Houston--The Pittsburgh Lumber Company awoke from a slumber to rally in the second game of the National League Championship Series Saturday night.

The Pirates scored three times in the sixth inning off Houston starter Don Wilson and wound up posting a 4-3 victory. The win evened the NLCS at two games apiece.

The Astros jumped out an early 3-1 lead after just three innings. Astro left fielder Carlos May delivered the key blow, a two-run homer off Pirate right-hander Bob Moose. May has hit three home runs in the playoff series.

After scoring just one run in the first 14 innings of the playoffs, Pittsburgh finally struck gold in the sixth. Bill Buckner led off the frame with a single, his third hit of the game. After a fielder's choice ground ball by Willie Stargell, Richie Hebner and Al Oliver each singled to load the bases.

Matty Alou and Milt May both followed with RBI base hits to tie the game. Oliver then scored what proved to be the winning run when Fred Patek's slow roller ground out plated the Pirate outfielder. Wilson finally ended the inning by striking out Moose.

Houston threatened in the eighth when John Mayberry doubled off reliever Bob Veale with one out. After a Carlos May ground out, Stargell made a spectacular diving catch of a drive off the bat of Doug Rader to end the inning.

Dave Giusti pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to presevere the Pittsburgh victory.

Following a day of travel, the playoff series will resume Monday at Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium. Luke Walker will start for the Pirates against Larry Dierker for the Astros.

Arlington, Tex.--The law-enforcing Texas Rangers have always been known for last-minute heroics. That wasn't the case in Monday's American League playoffs.

Texas fell one run short during a three-run ninth inning and lost to Baltimore 4-3. Thus, the Orioles completed their three-game sweep of the Rangers and advance to their second Joy in Mudville World Series in the past three years.

Both starters--Doyle Alexander for Texas and Ken Holtzman for Baltimore--pitched well. The Orioles managed to score three runs off Alexander in the fourth. Dick Allen hit a solo home run and Davey Johnson cracked a two-run shot.

Allen hit his second home run in the ninth off Ranger reliever Joe Grzenda. It turned out that Baltimore needed the run more than it thought.

Holtzman gave up a leadoff home run to former Oriole Don Baylor to begin the ninth. After striking out Graig Nettles, Rusty Staub laced a single on a 3-2 pitch.

Holtzman was pulled from the game in favor of right-handed reliever Fred Beene. Hal McRae struck out, but Beene walked Darrell Porter. With the tying run at the plate, left-hander Pete Richert entered the game to face left-handed batting Chris Chambliss.

Texas won this battle as Chambliss cleared the bases with a double into the right-center field gap. Porter slid in just ahead of the relay throw home, and the Oriole lead was 4-3.

With Grzenda's spot in the batting order due, Texas sent pinch-hitter Jay Johnstone to the plate. Richert saved his second game of the playoff by striking out Johnstone on a 2-2 pitch.

Baltimore, losers in last year's ALCS to Oakland in five games, moves on to face either Pittsburgh or Houston in the JIM World Series.

Davey Johnson, just a .247 hitter during the regular season, won the ALCS Most Valuable Player Award. Johnson hit .417 with a home run and five RBIs during the playoff series.

Pittsburgh, Penn.--While the National League Championship Series venue shifted from the Astrodome to Three Rivers Stadium, the game result reverted to game one's outcome.

The Houston Astros routed the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-2 to take a two games-to-one lead in the NCLS. Houston's victory harkened back to its playoff-opening 9-0 romp. Pittsburgh won game two 4-3.

Monday's game got away from Pittsburgh quickly. The Astros scored twice in the first inning and once more in the third. Then came a five-run outburst in the fourth. Cesar Cedeno provided the exclamation mark with a three-run homer off Pirate starter Luke Walker.

As in the series opener, Pittsburgh also played shoddy defense. This time around, the Pirates committed three errors and allowed three unearned runs. Short stop Fred Patek, normally sure-handed and a Gold Glove candidate, made his second error of the playoffs.

Houston hopes to close out the NLCS in Tuesday's game four in Pittsburgh. Two seasons ago the Pirates rallied from a 2-1 deficit against the Los Angeles Dodgers and advanced to the JIM World Series.

