JULY 16
Heroes Land Perez, Deal Fuentes to IdolsWednesday, July 15th, 2015: Done deal! The Los Angeles Idols have agreed to send 25-year-old third baseman Tony Perez to the New York Heroes for 32-year-old reliever Brian Fuentes and $735,000 in cash. The trade, rumored for days, was completed in the wee hours this morning. Perez is presently hitting at a .326 pace with 5 home runs, 31 RBIs and has scored 18 times. So far this season, Fuentes has a 3-1 won-lost record with no saves. He has made 21 relief appearances, logged 39.1 innings and fanned 35 batters while fashioning a 1.83 ERA and allowing the opposition a .221 batting average. The trade of Perez eliminates yet another part-time first baseman from the Idols' perennial logjam at the position. The shift of Luke Easter to shortstop has worked astonishingly well, and now it seems young Eddie Murray will finally get a chance at first base. Perez fills the void left when David Wright left New York for Charlotte at the end of last season.
Bad News for Indianapolis, Pedro Guerrero HurtSunday, July 19th, 2015: The Engines received bad news this morning. Pedro Guerrero will miss 4 weeks due to shoulder tendinitis. In the Indianapolis-Chicago game he sustained the injury while throwing the ball. "I'm disappointed more than anything," he told reporters later in the day. "You can't help your team on the bench," Guerrero sighed. "I'll do the rehab work and hope for a quick recovery." For the season Guerrero is batting .286 with 95 hits and 12 home runs. He has scored 41 times and batted in 48. NORTHERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Thompson Picked NL Player of the WeekMonday, July 20th, 2015: There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Jason Thompson, the Philadelphia first baseman, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the Northern League Player of the Week honors. Thompson piled up 7 hits in 9 at-bats, no home runs and 1 RBIs while hitting .778. Presently Thompson is batting .309 and has collected 12 home runs, 38 RBIs, .387 OBP and scored 45 runs. SOUTHERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Speaker Picked SL Best PlayerMonday, July 20th, 2015: 21-year-old Tris Speaker sent shock waves through Pastime Baseball League last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the Southern League Player of the Week Award. Speaker hit .429 with 9 hits in 21 at-bats, no home runs and 6 RBI. Speaker is hitting .355 this season with 2 home runs, 36 RBIs and 44 runs scored. He has 107 hits in 301 at-bats. |

I missed a lot due to computer issues. But I see Eddie Murray is still not an impact player. Is he even in the league?

Funny you check in now. The post before yours notes that Murray is set to get some playing time now. Fred Tenney left, Luke Easter was converted to shortstop and they traded Tank Carr last offseason. They moved Tony Perez to third base, and now traded him, too. Of course, they signed Dan Brouthers as a free agent, who has been playing first and remained a roadblock. But now they are going to DH Brouthers against lefties and let Murray play first against lefties, so he's at least with the big club now. We'll see what he does with the chance. He's only 25, so he could still become something.

JULY 20
Beckley Belts 5 HitsMonday, July 20th, 2015: 5 hits in a game doesn't happen every day. New Orleans's Jake Beckley had a very special day against the Tides when everything came together for him and he did just that -- collected 5 hits in 6 at-bats -- and led the New Orleans Knights to a 15-4 win at Tides Ballpark. "I'm just out there to try and help the team win," Beckley said after the game, "I had some real good at-bats today. I made good, solid contact and luckily no one caught 'em." J. Beckley struck out in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off B. Voiselle in the 5th, singled in the 6th, hit a three-run home run off L. Dierker in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th. So far this year Beckley is batting .324 with 14 home runs, 77 RBIs and 65 runs scored. Alabama's Brett Breaks HandMonday, July 20th, 2015: It took the Alabama team doctor a while to realize it, but third baseman George Brett won't simply play through a fractured hand after he got hurt being hit by a pitch in today's Sandmen-Airmen game. At first, it looked like Brett might be back as early as tomorrow, but now the prognosis isn't quite so good; he's expected to miss at least 6 weeks. So far this year in 53 games Brett is hitting .318 with 3 home runs, 27 RBIs and 25 runs scored.
