I had two big surprises. First is the margin by which Montréal won - it's nearly three times better than any other team, and larger than all the other teams (save for 4) combined. It could probably have been higher were it not for some Western teams coming to Montréal once every 3 years. Anyway, my other surprise was how low Ottawa is (it's 12th, with less than 2%).

I think that in the past 5 seasons or so, they're second in the NHL in ticket sales after Montréal.

Difference between tickets sold and people actually in the arena though too.

Has as much to do with their regular seasons being generally meaningless as anything.

HUH? 35-50% all of the time....that is ridiculous.

As of mid January they were averaging almost 18,000 in paid attendance for an arena that holds 20,000 +.

Yes there were/are 3,000 - 4,000 empty seats a night this year, but 50% empty is ridiculous. I believe lately it has been getting better.

They had a huge sellout streak going until last season...they are really,really hurt by the economy, it is brutal. In one of the Detroit papers they did do a survey asking season ticket holders why the weren't renewing their tickets and by a long shot, the main reason was that they couldn't afford them anymore because of the economy.

Yes there are some other factors....Detroit has been on top forever and the regular season is meaningless to them. Overall their schedule has been terrible....Playing Colombus, Chicago, St.Louis and Nashville every second game doesn't exactly stir interest. It is a bit better this year because all of those teams (except maybe Nashville) have improved and are more exciting to watch. But all in all the economy is the big reason...same with the Pistons, you can get some really good deals on tickets right now.

After almost 16 years of huge fan support, calling them the most overrated fanbase ever is a bit of an exaggeration. After just a season or so of non-sellouts.

Big game tonight for the Habs as the top two teams in the conference face off.

It could be a big momentum builder for either team but I think Montreal really needs to come out strong and show they are a legit competitor to top teams after a so-so trip in the West. Problem is Brodeur had amazing starts in 10 of his last 11 games.

Really looking forward to this game!

I guess the brainwashing worked. How often have we heard that the Habs were a strong defensive team with average attack (what did Lafleur say, that they had 4 fourth lines?), with possibly the best offensive defenseman and certainly the best defensive defenseman in the conference, supported by Hamrlik and co... well, the Habs are second in the NHL in goals scored, a single goal behind the Senators. Who would've thought that Mark Streit would get 50 points, and trail Koivu by a single point?

I wouldn't call it a so-so trip out west. The loss to San Jose was bad, but other than that it was a good trip. There was no surprise or upset in losing to the Ducks.

As for Brodeur...the Habs just beat him 10 days ago, hopefully they can do it again.

Getting one point when you're up 3 goals with 18 minutes to play and 2 goals with 7 minutes to play is a complete disaster.

Well, if I had a 3-goal lead entering the 3rd period, and systematically let the opponent tie it up in regulation, forcing an overtime, in every single game of the regular season, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Why? Because I'd probably finish in 1st place in the standings.

That's great but trying to spin a blown 3 goal lead into a positive is a bit over the top.

This was a BAD decision for the Flyers, there's no way to possibly spin it otherwise.