Tuesday's contest will be a game one rematch of Pirate right-handed ace Dock Ellis and the Astros' Ken Forsch.

Pittsburgh, Penn.--The Pittsburgh Pirates have been down this road before.

A day after getting shut out 9-0 by Houston, the Pirates pounded Houston 5-1 Tuesday at Three Rivers Stadium to force a deciding game five in the National League Championship Series.

Two years ago Pittsburgh found itself in this very same situation. Back in 1970, the Pirates rallied from a two games-to-one deficit against Los Angeles and wound up in the Joy in Mudville World Series.

In Tuesday's victory, ace Dock Ellis was at his Cy Young candidate-best. The right-hander scattered nine hits and held Houston at bay all day. It was a complete turnaround from his poor performance in the playoff opener.

Meanwhile, the Pirate offense broke out its thunder. Willie Stargell, the odds-on favovite to win the National League Most Valuable Player Award, cracked a first-inning home run off Astro starter Ken Forsch.

Pittsburgh center fielder Al Oliver hit a pair of home runs, one off Forsch in the sixth and one off reliever Larry Gura in the eighth to put the game away.

The fifth and final game is Thursday at Houston's Astrodome. Pittsburgh's Bob Moose (1-0) and Houston's Don Wilson (0-1) will rematch from their game two confrontation.

In real-life baseball a new force emerged in the Bronx back in 1973. His name was George Steinbrenner. Could it be coincidence that the New York Yankees will be under new management for the '73 Joy in MUdville season?

With Tim L.'s brother Todd has bowing out of the JIM, a young, vibrant force is taking his place. His name is Brandon N. He will run both the Yankees and the San Francisco Giants.

The Yankees are coming off a 105-win season in which they finished second to the World Series-bound Baltimore Orioles. New York features one of the top pitching staffs in the game.

Meanwhile, the Giants struggled to finish fifth in the National League West. While San Francisco possesses some aging stars, it also holds the No. 6 overall pick in the June amateur draft.

Best Game I ever attended: While playing baseball in college, I was apart of an 18 inning, 1-0 ballgame. After multiple chances, the Lewis Flyers finally were victorious in the bottom of the 18th inning. This was my first collegiate start; therefore I was taken out for a pinch hitter in the 10th inning. The best game I ever witnessed was Kerry
Wood’s 20-strikeout game. I came home from school to see the back end of what turned out to be amazing. The Astros did not have much of a chance that day. Nice play, Kevin Orie.

Another quirky tidbit or fact you would like to share: One of my best friends from high school is the Cubs reliever, now minor leaguer, Billy Petrick. It was a great experience playing in front of a dozen pro scouts every time he took the mound. Hearing stories about big league players and coaches is also pretty fun to hear.

Houston--The battle of the bullpens went to the Houston Astros and along with it came the National League pennant.

The home-standing Astros scored six runs off Pittsburgh Pirate relievers over the course of their final two at-bats to post an 8-3 victory. Thus, Houston advances to the Joy in Mudville World Series for the first time.

Bidding for their second World Series appearance in three seasons, the Pirates scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead. The first run came on Willie Stargell's second home run of the playoffs.

Houston, however, rallied for three runs off Pirate reliever Charlie Hough in the last of the seventh. The rally featured a hit batter, a walk, two singles and a costly error. Short stop Fred Patek committed the miscue, his third error of the playoffs after making only seven all season long.

The Astros then put the game away with a three-run eighth. Astro left fielder Carlos May knocked in two of the runs with a single off Pirate left-hander Bob Veale.

Jack Billingham pitched one scoreless inning and earned the win for Houston. Hough, who relieved Pirate starter Bob Moose, took the loss.

May earned the NL Most Valuable Player Award. He hit .368 with three home runs and eight RBIs in the five-game series.

Houston will open JIM World Series play at Baltimore against the American League champion Orioles.

Baltimore--Saturday's game one of the 1972 Joy in Mudville World Series was anything but textbook baseball.

In a contest that featured three errors by the winners, Baltimore took the Series opener 6-5 on a bases-loaded walk.