Vaughn Mystifies MemphisFriday, July 24th, 2015: The Memphis Strummers had no answer today for Knights pitcher Hippo Vaughn. They failed to score a single run against him, losing 1-0. Memphis managed only 6 hits off Vaughn and suffered 4 strikeouts. This year Vaughn has compiled a 2-4 record with a 5.48 ERA. John Takes Charge, Blanks PhiladelphiaSaturday, July 25th, 2015: Tommy John of the Boston Riders blanked Philadelphia 9-0 on a 1-hit complete-game shutout, striking out 3 batters and walking 4. This year John has 8 wins and 6 losses and a 3.38 ERA. Sorensen Befuddles St. LouisSaturday, July 25th, 2015: In an outstanding mound performance Lary Sorensen fired a complete-game shutout against the Tides. He tossed a 5-hitter for Alabama to beat St. Louis 3-0 at Tides Ballpark. On the season Sorensen has a 7-7 record with a 3.52 ERA. Orlando Deals Johnson to NY For LavelleSunday, July 26th, 2015: The Orcas and Heroes confirmed this afternoon that a trade had been agreed upon. In the deal, Orlando will get 26-year-old reliever Gary Lavelle, while New York will receive 26-year-old third baseman Judy Johnson. So far this season Johnson is batting .229 with 7 home runs, 38 RBIs and 31 runs scored. He has 55 hits in 240 at-bats, 16 walks and a .271 OBP. Johnson has played in 84 games. Hands Razor-Sharp, Shuts out CharlotteSunday, July 26th, 2015: He didn't put a spell on them. It wasn't black magic, it was just old-fashioned good pitching. That's how Bill Hands of the Louisville Racers blanked the Charlotte Cougars 1-0. After tossing a complete-game 4-hit shutout, he was all smiles, saying, "I threw a lot of my pitches for strikes in this game. I mixed it up and tried keeping these guys off balance." His own skipper said, "He's at his best when he gets ahead of the hitters." Hands walked 1 and struck out 2 in the victory. The Cougars manager commented on their lack of success against him, saying, "He was throwing his breaking ball for strikes and we never capitalized on any of his mistakes." Season-to-date Hands has rung up 6 wins and 10 losses in 19 appearances. He has an ERA of 5.27 and has fanned 48 batters in 124.2 innings. Shorty Fuller Out 7-8 MonthsSunday, July 26th, 2015: The Sandmen will be minus Shorty Fuller for about 7-8 months after the shortstop suffered a torn labrum while colliding with a player at a base in a recent game against San Antonio. Fuller and the Arizona skipper were hoping further examination might show there was less damage than originally thought and he would be absent a shorter duration. This year Fuller is batting .248 with 36 hits, 1 home run, 18 RBIs, 13 walks, .302 OBP and has scored 15 runs. NORTHERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Connor NL's Best of the WeekMonday, July 27th, 2015: His hard work and hustle paid off this week. The hard-working and hard-playing Roger Connor was rewarded with the Northern League Player of the Week honors. The scrappy Chicago Hitmen first baseman hit .458 while collecting 11 hits in 24 at-bats, 3 home runs and 9 RBIs. So far this season, Connor has recorded a .282 batting average with 105 hits, 11 home runs, 59 RBIs, 53 runs scored and a .372 OBP. SOUTHERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Beckley Wins SL HonorMonday, July 27th, 2015: Jake Beckley is respected by most New Orleans Knights fans for his no-frills style of play. The 26-year-old first baseman went about his business with vigor last week to grab the Southern League Player of the Week honors. He compiled a .528 average (19-36) with 4 home runs, 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored. In 98 games this season Beckley is batting .333 with 135 hits and 16 home runs. He has scored 71 runs and driven in 84. |

JULY 27
Brigade SP Schmitz OutMonday, July 27th, 2015: The Wichita Brigade were dealt a severe blow when Johnny Schmitz was hurt throwing a pitch recently in a game against the New York Heroes. After the game, the team trainer reported SchmitzSchmitz at least 7 months to heal. This season Schmitz has a 6-8 record with a 4.16 ERA. Hawley Re-Signs with HitmenTuesday, July 28th, 2015: The latest news from the BNN reporters following the Chicago Hitmen is that an agreement has been reached with Pink Hawley to continue as their reliever for another 3 years. This season Hawley has made 18 relief appearances with 2 saves. In 36 innings he has fanned 24 hitters and recorded 2 wins and 5 losses with a 5.75 ERA. Charlotte, Las Vegas Trade MadeTuesday, July 28th, 2015: There were plenty of hugs and handshakes passed out as 26-year-old catcher John Beckwith left the Charlotte Cougars today en route to joining the Las Vegas Bosses organization. 31-year-old starting pitcher Jouett Meekin will be traveling to Charlotte Cougars to complete the swap. So far on the season Beckwith is hitting .231 with 2 home runs, 18 RBIs and 16 runs scored. He has 28 hits and played in 51 games. Beckwith's star has fallen astonishingly since his 2012 campaign, in which he was named Northern League Outstanding Hitter, batting .303 with 30 homers and 122 RBI. Meekin has fashioned a 5-6 mark for the season, 4.71 ERA and thrown 86 innings in 12 starts. Opposing clubs are batting .296 against him. Lincecum Pitches Gem against Los AngelesTuesday, July 28th, 2015: Tim Lincecum of the Memphis Strummers not only shut out Los Angeles 10-0, he made it look effortless. Lincecum This season-to-date Lincecum has 7 wins and 9 losses and a 3.47 ERA.
