End of Season 1881
7th October 1881 The fans of the Chicago White Stockings are again cheering the loudest of the NL teams as their favoured side picked up another pennant. The team had another excellent season and led from the outset and were never really seriously challenged for their pennant. The team finished the year with a record of 56-28, the best in Baseball. The season started with a winning month and never looked back as the team won every month they played. The October games were no different as they won their final 4 games 4-2 at home to the Boston Red Caps followed by a 3-0 home series win against the Brooklyn Atlantics 12-4, 7-2 and 10-9 The stars of this stellar show were Third Baseman Ezra Sutton and Veteran starter Jim Britt. Ezra Sutton has only been with the club for just over a year but in that time has become a fans favourite. He played in 71 games during the past season and picked up 81 hits from 241 at bats. This gave him an average of .327 along with 36 runs and 31 RBI's. He picked up the NL batting crown with these figures. The veteran Jim Britt seems to be able to go on and on winnings. This year he had another wonderful year as he added another 29 wins to his record total. He pitched 373 innings in the 43 games he started. His ERA for the season was 2.92 for the year. If this does not win him another Pitcher of the Year award then the voting public have not been watching the same season as we have. Full season pitching stats Full season batting stats We will bring you all the play off news when it has been played. After the announcement by the MLB that they are extending the league to 16 teams, we will bring you a special report on the expansion draft once it has been completed. |

End of Season 1881
7th October 1881 The fans of the Red Stockings have had another season of near misses again this year as they failed to gain the pennant. The fans are starting to ask questions of the management to find out if they have what it takes to find the winning formula. The team's record for the year was 49-35 which in most seasons would have seen them much closer to the pennant but they are in the NL with the all powerful White Stockings and they need to find a way to stop them. The reason they missed out this year was the slow start in April where they allowed the White Stockings to take a 9 game lead that they just couldn't claw back. The team finished the season on a high as they won their final 4 games with a 5-2 home win over the Brooklyn Atlantics followed by a 3-0 series sweep on the road to the Boston Red Caps 3-1, 4-2 and 4-1 The stars of the show this year were Second Baseman Fred Dunlap and Pitcher Monte Ward. While the batting did have its struggles this year, Dunlap was the star of the show. He managed to collect an average of .307 during the season with 107 hits from 348 at bats in 84 game starts. He also collected 54 runs and 38 RBI's in a very productive season. Monte Ward was once again the pitcher who could be relied upon to perform on the mound. He started 42 games and got through 358.1 innings worth of work. This work saw him pick up 25 wins while giving up 358 hits and 87 earned runs for an ERA of 2.19. The fans are hoping to see his name in big print when the NL end of season awards are announced. Full season pitching stats Full season batting stats After the announcement by the MLB that they are extending the league to 16 teams, we will bring you a special report on the expansion draft once it has been completed. |

End of Season 1881
7th October 1881 The Cleveland Blues continued to show this year that they have finally found a combination of players that are good enough to be consistently at the top of the AL table. The fans have once again been able to celebrate a pennant win for the third season running. The team finished with a 48-36 record. This record was built on hard work and solid play all year. The team only had 1 bad month and even then their good months more than out weighed this blip. The fans are now hoping that their team can beat the all conquering White Stockings at the third time of asking. Will it be third time lucky? The team finished the regular season with a steady run of 3-1 in wins. They beat the St Louis Brown Stockings 10-4 at home before winning a road trip to Philadelphia 2-1 in games. 8-5, 5-4 and 2-5 The star of the show all season was Centre Fielder Roger Conner. No one else could get close to his skill in baseball as he had what can only be described as a career season. He picked up a batting average of .393 from his 84 game starts. This included hitting the ball 139 times from 354 at bats. He scored 67 runs and 53 RBI's. Every fans of the Blues is expecting he will be honoured with the AL Batter of the Year award come the Awards Dinner in late October to go with the AL batting crown he has been awarded. As well as this stellar season Connor also managed to break numerous single season records on his way to those figures. He broke the one season record for number of hits with 139. He also set a new record for average during a season with .393. The pitching could not compete in star status to that of Connor but they were still very solid all year. Lee Richmond is the player that the fans are loving to watch pitch at the moment as he managed 27 wins during the season from 42 starts and 350 innings pitched. He gave up 350 hits and 91 earned runs for an ERA of 2.34 Full season pitching stats Full season batting stats We will bring you a full report from the playoffs once they have been played. After the announcement by the MLB that they are extending the league to 16 teams, we will bring you a special report on the expansion draft once it has been completed. |

