base every day in a pennant race.

The Phillies went 19-9 and pulled further away from most NL teams. The Cubs kept pace with an 18-10 record, falling another game back but moving into 2nd. The Reds went 8-18 and dropped into a tie with the Braves for 5th place. Pittsburgh moved into second place for a few days, but a rough stretch at the end of the month dropped them to .500.

If Ive done the math right, Pops is doing a pretty fair Steve Carlton imitation: 10-2 on a pretty dismal Dodger team. Great fun, Matt!

WEB PAGES UPDATED, INCLUDING PLAYER PAGES...

June 1933

The A's went 20-8 and have pulled almost completely away from the rest of the league. Only the White Sox have a winning record among the stragglers, and they are 12.5 games back. Currently, the A's offense has scored the most runs in the majors, but they have finally gotten full support from a pitching staff that has the 5th best ERA at 3.75.

In the NL, the Cubs and Phillies battled all month long and Chicago wound up on top halfway through the season. Brooklyn went 18-12 and climbed into 3rd place. They are the only other NL team with a winning record. Many people's early favorite was Boston, but they have not crept above .500 all season. A big key to their struggles is the fact that at one time or another any one of their four regular starting pitchers was injured. Often times, two or more of them were hurt at the same time. After Whiskey Allen Jr. was hurt last month, the team's top two hurlers - Otto Kahle and Bourbon Allen - each suffered injuries this month.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Jerry "Slap" Hertzog, 2B, Philadelphia Athletics - He hit .392 with 4 homeruns, 19 RBI and 24 runs scored.

NL - Foglesong Allen, LF, New York Giants - He hit .392 with 22 RBI, 22 runs scored and 10 steals.

Pitchers of the Month:

Yes, he's now 15-2 with a major league-leading 1.81 ERA! He is just 23, but he collected his 100th win this month. He is definitely one of the most talented young pitchers out there.

Adolph's still going strong, had a down year last year for his standards, .343, but this year it looks like he may hit .400 again. I probably just jinxed him, but oh well. Leading career batting average still.

lol... you're right about the amount of time... I'd like to do a little more, but I'd get fired and be divorced if I did... I figured once I started doing this and there were people who enjoyed reading it, why do it if I were not going to go all the way... thanks for the compliment, though... and I really enjoy this league... going so in depth makes the experience so much better because we get to know the players better...

Yea! It's about time he got in the line-up. How can you not play a guy who can hit like this? Maybe this will convince management to put Miller in RF and let Boeken take left.

July 1933

This was one of the most active months the league has seen in some time. First off, the A's won only 7 games the entire month. That allowed the rest of the league to climb out of the 12.5-game hole they had dug themselves into. The White Sox went 15-11 and are now just 5 games back. To their credit, the A's lost their #3 starter Ahrend "Professor" Nagel and their star centerfielder Ben "Rabbi" Baum to injury, but that hardly excuses their terrible performance. Despite their July collapse, no other AL team has truly taken full advantage of the opportunity.

In the NL, the Phillies and Cubs continue to duke it out, with Philadelphia finishing the month on top by 1 game. This happened despite the fact that the Phillies offense has the lowest batting average (.263) and has scored the fewest runs in the majors. They still have the best pitching staff around with a major league best 3.22 ERA. However, the Cubs pitching staff is ranked 2nd with a 3.31 ERA, and their offense has scored the 4th most runs in the majors, even though their team average of .273 is only 8th. With those numbers, one would think the Cubs had the edge.

Along with the A's Nagle and Baum, several key players were injured this month, namely Giants second baseman Bobby "Tree" Martin, Brooklyn ace Frank Smith, Red Sox ace Babe Goodrum and Phillies outfielder Don Stirn. Despite his injury, Goodrum was involved in a trade as the league saw the highest number of July trades in recent memory. Goodrum was dealt across town to the Braves. In return, the Red Sox got oft-injured and much-maligned pitcher Whiskey Allen Jr. Junior was well-known among Braves fans for his career of underachieving. However, the 32-year-old Allen is coming off back-to-back strong seasons in which he has won 42 games. This season, he is just 6-6 after missing more time with injuries, but he has a solid 2.98 ERA, and he posted a 1.90 ERA in July.