Strummers Lose Willie StargellWednesday, July 29th, 2015: The Memphis Strummers will have to make do without Willie Stargell for 2 weeks. He suffered shoulder tendinitis while making a defensive play in the game today against the Los Angeles Idols. His teammates, understandably, were upset about losing the left fielder. "That's a tough break for him," one of them said. "But this team is resilient. We will just fill in until he gets back." Currently Stargell is batting .275 with 15 home runs, 78 RBIs and 54 runs scored. Trent Sizzles, Orlando FizzlesWednesday, July 29th, 2015: Everything clicked on the hill today for Ted Trent of the San Antonio Sheriffs as he hurled his club to a 8-0 shutout win over the Orlando Orcas, limiting them to 5 hits while recording 3 strikeouts and yielding 2 walks. He overpowered some batters with his fastball and buckled knees with his sharp breaking pitches. "We had our shot at him a couple of different times," the Orcas manager said, "but we weren't able to get to him." Trent has gone 13-3 this season with an ERA of 1.66 and 146 strikeouts in 163 innings pitched. Other clubs are hitting .176 against him. In Shocker, Engines Deal PippThursday, July 30th, 2015: The Indianapolis Engines have made a deal sending 28-year-old first baseman Wally Pipp to the Wichita Brigade for 29-year-old starting pitcher Ted Breitenstein. Both sides are said to be pleased with the way the trade worked out. Pipp on the season is batting .242 with 21 home runs. His totals include 54 RBIs and 58 runs scored. He has played in 75 games. To this point in the season, Breitenstein shows a 8-9 record, 21 starts, 172 innings, 83 strikeouts and a 4.34 ERA. Los Angeles Trades Parrish to Oklahoma City for TesreauThursday, July 30th, 2015: Signed... Sealed... and Delivered. Los Angeles has worked out terms of a deal to send 25-year-old catcher Lance Parrish to Oklahoma City for 28-year-old reliever Jeff Tesreau. Both teams expect to introduce their new players at press conferences later in the week. For the year Parrish is batting .333 with 52 hits and 3 home runs. He has scored 21 times and driven in 23. Cal McVey will take over the full-time catching duties. To this point in the season, Tesreau has rung up 3 saves in 18 relief appearances. He has also crafted a 4.54 ERA, 1 win and 2 losses and 16 strikeouts in 33.2 innings. Arizona, Philadelphia Swap Players Thursday, July 30th, 2015: You can focus on the negatives after being traded to a new team -- finding a new place to stay, leaving teammates and friends, having to start anew -- but one player hopes to focus on the positives. "It means I'm wanted somewhere. At least one team sees potential in me." Those were the comments heard after the Arizona Sandmen came to an agreement to deal 25-year-old shortstop Davey Johnson to the Philadelphia Ringers for 25-year-old reliever Bill Campbell.
Charlotte Whitewashes Chicago, Sutcliffe WinnerFriday, July 31st, 2015: The Hitmen tried, but could not solve Charlotte's Rick Sutcliffe, falling to the Cougars 5-0. Chicago managed only 5 hits off Sutcliffe, who kept opposing hitters guessing all day. In a strong route-going performance he had 2 strikeouts and walked 2. In pitching stats this season Sutcliffe has rung up 11 wins and 4 losses in 18 games. He has an ERA of 3.17 and has fanned 76 batters in 142 innings.
Sanders Bewilders CougarsSaturday, August 1st, 2015: Ben Sanders had an impressive outing today. He hurled the Chicago Hitmen to a 7-0 shutout victory over the Charlotte Cougars, yielding 4 hits with 5 strikeouts and no walks. "He threw strikes and he was always around the plate," the Charlotte skipper said. "The ball was doing everything he wanted it to do. We hit some balls hard, but they were all right at the fielders." This year Sanders has a 10-11 record with a 3.43 ERA in 22 starts.
