Top Prospects of 2023
Top 100 Prospects List Published: The season is about to start, so it's time to publish the annual Top 100 Prospects list. This year 22-year-old reliever Júlio Rocha of the Milton Brewers is the #1 prospect overall.
Here is the top 10: 1) MR Júlio Rocha, 22, Milton Brewers 2) MR Bartolo Morán, 22, Ellicott City Express 3) CF Jason Atkins, 22, Washington Senators 4) 1B Raúl Hernández, 20, Norfolk Cavaliers 5) CF Ramiro Herrera, 19, Chesapeake Blue Crabs 6) MR Narcissus Kondylis, 25, Milford Clippers 7) SP Héctor Lorenzo, 19, New Castle Colonials 8) MR Steve Bowers, 21, Chesapeake Blue Crabs 9) LF Leonard Lawson, 21, Christiana Blue Hens 10) CF José Chávez, 18, Washington Senators ![]() Here is a look back at the past #1 prospects in the DBL. 2013: OF Peter Peters, New Castle Colonials Peters made his debut in 2013, after being selected with the #1 pick in the inaugural draft, and has been a game favorite ever since. For his career Peters is .321-350-932 with a career 1548 hits. The 30-yr old has won the Silver Slugger 5 times, and has been a Glove Wizard winner 6 times and is a 9-time all-star. 2014: SP Pedro Rivera, Ocean City Tourists Pedro was drafted in the 10th round of the inaugural draft and worked his way up through the Tourists system, making his debut in 2015. He is now the ace of the Tourists staff and holds a career record of 94-62 4.18, with 1 save, in 252 games and 226 starts. He has one Glove Wizard Award and is a 3-time all-star. 2015: C Andy Kohl, Dover Generals Andy was the 2nd pick in the 2014 draft, and by the end of the season he was on the Generals roster. Two seasons later he was hitting over 40 HR's and driving in over 100 runs, something that he has done every season since 2016 (the only exception was last year when he hit 35 HR's). Kohl has been an all-star 5 times and owns 1 Silver Slugger award. For his career he is .307-342-1052 with 1403 hits. 2016: SP Brad Jones, Newark Millers Brad was the second pick in the 2015 draft out of high-school, but quickly shot through the ranks making his debut in 2017, and in 2019 he placed his name in the top pitchers of the DBL list with a 20-4 2.21 season. He has continued to pitch well, with ERA's under 3, but hasn't won more than 14 seasons. He is a big reason why the Millers are favored to win their division this season. Brad is a 2-time all-star. During his career he has made 175 starts, posting a 68-50 record with a 3.17 ERA. 2017: C Will Riley, Ellicott City Express Riley was the #1 pick in the 2016 draft out of Vanderbilt U. After a mediocore first season in the minors, the Express were looking for fresh faces to bring in the crowds and the popular Riley was called up, and all he did was win the 2017 Newcomer of the Year. Riley makes up for his below-average catching ability with a big bat, which has earned him 3 all-star appearances and the Silver Slugger award in 2021. For his career he has hit .313-169-595. He becomes a free-agent at the end of this season. 2018: C Antonio Castaneda, Chesapeake Blue Crabs In 2017 Antonio signed a minor league deal with the Blue Crabs out of the Dominican Republic, and by September of 2018 he had earned himself a roster slot with the Blue Crabs. The next season he split time behind the plate and then in 2020 took over as the full-time catcher for the Blue Crabs. Antonio has developed into one of the most feared hitters in the game, and from the looks of it, like the others two catchers on this list, he will own a Silver Slugger award in the future. Antonio made his first all-star appearance last season, as well as walking away with the Glove Wizard award. For his career Antonio is hitting .287-57-261. 2019: SP Pablo Garcia, Salisbury Ports Pablo was the #1 pick in 2018 out of Oral Roberts and after an impressive minor leauge season, Pablo was given a shot on the Ports in 2019. In 33 starts he won 14 games and has been the ace of the Ports staff ever since. Pablo is a one-time all-star and has a career 54-40 3.21 record in 132 starts. 2020: SS Anthony Lucarelli, Seaford Blue Jays 2021: SS Anthony Lucarelli, Seaford Blue Jays Anthony was the 4th pick in the 2019 draft out of high-school. Anthony broke into the big-leagues 2 years after he was drafted, with a late seaosn call-up in 2021. In his first full-season last year he struggled with the bat, but walked away with a Glove Wizard award, known for his slick glove, he should have more of those to come. For his career he has 163 hits, with a .245-6-63 line. 2022: SP Ricardo Gonzalez, Wilmington Iron Pigs Ricardo entered the DBL has an international free agent from Panama in 2019, and shortly signed on with the Iron Pigs. After spending 2 years in the Iron Pigs international complex, Gonzalez entered the minors in 2022, and by the end of 2022 he was making his debut in the Iron Pigs bullpen. A starter in the future, Gonzalez will in the opening day bullpen of the Iron Pigs in 2023. For his career Ricardo is 0-1 3.52 in 8 games. Cavaliers Prospects: If I was going to blow up the team, which I in essence did this off-season, I knew the only way to make it "fee" better was to upgrade the minor league system. Being rated the #1 system with 5 players in teh top 35, makes me feel better. Not only about what I did this off-season, but what lies ahead in the future in Norfolk. The big score this off-season was Raul Hernandez, he has the talent to a King Brock (.290-30-100) type in the future. He is 20 and working his way up the ladder. I would expect him to see some time in AA the 2nd half of the season and probably make the bigs in 2 years. I concentrated so much on pitching in the previous seasons I decided to look at the hitters. I may have done so a little to much, since our pitching seems a little thin, but looking at our active roster we only have 2 pitchers (Contreras and Estrada) that are over 26 years old, they are both 35. Our offense is young two with only Jeff Lewis (31) and Mauro Candelaria (35) over the age of 28. This team is built, maybe not financially, but talent wise for many more years of success.

Norfolk Cavaliers - Opening Day 2023
Last season it was the first year that Bill Parker, the owner, came to me and expected us to make the playoffs. Yes the first time in 11-seasons. This year he is back to wanting us to play .500 ball. Not sure what happened last year that changed his mood, but whatever it was, he seems back to normal now.
