Memphis locks up Carr For Two Years
Tuesday, July 14th, 2015: Memphis fans celebrated as word of a signing became reality. Tank Carr won't be pulling up stakes anytime soon, as he has signed a 2-year extension at a pay rate of $2,255,000 per annum.

Carr was acquired for Shawn Chacon on July 4, and Memphis was quick to start negotiations to keep him around.

This year Carr is batting .280 with 14 home runs and 40 RBIs.

Heroes Land Perez, Deal Fuentes to Idols
Wednesday, July 15th, 2015: Done deal! The Los Angeles Idols have agreed to send 25-year-old third baseman Tony Perez to the New York Heroes for 32-year-old reliever Brian Fuentes and $735,000 in cash. The trade, rumored for days, was completed in the wee hours this morning.

Perez is presently hitting at a .326 pace with 5 home runs, 31 RBIs and has scored 18 times.

So far this season, Fuentes has a 3-1 won-lost record with no saves. He has made 21 relief appearances, logged 39.1 innings and fanned 35 batters while fashioning a 1.83 ERA and allowing the opposition a .221 batting average.

The trade of Perez eliminates yet another part-time first baseman from the Idols' perennial logjam at the position. The shift of Luke Easter to shortstop has worked astonishingly well, and now it seems young Eddie Murray will finally get a chance at first base.

Perez fills the void left when David Wright left New York for Charlotte at the end of last season.

Injury Forces Willie Wells Out
Thursday, July 16th, 2015: Arizona suffered another blow to a star, as shortstop Willie Wells
has a fractured hand, suffered while being hit by a pitch. He's expected to be out at least a month.

Wells, an All-Star this season, is batting .257 with 6 home runs.

The injury follows the devastating loss of ace Dutch Leonard, who won 13 games in the first half with a 1.38 ERA before going down for the season. The division-leading Sandmen are hoping Clark Griffith (2-1, 2.79) can return to 2012 form, when he went 13-4 with a 2.40 ERA before an injury cut short his season. He was terrible in 2013 and has found his slot as a reliever since then. But now he needs to cover for baseball's best pitcher the rest of the way.

Bad News for Indianapolis, Pedro Guerrero Hurt
Sunday, July 19th, 2015: The Engines received bad news this morning. Pedro Guerrero will miss 4 weeks due to shoulder tendinitis. In the Indianapolis-Chicago game he sustained the injury while throwing the ball. "I'm disappointed more than anything," he told reporters later in the day. "You can't help your team on the bench," Guerrero sighed. "I'll do the rehab work and hope for a quick recovery."

For the season Guerrero is batting .286 with 95 hits and 12 home runs. He has scored 41 times and batted in 48.

NORTHERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Thompson Picked NL Player of the Week
Monday, July 20th, 2015: There's nothing like being in the prime of your baseball career -- and playing like it. Just ask Jason Thompson, the Philadelphia first baseman, who swung a sweet bat all week to not only aid his team, but also pick up the Northern League Player of the Week honors.

Thompson piled up 7 hits in 9 at-bats, no home runs and 1 RBIs while hitting .778.

Presently Thompson is batting .309 and has collected 12 home runs, 38 RBIs, .387 OBP and scored 45 runs.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Speaker Picked SL Best Player
Monday, July 20th, 2015: 21-year-old Tris Speaker sent shock waves through Pastime Baseball League last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the Southern League Player of the Week Award.

Speaker hit .429 with 9 hits in 21 at-bats, no home runs and 6 RBI.

Speaker is hitting .355 this season with 2 home runs, 36 RBIs and 44 runs scored. He has 107 hits in 301 at-bats.

I missed a lot due to computer issues. But I see Eddie Murray is still not an impact player. Is he even in the league?

Funny you check in now. The post before yours notes that Murray is set to get some playing time now. Fred Tenney left, Luke Easter was converted to shortstop and they traded Tank Carr last offseason. They moved Tony Perez to third base, and now traded him, too. Of course, they signed Dan Brouthers as a free agent, who has been playing first and remained a roadblock. But now they are going to DH Brouthers against lefties and let Murray play first against lefties, so he's at least with the big club now. We'll see what he does with the chance. He's only 25, so he could still become something.

Beckley Belts 5 Hits
Monday, July 20th, 2015: 5 hits in a game doesn't happen every day. New Orleans's Jake Beckley had a very special day against the Tides when everything came together for him and he did just that -- collected 5 hits in 6 at-bats -- and led the New Orleans Knights to a 15-4 win at Tides Ballpark.