End of Season 1881
7th October 1881 The fans of the Athletics had to suffer through another tough season as their favourite team put up another sorry showing. The team finished with a record of 37-47 as they placed last in the AL table. The team started the season and never recovered as they played below average ball for the whole season. October was no different as they struggled to finish with a 2-2 record. They beat the Baltimore Orioles on the road 7-3 and then followed that up with a 1-2 home series loss to the Cleveland Blues 5-8, 4-5 and 5-2 The fans favourites during the year all struggled and the only ones to show any fight were Pud Galvin from the mound and George Wood with the bat. Galvin somehow managed to string together a pretty good season with 20 wins against the back drop of some poor play by those around him. H epitched 335 innings in 42 games starts for these wins. He gave up 383 hits and 111 earned runs for an ERA of 2.98 George Wood didn't set the world ablaze this year with the bat but was good enough to have another solid season. He picked up 99 hits from 355 at bats in 84 games to finish with the best average of all the starters at .279. He also scored 44 runs and 42 RBI's during the season. Full season pitching stats Full season batting stats After the announcement by the MLB that they are extending the league to 16 teams, we will bring you a special report on the expansion draft once it has been completed. |

End of Season 1881
7th October 1881 The fans of the St Louis Brown Stockings were hoping for something better from what has turned out to be the final season of the team in its current form. The team finished with a record of 41 and 43 and this sums up how they played all year with ups and downs all over the place. They managed to be swept 0-3 four times during the season but this was offset by the fact that they did manage to win 3 series by a record of 3-0. The final four games of the season were no different as they finished 1-3. The team first lost on the road to the Cleveland Blues 4-10. This was followed by a 1-2 road trip loss to the Baltimore Orioles 3-4, 4-6 and 7-6 The players who were the best performers during the season were Right Fielder George Hall and Pitcher Larry Corcoran. George Hall had another solid season with the bat as some others in the line up struggled. He picked up 102 hits from 302 at bats in 80 games. These hits produced 55 runs and 43 RBI's for an average of .338 Corcoran had another 20 win season as he continued to show he is the best pitcher the Brown Stockings have. In the 357 innings he pitched he managed to pick up 24 wins from 42 starts. He gave up 359 hits and 107 earned runs for an ERA of 2.70. Full season pitching stats Full season batting stats After the announcement by the MLB that they are extending the league to 16 teams, we will bring you a special report on the expansion draft once it has been completed. Along with the news from the new St Louis Brown Stockings draft after the current incarnation's decision to move to Louisville. |