Opening Week!! This Week: 2 @ Ocean City Tourists, 4 vs Chesapeake Blue Crabs Fan Interest: 94 Projected Budget Room: $3,140,000 Owners Mood: Ecstatic Welcome to the 2023 season of the DelMarVa Baseball League. The Cavaliers are ready to go and look forward to getting back to the Championship. It has been three seasons since we won the MarVa Conference and its starting to wear on me. This team is loaded up with solid arms, and solid hitters and now we just need to put it all together. I think there are some questions, such as, can this young lineup score enough runs? One of my goals was to upgrade the lineup, but I am not sure I did that. I relied on the organization to fill the holes and not big trades. The trades I made were more for prospects and saving salary. Another big question is, can Dalton Whitaker get the job done? The biggest mistake I made was signing him to a long term deal. He has 4 more years on his contract, with an optioned 5th. I think he still has some left in his tank, but I am not sure he is going to be the closer all season. I am worried. Lets meet the opening day team: Pitching Staff (11 players, Ratings Stuff/Movement/Control out of 20) Starting Pitchers: Miguel Contreras (35 yrs - 17/17/18) Marcos Estrada (35 yrs - 16/16/20) Paul Brown (25 yrs - 19/15/12) Cornell Pearson (26 yrs - 15/14/15) Carlos Coronado (L) (24 yrs - 12/11/14) Relievers: Eric Helton (26 yrs - 12/15/16) Armando Lopez (26 yrs - 12/12/13) Jesus Ramirez (23 yrs - 13/15/10) Set-up Men: Vaughan Griffith (26 yrs - 15/8/15) Luis Martinez (25 yrs - 17/15/12) Closer: Dalton Whitaker (35 yrs - 15/10/12) If Whitaker struggles, expect to see Martinez take over the closer role. He is next in line. One reason I signed him for 5 years is I want him to retire a Cavalier, but now I am not sure I did the right thing. Bite your nose of to spite your face type of thing... If Coronado struggles as a starter he will be moved to the bullpen and Griffith, Ramirez, or Lopez will take over in the rotation. One thing that does bother me is that I only have one lefty on this team. He is going to be used as a starter, because I feel like we need a lefty start more than a lefty reliever. I do have 2 lefties in AAA ready to contribute if something goes array. The Offense (14 players, Ratings Contact, Gap, Power, Eye, K's out of 20) Catchers: Alejandro Diaz (23 yrs - 8/7/14/5/10) Mark Bolton (L) (25 yrs - 10/10/9/10/12) First Base: King Brock (L) (28 yrs - 10/15/13/10/13) Francisco Gallegos (S) (25 yrs - 9/15/8/13/7) Sergio Galvez (L) (25 yrs - 11/12/14/8/15) Second Base: Robinson Lopez (22 yrs - 11/11/4/10/15) Shortstop: Augusto Rodriguez (28 yrs - 8/10/2/5/17) Mario Reyes (S) (24 yrs - 9/11/6/12/10) Third Base: Mauro Candelaria (35 yrs - 7/8/3/14/14) Outfield: Henry Hamer (L) (22 yrs - 10/10/16/7/10) John Stewart (25 yrs - 9/13/6/8/13) Ramon Granados (28 yrs - 9/11/9/13/10) Jeff Lewis (31 yrs - 14/12/12/10/8) Wally Lambert (L) (27 yrs - 11/12/13/10/16) Injuries: SP Claudio Perez, 3-4 months, ulnar nerve irritation 3B Mario Gomez, 3 days, forearm tendinitis CF Javier Janchez, 2-3 weeks, torn ankle ligament When Gomez comes off the DL, Robinson Lopez will be shipped down to AAA. Gomez is the every day 3B and had a solid spring. Sergio Galvez will miss the first 3 games of the season, due to an altercation this spring when he bumped an umpire. The biggest question about this team is second base. We may end up playing Ramon Granados as second, despite that he has no fielding rating there, and just bring in a defensive sub. Our outfield is stacked, our infield is weak. I expected more about of Lopez and Velez this spring. It is possible that Stewart will get demoted and Lopez continue to play, but I am not sure of that just yet. Opening Day Lineup: SP Miguel Contreras RF Jeff Lewis CF Ramon Granados LF Henry Hamer (L) 1B King Brock (L) C Alejandro Diaz DH Wally Lambert (L) 3B Robinson Lopez 2B Mario Reyes SS Augusto Rodriguez ![]() (after looking at this team pic, I am thinking I need to change the undershirt or the hat... too much orange)

After playing in 161 games 2-seasons ago, I am having issues getting him in the game. Robinson Lopez will move from 3B to 2B, with Gomez taking over at 3B, and Mario Reyes will move to a back up role, which I am sure he won't be happy with either. Lopez will get his taste and if he performs he will stay. After serving his 3-game suspension Sergio Galvez was inserted into the lineup. He will play CF, sitting Ramon Granados. It was a hard choice, but in the end Brock, Lambert and Hamer deserve to play more, especially against righties. GM Notes: That was a nice start to the season. The offense is looking good, the pitching is doing well. All in all I am pleased. I will have to keep an eye on Lopez and Gomez and see how they play over the next few week. They are the ones that I will need to watch the most. Both have the talent, according to our scout, but will that translate? I need it to... Jesus Ramirez didn't fair well in his first appearance and I am not sure if that is an omen or just one of those "it happens" moments. I may end up trading him just so I can bring up one of the other guys who seem more ready. I would hate to do it, but sometimes you are pushed into a corner and have to. The 35 year olds (Contreras, Estrada, Whitaker) pitched well the frist week. I keep looking back wondering what I was thinking, I have a lot of money tied up in these 3 guys for the next 3-4 years. Hopefully they will continue to be able to get people out. He is due to have elbow ligament reconstruction surgery. A tough break for the 24-yr old who was off to a great start. The worse part of it all, Carlos was listed as "Durable"... To take Coronado's roster slot I brought up David Moran. A 23 year old lefty with great control, and I have moved Armando Lopez into the rotation. I will probably get Jesus Ramirez and Vaughan Griffith some starts as well. Vaughan will get the next start, however, since Lopez isn't quite rested enough. Other/Roster News: GM Notes: Sergio Galvez hit .278-19-79 last year and .267-15-90 in 2021. He seems to be coming around and I really expected him to start being that 30/30 man that his talent says he could be. Maybe its my fault for playing him in the OF and not at 1B or moving him around and not getting him a set-slot. I don't know, but he is off to an awful start this season so far, and I am counting on him to do so much more .194-0-3 (6-31). King Brock is hitting the ball well, but he isn't knocking anyone in. Brock is 14-39 (.359), but only had 1 HR and 3 RBI's. I need more from hm #4 man. Maybe its time to move Galvez down from the #2 slot. I may jinx myself by saying this, but Dalton Whitaker is looking good so far this year. He isn't getting the K's, that he once was, but he is getting outs. In 6 games he has 5 saves, allowing just 4 hits. I would like to see him strike out a few more guys, but I wont' hold that against him. I hope he can maintain this level of pitching for the rest of this season. Marcos Estrada has found a home in Norfolk, and is enjoying being the #2 on a rotation. Less pressure, he seems to have found his groove early and is winning over the Norfolk fans. I am going to be in a tough position when Janchez comes back. John Stewart will get sent to AAA, but then what? Janchez goes to CF, Galvez goes to first, Brock to DH and hten where does Lambert go? Lambert and Hamer will be sharing time for a little while. Hamer is doing a decent job in 11 games: .278-2-6 and Lambert just about the same .256-2-9. In a perfect world both these guys are in the lineup. Then there is Ramon Granados: .455-1-4 who is hitting the ball... talk about a log jam in the outfield... I am going to be torn on what exactly to do with these guys. He will be placed on the 11-day DL after fracturing his finger. The prelimary report says he will miss about 5 weeks. Other/Roster News: John Stewart was sent down to AAA and Javier Janchez has been activated off the DL. Janchez will take over in CF. I did shop around Wally Lambert and Jeff Lewis, but it was just more of seeing what was out there than actually wanting to pull off a deal. The one thing I am thinking about, is pulling off a deal for a LH SP. Not sure what is out there that will be make me happy, but I am exploring possibilities. With the injury to Reyes and the demotion of Stewart, I still had an slot on my roster and really needed an infielder, so Bernardo Velez was called up. I reached out to some minor leaguer, who plays 2B and SS at a 18 level and is fast, and offered him a big-league deal. Figured having a little IF defensive depth wouldn't be a bad thing. Still waiting to hear from him, which I find rather surprising. I may end up pulling out of the deal, if Velez and Lopez can fill the void. Need some i injury depth, however. GM Notes: Robinson Lopez is struggling and now I will need