"I'm just out there to try and help the team win," Beckley said after the game, "I had some real good at-bats today. I made good, solid contact and luckily no one caught 'em."

J. Beckley struck out in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off B. Voiselle in the 5th, singled in the 6th, hit a three-run home run off L. Dierker in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th.

So far this year Beckley is batting .324 with 14 home runs, 77 RBIs and 65 runs scored.

Alabama's Brett Breaks Hand
Monday, July 20th, 2015: It took the Alabama team doctor a while to realize it, but third baseman George Brett won't simply play through a fractured hand after he got hurt being hit by a pitch in today's Sandmen-Airmen game. At first, it looked like Brett might be back as early as tomorrow, but now the prognosis isn't quite so good; he's expected to miss at least 6 weeks.

So far this year in 53 games Brett is hitting .318 with 3 home runs, 27 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

Easterly Gets 5 Hits
Wednesday, July 22nd, 2015: Ted Easterly was on quite a roll today as he knocked the ball all over the park, collecting 5 hits and leading the Orcas to a 9-7 victory over the Memphis Strummers.

After the first three hits, all eyes in the ballpark were drawn to him each time he stepped into the batter's box. Even a few of the opposing fans were pulling for him, knowing they were watching a little baseball-hitting history unfold.

In the clubhouse, crowded by reporters, the Orlando catcher said, "I never realized that batting a little ball around could cause so much commotion." When asked what the secret of hitting so well is, he smiled and replied, "The key to hitting for a high average is to relax, concentrate and hit the ball where they ain't."

Nobody was at home today as Easterly finished the day with 5 hits in 5 at-bats and a line in the record book.

Easterly singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 8th.

Vaughn Mystifies Memphis
Friday, July 24th, 2015: The Memphis Strummers had no answer today for Knights pitcher Hippo Vaughn. They failed to score a single run against him, losing 1-0. Memphis managed only 6 hits off Vaughn and suffered 4 strikeouts.

This year Vaughn has compiled a 2-4 record with a 5.48 ERA
.

John Takes Charge, Blanks Philadelphia
Saturday, July 25th, 2015: Tommy John of the Boston Riders blanked Philadelphia 9-0 on a 1-hit complete-game shutout, striking out 3 batters and walking 4.

This year John has 8 wins and 6 losses and a 3.38 ERA.

Sorensen Befuddles St. Louis
Saturday, July 25th, 2015: In an outstanding mound performance Lary Sorensen fired a complete-game shutout against the Tides. He tossed a 5-hitter for Alabama to beat St. Louis 3-0 at Tides Ballpark.

On the season Sorensen has a 7-7 record with a 3.52 ERA.

Orlando Deals Johnson to NY For Lavelle
Sunday, July 26th, 2015: The Orcas and Heroes confirmed this afternoon that a trade had been agreed upon. In the deal, Orlando will get 26-year-old reliever Gary Lavelle, while New York will receive 26-year-old third baseman Judy Johnson.

So far this season Johnson is batting .229 with 7 home runs, 38 RBIs and 31 runs scored. He has 55 hits in 240 at-bats, 16 walks and a .271 OBP. Johnson has played in 84 games.

Hands Razor-Sharp, Shuts out Charlotte
Sunday, July 26th, 2015: He didn't put a spell on them. It wasn't black magic, it was just old-fashioned good pitching. That's how Bill Hands of the Louisville Racers blanked the Charlotte Cougars 1-0.

After tossing a complete-game 4-hit shutout, he was all smiles, saying, "I threw a lot of my pitches for strikes in this game. I mixed it up and tried keeping these guys off balance."

His own skipper said, "He's at his best when he gets ahead of the hitters." Hands walked 1 and struck out 2 in the victory.

The Cougars manager commented on their lack of success against him, saying, "He was throwing his breaking ball for strikes and we never capitalized on any of his mistakes."

Season-to-date Hands has rung up 6 wins and 10 losses in 19 appearances. He has an ERA of 5.27 and has fanned 48 batters in 124.2 innings.

Shorty Fuller Out 7-8 Months
Sunday, July 26th, 2015: The Sandmen will be minus Shorty Fuller for about 7-8 months after the shortstop suffered a torn labrum while colliding with a player at a base in a recent game against San Antonio. Fuller and the Arizona skipper were hoping further examination might show there was less damage than originally thought and he would be absent a shorter duration.

This year Fuller is batting .248 with 36 hits, 1 home run, 18 RBIs, 13 walks, .302 OBP and has scored 15 runs.

NORTHERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Connor NL's Best of the Week
Monday, July 27th, 2015: His hard work and hustle paid off this week. The hard-working and hard-playing Roger Connor was rewarded with the Northern League Player of the Week honors.

The scrappy Chicago Hitmen first baseman hit .458 while collecting 11 hits in 24 at-bats, 3 home runs and 9 RBIs.

So far this season, Connor has recorded a .282 batting average with 105 hits, 11 home runs, 59 RBIs, 53 runs scored and a .372 OBP.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Saturday, August 1st, 2015: Rick Sutcliffe took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the Northern League Pitcher of the Month award for July.

Ty Cobb Sidelined for 2 Weeks
Monday, August 3rd, 2015: Baseball can be a contact sport at times. It can exact a harsh toll on a player's body. In a recent game against New Orleans Knights, Idols center fielder Ty Cobb was injured throwing the ball and is expected to miss 2 weeks with an oblique strain. The team did not announce any roster moves today related to this injury. The Los Angeles

Cobb is currently hitting at a .284 pace with 4 home runs, 47 RBIs and has scored 55 times.

Harang Tames Airmen
Wednesday, August 5th, 2015: Orlando starter Aaron Harang really did a number on the Airmen today, shutting them out 5-0 on 4 hits in a complete game victory. He issued 2 walks and had 7 strikeouts.

In his postgame comments, the Alabama manager said, "We didn't have good at-bats. I don't make excuses, but when we were playing the game, our energy didn't show. That comes from either extremely good pitching or extremely lousy hitting... seeing as our team has a bunch of pretty good hitters, I have to tip my cap to Aaron... he did an outstanding job today."

This season Harang has crafted a 13-7 mark with a 2.36 ERA in 175.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .230 against him and he has 129 strikeouts.

Odom Hurls Memphis to Shutout Victory
Wednesday, August 5th, 2015: The St. Louis Tides struggled at the plate today against Strummers hurler Blue Moon Odom, who shackled them on 4 hits while hurling a complete game 6-0 shutout.

"What can you say? We didn't hit well," said the Tides skipper in his postgame comments.

"Hopefully we shake this off and bounce back tomorrow."

Odom finished the game with 3 strikeouts and 4 walks in an excellent mound performance.

"He pitched real well," his manager said. "Blue Moon made pitches when he had to. He hit his spots and did a great job of mixing in his changeup and using his fastball effectively."

On his stats sheet for the year Odom shows a 10-6 record, 18 starts, 137.1 innings, 74 strikeouts and a 3.67 ERA.

Ross Barnes out 2 Weeks With Injury
Wednesday, August 5th, 2015: After the end of today's game between New Orleans and Los Angeles, Ross Barnes skipped the clubhouse and headed straight for the doctor's office. After he was removed from the game as a precaution after colliding with a player at a base, the Knights had their worst fears confirmed when it turned out to be more serious. The second baseman will miss at least 2 weeks with a strained oblique.

Barnes is batting .282 this season in 104 games with 8 home runs, 54 RBIs and 46 runs scored. He has 103 hits in 365 at-bats.

Injury Forces Ken Holtzman Out
Thursday, August 6th, 2015: "It was kinda freaky. Hopefully, I'll be back in the lineup soon," said a dejected Ken Holtzman after injuring himself in a game against Arizona. The Oklahoma City manager told reporters, "He will miss up to 2 weeks with a finger blister." The Scorpions are expected to announce a roster move in the next day or two.

So far this season Holtzman has a 8-12 record with a 4.11 ERA.

Las Vegas Befuddled by Tiant
Thursday, August 6th, 2015: San Antonio was pleased to see so many goose eggs up on the scoreboard today as Luis Tiant blanked Las Vegas

His skipper said, "Once he gets in a groove, he can be dynamite. He was on top of his game in this one."

This season Tiant has compiled a 8-10 record with a 4.64 ERA.

Lemaster Shuts out Milwaukee
Friday, August 7th, 2015: An efficient outing for Denny Lemaster usually means a win for Chicago. Today was no exception, as the 26-year-old starter held Milwaukee to a long line of goose eggs. He struck out 5 and gave up 4 hits in the 5-0 shutout.

This season Lemaster has registered 5 wins and 4 losses in 9 starts with a 3.21 ERA.

Singer Brilliant, Blanks Scorpions
Friday, August 7th, 2015: The San Antonio Sheriffs shut out the Oklahoma City Scorpions behind the 4-hit pitching of Bill Singer, winning by the score of 8-0 at Scorpions Ballpark.