Play Offs 1881
Play Off Results
14th October 1881 The fans of the White Stockings are in full celebration mode again today. The team made it 4 MLB Championship Wins in a row yesterday with another wonderful 4-1 series victory over the Cleveland Blues. They have now won 6 MLB Championship Series and the fans just cant stop partying with this one. The team will be parading the MLB trophy through the streets of Chicago later today and we hope all you fans will be able to join us to celebrate. Game 1 was a 10-7 Chicago win in what was a topsy turvy type game. Our White Stockings were behind after 4 innings 1-3 after allowing 2 runs to go in the 4th. By the 7th they had managed to turn that round to a 10-4 lead after a major run blast in the 6th and 7th where the team managed to score 9 runs. They then had to hang on through the rest of the game as the Blues came back at them with 3 more runs in the 9th. The star with the bat was Harvey Stovey who managed 2 hits with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. The win went to Jim Devlin who allowed 7 runs in his 9 innings pitched. The Second game was more comfortable for the White Stockings as they cruised to an early 3-0 lead by the end of the 3rd before being steady the rest of the way to finish with a 5-2 victory. The pitching of Harry Salisbury was excellent as he allowed only 8 hits and 1 earned run in the 9 innings pitched to earn the Star Man award for the game. The batting was solid with Ezra Sutton again proving what a key acquisition he has been. He picked up 3 hits and scored 1 run and 1 RBI in the game. Game 3 saw a much tighter affair as the Blues pushed our White Stockings all the way. The White Stockings won the game 3-2 but were hanging on at the end of the game as they started to tire. The team jumped out to an early lead by scoring 3 runs in the 4th innings but then had to rely on their pitching to win the game from that point as the batting disappeared. Jim Britt was the just the man up for that task as he pitched 9 wonderful innings on his way to the win and the Star Man award. He gave up only 7 hits and 1 earned run during the game. Pete Hotaling had the best game with the bat as he had 2 hits, 1 run and 1 RBI. The White Stockings failed to make it a clean sweep in the series as they went down 4-6 in a tight game 4. The team put up some solid batting numbers between innings 1 and 5 which saw them level with the blues 3-3 but then they couldn't keep up with the rate through 6 and 7 as they only managed 1 more run to the Blues 3. The best of the batting came from Jack Glasscock who had 2 hits and 2 runs scored. Candy Cummings picked up the Star man award in a losing effort as he gave up 4 runs in the 7 innings he pitched. The White Stockings finally claimed title number 6 after winning game 5 by a score of 8-4. The runs from both sides were scored early in the game as the score was 8-4 after just 4 innings. The inning that won the game for the White Stockings was number 2 where they managed to blast 5 runs past the Blues and take an unassailable lead for the rest of the game. Harry Salisbury picked up his second win of the series in another star man performance as he gave up only 1 earned run in the 9 innings pitched. The best batter was Tom York who had 3 hits, 2 runs and 1 RBI for the game. The fans of the Cleveland Blues had to watch in agony as their side again failed to beat the Chicago White Stockings at the third time of asking. The fans are now starting to worry that the team may have missed its chance as they see each season go by without the MLB trophy. The team lost the Series 1-4 but were always in with a shout in each game but just couldn't find the winning touch. The first game of the series was a game that could so easily have been won by the Blues if they hadn't let their pitching and fielding slip in the 6th and 7th inning. In the end they lost the game 7-10 after allowing the White Stockings to score 9 runs in those poor middle innings. The team led 4-1 before that point and were holding their own. The final flourish with 3 runs in the 9th was to little to late to see the game go against them. Dick Hunt was the Star Man from the bench as he picked up 1 hit, 1 run and 3 RBI's. The loss went to Tom Healey who pitched a poor 6.2 innings to give up 8 earned runs. Game 2 saw the Blues fall further behind in the series as they lost 2-5. The Blues were never really in the game as they went down 0-3 early and only really rallied in the 4th with 1 run and the 9th with a run when the game was lost. The batting struggled all game to get going against the Chicago Pitching and they finished with only 8 hits between them. The pitching of Jim McCormick was solid like always but couldn't do enough to win the game as the fielding didn't help him out. He finished with the loss but gave up no earned runs. The Blues came close to getting a game back in game 3 but just didn't have enough in the tank to take the game. The team gave up an early 3-0 lead as their pitching again had a blip in the 4th inning giving away 3 runs. This was rectified for the rest of the game though as they shut the White Stockings out afterwards. The batting tried its best to then haul the team back into the game but couldn't find what was needed against a tough Chicago pitching unit. They did manage to pick up 2 runs over innings 5-9 but it wasn't enough as the team lost 2-3 and fell to 0-3 behind in the series. The loss went to Lee Richmond who put up a good fight in the game but was credited with the 3 runs against him that the White Stockings scored. The Blues finally got on the board in a tight game 4 as they managed to out last the White Stockings over the 9 innings. The team won the 4th game of the series 6-4 but it was in the balance right up until the end. Both teams scored 2 runs in the first and 1 in the 4th to be level 3-3 going into the crucial middle innings. These middle innings managed to see the Blues outscore the White Stockings 3-2 to take the lead 6-4 and go on to win the game. The batter to perform the best for the Blues was Jack Gleason who picked up 2 hits, 1 run and 1 RBI. The win went to Tom Healy to make up for his previous loss. Game 5 finally saw the Blue fall to the superior skill of the White Stockings team. The team lost this final game 4-8 as they saw their opponents bash them off the park early on in the game. The team were 6-1 down by the end of the 2nd inning and never recovered as they lost the game 4-8. The pitching of Jim McCormick was again solid giving up only 2 earned runs during the game but he was again let down by the Blues Achilles heel in that they cannot field that well when under pressure. The batting was again only average as they couldn't find the hits to compete with the White Stockings. |