to make a decision about who is going to play 2B. Lopez has seen his average drop down to .200 after a 2-20 week. Velez and Grandados may start seeing some more time. I really thought Lopez was going to be a Newcomer of the Year contender. Maybe he will come around. Janchez came off the DL swining. He is 4-12 in his first 3 games, hitting 1 HR and stealing a base. He is hitting #5 in the order, as he did last season. Henry Hamer and Alejandro Diaz have switched slots in the order. Diaz is now 3rd and Hamer 6th. The reason is I wanted to break up the 4 lefties. Hamer could see himself drop to 7th, but right now I will keep him here. He is showing off his power leading the team with 4 HR's. Scratch that I am going to tinker some. Brock will hit #2 (been #4), Diaz 3rd, Hamer 4th, Janchez 5th, Gomez 6th and Lambert 7th. Lets see how that translates. Its tough to see the numbers on this offense. We are hitting the ball, just not getting runners across the plate. Last season we were #1 and #2 in Steals and HR's, this year we are 6th and 7th. Speed wise we should be better than last season, power wise, I would of thought the same. Dalton is now 6 for 8 in save opportunities. I am still wondering why I signed him to a long term deal, as he stats continue to fade... speaking of deals, with Contreras and Estrada signed till they are 39, we may end up being in trouble. Maybe I just need to stop second guessing myself, but it will be interesting to see how it turns out. This should be an interesting week with the Barons and the Senators up next for us. He will miss 4-5 months. Martinez is supposed to be my next closer. He has great stuff, throws over 100 MPH and has the makings of being a beast out of the pen. I am hoping this injury doens't hurt his progress, I have big plans for this kid. Other/Roster News: Luis Martinez has been placed on the 11-day DL, and Jimmy Jones was added to the 40-man roster and called up. Jones was a 6th round pick in the 2017th draft and is a 2.5 star player. He is 25, throws left and has a 0-0 2.45 record in 3.2 IP so far this season. I will be looking for players to fill the void in the pen, these injuries are starting to add up. We reached out to 38-yr old Pat Brooks and offered him a minimum deal. He will give us added depth and experience in our bullpen. Yoelbi Mosca signed a 1-yr deal. I am not sure if he will get much playing time, but he has been sent down to AAA. He will get some swings in and if Lopez and/or Velez faulter he will come up strictly to run and field. GM Notes: I wish had some room for Francisco Gallegos, he is tearing it up in AAA right now, in the first 16 games he is hitting .452. Lambert, Galvez or Gallegos would need to be traded to make room for him on the big-roster. Something to think about for this year if we sustain any more injuries. Paul Brown has been lights out so far this season. He has developed into an ace, he should be a nice fixture in the Cavaliers rotation for seasons to come. in 5 starts, Brown has thrown 37 innings and struck out 42, postin ga 1.95 ERA. He is 2nd on the team in K's behind Marcos Estrada. This starting rotation is really solid (yes there are still age concerns on Contreras and Estrada, but they are still better than other options out there). Eric Helton has been awesome out of the pen, making me forget the guy I traded for to get him (Yoo-hyun Kim). Helton has throwin in a team high 16.1 innings of relief. Hopefully that doesn't burn him out. Finishing April off with a 9 game winning streak makes dealing with the injuries much easier. The 3 pitchers that are on the DL were all supposed to play a big part in this 2023 Cavaliers team. I have to come to terms with Augusto Rodriguez and that fact that he will never been the Glove Wizard winner he once was. Rodriguez made 4 errors last season in 424 total chances, 7 errors in 614 chances in his best season (2020), and 3 errors in 99 innings this season. He still has a +1.0 effeciency, but his zone rating has tumbled. The random no-trade clause I threw in his contract will keep him in Norfolk for 4 more seasons. Ramon Granados has been playing 2B this season and I have been impressed with his efforts. He isn't a 2B, he is an outfielder. So far this season he has no errors in 30 chances, posting a 0.2 ZR and a 1.011 EFF. He isn't overly happy about playing 2B, but at the same time he is happy to be starting. King Brock is off to a slow start, in regards to HR's and RBI's. So far this season he is hitting .321-2-8, on pace for 13 HR's and only 52 RBI's. He has posted 92+ RBI's in the past 6 seasons, hitting 27+ HR's. It will be interesting to see how he ends up. He is playing more 1B this season than DH, maybe that is affecting his hitting. He has played 22 games at 1B this season, which is the 2nd most of his 7 yr career. He played 54 games at 1B in 2020. I blew this team up a little bit this off-season, and with the rash of injuries its starting to look like a wise decision. Without the trades and the budget freeing moves I wouldn't be able to reach out to players to fill in some of these holes created by the injuries. Its been a rough year so far. Hopefully we can catch a streak and stop losing the young pitchers. April in Review - 2023
April 2023 DBL Award Winners
Delaware Conference Monthly Awards Georgetown's Kohl Snags April Batting Title: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 31-year-old Andy Kohl put together a solid offensive month for Georgetown and was crowned April's top batter in the Delaware Conference. He batted .384 with 6 home runs, 20 RBIs and 20 runs scored. DEConf Top Pitcher for April Picked: Oliver Nelson hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice. In April the Dover starter earned a 5-0 mark in 5 starts. He threw 31 innings, struck out 26 and compiled a solid 0.58 ERA. DEConf Selects Rookie Star of the Month: Youngster Walt Martin emerged as the latest Delaware Conference Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Christiana deserved the honor, batting .223 with 4 home runs and 7 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Martin enjoy the limelight. MarVa Conference Monthly Awards Francisco Reyes Selected April's Best Batter: On the heels of a very productive April, Francisco Reyes received MarVa Conference Batter of the Month recognition today. The battle-tested first baseman hit .366 for the Ocean City Tourists and racked up 10 home runs, 25 RBIs and 16 runs scored. MarVa Conference Picks Best Starter in April: Paul Brown has made fans throughout DELMARVA Baseball League take notice over the past month with an exceptional 4-0 record. No pitcher in the MarVa Conference threw better in April, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today. In 5 starts Brown compiled a 1.95 ERA, putting up a 4-0 record, striking out 42 and tossing 37 innings. Chong Wins MVConf Rookie Award: It might be just his first year in the league, but Yong-gwan Chong is playing like he's been here before. The Annapolis first baseman rang up some lofty numbers in the last 30 days and snagged the MarVa Conference Rookie of the Month Award. In April he hit .346 with 6 home runs and 28 hits. He walked 7 times and compiled a .404 on-base percentage, scored 15 times and drove in 19. The Braves pitching doesn't seem to be as strong as it was last season, the Sixteens are starting to make some noise, but the Generals are looking to make the playoffs again. Off to a hot start, this well rounded team will have their hands full over the next few months. Northern Division: Current Leader: Newark Millers (16-8 .667 / +2.5) Projected Winner: Newark Millers (99-63 .611 / +14) The Millers are off to a 2.5 game lead and the Clippers and the Colonials are trying to find their ground. The Clippers and Colonials made some big changes over the off-season, as the Millers have developed a nice young core, including one of the games best starts. The Millers look to increase their lead in May. This division's race could end up very interesting. Eastern Division: Current Leader: Annapolis Admirals (14-11 .560 / +0.5) Projected Winner: Chesapeake Blue Crabs (94-68 .580 / +4) The Eastern division is being lead by a surprising Admirals team, as the Blue Crabs are in 4th down by only 3 games. The top 4 teams should end up in a battle all season long. This coudl be the most entertaining division in 2023. Western Division: Current Leader: Norfolk Cavaliers (21-4 .840 / +9) Projected Winner: Norfolk Cavaliers (106-56 .654 / +19) The Cavaliers are off to one of the hottest starts in DBL history, and the other teams are paying for it. Can they maintain +.800 ball? Of course not, but jumping out to a 9 game lead takes some of the pressure off. The Cavaliers have had a handful of injuries, and an injury to one of the core could really change the division race. One problem with having a young pitching staff.