By making this trade, the Braves have essentially called it quits this season. It has been an utter disaster for them. After being predicted by many to win the pennant, they have not been above .500 and have lost all of their starting pitchers at one time or another to injury. After trading Allen and "Jersey" Piccininno, 3 of their current 4 starting pitchers were not even on the team on Opening Day. Even though Goodrum is out until late September with an elbow injury, the team thought acquiring him was worth the risk. At age 29, he is younger than Allen and he has a lot of potential. As for Piccininno, he was shipped back to the Giants, where he started his career. In return, the Braves acquired veteran third baseman Steve Varghese. Some say Piccininno and pitching prospect Dan Volpe was a steep price to pay for Varghese, who is on the downside of his career, but the Braves have not had a strong third baseman for many years and Lonnie Mitchell was hitting just .242 there this season.

In other big trades, the Cubs practically stole 25-year-old pitcher Jimmie Northup from the Giants for 24-year-old second baseman Pepper Creighton, who is likely not even starter material. Northup, on the other hand, won 22 games just two seasons ago. Detroit traded longtime star second baseman Kid Fite to the Red Sox in return for pitcher Sam Vidas and two prospects. The Tigers then went out and got slugging centerfielder Fred "Froggy" Borgert from the Giants in return for three prospects. The A's strengthened their rotation with the acquisition of young pitcher Abraham Dickens, who was acquired from the Browns for an outfield prospect.

American League-Pitcher of the Month:
Jethro Lee (WSH)!
He had a record of 5-1 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 1.48.

American League-Batter of the Month:
Ricardo Bowden (BOS)!
He batted .449 in 89 AB, with 3 homers and 18 RBI.

National League-Pitcher of the Month:
Cliff Umbaugh (NYG)!
He had a record of 6-0 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 2.29 and 1 shutout.

National League-Batter of the Month:
Dale Lamberty (NYG)!
He batted .379 in 87 AB, with 1 homers and 15 RBI.

Ancestors:

George "The General" Ward, RF, Braves - Ward hit .375 in 15 games after returning to the lineup. His .401 average no longer qualifies for the batting race because of the time he missed. If he remains healthy, he should qualify by the end of the season.

Sam Kass, CF, Pirates - Kass hit .316 with 13 RBI and 14 runs scored.

Ben "Rabbi" Baum, CF, Athletics - Ben hit .328 in 17 games. He returned to the lineup on July 4th, but he herniated a disk in his back late in the month and will likely be out until early September.

Will Miller, LF, Senators - Will hit .258 with 6 steals in 24 games after returning. He is now 8 steals shy of becoming just the 2nd player in history with 800 stolen bases, and he needs just 10 more to become 1st all-time in that category!

Levi "Tyke" Walls, SS, Giants - Tyke hit .315 with 14 runs scored and 7 steals.

David "Pops" McAuliffe, 3B, Cubs - Pops hit .255 with 12 RBI and 13 runs scored.

August "Fat Gus" Kahle, 3B, Yankees - Gus missed about a week this month with another injury, but he hit .507 with 17 RBI in 19 games!

Kid Fite, 2B, Red Sox - Kid hit .309 with 2 homeruns, 10 RBI and 16 runs scored. On July 30th, he was traded to the Red Sox after 12 seasons in Detroit.

Donald "Duckie" Andrews, 2B, Indians - Duckie hit just .195, dropping his season average to .298.

Salvatore "The Sicilian Saucer" Rossi, 1B, Athletics - Sal hit .318 with 2 homeruns, 10 RBI and 12 runs scored.

Harry Finley, C, Yankees - Harry hit .230 with 4 steals.

Ahrend "The Professor" Nagel, SP, Athletics - Nagel went 1-1 with a 2.65 ERA in 3 starts before injuring his arm. He should return in mid-August. One more win and he will pass "Nasty Ned" Fargo for the most wins by an ancestor.

Whiskey Allen, Jr., SP, Red Sox - Junior went 3-2 with a 1.90 ERA and a shutout. On July 31st, he was traded to the Red Sox for pitcher Babe Goodrum. This was a parting of the ways that had been predicted about 5 years ago.

Otto "Kaiser" Kahle, SP, Braves - Otto went 4-2 with a 1.65 ERA and 1 shutout. He started the season as the ace of a great pitching staff, but now that staff is in disarray.

David Wickersham, SP, Cubs - David went 4-2 with a 3.60 ERA.

Adolf "The Human Torch" Greisbach, SS, Tigers - Adolf hit .341 with 10 RBI and 10 runs scored.

Lloyd Johnson, 1B, Giants - Lloyd hit .294 with 3 homeruns, 20 RBI and 10 runs scored.

Alan Liao, 3B, Reds - Liao hit .310 with 11 RBI and 14 runs scored.

Woody Woodworth, 2B, Browns - Woody hit .315 with 10 runs scored.