Off Season 1881 part 1
16th October 1881 The fans of the Orioles are poring over the list of player movements through free agency, retirements and the expansion draft to see which teams were the winners and losers. They want to check this to see where it leaves their Orioles in terms of competitiveness for next season. The team has seen the following changes this off season so far. They allowed John Gaffney and U Wood to leave as free agents at the end of the season. They also lost Centre Fielder Ham Allen through retirement. Allen never really made it in the big leagues as he played only 2 MLB games in his career. The rest of the time he spent in the minor league system. (real life stats 16 games 66 at bats, 16 hits, 8 runs and 7 RBI's for an average of .273) Also retiring this year is Right Fielder Hugh Reid. Reid never made it to the MLB and spent his whole career as a minor league player. (real life stats 1 game with 0 hits) Finally the 3rd retiree from the Orioles is Mike Ledwith. Ledwith was another who never played for the big club and spent his career as a minor leaguer. (real life stats 1 game 1 hit for an average of .250) The biggest loss of players was through the expansion draft where the Orioles lost 23 players. Notable departures included Right Fielder Dave Pierson, First Baseman Jim Foran and Third Baseman Levi Meyerle. The full list of players lost is shown below Hopefully some of these will be replaced with the first year player draft in November. We will bring you a full report on that and the player awards once the draft is complete. |

Off Season 1881 part 1
16th October 1881 The new team in the AL from Boston are called the Americans. We here at the Herald have decided to support this team in opposition to our rival news paper the Chronicle who support the Red Caps. The new Americans team franchise has been awarded to 58 year old New York Banker Robert Rivers. Being in banking, Mr Rivers knows the value of money and how to look after it by keeping the purse strings pulled tight. He also expects a lot from his employees with the cash he does allow to be spent. Mr Rivers is currently running the club himself but is looking for a new GM to handle the day to day running of the club. The inexperienced 53 year old David James has been hired as the teams new Manager and it is hoped he will have the know how to bring some success to the club long term. The team will be playing their games at the newly developed Huntington Avenue Grounds here in Boston. The ground has been sited right next door to the Boston Red Caps South End Grounds stadium so should be easy to find. The players that will be starting the year in the Americans Jersey will include the following 23 who were all selected in the Expansion Draft. Notable selections include First Baseman Steve Brady from the Champion Chicago White Stockings, Short Stop Davy Force and Second Baseman Tim Murnane both from local city rivals the Boston Red Caps. These players will be augmented by selections from the First year player draft. We will bring you all that news once it has been completed. |

Off Season 1881 part 1
16th October 1881 The fans of the Red Caps are checking the teams roster to see who they have left to support come next season. They have lost a few who they thought might not leave so are wary over how their team will play next year. The fans of the Red Caps will also now have a rival in the city in the form of the Boston Americans. We here at the Chronicle hope you will stick with the Red Caps just as we are and not switch your allegiance to the new AL team who we will not be reporting on. The changes within the team structure so far was surprising in that it didn't include any front office changes after a poor previous season. They team lost no players to free agency or retirement but did lose 24 players to the expansion draft. The notable losses from the big league squad included Second Baseman Joe Quest, Second Baseman Joe Battin, Short Stop Davy Force, Short Stop Mike McGeary, Right Fielder Clipper Flynn, Second Baseman Tim Murnane, Centre Fielder Joe Kernan and Short Stop Bill Craver. The full list of lost players is shown below The fans hope the first year player draft will address the holes left and we will bring you all the news of this once it is complete. |

Off Season 1881 part 1
16th October 1881 The fans of the Atlantics have seen quite a bit of upheaval at the start of this post season. Firstly they have lost 19 players through the expansion draft. They also released players to free agency. The team has also already been busy in the trade market. The first piece of business the team made was to trade Veteran Pitcher George Zettlein to the Cincinnati Red Stockings in exchange for 24 year old minor league Third Baseman John Morrissey and 22 year old minor league Catcher Sleeper Sullivan. The team also released 8 minor league players to free agency. The team also lost 19 players in the expansion draft. The most notable losses were Second Baseman Joe Gerhardt, Short Stop Lou Say, Catcher Bill Harbridge, Catcher Whitey Ritterson and Right Fielder Jimmy Hallinan. The full list of departures is shown below. The team will hope to replace these players in the first year player draft. A full report will be bought to you once this is complete. |

