7th April 1882

The Boston Americans go into their first season with a great deal of trepidation as they have not yet tested themselves as a team. The Independent League Assessors have reviewed the new team and cannot see them breaking into the top 4 above any of the existing teams. They see them finishing in 6th place with a record below .500.

The MLB has decided to keep a schedule of 84 games but has changed the league running time so that it now currently only runs from April to mid July before the play offs. This change in structure for the schedule will put a lot of pressure on the pitchers as the league still specifies only 2 starters can be selected. This also means the All Star Game is going to be played at the end of May.

The new GM and Manager have put their new squad through its first spring training sessions together. This has given them a chance to build a view of the team and has allowed them to select the following 25 players as their first opening day roster.

The fans of the Red Caps are hoping their team can manage a better campaign than they have recently. With the addition of the new teams they certainly hope so. The Independent League Assessors feel that the team will be able to maintain its position as one of the top 4 teams but more than this they feel that they will be able to push forward and possibly have a run at the pennant.

The fans of the Atlantics are hoping that with the addition of the new teams to the league they will be able to have a better season than they have done over the last few years. The Independent League Assessors feel that this will be the case as they have predicted that the Atlantics will manage to finish in third place and not slip out of the top 4.

The new White Sox team have had a tough off season as they have only picked up 1 pitcher. This will make the start to their season rough as they look for further pitchers. The fans of the Red Stockings are hoping that their team can push on from the last couple of seasons and win the NL pennant. The independent league assessors don't feel that the team has the ability to do this. They in fact see the team falling below at least one of the new teams to finish 5th in the NL table.

After three seasons, where they have just missed out on the MLB Championship, the fans are hoping the team can take that final step and win the MLB title they crave. The Independent League Assessors have said that they feel the team has finally reached it pinnacle and is on its way back down. They see the team finishing in 4th place in the AL table but still above the 4 new teams.

The Detroit Wolverines are hoping to put together as strong a season as they possibly can so that they can break into the top 4. The independent league assessor agree they will be the best of the new AL teams but do not see them being able to break into the top 4. They see them as finishing 5th and just breaking the .500 mark.

The Quakers are looking to for as good a season as they can this year. The haven't got the pitching set yet as they don't have cover but they will more than likely gain players on the waivers. The independent league assessors are worried about this lack of pitching and have included this in their assessment of the team finish last in the NL table.

The Baltimore Orioles had a tough start to the season as they managed to pick up only 9 wins from the 21 games played. This has left them in joint 7th place in the AL table, 5 games behind the leaders. What has worried the fans more is that they are below 3 of the expansion teams.

The team started the with a winning series at home to the Detroit Wolverines 2-1. The month then went down hill as they lost a road trip to the Cleveland Blues 1-2 and a road trip to the Washington Nationals 0-3. Their form then picked up as they won a road trip to the Philadelphia Athletics 3-0 but then disappeared again as they lost a home series 1-2 against the Boston Americans and 1-2 at home to the Louisville Eclipse. They finished the month with a 1-2 home series loss to the Chicago White Sox.

The batting had a tough month with none of the regular starters getting an average above .300. The best of these starters was Right Fielder Jake Evans. Evans started all 21 games and picked up 21 hits from 74 at bats. He scored 11 runs and 8 RBI's for an average of .284.

The pitching also had a struggle during the month. Starter Jack Lynch was the best of the group. Lynch started 10 games and picked up 6 wins from 86 innings pitched. He gave up 79 hits and 21 earned runs for an ERA of 2.20

The team stayed away from the waiver wire and didn't change much to the squad.

The only change made was when Centre Fielder Ren Wylie went down with back soreness towards the end of the month. He will miss 2 weeks of the season.

The team will be facing 24 games during the month of May. We will bring you all the news from these games and also news of the All Star teams and game.

The Boston Americans had a very tough introduction to the MLB as they fought hard for only 9 wins from the 21 games played in April. This has left them joint 7th in the AL table, 5 games behind the leading Detroit Wolverines.

