End of Season 1881
7th October 1881 The fans of the Baltimore Orioles had to sit through another up and down season this year as the team again failed to push to hard for the AL Pennant. Their favourites finished the season with a record of 42 and 42 to claim second place in the AL table 6 behind the eventual winners. This record was compiled by mainly playing average ball all year with only June being an outstanding month with 9 wins. The team finished the regular season with a 3-7 loss to the Philadelphia Athletics followed by a 2-1 home series win against the St Louis Brown Stockings 4-3, 6-4 and 6-7 The star's of the show this year were First Baseman Dan Brouthers and pitcher Stump Wiedman. While most of the batting struggled to find any consistent form Brouthers had an excellent season. Brouthers collected 90 hits from 263 at bats in 71 games. He also managed to collect 44 runs and 41 RBI's for an average of .342 for the season. Wiedman was again solid all season from the mound as he picked up his first 20 win season. He pitched 347.1 innings in 43 games to win 21 of them. He gave up 366 hits and 100 earned runs for an ERA of 2.59 on the year. End of Season 1881
7th October 1881 The fans of the Red Caps had to suffer through a very bad year for their team as they managed to win less than a third of the games played. The team finished with a record of 27-57 to be the worst in all baseball. The season started off with a winning month at 7-6 in April but then just went down hill from their. Their terrible May and August months with only 3 wins in each summed up how bad the team were. The regular season finished on a down for the fans as well as they team lost all 4 of their final regular season games. They lost 2-4 on the road to the Chicago White Stockings before losing a home series 0-3 to the Cincinnati Reds 1-3, 2-4 and 1-4 there were not really any stars in the side at all as all the players had their bad periods during the month. The best batter in a group of bad batters was Left Fielder Buttercup Dickerson. Dickerson started 53 of the 68 games he played prior to injury finishing his season. He picked up 66 hits from 223 at bats to score 19 runs and 16 RBI's for an average of .296 The pitching also had a tough year with neither starter getting above 15 wins. The best pitcher from the starters was Tommy Bond. Bond worked tirelessly through 347 innings in 42 games to pick up 14 wins. He gave up 379 hits and 96 earned runs for an ERA of 2.49 Full season pitching stats Full season batting stats After the announcement by the MLB that they are extending the league to 16 teams, we will bring you a special report on the expansion draft once it has been completed. |

End of Season 1881
7th October 1881 The fans of the Atlantics had to sit through another season of mediocrity from their team as they failed to break .500 for another season. The team finished with a 36-48 season which left them in third place in the NL. The fans will hope for better next year. The team started badly and never really recovered other than having a good month in September with 9 wins. The final 4 regular season games in October were a 2-5 loss on the road to the Cincinnati Red Stockings followed by a 0-3 road trip loss to the Chicago White Stockings 4-12, 2-7 and 9-10. Mike Moynahan broke his foot during these games and will miss 4 weeks. There were very few bright spots in the team during the year. The bright spots that did show up were Centre Fielder Hardy Richardson and Short Stop Jim O'Rourke. Richardson picked up an average of .315 during the year from 110 hits in 349 at bats. This was compiled in 82 games where he also collected 49 runs and 43 RBI's. O'Rourkes average was slightly lower at .306 with 110 hits from 359 at bats in 84 games played. He collected 48 runs and 44 RBI's. The pitching didn't have much in the way of bright sparks. This was possibly due to the fact that 3 starters were used over the course of the season. The best was Mickey Welch but even he struggled on the way to 19 wins in 42 games. His ERA was 2.85.