The American League champion Orioles built a quick 5-0 lead off ineffective Houston starter Ken Forsch. Baltimore's Ken Singleton homered off Forsch, a 30-game winner during the regular season. Forsch was forced to pitch on short rest when scheduled starter Larry Dierker woke up Saturday morning with a bout of the flu.

Much of game one featured flu-like symptoms. Case in point, the Astros rallied for four runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of an error by second baseman Davey Johnson. Jimmy Wynn struck the key blow with a two-run homer off Oriole starter Tom Seaver.

Two innings later, Houston tied the game when Joe Morgan homered off Seaver into the right field bleachers.

From there, the game settled into a battle of bullpens. The Astros had a chance to take the lead with two runners on in the eighth. However, hard-throwing Nolan Ryan struck out Wynn to end the threat.

Houston's Jack Billingham, a former reliever-turned-starter this season, held Baltimore scoreless for two innings before giving way to closer Mike Marshall.

Baltimore finally broke through in the 10th inning. Singleton and Dick Allen led off with consecutive singles. Allen's hit was his fourth of the game.

Following a successful sacrifice bunt by Darrell Evans, the right-handed Marshall intentionally walked left-handed hitting Johnny Grubb to load the bases.

The strategy failed when Marshall forced in the winning run with a fastball that was high to Johnson on a 3-2 pitch.

Fred Beene earned the win in relief while Marshall took the loss.

Game two is Sunday afternoon at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium. Left-hander Jon Matlack will start for the Orioles. Right-hander Larry Dierker is likely the Houston pitcher.

[Joy in Mudville]

Baltimore--Sometimes working overtime on a Sunday can have its benefits. It certainly did for the Houston Astros.

The Astros scored five times in the 11th inning to post an 8-3 victory in game two of the Joy in Mudville World Series. The Houston win ties up the Series at one game apiece.

By the game's end, both teams' rosters were nearly depleted. Right-handed reliever and author Jim Bouton earned the win. Baltimore left-hander Pete Richert suffered the loss.

Houston took a 2-0 lead on a first-inning double by Cesar Cedeno off Oriole starter Jon Matlack.

Baltimore catcher Bob Boone homered in the second off Houston starter Larry Dierker to slice the lead to one run.

Neither team then scored until the Orioles took a 3-2 lead in the seventh on an RBI-triple by Darrell Evans and a followup single by Johnny Grubb.

However, Houston tied the game in the eighth when left-handed hitting John Mayberry singled home a run with two outs to chase Matlack from the game.

Baltimore wasted an opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Evans tripled for a Series-record second time. However, Bouton pitched his way out of the jam. After intentionally walking Grubb, second baseman Joe Morgan snared pinch-hitter Terry Crowley's hot smash and fired home to nail the sliding Evans at the plate. Bouton then got pinch-hitter Dave May to ground into a force play.

Then came the Houston 11th. Richert opened the inning by walking Cedeno. After a sacrifice bunt by Carlos May, catcher Johnny Edwards singled Cedeno to third.

Richert exited and National League castoff Marty Pattin took over on the mound. Doug Rader greeted the right-hander with a single that plated what proved to be the winning run.

Pattin retired pinch-hitter Marty Martinez on a pop out for the second out. Next came the Astro assault. A throwing error by Pattin, an RBI-single by Morgan, a passed ball and another RBI hit by Jimmy Wynn procuded the final result.

Dennis Menke, making his first start of the Series, had three hits and scored three times from the leadoff position for the Astros.

Now tied, the Series shifts to Houston for game three Tuesday at the Astrodome. Houston will start right-hander Don Wilson. Lefty Ken Holtzman will pitch for Baltimore.

[Joy in Mudville]

With the 1972 Joy in Mudville World Series tied at one game each and the venue shifting to Astrodome, one question has popped into baseball fans' heads: Will Ken Forsch start game three for Houston?

Normally you'd never see a pitcher start the Series opener and then come back and start game three. However, since Astro ace Ken Forsch lasted just three innings in game one, it's possible the right-hander just could be given the nod for the third game.

Factor in that Forsch only threw 45 pitches in game one, and he also picked up an extra day of rest with the Series moving to the Lone Star State. By starting Forsch, a 30-game regular season winner, in game three, Houston would also assure itself of having him for either game six or seven if needed.