Off Season 1881 part 1
16th October 1881 There is a buzz around the south side of the City of Chicago today as the White Sox moved into their new stadium. We here at the Chicago Sun are going to back them to the hilt as they look like being our kind of club unlike the north sides White Stockings. The new owner of the White Sox is 62 year old New Hampshire born Vic Stokes. Stokes has been big in transportation all his life but has decided to diversify into the new sport of Baseball. While Stokes seems a very amiable fellow his employees all talk of a drive to succeed that very few see. A drive that he expects his employees to also have as he pushes for them to achieve the best they can for the club. They do say he is happy to spend money to see that they achieve these given aims. The club will play its first home games of the new year at the newly built South Side Park. The owner is currently running the club himself as he is yet to sign a new GM but he has signed inexperienced manager Javier Fernandez. Fernandez hasn't managed any big league clubs yet but is looking forward to the prospect of leading the White Sox to glory. The players that were selected in the expansion draft included Second Baseman Candy Nelson and Left Fielder John Glenn from Philadelphia Athletics and Jimmy Hallinan from the Brooklyn Atlantics. The full draft log can be seen below. The team will get a chance to add extra players through the first year player draft at the start of November. We will bring you all the details once it is complete |

Off Season 1881 part 1
16th October 1881 The White Stockings front office have had very little time between seeing their team win a 6th Championship to when they are back at work planning for the defence of the title next season. We here at the Times are going to continue to back the White Stockings from the north side of the city over the new Chicago White Sox from the south side of the city. The Owner was quick to renew the contract of GM Al Haney as he signed him to a new 3 year deal. The team saw 1 departure through retirement at the end of the season as Harry Deane decided to call time on his career. Left Fielder Deane spent 11 years with the White Stockings organisation. During that time he managed to win 5 MLB Championship medals for his mantle piece. He last played for the big club in 1878 but during his time with the club he played 66 games with 15 as a starter. He picked up 13 hits from 83 at bats to score 15 runs and 9 RBI's along with an average of .157. (real life stats 53 games for 225 at bats with 54 hits, 32 runs and 15 RBI's along with an average of .240) The team saw 22 players lost through the expansion draft process. The most notable losses were Catcher George Miller and Right Fielder Steve Brady. The full list of players lost is given below. The team are hoping to plug these gaps in the first year player draft. We will bring you all the news from this draft once it is completed. |

Off Season 1881 part 1
16th October 1881 The off season is no more than 2 days old and the fans of the Red Stockings have seen a big shake up at their favourite club. While the fans were expecting players to leave due to the expansion draft they didn't expect the front office moves that were also made. The club announced that the owner had got to the point that he was so fed up waiting for the pennant win the team deserved that he needed to make changes. To this end he fired the manager Nelson Chapman and appointed the current bench coach, Juan Moran in his place. Moran has been with the club for 5 seasons as the bench coach and has been rewarded with a step into the big chair in the dug out. The fans are hoping this change will see the team get over the line this coming year. The owner then did the opposite to the GM position as he gave the current GM, Mike Bass, a new 1 year contract. The club announced that long time player Left Fielder Charlie Pabor was retiring from professional baseball. The 35 year old Pabor spent 11 years with the club both as a big league player and later a minor leaguer and was well liked in the local community. He was a two time MLB All Star during his time with the club and enjoyed playing 177 times for the major league team. These games saw him start 144 games with a total of 694 at bats. He claimed 187 hits, 120 runs and 79 RBI's in these at bats for an average of .269. (real life stats 170 games for 204 hits, 101 runs, 81 RBI's and an average of .285) The GM decided the club needed added depth to their pitching staff so traded 24 year old minor league Third Baseman John Morrissey and 22 year old minor league Catcher Sleeper Sullivan to the Brooklyn Atlantics in exchange for 37 year old veteran pitcher George Zettlein. The team released 16 minor league players to free agency. The expansion draft for the Red Stockings fans was horrible as they saw 29 players selected from their teams ranks to be sent to the new clubs. The big names that left included Right Fielder Lon Knight, Centre Fielder Mike Dorgan, and Pitcher Joe McDermott. The full list of lost players is given below The fans will hope replacements can be found in the First Year Player Draft in November. We will bring you all the news once it has been completed. |

Off Season 1881 part 1

What they get instead is an expansion draft to remove players from the club. The fans were left watching with baited breathe to confirm one of their favourites didn't get pulled away from the club. In the end the team lost a total of 28 players. The most notable losses was Short Stop Jim Snyder. The full list of players lost is given below. Hopefully the fans will see some decent replacements picked up in the first year player draft in November. We will bring you all the news of the draft once it has been completed. |

