July 20th, 2028 Prepare for the Trade Deadline
We are 13.5 out of the NL Central lead and the Cardinals are showing no signs of letting up. The Cards are on pace for 102 wins, we would need a 55-11 finish to likely even come close. Realistically it would take 50 wins and we are not there.
In the wild card, we are 5.5 games out, but we would have to pass 5 teams including 2 in our own division. 90 wins is what is likely going to be needed to get the wild card spot thus we would need to go 43-23, or a .650 pace down the stretch. Again this appears to be too much of a stretch. We are sellers. We have some young players we can build around. Perez has pitched into the 7th in all of his last 8 MLB starts. 1B Roberto Cortez was the only multi-hit Red with 2, a Double and Single. St Louis Cardinals 1B Armando Marin goes 4 for 5 with 2 HRs and 6 RBIs in a 9-4 win over the Braves. The 23 year old Marin is hitting .334 with 20 HRs and 79 RBIs in 95 games for the Cardinals. Texas Rangers 3B Juan Gonzalez goes 3 for 4 with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs in a 17-3 win over the White Sox. The 27 year old Gonzalez is hitting .326 with 36 HRs and 89 RBIs in 94 games for the Rangers. The Cincinnati Reds have traded C/3B Brock Taylor and MR Lopahin Uglichin to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for SP Zacarias Lopez, 3B Joe Spivey and LF Tony Brooks. The 33 year old Taylor was hitting .196 with 14 HRs and 35 RBIs in 76 games for the Reds while the 20 year old Uglichin is 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA in 9 (R) games for the Reds. August 1st, 2028 Cincinnati Reds Stats and Musings
The Reds were 27-26 over the past 60 days and have improved in most areas except the bull pen. We are 11-21 in 1 run games which probably means the bullpen, A couple of key blows to the relief core where the injuries to Gabriel Miranda and Robbie Coleman.
Roberto Mora and George Wheeler both look MLB ready, but who goes down to AAA, it is going to be tough enough to find a demotion when Larry Baker comes back in two weeks. We are not going to make any changes here.
The relievers are all performing pretty well, but maybe not as well as when the pen was healthy. We will keep Ray Hicks finished a rehab assignment in AAA and maybe we rushed him a bit, plus I want to see what Mike Williams and his 100 mph fastball can do in the Majors, Hicks to AAA, Williams to the Reds.
With the trade of Brock Taylor, Stan Shelton can pick up the extra innings and give Jesus Lopez the day off. We will let Martinez come up in September unless an injury occurs to Shelton or Lopez.
For what ever reason, MGR BJ Wagsis rarely plays Shelby Heath ( 1 start and just 27 at bats in 60 days since the trade) despite his numbers before coming to Cincinnati. I am sending Heath to AAA and promoting Albert Gonzalez.
As much as I would like to promote Steve Garc, who goes down? I would think that Garc will be part of the Reds 2029 roster, but for now he has to be patient and continue to rip up AAA pitchers. |

SS Jeff White stole his 15th base of the year. Reds SP Manny Perez allowed 5 runs on 8 hits with 5 strikeouts over 5.1 innings in the start. MR John Bayley (2-1) got the win. Cincinnati Reds C Jesus Lopez goes 3 for 5 with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs in a 9-5 win over the White Sox. The 26 year old Lopez is hitting .314 with 35 HRs and 84 RBIs in 85 games for the Reds. Minnesota Twins 2B Juan Benitez tagged HR #300 in a 5-4 win over the Cubs. The 32 year old Benitez is hitting .264 with 19 HRs and 50 RBIs in 59 games for the Twins. August 4th, 2028 Minnesota 4 Cincinnati 3 (13) The Twins scored 1 in the 1st, the Reds tied it in the bottom of the 2nd, then nothing until the top of the 13th with the score tied 1-1, The Twins scored 3 runs in the top half of the 13th including 4 of their 21 hits in the game. The Reds gave it their all, scoring 2 runs themselves and stranding a runner at 3rd when David Reed struck out for the 3rd out. Reds SP Josh Clark allowed 1 run on 10 hits with 6 strikeouts before leaving after 6.2 innings. MR Paco Salazar (0-5) took the loss. The Reds got HRs from RF Roberto Gonzales with his 8th and hot hitting OF Juan Martinez with his 38th. LF Billy Anderson swiped his 15th SB. The Reds offense amounted to 2 Doubles, a SIngle and 2 walks. September 22nd, 2028 Cincinnati 10 St Louis 9 After taking a 5-0 lead with a 3 run bottom of the 3rd, the Cardinals gave up a 8 run 6th inning to the Reds and the Reds took over from there.