If Forsch is held back to pitch game four, then right-hander Don Wilson will start against Baltimore in the first Series game ever held indoors. Wilson pitched the deciding game in the National League playoffs against Pittsburgh.

Bleary Bullpen
Both the Astros and Orioles are thankful for the day off. It will give each team an opportunity to rest its weary bullpen.

Back-to-back extra-inning games have taken their toll on the relievers. Houston used five pitchers in each of the first two games. Baltimore used five in its game one victory and seven in its game two loss.

Menke or Metzger?
Another question facing Houston is whether to start Denis Menke or Roger Metzger as its game three short stop.

Metzger, acquired from the Chicago Cubs in a trade, started the Series opener but went hitless in four at-bats. Metzger batted .333 in the NL playoffs.

Meanwhile, Menke--who lost his starting job during the regular season to Metzger--went 3-for-6 with three runs scored in game two of the Series. Clearly, Menke provided a spark to the Astro offense.

Offensive Series
Pitchers are most likely happy to see the Series shift to the inside atmosphere of the Astrdome. Offense has been at the forefront of the Fal Classic's first two games.

Baltimore has lashed out double figures in hits in both games, while Houston has averaged 6.5 runs per contest.

Each team has hit a pair of home runs in the Series. Third baseman Darrell Evans hit two triples in game two for the Orioles.

Despite pitching just three innings in the Series' first game, Astro pitcher Ken Forsch even collected a hit.

Hot Stove League
With the Series soon to bring down the curtain on the '72 season, rumors are already starting to fly around the Hot Stove League.

Insiders have Cincinnati looking to move some of its veteran players and begin a youth movement around the Reds' core of All-Stars such as Johnny Bench and Pete Rose.

With offense aplenty, Texas is seeking a high-profile pitcher to take the Rangers to the next level.

New management in both the New York Yankee and San Francisco Giant front offices appears to be ready to improve both teams' weaknesses.

All in all, it should be an interesting and entertaining off season.

Houston--Playing the first indoor game in Joy in Mudville World Series history, Houston's Don Wilson went out and played.

The Astro right-hander held Baltimore to just six hits and struck out seven as Houston breezed to a 4-1 victory in game three. The Astros hold a two games-to-one lead in the Series.

Houston took a 1-0 lead on a third-inning solo home run by third baseman Doug Rader. Two innings later, the Astros added to their lead on a sacrifice fly by Denis Menke.

Baltimore finally broke through with a single run on an RBI hit by Rick Miller in the seventh.

From that point, however, the Astros took control. While Wilson continued to shut down the Oriole offense, Houston scored single runs off Baltimore starter Ken Holtzman and reliever Ray Burris in the seventh and eighth.

When Wilson tired in the ninth, reliever Mike Marshall came out of the bullpen to get the final two outs and record his first save of the post-season.

Game four is Wednesday in Houston. The game will rematch Series-opening starters Tom Seaver for the Orioles and Ken Forsch for the Astros.

Houston--For all the bad baseball in the first three games of the Joy in Mudville World Series, this one turned out a classic.

Houston took a commanding three games-to-one lead with a 1-0 win over Baltimore Wednesday at the Astrodome.

Astro catcher Johnny Edwards blooped a single to left field that scored Carlos May with the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth to give Houston the thrilling victory.

The game turned out to be pitching duel between aces Tom Seaver of Baltimore and Ken Forsch of Houston. For eight innings, both pitchers held the opposition scoreless.

After Forsch shut down the Orioles again in the top of the ninth, the Astros finally broke through against Seaver in the bottom half.

With one out, May singled on an 0-2 pitch. The Astro left fielder moved to second base when a balk was called on Seaver. Doug Rader then singled off the glove of a diving Davey Johnson at second base; May moved to third.

With the left-handed hitting Edwards due at the plate, Baltimore replaced Seaver with southpaw reliever Pete Richert. Edwards delivered the game-winner with a bloop hit that fell in front of a diving Ken Singleton.

After a rough outing in the Series opener on short rest, Forsch was masterful. The Houston right-hander gave up just two hits, walked three and struck out six.