So far this season Singer has 11 wins and 12 losses and a 4.40 ERA.

Dave Parker Hurt, Out 3-4 Weeks
Saturday, August 8th, 2015: A blow for Dave Parker today -- team doctors confirmed he will miss 3-4 weeks with a strained hamstring. Parker suffered the injury making a defensive play. Although officials from the Las Vegas Bosses are confident he'll make a full recovery, doubts will persist about Parker's ability to return fully fit with an injury of this nature.

This year Parker is batting .318 with 61 hits and 5 home runs. He has scored 23 times and has batted in 20 runs.

Haas Zeroes in on Chicago
Sunday, August 9th, 2015: The Milwaukee manager told reporters after the game, "When he started out, his command wasn't that good, but he's a tough guy. The more pitches he throws, the better his command is."

He was talking about Moose Haas, who had just hurled a fine 3-hit shutout over the Chicago Hitmen. He had 3 strikeouts and 2 walks in the Milwaukee

"An outstanding job," the Chicago manager said. "We couldn't get anything going. Every time we got a hit, he got out of the jam. He pitched a terrific game."

Arizona's LaCoss Throws PBL's First Perfecto!

Wednesday, July 29th, 2015: At Tides Ballpark the fans marveled as 26-year-old Mike LaCoss of the Arizona Sandmen mowed through the St. Louis lineup without surrendering a hit or a walk in his historic 5-0 victory -- there were no errors either -- he retired all 27 batters, fanning 3 of them.

It was a perfect game.

"I didn't really think about it until the seventh inning," LaCoss confessed in a postgame interveiw, "then all at once it hit me. From that point on, the pressure's on. You're conscious of every pitch, every call, every out and just try to relax, which is almost impossible. I just tried to relax and throw the ball as naturally as I could without thinking a lot. I didn't want to aim the ball. That's when you get in trouble and lose control."

LaCoss was traded by the New Orleans Knights to Arizona on June 26 for outfielder Gabe Gross. He's gone 2-2 with a 2.08 ERA for the Sandmen since the trade, trying to keep the Sandmen in front of the division after the loss of ace Dutch Leonard for the season.

To date this season, LaCoss has registered 19 starts, 9-8 won-lost mark, 3.77 ERA, 148 IP, 57 strikeouts and 44 walks. Opposing teams have hit .248 against him.

The performance was the fourth no-hitter in PBL history. Dick Rudolph (for San Antonio vs. Oklahoma City on May 17, 2013), Bob Shawkey (for Sacramento vs. Chicago on Sept. 19, 2013), and Bill Drake (for New York vs. Chicago in the NL Championship Series Oct. 10, 2014) threw the others, meaning there have now been four in three years after none in the league's first four.

Scorpions' Plank Down with Injury
Monday, August 10th, 2015: Injuries are something every team has to deal with. That fact struck home for the Scorpions when after today's game against the Airmen, the club found out they would be without the services of Eddie Plank for the rest of the season. After the game, his manager said of the incident, "You hate to lose anyone to injury. That's always a negative." Plank was injured earlier today throwing a pitch and suffered a hamstring strain.

Plank has nailed down 10 saves to date. In 22.1 innings he has fanned 8 batters and walked 6. His pitching record is 2 wins and 1 loss with a 1.61 ERA.

Sorensen Tosses Shutout for Alabama
Tuesday, August 11th, 2015: "That was one of my best outings," said Lary Sorensen. "I was worried a lot in the bullpen. My ball wasn't quite right. Luckily, it can be two different worlds -- the bullpen and the game. Once I stepped on the field, it all fell into place."

It was an impressive start for the Airmen hurler. He blanked the Scorpions 3-0 on a strong 3-hitter while ringing up 3 strikeouts and doling out 1 walk.

Sorensen has made 21 starts, tossed 161.2 innings, struck out 47 batters and walked 44. His record is 8-9 with a 3.40 ERA and he has limited other teams to a .274 batting average.

CL Villarreal Extends Stay with Indianapolis

Bad News for Heroes, Soria Injured
Wednesday, August 12th, 2015: New York reliever Joakim Soria is done for the season, diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff. The hard-throwing righty had missed the first four months of the season with a torn tendon in his finger, only returning on July 20. The team hopes Soria, who was signed to a 2-year deal as a free agent last offseason, will be ready for spring training.

This year Soria has registered no saves in 6 relief appearances. He has also compiled a 0-1 won-lost mark with a 3.72 ERA. In 9.2 innings he has fanned 7.