Off Season 1881 part 1
16th October 1881 Baseball fans in Detroit are happy to see the MLB moving into their fair city. The Wolverines will be the club's name and we here at the Standard are glad to welcome them and follow their progress into a hopefully bright future. The new owner of the Detroit Wolverines is Local Businessman Melvin Arthur. Arthur Has built a major manufacturing base here in Detroit and wanted to show his dedication to the city by investing in the local ball club. His employees say he will give you the time to get things right but that he expects you to use that time correctly. Another reason he wants things right first time is that he is unwilling to spend the money on doing it more than once. The team will be playing their baseball at the newly founded Recreation Park. The owner is currently running the club as he searches for a new GM. The owner did hire Manager David Estes to run the team from the dug put. Estes has no league experience but is enthusiastic to get on with the job. The players that Estes will need to manage include the following expansion draft players. The most noted acquisitions are Right Fielder Clipper Flynn from the Boston Red Caps, Second Baseman Joe Battin of the Boston Red Caps and Catcher Bill Harbridge from the Brooklyn Atlantics The team will also pick up more players through the First Year Player draft in November. We will bring you full details of this once it is complete. |

Off Season 1881 part 1
16th October 1881 We here at the Louisville Star are glad to welcome Mr Goodridge and his Louisville Eclipse baseball team to the city. The old St Louis Brown Stockings have moved here to bring big league ball to the Louisville fans. The fans are now trying to learn their new favourites from the stars that are still with the team following the expansion draft. The team will be moving into the newly built Eclipse Park here in Louisville. One person that did not move with the team to Louisville was GM Edgar Ortiz who did not renew his contract with the owner. No replacement has yet been announced by the club. The playing staff also saw a few people deciding not to make the trip to Louisville from St Louis. Firstly Tom Carey decided that he did not want to move his family and elected instead to retire from baseball. Carey spent 10 years with the old St Louis Brown Stockings after being traded from the Cleveland Blues in 1872. He picked up 1 MLB Championship medal in 1873 with the Brown Stockings along with 3 All Star appearances in those 10 years. His time in the major leagues saw him play 470 games with 442 starts. He picked up 490 hits, 298 runs and 194 RBI's for an average of .260. He was liked in St Louis and the fans will miss his playing skills now he has retired. (real life stats 536 games 645 hits, 405 runs and 271 RBI's for an average of .269) Also retiring this year is Third Baseman Ed Pinkham. Pinkham spent 11 years in the major leagues including two stints with the St Louis Brown Stockings and a stint with the Baltimore Orioles. He will be taking with him a 1873 MLB Championship Medal from the St Louis Brown Stockings along with his 4 All Star selections. He played 345 games in the big leagues including 224 starts. He picked up 239 hits, 191 runs and 119 RBI's for an average of .243. (real life stats 24 games played for 25 hits, 27 runs and 17 RBI's for an average of .263) A third former star of the Brown Stockings also decided that it was time to hang up his cleats. Third Baseman Harry Schafer has elected to end his 11 year career. In that time he spent the whole time in the St Louis Brown Stocking organisation either with the big club or on one of its minor league teams. His time also saw him gain a Championship Medal from the 1873 St Louis Brown Stockings win along with 4 All Star selections. He will also be able to show his grand children 2 Golden Glove awards that he picked up during his playing career. He made 346 major league appearances with 322 starts. He picked up 397 hits, 237 runs and 206 RBI's for an average of .274. (real life stats 367 games for 449 hits, 339 runs and 221 RBI's for an average of .272) There was a final loss for the team to suffer as a fourth major league player decided to call time on his career. Second Baseman Jimmy Wood gave 11 good years to the MLB with 3 clubs. He started out at the Philadelphia Athletics before joining the Chicago White Stockings and then finally the St Louis Brown Stockings. He has 1 Championship Medal from his time with the Chicago White Stockings along with a Golden Glove award and 4 All Star appearances. His career saw him play in 390 games with 294 starts. He picked up 330 hits, 226 runs and 158 RBI's for an average of .258. (real life stats 102 games, 162 hits, 162 runs and 83 RBI's for an average of .333) The team only lost 19 players in the expansion draft. The most notable losses were Pitcher U O'Rourke and Second Baseman John Galvin. The full list of losses is shown below. The team will be taking part in the First Year player draft. We will bring you a full report from the draft once it has been completed. |