Ben Sanford - Player Profile
In 2016 we selected Ben Sanford in the first round of the first-year player draft, with the 14th overall pick. Sanford was going to be our next closer, with solid potential. Rookie Ratings: Stuff 7/20, Movement: 11/14, Control: 5/15. He had the makings to be top closer, or possible top starter for years to come. In 2017 he was named the #83 prospect in the DBL. We knew he had the stuff and the movement to become the pitcher we wanted, but did he have the control? In 2018 when the new ratings came out his control potential dropped from 15 to 9, and then in 2019 it dropped even more from 9 to 6.
At this point we were unsure if he would be the star player we were hoping. I do not like to carry pitchers without a control rating under 10. Then in 2021, after deciding he wasn't a good fit with us anymore, we shipped him off to the Christiana Blue Hens. The Blue Hens wasted no time getting Sanford, now the #91 prospect in the game, on the hill. In 2021 Sanford pitched in 50 games, starting 5. He struck out 108 hitters in 84.0 innings and posted a 4-6 record, with a 3.75 ERA and 5 saves. A really solid rookie season. In 2022, the Blue Hens made Sanford a starter and he had an impressive season, winning 11 games, against 8 losses, posting a 4.19 ERA in 34 starts. In 197.2 innings, Sanford allowed only 136 hits and struck out 208. However he did walk 161, for a season ending WHIP of 1.50. In 2023, now 25 years old, Sanford is back in the rotation, the ace of the Blue Hens and is off to a red-hot start. In April Sanford started 6 games, going 4-1 and posting a 1.86 ERA. In 38.2 innings, Sanford has allowed 24 hits, struck out 33 and walked 29. His WHIP so far this year is 1.37. If Sanford, a lefty, ever gains control he could be one of the games top starters. He currently has some of the top stuff in the game (20/20), with solid movement (15/15). His control is still developing (5/6), but may never end up being better than where it is now. The lefty throws the ball hard (96-98), gets grounders (72%), and has a top-notch fastball (20/20) and forkball (18/18), and mixes in a solid sinker (12/13). I don't regret moving Sanford, in fact I am surprised at his early success. I will keep an eye on him and watch what he does for his career. His skill-set didn't fit what I look for in a player, but I always enjoy looking back on my #1 picks to see how they turn out. I don't have a great track record with the draft so when I see a success it makes feel a little better.

Brooks is 38, gets 68% grounders, throws in the low 90's and has had a pretty decent career. Going 40-42 4.44, with 29 saves in 573 games. Last season he was 2-5 4.68 with the Georgetown Sixteens, throwing 102 innings in 67 games. We will see what he has to offer the Cav's, hopefully some stability. To make room on the Cavaliers roster we decided to send down Jimmy Jones. I would rather send down Jesus Ramirez, but he doens't have any options. So Jones it is. Jones pitched in 2 games, getting 2 outs, striking out 1 and collecting 2 wins. He was the "lefty specialist" in the pen for the short time he was up here. GM Notes: The loss to the Admirals ended a nice 13 game winning streak and we played some of the better teams. Makes me feel good about this team, as long as we can stay healthy. Our bullpen is average this season and that is a little bit of a shock to me. I was expecting a lot more than this from them. Maybe its their youth, maybe its hte injuries. I just don't know. Hopefully adding Brooks will get these guys back on track. Eric Helton may be my biggest question mark out of the pen. Just last week or before I was talking about how he made me forget Kim, but his two awful outings this week are starting to make me remember. He is better than that. I am thinking it may be time to drop him from the set-up role and maybe use Brooks or Lopez in that role. We make our first visit to the Delaware Conference next week, which should be interesting. The pitchers have to take their swings, so we will see how that goes. All it means is we need to figure out who is going to play, without the DH we have another solid bat on the bench. Maybe its time for me to explore what is out there and make a deal. Part of me is really thinking about trading Janchez. I have liked him ever since I acquired him, but with is injury problems he might be expendable. Especially with the way Hamer and Granados have been hitting the ball. I'd feel better dealing him away if Galvez would hit... Pitchers hitting, means the bullpen will get more work. Hopefully, they will be rested and ready, we need to get that ERA down! Sixth in the league is not acceptable by my standards, not with a team that is built to win on pitching. Lopez was hitting .172, playing in limited games. He is most likely our future SS, so hopefully this slow start doesn't hurt his confidence. To take his slot Yoelbi Mosca will be called up. Yoelbi was hitting .304 in AAA and will play D (he is 19 @ 2B and 17 @ SS) as well as run the bases. He has only played 21 games above AA (16 this season), so we aren't expecting much from him. He isn't an offensive player, but he is a body that will hopefully give us a little stability and depth. GM Notes: Dalton Whitaker is now 10 for 13 in save opportunities and is posting a 5.79 ERA. Not what you want to see out of your closer. Over the last 4 games his ERA has gone from 2.08 to 5.79. He has given up 6 runs in 1 inning... When Luis Martinez returns from the DL he may be given the shot to be the closer. I am hoping Whitaker can get his swag back soon. Looking at the team stats is driving me crazy. I think its cool to lead the league in HR's, Runs and Average, but that is not how this team was built. The starters are hovering around a 3 ERA,b ut the bullpen is just awful. Yes 4.22 is awful in my book. Eric Helton had 2 bad outings and a good outing this week, and he will be moved from the set-up role, and will be replaced with Armando Lopez. Lopez has been lights out of of the pen so far this year. He isn't overly happy not starting, but he is impressing with his 13.1 IP and 0.68 ERA. After a rough first game, when Jesus Ramirez gave up 6 runs, he has settled down only is starting to pitch like I had hoped. He hasn't given up a run in his last 4 games and has lowered his ERA from 162.16 (after game 1) to 8.64. He has only thrown 8.1 innings. Jeff Lewis is, once again, quietly putting together another solid season. He is hitting .347, with 7 HR's and 22 RBI's, scoring 27 runs and is 6 for 7 in steals. If he didn't miss the last month last season he probably would of ended up being the MVP. If he continues his current pace it may end up being one of his best seasons of his career. This offense is well rounded, with 7 of 9 starters driving in 17 or more runs. Is that going to be a pace they can continue all season long? Overall this was a tough week, getting swept by the Braves doens't make me feel that good. The Braves are one of the best teams in the league, and if we can't win at least 1 from them at home then it might be a short post-season. The rookie report: Robinson Lopez: .172-2-8 (87 AB's) Bernardo Velez: .176-0-2 (17 AB's) Mark Bolton: .229-1-6 (25 AB's) Henry Hamer: .278-8-21 (90 AB's) Mario Gomez: .305-3-11 (118 AB's) Might be time to send down Lopez to get him back in the swing of things. He is took good off a player and I don't want this start to get in hi head. Maybe he can go to AAA and play some SS. He just needs more swings. Around the League: Standings Leaders DE Southern: Dover Generals: 20-16 (+0.5) DE Northern: Newark Millers: 23-13 (+2.0) MV Eastern: Baltimore Barons: 22-14 (+2.5) MV Western: Norfolk Cavaliers: 27-9 (+8.5) Players of the Week: Delaware: Abraham Thomas, Georgetown Sixteens, 11-23, 3 HR's, 6 RBI's, 5 Runs MarVa: Jose Lopez, Chesapeake Blue Crabs, 11-22, 2 HR's, 13 RBI's, 5 Runs Power Rankings: 1) Norfolk Cavaliers (132.0) 2) Baltimore Barons (116.0) 3) Newark Millers (113.0) 4) Milford Clippers (108.0) 5) Chesapeake Blue Crabs (105.3) News: Tony Knox of the Annapolis Admirals will miss the next 6 weeks after fracturing his finger sliding into second. Knox the leadoff man for the upstart Admirals will be missed. On the season he was hitting .283-4-19.

