Killen Guns Down HitmenTuesday, June 9th, 2015: "It was just one of those games, when everything went right. I threw a lot of strikes," Frank Killen said. "And the pitches they did get to hit, they didn't do anything with them." The New York Heroes pitcher really got it done in his 6-0 shutout victory over the Chicago Hitmen, shutting them down on 3 hits. Killen issued no walks and had 3 strikeouts. Currently Killen has a 5-6 won-lost record in 12 starts with a 4.62 ERA. He also has 48 strikeouts in 87.2 innings. Veale Tosses ShutoutFriday, June 12th, 2015: In an impressive outing, Bob Veale whitewashed the Boston Riders 3-0. "I'm getting a lot more downward movement instead of side to side. That side-to-side stuff can get hit a long way," said Veale, who is throwing with more of an overhand motion. "It's not rocket science. It was just a little adjustment, but that's all it took." The Sacramento hurler held Boston scoreless, allowed 3 hits, chalked up 6 strikeouts and yielded no walks. In 13 starts this season Veale has compiled a 9-2 record and a 2.50 ERA. Ouch! Carl Weilman Shelved by InjuryFriday, June 12th, 2015: Carl Weilman of the Indianapolis Engines was injured in today's game against New York and had to be helped off the field by the trainers. Cougars' Hines Smacks 5 HitsSunday, June 14th, 2015: "It was like I was hitting little league pitching again," said Paul Hines after his 5-hit performanace against the Brigade. "No offense meant to Wichita, but I could see the ball that well. But this wasn't a kid league park, it was Cougar Field. I'm just not too happy that we lost 8-6." The Charlotte center fielder had a fantastic day at the plate, knocking out 5 hits in 6 at-bats. His manager elaborated after the game to the press, saying, "Paul worked the entire offseason on trying to shorten his swing and stay inside the ball and the hard work is paying off in base hits." "That's what I'm trying to do," Hines said. "Be quick to the ball and let it travel a little farther so I get a better look at it. It sure did work today." Hines singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, hit an RBI double in the 5th, doubled in the 7th, flied out in the 9th and singled in the 12th. Sanders finished the game with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks in an excellent mound performance. "He pitched real well," his manager said. "Ben made pitches when he had to. This season Meekin has 4 wins and 2 losses and a 4.46 ERA. Dennis Martinez Sidelined for 3-4 WeeksWednesday, June 17th, 2015: Dennis Martinez at first refused to leave today's Las Vegas-Boston game after he suffered a hamstring strain while throwing a pitch. But his manager convinced him not to be foolish. "I want to be on the field," the feisty Boston reliever said. "I'll play through just about anything." Given time to reflect on the situation, he knew it was in his best interest to get immediate treatment. The injury is expected to keep Martinez out of action for 3-4 weeks. This season Martinez has picked up no saves and posted a 1-1 record with a 2.73 ERA. He has 14 relief appearances, tossed 29.2 innings and struck out 14. Chicago Signs MR Jenks For 2 yearsFriday, June 19th, 2015: Chicago fans celebrated as word of a signing became reality. Bobby Jenks won't be pulling up stakes anytime soon, as he has signed a 2-year extension at a pay rate of $955,000 per annum. Since he is widely seen as an integral part of the club, Chicago officials had to keep Jenks from jumping ship. Wichita, New Orleans Trade Players Saturday, June 20th, 2015: It came down to the last hour of a self-imposed trade deadline, but the Wichita Brigade and New Orleans Knights finally came to an agreement on a trade that had been rumored for weeks. The trade sends Wichita's 26-year-old right fielder Roger Repoz to New Orleans in a swap for 29-year-old starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco and $1,790,000 in cash. This year Montefusco has compiled a 3-9 record with a 4.97 ERA.
Sacramento No Match for SingerSunday, June 21st, 2015: Bill Singer of the San Antonio Sheriffs was on fire against Sacramento. He shut them down 1-0 on 3 hits and no runs with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks. "The first two pitches I'm looking for an out, a ground ball or a fly ball," Singer said. "I'm trying to get quick outs. I've never been a big believer in trying to strike a guy out from the very first pitch. It's too easy to end up behind in the count doing that." To date this year in 14 starts, Singer has crafted a 7-7 mark with a 4.75 ERA. NORTHERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Jones Chosen #1 PlayerMonday, June 22nd, 2015: At the age of 30, Fielder Jones might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. Where the San Antonio Sheriffs right fielder goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Piniella certainly made his mark last week. The Hitmen are 7 games below their Pythagorean record, which says they SHOULD be 34-35. But it's pretty much all been bad news for the Hitmen. They dove into the free agent market, signing Charley Jones (38 homers, 114 RBI last season) and Roger Connor (31, 104) in addition to bringing back Josh Hamilton (18, 75) to back Babe Ruth in what should have been baseball's most feared lineup, particularly figuring Frank Baker and Biz Mackey would build off strong rookie seasons.
What happened? Jones: Broken ankle second week of season, done at least until August Hamilton: Suffers devastating shoulder injury in spring training, out for season Connor: .276-4-37 so far, well off pace he set in six years in New York. Baker: Posted .870 OPS last season, .760 this season Mackey: After .300-7-61 rookie season, tore back muscle during spring, out until at least late July. Despite a horrible April, Ruth leads the majors in homers and is second in RBIs. But he's gotten zero help, and the pitching staff that was so strong last season has slipped to the middle of the pack. They are 4-12 in 1-run games and a stunning 12-24 at home. It's just been a really rough ride. They host first-place Wichita for four this coming week...they could have their season ended in short order here. |