Off Season 1881 part 1
16th October 1881 The City of New York has gained it's second MLB baseball team as a franchise was positioned in the city. The newly formed team is called the New York Gothams and they will be playing their home games in the newly built Polo Grounds stadium. The person entrusted with owning this team is Mr. Francis Allen. Allen is one of these new industrialists from Florida who are building a business around import and export links with the Caribbean Islands. He is said to be very understanding of his employees struggles and will give them all the time to get things right. While he may give them the time his is still one to count the cents to make sure he is getting his moneys worth from his employees. He currently runs the club himself but we here at the Sentinel understand an appointment of GM is not too far away. Martin Rios has been hired as the manager. He has very little experience but will make up for that in enthusiasm. The team picked up 23 players in the expansion draft. The most highly regarded arrivals included First Baseman Jim Clinton from the Cincinnati Red Stockings, Catcher Whitey Ritterson from the Brooklyn Atlantics and Pitcher Joe McDermott from the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The full draft list is shown below. Extra players will be selected from the First Year Player Draft. We will bring you all the news from this draft once it is complete. |

Off Season 1881 part 1
16th October 1881 We here at the Inquirer have decided to stick with the Athletics as our team of choice going forward and will not change to the new team in town. The fans of the Athletics have seen a couple of poor seasons from their team and are hoping change is in the air. The owner also wanted to see change and elected to not renew Manager Jose Flores' contract. There is yet to be an announcement over a replacement. The club also lost long time player Doug Allison who elected to hang up his bat and glove for a more quiet life. Allison played his full 11 year career with the Philadelphia Athletics organisation where he was a main stay of the team between 1871 and 1879 before moving down to the minor leagues. His career saw him pick up a championship winners medal in 1876 with the Athletics. He also managed 4 All Star appearances and 2 golden glove awards in a full career. He played in 410 games with 384 starts. He picked up 475 hits, 247 runs and 219 RBI's for an average of .297. (real life stats 318 games for 381 hits, 236 runs, 140 RBI's and an average of .271) The team lost 20 players through the expansion draft. The most highly rated losses included Left Fielder John Glenn, Second Baseman Andy Leonard and Second Baseman Candy Nelson. The full list is of losses are shown below. The team will try to replace these players in the first year player draft in November. We will give you all the details once the draft is complete. |

Off Season 1881 part 1
16th October 1881 Our city of Philadelphia has been granted the pleasure of having a second baseball franchise in the MLB. We here at the Telegraph have pledged our allegiance to this new team. The new team has been given the name the Philadelphia Quakers. The team will play its games at the newly constructed Recreation Park. The new owner of the Quakers is one Mr Brady Reuter. This brash Californian has always been known to ruffle a few feathers and we don't expect that to be much different in his stint as an owner in the MLB. While he might like to make waves he does it only when necessary and will allow time before he does or says these things. His fiscal policy to baseball is likely to match that of his policy in his mining operations in and around San Jose in California. He is Economical with his resources and likes to get his monies worth. The team haven't yet hired a GM but we will let you know when they do. The manager that will be selecting the team is the untried Chris Davis. We will see if he has what it takes to be a good manager. The players he will be managing include notable players like Second Baseman Joe Quest and Short Stop Bill Craver from the Boston Red Caps, Championship winning Catcher George Miller from the Chicago White Stockings and First Baseman Jim Foran and Third Baseman Levi Meyerle from the Baltimore Orioles. A full list of acquisitions is given below There will be further additions to this squad through the first year player draft and we will give you a full round up once this has been completed. |

Off Season 1881 part 1
16th October 1881 The Alleghenys have moved into town as Pittsburgh becomes the second city in Pennsylvania to gain an MLB franchise. We are looking forward to bringing you all the news from this new opportunity for the city. The team will be playing their ball in the Exposition Park. The new owner of the Alleghenys is Mr Aaron Murphy. This local man from Clifton Heights is known locally to be ruthless in his business dealings and his treatment of employees, where one wrong step can cause him to blow up and change things even to the detriment to his businesses. He also likes to take a hands on approach to finance with very little spent when it is not absolutely necessary. The owner is currently in charge as a GM has yet to be hired but Manager Silas Hartley is already in place and looking over the expansion draft players trying to shape a team. The players he is shaping into this team include Second Baseman Lou Say from the Brooklyn Atlantics, Centre Fielder Mike Dorgan from the Cincinnati Red Stockings and Third Baseman Andy Leonard from the Philadelphia Athletics. The full draft list is given below. The team will also be making a full selection in the First Year Player Draft and we will bring you all the details once it has been completed. |
