Today is Bill Grant's 34th birthday and Dale Gilchrist's 26th! Memphis Mules (60-66 .476 26 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (86-40 .683 14 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) MEM: Robin Morris (30-R) (8-9 4.02 ERA 143.1 IP, 141 H, 15 HR, 43 BB, 83 SO) JAX: Del Warwick (29-L) (9-7 2.87 ERA 175.2 IP, 175 H, 10 HR, 34 BB, 114 SO) Gold Glove(02) We have faced Foltz twice this season and whacked him around pretty well both times, but could not manage to pin a loss on him. We won one of the games and lost the other. 7.04 ERA, 7.2 IP, 12 H, 2 HR, 1 BB, 10 SO. Warwick gave up 5 runs on 9 hits and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts in 5 innings last time out in a no decision that we lost. Bottom of the First Junior Danielson strikes out... Danny Stewart grounds out to short. Fernando Tello flies out to left.... A passed ball scores Gonzalez... 4 to 3, Mules. With the count full, we put Larry Devaney on intentionally to load the bases back up.... How stupid is that? At least give him a chance to swing at a bad pitch.... P Robin Morris lines out to right and Gress tags up, but Fernando Tello shoots a bullet to the plate and he is out! Bottom of the Seventh Jack Washburn hits a home run to right center! Tie Game: 4 to 4! Top of the Ninth On the Hill: 2-time All-Star Bill Grant (34-L), after a scoreless 8th. 8-9-1 up for the Mules. Tony Weninger grounds into a 6-4-3 double play!! Bottom of the Ninth On the Hill: John Robillard (28-R), their closer, after a scoreless 8th. 6-7-8 up for us and all of our good pinch-hitters (relatively speaking) were used futilely already... Jack Washburn, who hit a home run last time up, strikes out... Frank Roadman flies out to deep left. Don Kern, who hit a home run earlier, strikes out looking.... Extras! First one in over a month. Top of the Tenth 2-3-4, the Big Boys, for the Mules are up. They go down in order! Bottom of the Tenth 9-1-2 up for us. PH Dave Thompson (28-R) grounds out to 3rd. 2B Leander Gooding walks on 3 pitches! Danny Stewart grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4. Cal Doty pops out to left.... Top of the Eleventh New Pitcher: Bob Craig (26-R). They send up 2 pinch-hitters, but go down in order! Bottom of the Eleventh New Pitcher: Jackie Wade (28-R), who got 2 outs on Friday and gave us a hit and a walk. Tom McDowell lines the first pitch to center for a hit! Jack Washburn tries to bunt, but whiffs on the first try and bunts the second try foul. He then takes a 1-2 pitch in the shoulder! Frank Roadman who cannot be pinch-hit for because Bart Daw needs the day off, lines an 0-2 pitch left for a hit and the bases are loaded with no outs! Don Kern, who cannot be pitch hit for because Bert Swope needs the day off, grounds into a force at home 4-2... Swope can pinch-hit, though; so here he is... He swings at the first pitch and grounds into a force at home, 3-2.... Unbelievable.... We cannot score a run with the bases loaded and no outs... One more try... The New Orleans Pelicans are here to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They just lost 2 of 3 in Orlando and have lost 7 of their last 8 games, getting shut out 3 times. We are 4-4 against them on the season and split 4 games with them the first time they visited, May 20-23. They are 15th in scoring with 3.47 runs per game (Jacksonville is #3 with 4.47). They are last in HR with 56 and we are 8th with 94. The Pelicans are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.18 per game (Jacksonville is #1 with 3.17). Their run differential is -90, 4th worst in the MLB, and ours is +166, still tops. New Orleans Pelicans (56-71 .441 31.5 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (88-40 .688 15.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) NO: Bill Colby (33-R) (7-14 4.99 ERA 164 IP, 190 H, 23 HR, 51 BB, 88 SO) JAX: Dave Buchalter (26-R) (2-0 2.19 ERA 12.1 IP, 9 H, 1 HR, 8 BB, 5 SO) Colby is 2nd in the MLB in losses and tied for 1st in most HR allowed. He has lost more games than any other pitcher in the MLB (67). Nevertheless, he shut us out on 5 hits with no walks and 4 strikeouts the last time we faced him. We beat him up the first time we met him this year. 3.75 ERA, 12 IP, 10 H, 1 HR, 1 BB, 5 SO. Buchalter has won both of his starts so far. He gave up 1 run on 5 hits and 3 walks with 2 strikeouts in 5.1 innings last time out. ![]() But I am also often an inning or two ahead before writing things down, especially early and even with no-hit bids. Even then, I try to keep it subtle (not always successfully), as in this solid effort by Brownie back in the day. In the later innings, I go into live mode, though, often writing things at-bat by at-bat, which leads to a choppy style I don't always bother to clean up. -.- I should stop babbling before I jinx Jimmyboy for life.

New Orleans Pelicans (56-72 .438 32.5 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (89-40 .690 15.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) NO: Terry Henry (33-R) (6-8 5.22 ERA 119 IP, 153 H, 8 HR, 52 BB, 62 SO) JAX: Jim Baucom (23-L) (23-2 1.56 ERA 218.2 IP, 140 H, 8 HR, 30 BB, 210 SO) All-Star(3: 02-04) We have faced Henry once this season and he beat us, even though we scored 4 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks with 2 strikeouts on 5 innings. Baucom gave up 4 runs on 3 hits, 1 home run and 2 walks with 10 strikeouts in 7 innings last time out in a loss. He would seem to be a heavy favorite today, but we have been shut out by Henry before... 1B Jack Washburn (22-L) was placed on the Disabled List and we called up LF Tommy Adams (22-L), our 2nd round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft. He is hitting .313 for Daytona (A), though without any power. Fernando Tello will move to 1st. The Birmingham Barons are here to play a short 2 game set. I invited them to stay longer, but they insisted that we follow the schedule. They lost 2 of 3 at home to Memphis over the weekend. The Barons are last in fewest runs allowed with 5.25 per game (Jacksonville is #1 with 3.13). Their run differential is -149, 2nd worst in the MLB, and ours is +178, still #1. We had an incident with CF Gary McKellar yesterday and it seems his former attitude problems have resurfaced. The hotel maid complained about his behavior and I tried to talk to him about it, but he was surly and rude and told me it was none of my business..... So he has been shipped back to Daytona (A) until he can show the coaches there that he is trying to change his behavior. We recalled rookie RF Phil Moore (23-R), who is only hitting .254 for the Tortugas. We are back home to play the Providence Steamrollers a 4 game series. They lost 3 of 4 at home to Orlando over the weekend.