Seaver allowed five hits, walked two and fanned six.

The Astros will bid for their first JIM World Series title Thursday when Larry Dierker takes the mound. The Orioles will attempt to force the Series back to Baltimore with Jon Matlack as their starting pitcher.

[Joy in Mudville]

After a hot start to the Joy in Mudville World Series at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium, the Oriole offense has been absent in Houston's Astrodome.

The Orioles started fast in games one and two on their home turf. Baltimore scored six runs in its Series-opening victory. Since then, runs have been scored about as often as Archie Bunker compliments his son-in-law Meathead.

Baltimore lost game two 8-3. After the Series shifted to the Astrodome, the Orioles have scored just one run in two more losses, including a 1-0 shutout in Wednesday's contest.

One loss from seeing its championships dreams disappear, Baltimore must find a way to kick its offense in gear. A lineup shakeup is possible, but what the Orioles really need is for All-Stars such as Dick Allen, Darrell Evans and Johnny Grubb to start hitting again. In its three straight Series losses, Baltimore's 3-4-5 hitters are just 4-for-its last-23 (.173).

If the Orioles don't find their offense, Thursday's game might be the last of the '72 season.

Fielding Woes
Baltimore has committed at least one error in all four World Series games thus far. Strong starting pitching or not, porous defense never helps a team. Perhaps Oriole fans are clamoring for the days of Brooks Robinson and Paul Blair.

Texas-Sized Deal
Rumors are swirling that the Texas Rangers are in hot pursuit of a top-notch starting pitcher. Winners of the American League West, Texas wants to stay in the saddle of being a perennial World Series contender.

Awards Announcement
Following the completion of the World Series, JIM awards winners will be handed out. First will come the Gold Glove winners followed by the Comeback Players of the Year. Next the Cy Young Award winners will be announced. Finally, the Most Valuable Player Awards will be presented.

[Joy in Mudville]

Houston--Baltimore is still having trouble scoring runs. Yet, one swing of the bat by rookie Johnny Grubb proved to be enough in Thursday's Joy in Mudville World Series game five.

Grubb homered off Houston reliver Fred Gladding as Baltimore stayed alive in the Series with a 1-0 victory in 10 innings. Thus, the Orioles send the World Series back to Baltimore with the Astros leading three games to two.

Starters Jon Matlack for Baltimore and Larry Dierker for Houston blanked the opposition prior to being lifted for pinch-hitters. Ultimately, three Oriole relievers also shut out the Astros.

Houston nearly ended the Series in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Carlos May reached on a fielding error by Baltimore short stop Bobby Grich. Game four hero Johnny Edwards singled May to second and sent Oriole right-handed reliever Bill Slayback to the showers.

Rookie right-hander Ray Burris came in from the bullpen and got Doug Rader to hit into a force out. With runners on the corners, Burris got switch-hitter Marty Martinez to ground into an unassisted force to end the inning.

That set up Grubb's heroics. After Gladding retired the first two batters in the 10th, Grubb clubbed an 0-1 fastball into the right field seats.

Oriole closer Fred Beene then pitched a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning to earn the save.

Following a travel day, the Series will resume at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium. Still seeking the clinching victory, Houston will start right-hander Don Wilson. Left-hander Ken Holtzman will be Baltimore's starting pitcher.

[Joy in Mudville]

With the Joy in Mudville World Series winging its way back to Baltimore for game six, the league rumor mill is churning like a stomach full of ballpark food.

Insiders say that an unprecendented number of off-season trades are about to go down. Among the rumored teams involved in the deals are the California Angels, Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals, Oakland A's, Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds. Even the two teams battling for the World Series title, Houston and Baltimore, are working on trades while the Fall Classic is played out.

Some of the names being bandied about include former Cy Young Award winner Paul Splittorff, 20-game winner Andy Messersmith, American League playoff MVP Davey Johnson and Texas pitchers Bill Gogolewski and Steve Renko. In addition, hot prospects like George Brett, Frank Tanana and Frank White have also been rumored to be on the move. Don't be surprised if picks for the June amateur draft start changing hands as well.

"Once the final out settles into a glove, watch the transactions list closely," said one league GM. "It's going to be fun."