May Records Shutout Against Stingers
Wednesday, August 12th, 2015: "He's got a bunch of different arm angles and his ball was really moving," said the Sacramento manager after watching Rudy May of the Boston Riders humiliate his club 4-0 in a fine 3-hit shutout.

"If I make good pitches, I'm going to get some outs," May said after he befuddled the Stingers. "I was making good pitches the entire game."

He whiffed 4 and walked 4 in the complete game effort.

This season May has a 8-5 record with a 3.22 ERA in 13 starts.

Pineiro Tosses Shutout Against St. Louis

Harry Walker Will Miss 3 Weeks

This year Walker has batted at a .293 pace with 127 hits, 9 home runs, 60 RBIs and scored 56 times.

Carlton Stops New Orleans Cold
Saturday, August 15th, 2015: Steve Carlton dominated New Orleans with a brilliant 5-hit shutout in the Scorpions 2-0 triumph at Bayou Ballpark. The Oklahoma City hurler fanned 2 and walked 0 in the game.

Thus far this season Carlton has posted a 7-12 record, started 23 games, struck out 78 batters in 147 innings and compiled a 5.33 ERA.

Bond Hurls Tides to Shutout Victory
Sunday, August 16th, 2015: A pitcher's main job is to keep the opposition off the scoreboard and St. Louis pitcher Tommy Bond did just that today in a 3-0 victory over the Arizona Sandmen at Tides Ballpark. He gave up no runs in his start, permitted 4 hits and had 6 strikeouts.

This season Bond has compiled a 12-9 record with a 4.05 ERA in 23 starts.

Verlander Befuddles Orlando
Tuesday, August 18th, 2015: After his 1-0 shutout win against the Orcas, Justin Verlander said, "I went out there to try and eat up innings and help out our bullpen. I felt I had my good stuff... and it turned out my command was solid and my breaking balls were good."

They were better than good as the Sandmen pitcher put up 6 strikeouts, surrendered 2 walks, allowed 6 hits and kept the bullpen phone quiet all day long.

Up to now Verlander has compiled an ERA of 3.35 with a 12-10 mark over 25 starts. He has 122 strikeouts in 201.1 innings and has held opponents to a .238 batting average.

Wichita's Doyle Out 3-4 Weeks
Sunday, August 23rd, 2015: "I'm frustrated right now," said Wichita second baseman Larry Doyle. "I can't help this team by sitting on the bench or in the training room." Unfortunately for the Brigade, that's where he will be spending 3-4 weeks. Doyle suffered a sprained ankle in today's game against Boston while throwing the ball. "Believe me," he said, "I won't be out a day longer than I have to be."

A look at his season totals shows Doyle with 1 home run, .342 BA, .389 OBP, 53 RBIs and 45 runs scored.

Gore's Hit Streak Reaches 20 Games
Sunday, August 23rd, 2015: George Gore's bat has been smoking lately as he went 1-for-3 in today's 14-5 triumph over Memphis at Universal Studios Stadium. The 28-year-old left fielder for the Orlando Orcas has now hit safely in 20 consecutive games.

Gore walked in the 2nd, hit an RBI double in the 3rd, walked in the 4th, flied out in the 6th and grounded out in the 7th.

Injury Strikes Dick Allen Again, Ending Season
Sunday, August 23rd, 2015: Dick Allen's injury-riddled career took another hit after a hamstring tear ended his season. Allen pulled up lame in a game against Arizona, putting the Las Vegas slugger out for what seems like the 20th time in his young career.

So far this season Allen is hitting .272 with 9 home runs, 49 RBIs and 36 runs scored. He has 98 hits in 360 at-bats and a .307 OBP.

Taken 7th overall in the 2012 Amateur Draft, Allen missed three weeks in his 2013 rookie season with a back injury, then less than three weeks after returning broke his thumb to sideline him for another month. He suffered an intercostal strain in 2014 that shelved him for three weeks, returned in time to make his first all-star game, but then suffered a hairline fracture in his foot, shelving him for three weeks. In his second game back he tore his MCL, ending his season.

Now, here in his third season and finally seeming to have worked his way back in the last month or so to full strength after the MCL injury, Allen is out once again. He's only 24, and his 162-game average for his career is .276-22-99, with him not even in his prime. The key is just keeping him on the field.

PENNANT RACE EDITION

What looked for most of the year to be presenting four tight races in the PBL has devolved into two, as the Southern League seems pretty much decided. The report format shifts to day-to-day for the pennant race, so let's set the stage here.