The team started well with a 2-1 home series win against the Cleveland Blues. They followed this up with a dip in form as they lost the home series to the Philadelphia Athletics 1-2. Their first road trip in the MLB bought them a solid 2-1 win against the Chicago White Sox before falling apart on the road to the Washington Nationals 0-3. They did manage to pick the pieces up again as they beat the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 on the road. They finished the month with 2 tough home series losses to the Detroit Wolverines and Louisville Eclipse 1-2 both times.

The star performances came from the batting side of the team. The best starter was First Baseman Fred Mann. Mann started 21 games and picked up 27 hits from 81 at bats. He scored 15 runs and 18 RBI's for an average of .303. These figures meant the voters of the AL were happy to award him the Batter of the Month award.

The pitching didn't have quite the same success. The best pitcher was Bill Sweeney. Sweeney pitched 95 innings in 12 games, 11 as a starter, for 6 wins. He gave up 108 hits and 21 earned runs for an ERA of 1.98

The team lost 2 players on the waiver wire. Right Fielder Val Robinson went to the Philadelphia Quakers and Right Fielder Dick Hurley went to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys.

Short Stop Davy Force will be missing for 5 weeks after strainign abdominal muscles towards the end of the month.

The team will be playing against 24 opponents during May as well as taking the All Star Break at the end of the month. We will bring you all the details next month.

The Boston Red Caps put together a solid month to start the new season. They picked up a total of 12 wins and 9 losses to sit in joint second place in the NL table. This leaves them 7 games behind the surging Cincinnati Red Stockings.

The team started the season badly as they went 1-2 at home to the New York Gotham before losing 0-3 on the road to the Cincinnati Red Stockings. Their form then picked up as they managed to sweep the St Louis Brown Stockings 3-0 on the road before winning 2-1 on the road to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. This better form to a slight dip at home to the Brooklyn Atlantics 1-2 before picking back up with a 2-1 home series win against the Philadelphia Quakers. They finished the month in fine form by sweeping the Chicago White Stockings 3-0 at home.

The batting started the season solidly. The best from the plate was Second Baseman Steve Bellan. Bellan started all 21 games and picked up 21 hits from 64 at bats. This gave him an average of .328 allong with 10 runs scored along with 6 RBI's. Even with this he didn't win the NL Batter fo the Month award. That went to his team mate John Reilly who had a slightly worse average at .326 but had more hits, runs scored and RBI's.

For the pitcher that produced the best form, it was a difficult choice. The one we have opted for is Tony Mullane due to his ERA being better. He picked up 6 wins from 10 game starts, pitching 87 innings. He gave up 93 hits and 16 earned runs for an ERA of 1.66

The only real squad move was the loss of First Baseman Jake Goodman to the Chicago White Sox via waivers.

The team will be playing 24 games during May. They will also see the All Star Break. We will bring you all the news from these games next month.

1st May 1882

The Brooklyn Atlantics have had a steady start to the season. They picked up 11 wins during the month while giving up 10 losses. This has them sitting in third place in the NL table, 8 games behind the Cincinnati Red Stockings.

The team started the month badly as they lost the first home series 0-3 to the Cincinnati Red Stockings. Their form then picked up as they beat the Pittsburgh Alleghenys 2-1 at home before winning 2-1 on the road to the Chicago White Stockings. They then picked up another 2 road trips wins 2-1 against the St Louis Brown Stockings and the Boston Red Caps. There was a dip in form as they lost 1-2 at home to the New York Gothams before coming back with a 2-1 home series win against the Philadelphia Quakers to finish the month.

Very few of the batters managed to start all 21 games as the team struggled to find the perfect line up for the season. The best batter turned out to be Right Fielder Sleeper Sullivan. Sullivan managed to start 19 games and picked up 17 hits from 59 at bats. This saw him score 10 runs and 6 RBI's for an average of .288.

The pitching was more settled but still had a mixed start to the year. The best pitcher was Jim Whitney. Whitney started 11 games for 5 wins while pitching 95.2 innings. He gave up 85 hits and 18 earned runs for an ERA of 1.69

The team lost 3 players to the waiver wire process. The Chicago White Sox claimed pitcher Joe Blong, the Philadelphia Quakers claimed pitcher George Knight and the Detroit Wolverines claimed pitcher Frank Pearce.

The team will be in action against 24 opponents during May. They will also take the All Star Break. We will bring you a full report of this next month.