And when he is ready I will have to decide to send down Velez or Mosca. The advantage of keeping Mosca around is that he isn't going to ask for playing time. That is one reason I signed him. GM Notes: I am a little nervous about the bullpen, and I am not exactly sure what I need to do to make them better. Do I explore options or just ride it out? They just aren't living up to their talent abilities right now. I just don't want to end up putting too much pressure on the starting-5. Janchez has come alive with the bat over the past couple of weeks, he is looking healthy and back to his MVP form, now hopefully he can overcome his 'fragile' label and stay in the line up the rest of the season. Paul Brown has been amazing so far this year. I knew he was going to be a solid starter when I traded for him, and this could be his break out season. Being the #3 behind two of the all-time DBL greats probably helps him out. Its been nice to watch him develop over the past 4 years. The team has really seemed to come together under their new manager Arthur Ray. We have a solid staff with Ray and bench coach Bill Patterson and this team is responding. Hopefully Ray can keep them pumped up. I am ready to get back to the Championship game, its been too long. On a side note Alastair Turcotte who was the Cavaliers manager from 2014-2022, posting a 988-470 (.678) record, winning 5 Championships and 7 manager of the year awards was unable to find a job this off-season. If I was paying attention I might of kept him on for 12 more wins, oh well, hopefully he will land a job this next season. The race to 2000 hits. There are 3 players within 161 hits for 2000, all at the age of 33, and all racing to see who will reach that magical number first, and be the first player in the DBL as well: 1) Francisco Reyes (OC Tourists) - 1844 2) Kent Davis (Baltimore Barons) - 1842 3) Roberto Perez (OC Tourists) - 1839 The race to 200 victories isn't as close as the race to 2000 hits, but it will be a fun to watch, as both teammates have a shot to reach that number this season (the second would be stretch, but its possible). 1) Miguel Contreras (Norfolk Cavaliers) - 192 2) Marcos Estrada (Norfolk Cavaliers) - 183 I will continue to keep an eye on these two races as the season progresses...

He will remain on the DL for at least the next 3 months. Perez may end up developing into a reliver upon his return. I had hopes that he would be a solid starter for us in the future, but with the set-backs I am getting a little worried. Other/Roster News: Mario Reyes was activated from the DL and sent down to AAA to get some swings and get back on track. Reyes has now been flagged as "Fragile" taking a hit. GM Notes: We are looking forward to tomorrow and our first day off in 20 days. We had a nice hot streak during that time however. Outside of a rough series with the Lewes Braves we played well, winning 14 of 20. I always thought that Javier Janchez, Jeff Lewis and/or Sergio Gavlez would end up being a member of the 30/30 club, which there have only been 2 (I think) in DBL history. Janchez if he can stay healthy is probably the most likely to do it over his career, but for some reason everyone's stolen bases are down this season. Janchez is on pace for a 29/26 season, so it is possible, Lewis 26/26 pace, but he has never reached the 30 HR plateu and Galvez, has slumped and lost his starting slot, is on pace for a 19/39 season. These are the type of guys I like to have on my team, not just relying on power or speed, but a solid combination of both. Oddly enough this week we had two big run/hit games, yet we lost the next day. Such a let down, as there is nothing better than scoring a lot of runs, but when you can't follow that up with a solid performance its almost for not. Vaughan Griffith has done well as a starter, he has a 4-2 record with a 4.39 ERA, but that includes a couple of shakey starts. I am not sure if him as a starter is a long term solution, but for now I like what I am getting out of him. We do have, 22-yr old, Miguel-Angel Gonzalez in AAA who is ready to come on up. He will be the next starter called up if we suffer any injuries (knock on wood we don't). The starters struggled this past week suffering a pretty big jump in ERA, bu the bullpen stepped it up and they had a nice drop in ERA. I am not overly concerned by the starters, because these guys are solid, but seeing the ERA drop by the relievers made me feel good. I know they are better than what they had been showing. The draft is coming up next week, so its time to prepare and hopefully find a winner in this years class... May 2023 - In Review
May Award Winners
Delaware Conference Monthly Awards May's Premier Batter Announced: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 30-year-old Errol Williams put together a solid offensive month for Lewes and was crowned May's top batter in the Delaware Conference. He batted .394 with 8 home runs, 15 RBIs and 18 runs scored. Currently Williams has 9 home runs and a .348 batting average. DE Conference's Best Starter is Scott: Edmond Scott hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice. In May the Wilmington starter earned a 5-1 mark in 6 starts. He threw 44.2 innings, struck out 24 and compiled a solid 1.81 ERA. Scott has started 9 times this year, pitched 58.1 innings, fanned 34 batters and walked 21. His current record is 5 wins and 1 loss with a 2.31 ERA. DE Conference's Selects Rookie Star of the Month: Youngster Alexander Younger emerged as the latest Delaware Conference Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Dover deserved the honor, batting .268 with 2 home runs and 7 runs batted in. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Younger enjoy the limelight. Younger is hitting .269 this year with 5 home runs and 14 RBIs. He also has an OBP of .325, 7 walks and scored 18 times. MarVa Conference Monthly Awards Super Month Nets López #1 Batter Prize in MarVa Conference: When José López stepped up to the plate in May, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the MarVa Conference Batter of the Month award. The young Chesapeake right fielder posted a .420 batting average with 9 home runs, 32 RBIs and scored 22 runs. López also worked pitchers for 4 walks to post a .438 on-base percentage. López's current batting average stands at .372 and he has chalked up 13 home runs and 43 RBIs. Brown Collects MarVa Conference Pitching Award: Paul Brown has made fans throughout DELMARVA Baseball League take notice over the past month with an exceptional 5-0 record. No pitcher in the MarVa Conference threw better in May, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today. In 5 starts Brown compiled a 2.17 ERA, putting up a 5-0 record, striking out 39 and tossing 37.1 innings. So far this year Brown has made 10 starts, tossed 74.1 innings, struck out 81 batters and walked 12. His record is 9-0 with a 2.06 ERA and he has limited opposing teams to a .180 batting average. MarVa Conference Names Rookie of Month: Steve Kelly earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the MarVa Conference for last month's performance. The boyish Virginia Beach center fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level. Kelly hit .333 with 3 home runs, 13 RBIs and 18 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award. Currently Kelly is batting .269 with 5 home runs and 17 RBIs. Their philosphy of pitching pitching pitching has lead them to the lead. They have 3 pitchers in the top 6 in WAR, lead by their ace Cristobal Diaz. Their offense has been solid as well, but there are still many questions surrounding their injury prone stars Andres Salinas and Leonard Davis. Northern Division: Current Leader: Newark Millers (33-19 .635 / +2.5) Projected Winner: Newark Millers (99-63 .611 / +14) The Newark Millers continue to play well, but have to be alert for the New Castle Colonials who came on strong in May. The Millers ace Brad Jones is off to a decent start, and the success of Jiminez has helped htem maintian their lead. The Colonials are out to prove they aren't just an average team playing above their heads. Eastern Division: Current Leader: Baltimore Barons (30-22 .577 / +3.5) Projected Winner: Chesapeake Blue Crabs (94-68 .580 / +4) This division is the most intriguing with the Barons are turning up the heat in June and the Admirals slumping. This division is the tightest from top to bottom with anyone able to walk away with the title. The pre-season favorite the Blue Crabs have slumped, and the Tourists went from first to last. This will be a fun division race to watch. Western Division: Current Leader: Norfolk Cavaliers (39-19 .750 / +12.5) Projected Winner: Norfolk Cavaliers (106-56 .654 / +19) The Cavaliers played a solid month, and they look to take that success into June, despite losing their last 3 games of May. With one of the most dominating rotation in DBL history, it will be tough to chase them down. There are many questions regarding their offense and their bullpen, so they even though they are off to a hot start, they aren't the powerhouse Cavaliers of the past.