"I'm not surprised by the news," one of the players told reporters, "It's part of the business and I understand that. I am looking forward to playing for the Sandmen." In 2015 Gross has hit at a .243 clip with 27 hits, 4 home runs, 12 RBIs and has scored 16 times. This season LaCoss has compiled a 7-6 record with a 4.38 ERA in 14 starts. Louisville, New Orleans Agree to DealFriday, June 26th, 2015: Signed... Sealed... and Delivered. Louisville has worked out terms of a deal to send 27-year-old shortstop Ozzie Smith to New Orleans for 25-year-old starting pitcher Mickey Lolich. Both teams expect to introduce their new players at press conferences later in the week. The slick fielding Smith hasn't played in the PBL this season, spending the year on Louisville's reserve squad. But Jimmy Rollins' lack of production in New Orleans means Smith should get some ABs simply by virtue of his defensive worth. Thus far this season Lolich has posted a 3-4 record, started 8 games, struck out 31 batters in 70.2 innings and compiled a 4.58 ERA. Stone's Hit Streak OverFriday, June 26th, 2015: Lady Luck was not on the side of George Stone or his teammates today at Bangers Ballpark. Everything went the Milwaukee Bangers way. They not only came away with a 9-2 victory, but also held Stone hitless in 1 at-bat to put an end to the left fielder's 23-game hitting streak. "It was a good run," Stone said afterward. "But it'd be much easier to take right now if we had won." Currently Stone has no home runs and a .360 batting average. Streak Finally Over, Nunamaker HitlessFriday, June 26th, 2015: The Sacramento Stingers got more than a 4-1 victory over Indianapolis today at Pathfinders Ballpark. They put an end to Les Nunamaker's 22-game hitting spree by holding him without a hit in 3 at-bats. But it was no big deal to the Engines catcher. Nunamaker seemed to feel more for his team than himself. "I had some great looks at some pitches that I should have hit. I missed some that I shouldn't have swung at. All in all, I wasn't much help with the bat today." Thus far this year Nunamaker has hit .266 with 8 home runs and 42 RBIs. Brigade LF Griffey OutSunday, June 28th, 2015: The Brigade received bad news this morning. Ken Griffey will miss 3-4 weeks due to a strained hamstring. In the Wichita-Milwaukee game he sustained the injury while running the bases. "I'm disappointed more than anything," he told reporters later in the day. "You can't help your team on the bench," Griffey sighed. "I'll do the rehab work and hope for a quick recovery." For the season Griffey is currently batting .338 with 7 home runs and 31 RBIs. In 67 games he has reached base at a .401 rate and scored 54 runs to date. NORTHERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

For the week the 25-year-old right fielder had a lofty .469 average (15-32), collecting 1 home run, 6 RBIs and 5 runs scored. Manning on the season is batting .296 with 5 home runs. His totals include 36 RBIs and 35 runs scored. He has played in 72 games. |

JULY 6
Anson Signs for 3 yearsWednesday, July 8th, 2015: Cap Anson won't be testing the free agent market. The hotshot first baseman will pocket $19,565,000 after re-signing with the Orcas earlier today, and will hang around another 3 years.
