![]() This is a rematch of the 1972 World Series, won in thrilling fashion by the Mets. Baltimore got here with their bats, but they have some intriguing names in the rotation. Fergie Jenkins, an underachieving JR Richard, and a very young Dave Stewart. Sadaharu Oh finally gets a chance at a World Series. The 37 year old isn’t the same player he was 5 years ago, but he’s still got some power, and is a pretty good nine hitter. Tom Griffin, Geoff Zahn and Bill Henry made Mets faithful forget about Tom Seaver pretty easily. Those 3 combined to go 60-23, while 2nd year player and first year closer Bruce Sutter excelled at the job, saving 31 games with a 2.03 era. Give Johnny Bench some credit. He’s baseball’s best defensive catcher. Pitchers love throwing to him. |

![]() Baltimore jumps out to a 5-0 lead, making Mets fans wish Geoff Zahn was Tom Seaver, but Andre Thornton hits a 2 out, 3 run home run in the third inning, capping a 4 run outburst to get NY back in the game. The Mets tie it in the 5th, and take a lead they will not relinquish with a Johnny Bench home run in the 6th. NY wins game one, 8-6. Fergie Jenkins hold the Mets without a run until the ninth inning, but by that time, the game as all but over. Baltimore scores 2 in the first, and 3 in the fifth. They win game two, 6-1. With the game tied at one, Andre Thornton reached base with a two out ground ball which was fumbled SS Rick Burelson. That put 2 runners on when Johnny Bench went deep on the next pitch giving NY a 4-1 lead. Sadaharu Oh hits his first World Series home run, but the Bench homer was too much to overcome. Mets win game three, 5-3. Dave Roberts pitches 11 innings for Baltimore, Geoff Zahn pitches 10 for the Mets before walking the first 2 Orioles hitters in the eleventh, giving way to Bruce Sutter. Sutter gives up a soft single to Bake McBride, then walked the winning run in as Baltimore ties the series with an extra inning 3-2 win. Ron Cey, Bake McBride, and Alan Wiggins all go deep, while Fergie Jenkins pitches a complete game. The Mets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but could not score again until the ninth. The rally falls short, and the Orioles hold on to a 5-3 win. Ted Simmons and Rick Burleson each homer in the fifth inning, a 5 run frame for the Orioles, giving them a 5-1 lead. The Mets Cotton Nash hits a solo shot in the sixth. Down to just 4 outs remaining, the Mets get 2 runners on, with two out. German Barranca, a 20 year old with 4 MLB home runs hits a rocket to the left field bleachers to tie the game at 5!!! The Orioles do not score in the ninth, leading to this…. Mets stage an incredible comeback to force a seventh and deciding game! GAME 7 In the opening frame, German Barranca leads off with a double. The next 3 batters all walk, scoring Barranca. Oscar Gamble then hits a GRAND SLAM!! What a start for the Mets! The Mets spend the rest of the game piling it on, as the Orioles, who were 3 runs up with 4 outs to go, have no fight left in them. The Mets win the World Series!! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

1977-78 Offseason News and Notes
The 1977 draft had a weird order. The Blue Jays chose first, while the Mariners chose second. Actually, the Mariners did finish with the 2nd worst record, so that is fine, but the Jays should have picked 4th. I did not edit the order, as each round was different do to compensation, and i just wasn't sure if there was some sort of expansion agreement to let the teams pick top 2 in year 2. I don't know, but this controversial draft will stand. The Jays picked Cal Ripken first from a very talented field. I love Dave Stieb, but he should not have been picked 3rd. Bill Gullickson is a steal at 21, and my namesake, George Bell has been drafted!!! ![]() ![]() Here's a look back at the WS MVP winners from the 1960's. The game doesn't track these, as its not an official in game award, so i have been, and will share every few years. ![]() ![]() A slam dunk Hall of Fame inductee. Curt Simmons was the ace of arguably the greatest dynasty of all time. His Dodgers teams played in 11 World Series' in 13 years, winning 8 of them, and he was a major reason why. ![]() Rod Carew was a top 10 draft pick, who just never really got a chance. His skills diminished, and only played in 43 MLB games. He hit .350 in those limited at bats. Foster also deteriorated, only earning a backup OF job with the Orioles these last 2 seasons. ![]() The Mets get raided, losing Andre Thornton and Tom Griffin. The Champs have lost a lot these first 2 years of free agency. The Jays pick up Dave Parker, but they are still very thin until at least Harold Baines and Cal Ripken are ready. The Reds add Bill Stoneman(former Red Sox ace) to a already strong rotation. They will be very good next season. ![]() |

Wow, Rod Carey retired! None of the MVPs in this universe seemed to outplay the versions in reality, though only a handful have a close comparison.
Free agency is going to get fun! Love the new uniforms as always. |

Whoa - 7 Reds are projected to have Top 10 performances. Will this lead to a Red October in 1978?