2023 Draft Preview:
First-Year Player Draft: Ellicott City, Milton, Seaford, Virginia Beach and Salisbury have the opportunity to really make some organization-altering changes today. Their GMs have been huddled around the conference room all night, playing over scenarios with the scouting staff, arguing out the merits of every possible scenario they can fathom. Who they pick might set their clubs up for ten years of quality baseball or it might mean ten years of languishing as an also-ran. BNN experts have concluded that these ten young men should be picked at the top of the draft:
1. Ron Melton, 18 year-old catcher out of high-school. 2. Ryan McCoy, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 3. Calvin Pittman, 18 year-old third baseman out of high-school. 4. Henry Rojas, 20 year-old catcher out of college. 5. Ed Arrington, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 6. Andrew Myers, 18 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 7. Steven Ray, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 8. John White, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 9. Gordon Purkis, 21 year-old shortstop out of college. 10. Ryan Sutton, 19 year-old center fielder out of high-school. The Ellicott City Express will be drafting #1 this year, breaking a 4-yr streak of #1 picks by the Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs. The Express also drafted 1st in 2016 and drafted an Silver Slugger catcher, will they duplicate that success in 2023? Only time will tell... Being the top pick in the draft puts a lot of pressure on and not all of the #1's have become the stars they were predicted... Here is a look at the past #1's and how their careers have gone... 2013 - Jorge Moran (SP), Chesapeake Blue Crabs, Columbia University Debut: 2013 Current Team: Lewes Braves Awards: Golden Arm 2019, All-Star 2016, 2019, 2020 Career: 140-70 3.09, 1 SV (301 G, 282 GS) 2014 - Gabriel Santos (SP), Norfolk Cavaliers, High School Debut: 2019 Current Team: Salisbury Ports Career: 6-8 3.59, 31 SV (186 G) 2015 - Phil Carlson (SP), Lewes Braves, High School Debut: n/a, pitched 2 years in AAA Current Team: retired 2023 Career: 70-56 4.62, 2 SV (209 G, 189 GS) 2016 - Will Riley (C), Ellicott City Express out of Vanderbilt U Debut: 2017 Current Team: Ellicott City Express Awards: Newcomer of the Year 2017, Silver Slugger 2021, All-Star 2020, 2021, 2022 Career: .315-176-615 (882 G) 2017 - Cornell Pearson (SP), Seaford Blue Jays out of Creighton Debut: 2018 Current Team: Norfolk Cavaliers Awards: All-Star 2021 Career: 60-46 3.43 (152 G, 140 GS) 2018 - Pablo Garcia (SP), Salisbury Ports, Oral Roberts University Debut: 2019 Current Team: Salisbury Ports Awards: All-Star 2021 Career: 56-45 3.29 (143 G/GS) 2019 - Shunen Koyama (SS), Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs, U of New Mexico Debut: 2020 Current Team: Viriginia Beach Surf Dawgs Career: .264-49-207 2020 - Will Hayes (3B), Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs, Farleigh Dickinson College Debut: 2022 Current Team: Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs Career: .220-6-28 (87 G) 2021 - Steve Cole (SP), Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs, High School Debut: n/a Current Team: Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs (A-Ball) Career: (A) 8-12 3.87 (28 G/GS) Prospect: #19/DBL, #2/Surf Dawgs 2022 - Brooks Carlson (SP), Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs, High Shcool Debut: n/a Current Team: Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs (A-Ball) Career: (A) 6-7 3.69 (24 G/ 23 GS) Propsect: #99/DBL, #6/Surf Dawgs ------------------------------------------------------------------ Norfolk Cavaliers #1 Pick History: And as I have said in the past, my drafting isn't the best. For the most part I let the scout do the picking, but sometimes we end up at odds and I override him. I should of marked down the ones I picked versus our scouts, but either way, a few of these guys turned out pretty good... Here is the history of my #1's drafted as the Cavaliers GM. 2013 - Arturo Ramirez (SP) Made his debut with the Cavaliers in 2017 and was impressive in 2 starts. In 2018 had his best season at 21-3 2.41 and walked away with the Newcomer of the Year award. Was traded to the Baltimore Barons in 2020, after a series of injuries. With the Barons he was injuried for the season, and lost his staminia, and is now their closer. He is a 4-time All-Star. Career: 58-17 2.83, 40 Saves (177 Games, 92 Starts) 2014 - Gabriel Santos (SP) After 1.5 seasons in the Cavaliers organization Satnos was sent to the Baltimore Barons. In 2019 he made his debut as a reliver for the Barons. He came back to the Cavaliers in the trade in which Ramirez was sent to the Barons. The Cav's were happy to have him back, but after a slow start in 2022 he was shipped off to the Salisbury Ports. He is currently on the DL and will miss the 2023 season after tearing his UCL. Career: 6-8 3.59, 31 SV (186 Games) 2015 - Joseph Kearse (1B) After failing to sign as a Cavaliers 2nd round pick in 2014, the Cav's made Kearse their first round pick a year later. Their relationship didn't last long, as he was deal to the Chesapeake Blue Crabs a year later. He made his debut with the Blue Crabs in 2018, and his currently the Blue Crabs back-up 1B/DH. Career: .247-17-121 (284 Games) 2016 - Ben Sanford (SP) Running out of options and with a lack of control the Cavaliers shipped Sanford off to the Christiana Blue Hens in 2021. The Blue Hens were happy to have him and made his debut in 2021. He has since become a solid starter despite his control problems. Career: 21-16 3.64, 5 SV (95 G, 50 Starts) 2017 - Ramon Granados (OF) After 3 seaons in the minors, Ramon got the call in 2020 and played in a career high 114 games. The past 2 seasons, he has played primarily as the back-up CF to Javier Janchez and this year began playing 2B. He is now the Cavaliers starting 2B. Career: .290-27-134 (351 games) 2017 - Bernarod Velez (2B) The Cav's second first round pick in 2017 made his big-legue debut last season with a september call-up, going 1-10. The plans were to give him the reigns at 2B this year, but a slow spring adjusted those plans. Velez is now back on the Cavaliers roster, due to injuries, and is serving as the back-up 2B and defensive replacement. Career: .196-2-7 (24 games) 2018 - Michael Heathcote (SP) Michael was traded to the Christiana Blue Hens alogn with Ben Sanford in 2021. This was a big blunder on my part, as I thoguht I was trading a different player. Heathcote made the Blue Hens and had a solid rookie campaign. He was traded to the Chesapeake Blue Crabs last season, where he is now a fixture in their bullpen. Carrer: 11-11 3.85, 6 SV (149 games) 2019 - Mark Bolton (C) After sitting in A-ball for his first 1.5 seasons, I decided to trump my coaches and moved Mark to AAA, where he hit the ball all over the place. In 2021, back in AAA, he had a solid season, which made me think twice about signing John O'Donegon to a long-term deal. After another decent start in 2022, and the emergence of Alejandro Diaz, John O' was made expendable. After a 2022 September call-up it was obvious that he could handle the bigs. John O was traded and Bolton was given the back-up slot in 2023. A decent catcher, who makes a solid back-up combo with Diaz. Career: .273-2-14 (37 games) 2020 - Michael Russell (OF) After 2 seasons in the Cavaliers organization Russell was shipped off to the Salisbury Ports, where is currently in A-ball. He started the season in AA, but a slow start sent him back down to A. Career: A-ball: .262-44-184 (348 games) 2021 - Ben Gibbs (2B) Ben is now in his 2nd season A-ball and isn't playing as much as he'd or I would like. He hasn't been very impressive during his 2 seasons, but we still hold faith that he could end up making the big-league roster as a back-up one day. Career: A-ball: .224-9-81 2022 - Doug Phelps (SP) Phelps is currently on the mend after rupturing his ulnar collateral ligament, after making 8 decent starts in A-ball last season. He will be returning to the mound in 3 weeks and I am anxious to see how he returns. The biggest question mark regarding Phelps is his velocity, who is a righty who throws in the high 80's. Carrer: A-Ball: 3-4 4.50 (8 starts) Ben Gibbs and Michael Russell are looking to be busts, and the jury is still out on Doug Phelps. I am looking forward to his return from the DL and to see how he recovered from missing a year of ball. Based on his latest development report its not looking all that great, as his potential dropped from 2.5 to 2.0... On to the 2023 draft... The Cavaliers will be drafting 21st in the first round, and then we have the 7th pick in the 2nd round, and the 13th and 20th in the 3rd. Hopefully we can some solid players with those 5 picks...