Carl "Dutch" Kahle, 3B, Senators - Dutch hit .247 with 9 RBI.

Foglesong Allen, LF, Giants - Allen hit .315 with 13 RBI, 18 runs scored and 8 steals.

John "Bucky" Smith, SP, Cubs - Bucky went 2-2 with a 3.04 ERA.

Leonard "Sunny" Davie, C, White Sox - Sunny hit .263 with 9 RBI.

Swervin' Ervin Skjerly, 2B, Yankees - Ervin hit .365 with 14 runs scored.

Ricardo "Tiny" Bowden, SS, Red Sox - Tiny hit .449 with 3 homeruns, 18 RBI, 21 runs scored and 8 steals. He was named the AL BOTM.

Keith "Dead-Eye" Laverick, 1B, Cardinals - Keith hit .356 with 2 homeruns and 11 RBI.

Frank Smith, SP, Dodgers - Frank went 1-1 with a 1.62 ERA in 3 starts before herniating a disk in his back. He should return in another week.

F.X. Ditty, 2B, Dodgers - Ditty hit .320 with 7 runs scored.

Dewey Mickelsen, LF, Cubs - Dewey hit .241 with 7 RBI.

Wolter "Boeken" Tjeenk-Willink, LF, Senators - Wolter hit .286 in 13 games, but returned to the bench with Miller's return.

Ping "The Outlander" Hung, CF, Yankees - Hung hit .344 with 11 RBI, 18 runs scored and 9 steals.

George "The Joker" Bowers, SP, Indians - Bowers went 3-1 with a 3.45 ERA and a shutout.

Blake "Hitman" Crocitto, SS, Senators - Blake hit .258 with 7 RBI.

David "Harlequin" Hunter, 2B, Braves - David hit .167 with 6 steals in 17 games, but missed time with a sore elbow. He is expected back around August 5th.

Bill "Red" Finley, SP, Senators - Red went 1-5 with a 4.83 ERA.

Jeronimo Arsenault, SP, Browns - Jeronimo went 0-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 2 starts after returning.

Peyton "Flamethrower" Arana, SP, Cardinals - Arana went 3-2 with a 2.41 ERA.

William "Bill" Berry, RF, Indians - Bill hit .270 with 14 runs scored.

Bobby "Tree" Martin, 2B, Giants - Martin hit .235 in 20 games, but he should miss all of August with a torn groin muscle.

Walt "Pops" Gustafson, SP, Red Sox - Walt went 3-1 with a 3.52 ERA over 5 games (3 starts). On July 19th, he threw the first shutout of his career, and it was a doosy. He allowed just 1 run and 2 walks that day against the Browns. However, with the acquisition of Whiskey Allen Jr., Walt was returned to the bullpen.

Trent "Whacker" Roberts, SP, Indians - Roberts went 1-2 with a 3.43 ERA.

Tequila Allen, 3B, Red Sox - Allen returned and hit .218 in 14 games. He is, however, excited to see his half-brother Whiskey Jr. on the team.

1933 All-Star Game
Comiskey Park, Chicago

The "Game of the Century" was played in Chicago's Comiskey Park. The first baserunner of the day was Braves outfielder Roy "The Natural" Hobbs, who drew a walk but was later caught stealing. The first hit in All-Star history was a single by Dodgers first baseman Oscar "The Kid" Vancini in the 2nd off Washington ace Jethro "Dodge" Lee. Vancini also scored the first run when the next batter, Giants third baseman Dale Lamberty, stroked a triple. The first homerun was hit by Athletics centerfielder Ben "Rabbi" Baum. It was a 2-run shot that came in the 4th inning off Brooklyn's Max Baxter, and it gave the AL a 2-1 lead.

All in all, four homeruns were hit. Yankee outfielder "Moonlight" Graham hit a 2-run shot off Buck Anderson in the 5th, and in the same inning, Detroit's Troy Kinnear hit a solo homer off John "Bucky" Smith. The NL's only homerun came in the 8th inning when Giants outfielder Foglesong Allen lifted a long shot off White Sox reliever William Bordui.

A's pitcher Mark Ponfick got the win after pitching a scoreless 4th and 5th inning for the AL. Baxter drew the loss for allowing Baum's game-winning blast. Baum was then named All-Star MVP for going 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored, 3 RBI, a walk and a homerun.

Talk about the biggest screw-over in the history of All-Star games. Swervin Ervin bats .364, good for 3rd best in AL and doesn't even get a call as a reserve!

Edit: I just realized there has been no history in the ALL-STAR game yet. But he still got screwed nonetheless.