What a loaded draft! A lot of incredible players in here. I'm a Dave Stieb fan, so I'll be keeping an eye on him. It's just a shame he was drafted by the Dodgers. Quote:

1978 MLB Regular Season
I've been doing this for over a year now!! Wow. Thank you to everyone following along. I appreciate the encouragement, and I'm glad if your enjoying it. I am. Here are the 1978 season's top 10 prospects ![]() Sandy Koufax update to begin the season. After spending the 1975 season as the Twins closer, and the 1976 season as the worst reliever on the Twins staff, Koufax did not retire, and signed in Boston. He became a very trusted reliever in the Red Sox bullpen throwing 86.1 innings, with a 3.34 era. He has resigned in Boston, and at 42, looks to be filling the same role as last year. Koufax hasn’t been the same pitcher since his accident, but I’m impressed he’s still doing good things at this age. ![]() Two months into the season, the NL East is completely below .500. The last place Philadelphia Phillies, at 16-30, are only 6 games out of first! First team to 81 wins will win that division!! I don’t think we have ever seen a team finish under .500 make the playoffs. Wait, what am I saying? Ofcourse we haven’t, I would know that!! NOO!! Dave Winfield was the perfect Twin. Playing in his home town, being really good at baseball. He’s one of those players I was rooting for given the circumstances. Winfield joins the Indians, which gives him a great chance at a World Series. He’s a quality player who is a great addition to the tribe. A trio of young pitchers head to the Twin city, and while all have potential, Winfield was the face of the franchise. Tough deal for Twin fans. Another NOOOOO trade. The Expos trade Fred Lynn to Pittsburgh! ![]() I loved the Lynn, Parker, Griffey outfield. I incorrectly stated they would win a lot of games in Montreal, but it did not happen. Parker was traded 2 years ago. Griffey’s injury problems limited him, and the Expos let him sign a MLC with the Yankees AAA team, Columbus. Now Fred Lynn is in Pittsburgh. Shows what I know, but I do think Gullickson has a great future as a starter. Just figured I would give everyone a look at what game day looks like on August 4th, 1978. Remember, I am big on the logos, uni’s and colours, so I often take a look at this stuff. Love it. Love the way it looks!! What a nerd! HA ![]() ![]() The Cubs and Cardinals will be fighting it out for the NL east, and both teams are now well over .500!! The Indians and Orioles will do the same in the AL. The White Sox and Reds look pretty safe to win their divisions. Ouch, huge blow to the White Sox. Jon Matlack, last years Rube Waddell winner, and 21-4 this year, damages an elbow ligament, and will miss an entire year minimum. He’s been nothing but great since he signed that big free agent deal. Without their ace, the White Sox chances at post season glory just went down. ![]() With 6 games remaining, the Orioles hosted the Indians, who are separated by just 1 game in the AL east. This series will go a long way to determining who will play for the pennant. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() Another opportunity for a Chicago/Chicago World Series is missed. Seems like those two will never meet! It's looking like the best pick in last years loaded draft was the Cubbies fourth selection, Bob Horner. 50 home runs, 144 RBI's not only make him the probable rookie of the year, he's going to win the MVP award as well. Horner is the Cubs offense. They are not here without him. Baltimore's Tom Griffin had a career season, posting a 2.15 ERA, in his first year as an Oriole. The former Met beat his current club last year in the fall classic, and has become a true ace sense the move. I believe this series is simple, which probably means it isn't. Bob Horner plays well, Cubs win. Bob Horner doesn't, Cubs lose. |

As much success, as the Reds have had, they have been a frustrating team to root for as of late...
Great work with this dynasty, I just found it today and read it all! |
