1970 League Championship Results
American League Championship Series Boston (A) (101-61) defeats Detroit (99-63) in 5 games The Americans hit 10 HR in the 5 games to power their way to the World Series. Tim Salmon has 2 of them for 7 RBI, but the big surprise is soft-hitting Jack Saltzgaver who had 3 bombs of his own. He had 6 for the entire regular season. National League Championship Series Boston (N) (92-70) stifles Cincinnati (93-69) in 5 games The other Boston team wins on the basis of their pitching. "Medicine Bill" Mountjoy wins 2 complete games, including a shutout. Their other two wins are recorded by their clutch closer, Harry Trekell, who was able to shut down 9th inning Cincy rallies in games 3 & 4. |

1970 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW
BOSTON AMERICANS (101-61) - The Americans are led by a couple of powerhitting on-base monsters by the name of Tim Salmon (.264, 32 HR, 106 RBI, .387 OBP) and Mickey Tettleton (.268, 21 HR, 69 RBI, .447 OBP). They aren't known for their high batting average as a team, but once they get on base, they know how to knock them in, allowing their #1 pitching staff to take over. That staff is led by Doc White (23-10, 2.71 ERA, 319 K) and El Smith (16-14, 3.37 ERA, 182 K). They are ready to beat up on their crosstown rivals. BOSTON BEANEATERS (92-70) - The Beaneaters are very similar to the Americans...just a tad below them in talent. Their batting is a bit lower. Their speed is a bit slower. Their pitching is ranked 2nd in the league. You can see why they have an inferiority complex in Beantown, since they've always been second best in recent years. The main man on their offense is Carlos Delgado (.254, 31 HR, 100 RBI, .354 OBP), with some support from Mike Vail (.291, 14 HR, 52 RBI), Ken Retzer (.300, 19 HR, 62 RBI), and George "White Wings" Tebeau (.310, 11 HR, 82 RBI). On the mound, they have a bit more depth than the Americans. Their top guy is obviously sophomre star "Medicine Bill" Mountjoy (23-18, 3.10 ERA, 138 K), but right behind him they have Vern Olsen (18-11, 3.39 ERA, 139 K) and Ownie Carroll (18-10, 3.63 ERA, 113 K). PREDICTION - It should be a dogfight in Beantown, but I'm going on a hunch and predicting that the Beaneaters depth at the bottom of their rotation will help them overcome the favored Americans. Beaneaters in 7. Last edited by metsgeek; 04-02-2004 at 05:18 PM. |

1970 WORLD SERIES RESULTS
Game 1 Boston (A) 4 - Boston (N) 2 Mickey Tettleton and Tim Salmon each knock one out, while Norm Zauchin and Jack Saltzgaver contribute 2 hits apiece. Game 2 Boston (A) 10 - Boston (N) 2 Spot starter Wilcy Moore comes through in the clutch with 7 2/3 solid innings with a little help from firstbaseman Norm Zauchin, who had another solid day batting 3 for 4 with 3 RBI. Game 3 Boston (N) 10 - Boston (A) 7 Both teams combine for 29 hits as the pitching fails to show up in Fenway. George Tebeau leads the Beaneaters with 3 hits and 3 RBI. Game 4 Boston (N) 3 - Boston (A) 2 The Beaneaters score 3 runs in the first 3 innings on homers by Ken Retzer and Carlos Delgado. The Red Sox rally for 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th, but 2 perfect innings from closer Harry Trekell preserves the win, and knots the Series at 2 games apiece. Game 5 Boston (N) 4 - Boston (A) 1 The game remains scoreless until the top of the 8th when the Beaneaters score 2 runs on a homer by Ray Badgro. A series of doubles in the 9th inning adds 2 more insurance runs, putting them one game away from upsetting the Americans. Game 6 Boston (A) 2 - Boston (N) 1 Two inopportune 6th inning errors from Ray Durham and Ray Badgro ruin a nearly flawless performance from Medicine Bill Mountjoy and give the win to the Americans. It all comes down to Game 7, and, if the trend continues, the visiting Americans will take home the crown. Game 7 Boston (A) 3 - Boston (N) 4 Ray Durham redeems himself with a 2 run clutch single in the sixth inning to put the Beaneaters ahead 4-0. The Americans come back with 3 runs in the 7th and 8th, but another perfect 9th from Harry Trekell clinches the upset for the NL squad. 1970 CHAMPIONS - BOSTON BEANEATERS 1ST CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES MVP: Harry Trekell 3 2/3 IP, 1 HA, 0.00 ERA, 4 Saves That makes 3 years in a row where the eventual champion wins it for the first time in franchise history! What a fantastic project, Metsgeek.
I've read all 58 pages the last 2 days :-) Some observations... I waited 137 years (2004 - 1918 + 1952 - 1901) for Boston (Red Sox/Americans) to finally win it all. And freaking Joe Dimaggio was responsible. Bret Barberie - Hall of Famer? Did you not allow grounds keepers to raise the mounds in the late '60's? Haven't seen any sub-2 ERAs for awhile. I'm surprised you didn't comment on the irony when (some team) blew a 5-4 lead with 2 outs, bases empty in the 9th with a chance to win the WS and were subsequently closed out by Calvin Schiraldi. Shoeless Joe should be banned from this league for hitting with a tennis raquet. .469?! .392 lifetime?! Are averages high across the board or are the # of .400 & high .300 hitters outliers? Anxiously awaiting '71...... |

To be honest, I think some of the high results (like Joe Jackson's batting average) are a direct result of using the Random database with the historical era settings. I have a theory (no real science involved) about the results. Hopefully I can explain it. In the actual early history of baseball, there were many players who would translate to having hit ratings of 8, 9 or 10. Thus the league settings would spread out the hit chances evenly among those hitters. A couple may eclipse .400 occasionally, but most of the top hitters hit around .370 or so in their best season. In Random Chaos, these hitters are spread out over the entire history of baseball. The ones who were still lucky enough to be playing in the era of high averages had a much higher proportion of poor hitters (and poor pitchers for that matter) playing with them. Thus, you have Joe Jackson who has a 10 in hits playing with only a few batters who have 6, 7, or 8 in Hits. The League Settings help predetermine a range of amount of hits for the entire league, so Joe Jackson would get the lion's share since he is leagues ahead of his competitors. I've regularly checked the league totals vs. the historical league totals, and they are generally within 5% of each other. Jackson's .469 was simply a monstrous year, but the rest of the league was pretty much in order. I also think that the lack of sub-2.00 ERA's result from similar reasons. A higher total quality of pitchers = more parity. Keep on reading....and don't forget to check out my Doubleday Federation thread. Link is in the sig below.....

On an unrelated note.....
I've come up with an idea for my next Alternate Historical Replay, and I thought I'd tease everyone with the name. The idea resulted when I read about some of the new features on OOTP6. I'll either call it Logan's Run Baseball or The Metabolic Leagues. Anyone want to hazard a guess about the twist?
