1961 World Series results
1961 World Series: New York Yankees vs. St. Louis Cardinals
Results Game 1, October 4th, 1961, Yankee Stadium Road Win Lifts St. Louis to 1-0 Lead in WS When the games really matter, the St. Louis Cardinals put on their best show, beating the New York Yankees by a final score of 10-8. Rocky Colavito went 3 for 4 with 3 singles and a walk, while adding 2 RBIs and scoring once. St. Louis now leads New York 1-0 in the best-of-7 affair. St. Louis used the clutch hitting of Smoky Burgess to capture the win. The catcher drilled a 2-run double in the top of the 13th inning to give the Cardinals the lead, 9-7. For the game, Burgess had 1 single and 1 double in 6 at-bats. "It wasn't our best performance," said Burgess, "but a win in the playoffs is nothing to sniff at." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Yankee Stadium in New York. Cardinals lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 5th, 1961, Yankee Stadium Raucous Yankee Stadium Crowd Propels Yankees to 7-3 Victory; Series Tied at 1 Behind a bravura effort from starter Ernie Broglio, the New York Yankees topped the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 7-3 and got their first win in the 1961 World Series. Broglio threw 9.0 innings of 3-hit ball for the Yankees. The win moves New York into a 1-1 tie with St. Louis. Hank Aaron helped his team take an early lead with a 2-run single. It came in the first inning, making the score 2-0, Yankees. "They say the first rule of the playoffs is to win the home games," Aaron said afterward. "It feels nice, but it is kind of what we were supposed to do." The next game is set to be played on October 7th, 1961 at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Series tied 1-1 Game 3, October 7th, 1961, Sportsman's Park Road Win Lifts New York to 2-1 Lead in WS Leave it to the veteran. The New York Yankees got a great start from 34-year-old left-hander Billy Pierce, as New York won the contest, 6-1, at Sportsman's Park. Pierce threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball in the win, which allowed the New York to grab a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 series. Pierce went the distance for New York, allowing 1 run on 6 hits, while striking out 3. Cardinals manager Bill Posedel did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Yankees lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 8th, 1961, Sportsman's Park Almost There: New York On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 6-5 Win When the games really matter, the New York Yankees put on their best show, beating the St. Louis Cardinals by a final score of 6-5. Clete Boyer was 2-3 with a home run, while adding 2 RBIs and scoring once. New York now leads St. Louis 3-1 in the best-of-7 affair. New York used a well-timed hit by Dick McAuliffe to capture the win. The second baseman socked a bases-clearing double in the top of the first inning to put the Yankees ahead, 4-0. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important. "I thought I'd have a season or two to get accustomed to everything," McAuliffe said. "I didn't think I'd be here already." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Game 5, October 9th, 1961, Sportsman's Park Yankees Hammered by Wertz, Drop Game 5 to Cardinals He may not do it as often as in his glory days, but Vic Wertz showed that he can still put on a show. The 36-year-old St. Louis first baseman blasted the New York Yankees pitching staff in Game 5 of the World Series at Sportsman's Park, helping the Cardinals gain some ground in their chase for a title. Wertz slugged 2 home runs. He scored 3 times and drove in 2 as the Cardinals secured the 5-3 win. With it, St. Louis cut the Yankees lead to 2-3 in the best-of-7 series. St. Louis took control in the bottom of the sixth. With no one out and a runner on 2nd, Charlie Silvera hit a run-scoring single to make it 4-3, Cardinals. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Cardinals manager Bill Posedel said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." Game 6 is scheduled for Wednesday at Yankee Stadium in New York. Yankees lead series 3-2 Game 6, October 11th, 1961, Yankee Stadium St. Louis Win Evens Series at 3 The St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees will take the World Series to a decisive 7th game. In a must-win situation, the Cardinals beat the Yankees, 3-1, at Yankee Stadium to force the series into what will essentially be a one-game playoff. St. Louis left-hander Jack Kralick had a big role in the win. He threw 9.0 innings of 3-hit ball. Kralick pitched a complete game for St. Louis. The 26-year-old left-hander was charged with 1 run on 3 hits. He struck out 4 during his 122-pitch performance. "Postseason wins taste oh so sweet," said Kralick after the game. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Yankee Stadium in New York. Series tied 3-3 Game 7, October 12th, 1961, Yankee Stadium New York Wins World Series Crown The New York Yankees pulled out all the stops tonight, winning the World Series in a hard-fought series with the St. Louis Cardinals. It was a seesaw affair but, with a 8-1 victory at Yankee Stadium, New York lay claim to the franchise's 7th championship. "There's no denying we faced a tough opponent," said Norm Siebern. "But as the old saying goes, 'when the going gets tough, the tough get going,' and that's what we did today." The champs finished the regular season 109-53 and claimed first place in the AL. A victory parade is set to be scheduled in New York in the days to come. Yankees win series 4-3 World Series MVP: 1B Norm Siebern (New York Yankees) |