Wichita's Jones Down with InjurySunday, August 2nd, 2015: Team doctors diagnosed Cleon Jones with chronic back soreness and told the Wichita Brigade center fielder that he will miss 2-3 weeks. Jones was hurt making a defensive play in a game against the Boston Riders. In his season totals Jones has 7 home runs and a .293 batting average. Injury Takes Toll, Dwayne Murphy OutSunday, August 2nd, 2015: New Orleans learned today that they will be without center fielder Dwayne Murphy for 4 weeks. Murphy was injured colliding with a player at a base and sustained a fractured foot. He was hurt in the game against the Las Vegas Bosses. So far this year Murphy is batting .306 with 17 home runs. NORTHERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SOUTHERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK SL's Best Player NamedMonday, August 3rd, 2015: There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Fred Carroll, the New Orleans catcher, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the Southern League Player of the Week honors. Carroll piled up 6 hits in 12 at-bats, 3 home runs and 4 RBIs while hitting .500. Carroll has collected 85 hits for the Knights this year, 7 of them home runs. He has also netted 42 RBIs and scored 48 runs while batting .250. |

![]() JULY AWARDS ![]() NL Batter of the Month: Babe Ruth, ChicagoSaturday, August 1st, 2015: When Babe Ruth stepped up to the plate in July, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the Northern League Batter of the Month award. The young Chicago right fielder posted a .298 batting average with 5 home runs, 19 RBIs and scored 19 runs. Ruth also worked pitchers for 14 walks to post a .387 on-base percentage. Ruth is batting .291 with 22 home runs and 74 RBIs this season. NL Pitcher of the Month: Rick Sutcliffe, CharlotteSaturday, August 1st, 2015: Rick Sutcliffe took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the Northern League Pitcher of the Month award for July. The 24-year-old Cougars starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 5-0 won-lost record in 5 starts. This month he fanned 22 batters in 42.1 innings and compiled a 1.49 ERA. This year Sutcliffe has 11 wins and 4 losses and a 3.17 ERA. NL Rookie of the Month: Keith Hernandez, BostonSaturday, August 1st, 2015: Keith Hernandez earned July's Rookie of the Month honors in the Northern League for last month's performance. APOLOGIES: I set this aside to post separate from the other news, then forgot about it! ![]() Arizona's LaCoss Throws PBL's First Perfecto! It was a perfect game. "I didn't really think about it until the seventh inning," LaCoss confessed in a postgame interveiw, "then all at once it hit me. From that point on, the pressure's on. You're conscious of every pitch, every call, every out and just try to relax, which is almost impossible. I just tried to relax and throw the ball as naturally as I could without thinking a lot. I didn't want to aim the ball. That's when you get in trouble and lose control." LaCoss was traded by the New Orleans Knights to Arizona on June 26 for outfielder Gabe Gross. He's gone 2-2 with a 2.08 ERA for the Sandmen since the trade, trying to keep the Sandmen in front of the division after the loss of ace Dutch Leonard for the season. To date this season, LaCoss has registered 19 starts, 9-8 won-lost mark, 3.77 ERA, 148 IP, 57 strikeouts and 44 walks. Opposing teams have hit .248 against him. The performance was the fourth no-hitter in PBL history. Dick Rudolph (for San Antonio vs. Oklahoma City on May 17, 2013), Bob Shawkey (for Sacramento vs. Chicago on Sept. 19, 2013), and Bill Drake (for New York vs. Chicago in the NL Championship Series Oct. 10, 2014) threw the others, meaning there have now been four in three years after none in the league's first four. |

![]() PENNANT RACE EDITION What looked for most of the year to be presenting four tight races in the PBL has devolved into two, as the Southern League seems pretty much decided. The report format shifts to day-to-day for the pennant race, so let's set the stage here.