It wasn't very deep, but I am thinking our #1 and #2 picks might be able to make something out of themselves. It will be interesting to see how this group pans out. I left most of the picks up to my scout Alexis Shelton, but I always like to take a one or two of my own to see how I do... I do have a feeling it will be tough to sign all 5 of our top picks however.

Is that a sign that the Apocalypse is upon this team? What is going on, that just doesn't happen. Its not like he pitched poorly, but the offense was stagnant this week and the bullpen wasn't much better. Pat Brooks faulted twice this week. Hopefully that isn't a sign of things to come for him. He started off well, but with his lack of stuff it could be a sign he isn't any good anymore. I don't know, maybe I need to step away from the panic button I do have a big division lead. I have to admit I am surprised by the amount of long-balls this team is hitting, with 6 players with 9 or more long-balls. I am curious to see how this will pan out with the amount of hits we took on our player development over the past month. Janchez has become a team leader despite his injuries. He has been torrid since his return from the DL, putting up 9 HR's and 30 RBI's. If he can stay healthy he is going to be involved in the Silver Slugger talks once again this season. Now we just need to get a) Contreras back on track and b) get the bullpen under control, and then I may feel better about this team. With the player dev report the +4 bullpen ERA I am not sure what to think. Maybe its time to explore some options to bolster this pen. its not quite time to hit the panic button.... Smith couldn't find any suitors in 2022 and ended up sitting out the season, he returned this year with a minor league deal with the Brewers in hopes to make a return to the DBL, he pitched 2 games in 2021 for the Richmond Cardinals and 14 in 2019 for the Baltimore Barons.

Our final offer was $575,000. #4/88) Byron Callahan (3B), Signed: $180,000 -Status: Agreed to terms sent to A-ball #5/108) Chance Boone (CF), Signed: $200,000 -Status: Was happy with our bump and signed on for $200,000. he will be sent down to A-ball. With Whitaker breaking off talks I have a little more money to spread around, so if Jackson comes back to us I will be able to give him a bump as well. I wasn't surprised by how quickly Whitaker broke things off, but I was surprised by his demands. Jackson and Lewis I still hold hope, but we will see. GM Notes: Nothing drives me crazier than getting shut-out and then scoring a lot of runs, or vice-versa. I know the pitchers are different, but how can a team that slugs out 22 hits, get 4 the day before? Just drives me mad. And on top of that, 2 shut-outs in the same week? UGH. Where did the offense go? Galvez is starting to swing the bat better, which just means I am going to have to find him some more AB's, which isn't all that easy. Maybe its time to look into pulling off a deal, moving Lambert or Galvez, my only worry is injuries. If I lose a Janchez or a Brock, I'd rather have these guys. Makes pulling off a trade a lot harder. I am ready for a blow-up week. I want to see 5 wins! Looks like our offense had its moment, our bullpen has had theirs and our starters there, now if we could just put it all together for a few months, like till October i will be happy. Haven't hit the panic button just yet, but watching the other teams starting to wheel and deal is making me think. The Cardinals are ready hot, and they brought in one of the top lead-off men in the game. They have closed the gap on us, so the warning signals are there. Do I think they can catch us? Hmmm. No, but I guess an injury or a big slump can change that. I thought we were playing above our heads when we started off so hot, but the last couple of weeks have shown me some reality. Maybe we aren't that good, maybe we will have some struggles. I don't, but it is my job to look at this team and make sure we have the right 25 players out there to win us a title. Draft Pick Information: #1/21) Jimmy Lewis (SS), Signed: $1,700,00 -Status: Signed on for $1.7 and will be sent down to A #2/33) Boyd Martin (SP), Signed: $600,000 #3/62) Jim Jackson (C), Demand: $320,000 - broke off -Status: Wasn't happy with our bump to #320,000 so he broke off the dealings. #3/68) Carl Whitaker (SP), Demand: $2,400,000 - broke off #4/88) Byron Callahan (3B), Signed: $180,000 #5/108) Chance Boone (CF), Signed: $200,000 Not overly disappointed about losing out on Jackson and Whitaker. Jackson I was going to bump up a bit, since Witaker feel through, but he wasn't hearing it. Oh well. Now its time to move on with what we have and I am happy with the guys we signed. I am curious to see how Martin and Lewis play this season and develop. GM Notes: A 5-0 week, I really needed that. I think the rest of the staff could hear me exhale. It was nice to see the starters pitch so well, and the bullpen barely got any work. The way they have pitched as a whole, that is probably a good thing, lol. This offense is growing on me, very steady, no one superstar, just a bunch of solid 4* players. I think I posed this question last season after losing in the playoffs, but "can we win without a superstar offensive player?" The last Championship we had, we had a lineup of stars, so that does make me worry a bit. Bernardo Velez is hitting .208-2-7 and Mario Gomez is about to return from the DL. I need to decide to send Velez or Yoelbi Mosca down. Mosca signed to give me speed and D off the bench, Velez could go down to AAA and get more swings. Mosca won't hit much, but Velez I have about a week to think about it. I would like to see Miguel Conterars have another nice start. He has been so dominating over the past few years, his mini slump has surprised me. Since Contreras joined the Cavaliers in 2018 he has only had one season where he had more than 4 losses. He lost in 9 in 2021. He has 4 so far this season with an ERA over 4. His highest ERA in his 6 Norfolk seasons? 