Northern League East Standings
EastWLPCTGB
Louisville Racers7160.542-
Charlotte Cougars6663.5124.0
Boston Riders6664.5084.5
New York Heroes6564.5045.0

They were 23-27 on June 1st, but the Louisville Racers have ridden an 18-9 surge in June to hold onto the division lead since then in the mediocre Northern League East. They've done this despite the loss of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson to a broken elbow back on June 21. A potentially key development: Roy Oswalt, who anchored this staff for five years before ineffectiveness landed him in the bullpen last season and all of this year, has been reinstated in the rotation as Louisville seeks to become the first team other than New York to win this division in the PBL's 7-year history.

The Charlotte Cougars went 12-15 in August, but ended by winning three of four to close out the month and they hope that John Candelaria (14-8, 3.08) and Rick Sutcliffe (13-7, 3.44) can carry them through this final month. David Wright has woken up a bit, but there is no fearsome offensive presence (Paul Hines leads in average at .273, Adrian Gonzalez in homers with 19) here, so pitching needs to carry them.

The expansion Boston Riders have ridden Adam Dunn's 34 homers and baseball's number one pitching staff, led by Jim Palmer (12-7, 2.84) to contention. But someone other than Dunn and rookie Keith Hernandez (.281-10-50) needs to produce offensively to hand leads to the game's best bullpen.

When after six straight division titles, three pennants but no PBL Championship Series titles New York Heroes management used the PBL's first free agency season to purge the roster of its entrenched stars, many thought they were crazy. But Heroes management knew their team profited from a mediocre division and that was unlikely to change in one year. And so the Heroes, despite being only a game over .500 and playing 11-17 ball in August, find themselves within striking distance as we head down the stretch.

PENNANT RACE EDITION (cont.)

Sacramento Stingers7556.573-
Wichita Brigade7159.5463.5
An 18-10 August has put the Sacramento Stingers in position to win the division. The 2013 champs, who had the bottom fall out last year, have pitched brilliantly, owning a pair of 17-game winners so far in Bob Veale and Rube Marquard. Rightfielder Socks Seybold already has a career high 22 homers and 72 RBI, and rookie Jack Clark (.256-11-51) have been strong.

The Wichita Brigade have scored the most runs in the Northern League despite the fewest homers. They lead in walks, OBP and steals, but the precipitous decline of Jay Gibbons (.244-16-71), who last year became the PBL's first 150-RBI man. With 16, he's the only Brigade player in double digits. They have the NL batting leader (George Stone, .346) and possible Outstanding Rookie (Ken Griffey, .312-9-47). Iconic pitcher Rube Waddell has struggled (7-8, 5.22) as head of the league's worst rotation (4.71).

Sept. 1, 2015

Louisville 5, Boston 2:
The Racers got three hits, including a first-inning homer from Jim Lefebvre (12) and two hits plus 2 RBI from Jerry Mumphrey in jumping out to a 4-0 lead against Boston's Chief Bender (8-17, 4.21). Edinson Volquez (13-9, 4.80) was strong over 8 2/3, while Brad Lidge notched his 4th save for Louisville.

Charlotte 6, Chicago 1: Ralph Branca (9-13, 4.76) allowed only an unearned run in going the distance for Charlotte, which got a 2-run homer from Jason Bay (11) in the 6th and a 2-run double from David Wright, who went 4-for-4, in the 7th. Denny LeMaster (7-6, 3.47) took the loss for Chicago.

New York 6, Philadelphia 5 (10 innings): Buddy Kerr hit a bases loaded single off Al Holland to score Cory Sullivan with the winning run, as New York pulled out the victory. Fielder Jones and Joe Morgan each had two hits, and Mike Jacobs hit his 21st homer for the Heroes. Andre Dawson (8) and George Burns (11) homered for the Ringers in the loss.

Indianapolis 4, Sacramento 0: Ted Breitenstein (10-13, 4.56) threw a complete game shutout and Hanley Ramirez homered and drove in three as the Engines topped Bob Veale (17-7, 2.76).

Wichita 10, Milwaukee 8: The Brigade banged out 15 hits in rallying back from a 6-2 deficit, breaking a 6-6 tie with a 4-run sixth led by a two-run shot from Jay Gibbons (17). Frank Chance and George Stone each had two hits and scored twice, with Chance driving in 3 to give him 93 RBI for the season. In what could be a divisive decision, though, Wichita has pulled Rube Waddell and his 5.22 ERA from the rotation. Though unhappy with the decision, Waddell notched a four-out save in the victory.
