Music icons and star pitchers Buddy Holly, J.P. Richardson aka The Big Bopper & Ritchie Valens died in a plane crash near Clear Lake, IA early today.
While all 3 were known more for their music then what they did on the field, they were also accomplished ballplayers.
Buddy Holly 1st signed with the Texas Rangers in 1956, even before he released "Blue Days, Black Nights"
Among Buddy Holly's biggest hits were "That'll Be The Day", "Maybe Baby" & "Peggy Sue"
1958 was his best season on the field, getting his only All Star nod, along with the South League Mike Christian Award & a Gold Glove.

J.P. Richardson, aka The Big Bopper was a radio DJ, who also wrote hits like "White Lightening", "The Big Boppers Wedding & his best hit

17 yr old Ritchie Valens, with hits like "Donna". "Come On Let's Go" & "La Bamba" took the PCL by storm in 1958 going 28-4 with a record setting 0.98 ERA, winning the PCL Tyler Hamilton Award, the ROTY, a Glove Wizard Award & making the 1st ever PCL All star game. Ritchie's contract was purchased by Cleveland following the season.