They were 23-27 on June 1st, but the Louisville Racers have ridden an 18-9 surge in June to hold onto the division lead since then in the mediocre Northern League East. They've done this despite the loss of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson to a broken elbow back on June 21. A potentially key development: Roy Oswalt, who anchored this staff for five years before ineffectiveness landed him in the bullpen last season and all of this year, has been reinstated in the rotation as Louisville seeks to become the first team other than New York to win this division in the PBL's 7-year history. The Charlotte Cougars went 12-15 in August, but ended by winning three of four to close out the month and they hope that John Candelaria (14-8, 3.08) and Rick Sutcliffe (13-7, 3.44) can carry them through this final month. David Wright has woken up a bit, but there is no fearsome offensive presence (Paul Hines leads in average at .273, Adrian Gonzalez in homers with 19) here, so pitching needs to carry them. The expansion Boston Riders have ridden Adam Dunn's 34 homers and baseball's number one pitching staff, led by Jim Palmer (12-7, 2.84) to contention. But someone other than Dunn and rookie Keith Hernandez (.281-10-50) needs to produce offensively to hand leads to the game's best bullpen. When after six straight division titles, three pennants but no PBL Championship Series titles New York Heroes management used the PBL's first free agency season to purge the roster of its entrenched stars, many thought they were crazy. But Heroes management knew their team profited from a mediocre division and that was unlikely to change in one year. And so the Heroes, despite being only a game over .500 and playing 11-17 ball in August, find themselves within striking distance as we head down the stretch. SEPTEMBER SCHEDULES Louisville: 2 @ BOS, 4 @ IND, 3 @ CHI, 3 vs WIC, 2 @ SAC, 4 @ NY, 3 @ CHA, 3 vs MIL, 3 vs BOS, 4 @ PHI Charlotte: 2 vs CHI, 4 @ PHI, 3 vs WIC, 4 @ SAC, 2 @ MIL, 4 @ BOS, 3 vs LOU, 4 vs PHI, 3 vs IND, 4 @ NY Boston: 2 vs LOU, 4 @ NY, 3 vs SAC, 3 vs MIL, 2 @ IND, 4 vs CHA, 3 vs PHI, 4 vs NY, 3 @ LOU, 4 @ CHI New York: 2 vs PHI, 4 vs BOS, 4 vs IND, 3 vs CHI, 2 @ WIC, 4 vs LOU, 3 vs SAC, 4 @ BOS, 3 @ PHI, 4 vs CHA |

![]() PENNANT RACE EDITION (cont.)
An 18-10 August has put the Sacramento Stingers in position to win the division. The 2013 champs, who had the bottom fall out last year, have pitched brilliantly, owning a pair of 17-game winners so far in Bob Veale and Rube Marquard. Rightfielder Socks Seybold already has a career high 22 homers and 72 RBI, and rookie Jack Clark (.256-11-51) have been strong. The Wichita Brigade have scored the most runs in the Northern League despite the fewest homers. They lead in walks, OBP and steals, but the precipitous decline of Jay Gibbons (.244-16-71), who last year became the PBL's first 150-RBI man. With 16, he's the only Brigade player in double digits. They have the NL batting leader (George Stone, .346) and possible Outstanding Rookie (Ken Griffey, .312-9-47). Iconic pitcher Rube Waddell has struggled (7-8, 5.22) as head of the league's worst rotation (4.71). ![]() Sept. 1, 2015 Louisville 5, Boston 2: The Racers got three hits, including a first-inning homer from Jim Lefebvre (12) and two hits plus 2 RBI from Jerry Mumphrey in jumping out to a 4-0 lead against Boston's Chief Bender (8-17, 4.21). Edinson Volquez (13-9, 4.80) was strong over 8 2/3, while Brad Lidge notched his 4th save for Louisville. Charlotte 6, Chicago 1: Ralph Branca (9-13, 4.76) allowed only an unearned run in going the distance for Charlotte, which got a 2-run homer from Jason Bay (11) in the 6th and a 2-run double from David Wright, who went 4-for-4, in the 7th. Denny LeMaster (7-6, 3.47) took the loss for Chicago. New York 6, Philadelphia 5 (10 innings): Buddy Kerr hit a bases loaded single off Al Holland to score Cory Sullivan with the winning run, as New York pulled out the victory. Fielder Jones and Joe Morgan each had two hits, and Mike Jacobs hit his 21st homer for the Heroes. Andre Dawson (8) and George Burns (11) homered for the Ringers in the loss.
Indianapolis 4, Sacramento 0: Ted Breitenstein (10-13, 4.56) threw a complete game shutout and Hanley Ramirez homered and drove in three as the Engines topped Bob Veale (17-7, 2.76). Wichita 10, Milwaukee 8: The Brigade banged out 15 hits in rallying back from a 6-2 deficit, breaking a 6-6 tie with a 4-run sixth led by a two-run shot from Jay Gibbons (17). Frank Chance and George Stone each had two hits and scored twice, with Chance driving in 3 to give him 93 RBI for the season. In what could be a divisive decision, though, Wichita has pulled Rube Waddell and his 5.22 ERA from the rotation. Though unhappy with the decision, Waddell notched a four-out save in the victory.
