1956 World Series results
1956 World Series: New York Yankees vs. St. Louis Cardinals
Results Game 1, October 3rd, 1956, Sportsman's Park Road Win Lifts New York to 1-0 Lead in WS The New York Yankees wasted no time taking the lead in the World Series, beating the St. Louis Cardinals at Sportsman's Park by the score of 9-2. The win gives New York a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Yankees left-hander Johnny Antonelli threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball. With New York leading 1-0 in the top of the second, Nellie Fox hit a run-scoring single off St. Louis pitcher Don Gross. It put the Yankees ahead 2-0. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Yankees manager Hooks Dauss said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Yankees lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 4th, 1956, Sportsman's Park New York Tops St. Louis Again, 9-2 With starter Billy Pierce leading the charge, the New York Yankees crushed the St. Louis Cardinals, 9-2, in Game 2 of the World Series. Pierce threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball at Sportsman's Park as New York breezed to a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Ernie Banks had a key at-bat with one out in the top of the fourth for New York. With the bases loaded and the Yankees leading 1-0, he drew a walk, driving in 1 run. "We're not going to sweep 'em," Pierce said in response to a question after the game. "St. Louis is too good not to take a game somewhere." The next game is set to be played on October 6th, 1956 at Yankee Stadium in New York. Yankees lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 6th, 1956, Yankee Stadium Cardinals Hammered by Snider, Fall Further Behind in WS The New York Yankees are one game away from a sweep after downing the visiting St. Louis Cardinals at Yankee Stadium, 6-5. Yankees center fielder Duke Snider was 2-3 with 2 home runs and a walk, while adding 3 RBIs and scoring twice. New York now holds a 3-0 advantage in the best-of-7 World Series. The game was all tied up in the bottom of the eighth, until Snider delivered big-time for New York, stroking a dramatic solo home run off Sam Jones. The game-changing hit put the Yankees on top, 6-5. "It was a good day, but I'm not letting my guard down," Snider said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Yankee Stadium in New York. Yankees lead series 3-0 Game 4, October 7th, 1956, Yankee Stadium New York Sweeps World Series With a 7-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals tonight at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees wrapped up their 6th title in team history. New York left little doubt who was the better club. "Team" was the word of the day as the Yankees celebrated the culmination of their banner year in the victors clubhouse following the game. "Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said New York manager Hooks Dauss. "Our players felt that way all year and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void." A jovial mood filled the air as New York celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" in the works. "We're going to celebrate our team, our championship New York Yankees," the mayor said. The champions completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the AL and a 97-57 record. Yankees win series 4-0 World Series MVP: CF Duke Snider (New York Yankees) |