2.60. Hopefully he starts to warm up, as he has done so many other times. He seems to be a solid 2nd half starter, but at 35 yrs old is that going to change? We stay at home for 6 more games, with three of those being against the Cardinals. Yes we have 12 game lead, but the Cardinals haven't given up yet and they have a quality team that could take us down. These 3 games will be a nice tell of where we stand against them. They face off against Brown, Pearson and Griffith, which will make the 3 game set a little more challenging. We are happy to have him back. Bernardo Velez was sent down to AAA after slumping with the Cav's. Velez hit .196-2-7 in 56 AB's. He will be listed as the starting 2B for our AAA team. Hopefully to get his swing back. GM Notes: A 4 and 2 week isn't anything to be disappointed about, but losting 2 of 3 to the Cardinals really hurts. Playing the one team that could chase us down this season, and losing 2 of 3 really makes me think. They roughed up Pearson and handed Brown his first loss of the season. Did the Cav's just not want it bad enough? Did they take the Cardinals too lightly? Are they better than we give them credit for? We play them again and hopefully we will perform better, losing to them doesn't make me too happy that is for sure. Ramon Granados has been a surprise at 2B, he isn't going to garner any all-star votes for his defense, but he has been acceptable over there. Not bad for a position he doesn't know. In 43 games, he has had 159 total chances and made 5 errors. He has a .969 fielding PCT, but a -3.2 zone rating. The more he plays the better he should get it, at least that is what I am hoping. It'd be hard to take his bat .308-6-25 out of the lineup right now. I am starting to get a feeling that we are going to run off with the division soon. Things seem to be getting better, the offense, the pitching, the bullpen, I don't know but just getting that feeling. I am still thinking about exploring a deal to bring in a solid bullpen pitcher, but I am not sure how that will work, we don't have a whole lot of spare money to fill holes. So if I make a move for a veteran, it will most likely include someone who is making money. Problem is with this team we really don't have a whole lot of players that are making the big bucks. I do have a decision to make for 2024 regarding Marcos Estrada and his team option. I could try to resign him for a few more years, or I could let him walk, or pay him the $22,800,000 he wants. I am not sure if it will be worth putting that much financial strain on the club, espeically with Miguel Angel Gonzalez ready to take over a rotation slot. Something to think about for sure. I won't be able to extend him this year, so maybe the idea would be accept the team option and trade him if he doesn't fit in financially. I will not move him during the 2023 regular season however and if I can make it work and sign him post 2024 and his team option I would like to. He did however take a little development hit during spring training, which concerns me, as he is 35 yrs old. Pat Brooks hasn't done what I had hoped he would and I may be looking to dump him very soon and just go with one of the young guys like Jimmy Jones who did well in his short time with us earlier this season. Brooks has pitched in 10 games, 12.2 innings and has posted a 7.11 ERA and he seems to be getting worse. So I do have some decisions to make over the next month before the trading deadline comes and goes. Ultimately I want to win the title this year and I might have to pull off a bold move to make that happen. I have pieces and prospects... June 2023 - In Review
June Award Winners
Delaware Conference Monthly Awards DEConf's #1 Batter Announced: Tom Anderson battered Delaware Conference pitchers all June and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award. "I've been around DELMARVA Baseball League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 27-year-old Anderson told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month." In 27 games, Anderson hit .336 with 7 home runs, 26 RBIs and scored 21 runs. Thus far this year Anderson is batting .315 with 14 home runs, 58 RBIs and 51 runs scored. ** this is the Tom Anderson I thought I acquired 2 years ago. He was solid for me, but not this good. I am guessing a change of scenery did him good... Randolph Takes DEConf Top Starter Trophy: Veteran Paul Randolph put together quite a successful stretch in June for the Wilmington Iron Pigs, earning himself the Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month award. Randolph racked up a 6-0 record in 6 starts, posting a 1.04 ERA over 43.1 innings and striking out 25. For the season Randolph has compiled a 10-1 record with a 2.25 ERA. DEConf Selects Rookie Star of the Month: Javier Reyes's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Seaford third baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month. In June he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award. During the month he hit .250 with 6 doubles, no triples and 2 home runs. Reyes also scored 10 times and drove in 16 runs. Reyes on the season is hitting .244 with 2 home runs. His stats include 27 RBIs and 18 runs scored. MarVa Conference Monthly Awards Molinero Crowned Batter of the Month in June: When Alberto Molinero stepped up to the plate in June, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the MarVa Conference Batter of the Month award. The young Chesapeake center fielder posted a .361 batting average with 12 home runs, 37 RBIs and scored 28 runs. Molinero also worked pitchers for 6 walks to post a .388 on-base percentage. Molinero is hitting at a .285 mark this season. His stats show 23 home runs, 67 RBIs and 59 runs scored. He has played 78 games for the Blue Crabs. MVConf Relief Ace Kelly Named Best Hurler: Rick Kelly has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in June and stole away with the MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month award. The Ports bullpen ace collected 10 saves and 13 strikeouts in 13.2 innings, holding the opposition to a .224 average and posting a 0.66 ERA and a 1-0 record. This year Kelly has made 33 relief appearances and saved 20. His record is 2-3 with 27 strikeouts in 33.2 innings and a 2.67 ERA Marquee Month for Chong, Top MVConf Rookie: In June, Yong-gwan Chong knocked MarVa Conference pitchers all over the ballpark all month long and put up numbers good enough to be voted the Rookie of the Month. Last month the 28-year-old Annapolis first baseman played in 23 games and hit .333 with 7 doubles, no triples and 4 home runs. Chong also scored 11 times and drove in 19 runs. This year Chong is hitting .333 with 77 hits, 16 home runs, 53 RBIs and has scored 38 runs. A pitching strong team, the Braves look to have a handle on the division, despite having 6 players on the DL. If the Sixteens are going to strike, now is the time. The Sixteens are hoping for more out of hteir starting staff the next 3 months. Northern Division: Current Leader: Newcastle Colonials (49-31 .613 / +3.5) Projected Winner: Newark Millers (99-63 .611 / +14) The New Castle Colonials came out of now where to take over 1st in the Northern Division and now have a 3.5 game lead. The Colonials have made some very wise pick ups, including acquiring silver slugger Cluade Bond, who gives them one of the top 3-4 hitter combo's, along with Peter Peters, in the game. Can they hang on and get back to the post season? There is still half a season to play so its anyones guess. Eastern Division: Current Leader: Chesapeake Blue Crabs (47-33 .588 / +1) Projected Winner: Chesapeake Blue Crabs (94-68 .580 / +4) This division is looking like a two team battle between the Barons and the Crabs. The Crabs have turned up the heat lately taking over 1st this past week. They have a strong young team and are being lead by 2nd year player Alberto Molinero who is having a career year. The Barons have the pitching, but have struggled since all-star Mike Taylor went down to injury. Western Division: Current Leader: Norfolk Cavaliers (57-21 .731 / +12) Projected Winner: Norfolk Cavaliers (106-56 .654 / +19) The Cavaliers slowed a little in June, but still hold a formidiable lead in the Western. Question about the team still surround, as the young up start Cardinals aren't going to give up. One bad week and this whole race could change. The Cardinals went 19-8 in June, so the Cav's better not count them out.
