RUMORS-One of the IBL's best pitchers, all time, is unhappy. The Texans moved him into the Closer's role and he has made it clear he wants to remain a starter.

TRADE NEWS-A blockbuster name is dealt in San Antonio. The Texans are looking to rebuild and get younger, and unload payroll. Figueroa, while certainly aging, will put butts in the seats and mentor, and can start and relieve (though for now he starts in T.J. Millers rotation spot). Whaley was a guy I wanted to rule 5 but the Texans took him 2 picks ahead of me in the 1st round. I have more than enough payroll flexibility to do this and I think I have a legit shot at a wild card spot. If not, I work to move him at the deadline. Either way I get another outstanding young arm for the bullpen, and move up to the 43rd pick (2nd round) from the 50th. Whaley is added to the roster as well, and Milovan Opacic is sent to Wilmington, with Whaley taking his spot in San Antonio.

2032 first year player draft

2032 FIRST YEAR PLAYER DRAFT
This is my third draft as the GM of the Silver Stars. In the 1st two I acquired a bunch of early picks and have worked hard to pour young talent into the organization pitching wise and offensively.
A look at our top 10 prospects and potential ceiling
1) Shane Finnin RHP (20) 2030 Draft 12th overall pick out of Neuqua Valley HS, IL. IBL’s #9 prospect. At Class A Allentown, 6-5 4.37 in 13 starts. Top of the rotation potential
2) James Bryant RHP (22) 2031 Draft 4th overall pick out of U. of Miami. IBL’s #17 prospect now at AA Louisville where he made the all star team. 7-4 3.62 in 14 starts. Top of the rotation arm
3) Derek Bailey R Catcher (21) 2029 Draft 51st overall pick out of Christian Life HS, IL. IBL’s #30 prospect at Class A Plano. Bat is progressing slower than hoped, already a gold glove defender. .205/.372/.305 in 200 AB’s this year. Likely big glove 6 or 7 hitter.
4) Jose Sanchez R Outfielder (21) 2029 FA out of the Dominican by Edmonton. IBL’s #55 prospect acquired in trade last month with Providence. Raking at AA Louisville .324/.365/.426 in 16 games. Speed to leadoff or hit 2nd.
5) Jorge Rodriguez R 1B (18) 2030 FA out of the Dominican. IBL’s #59 prospect at Rookie League Columbus. Monster power bat who’s still on track. Starting at Columbus again this year. Will be a 4 hitter, 40+ HR guy.
6) Cory Owens R UTIL (23) 2029 Draft 38th overall pick out of Arizona State by West Michigan. Acquired from Brooklyn in July of last year. IBL’s #64 prospect. Very good defender at 2B/3B and SS, who knows how to get on base. 2 hole hitter, or lower in the order, runs well. Close to .500 OBP between Louisville and Wilmington (where he is now) this year.
7) Tony Booth Switch INF (20) 2030 Draft 19th overall pick out of Carrizo Springs HS, TX. IBL’s #83 prospect. Tore his PCL in early April and is out for the year. Our most sough after prospect in any trade talks. Can play everywhere but 1B in the IF and some LF, huge legs and a leadoff, 2 hole bat. Was off to a strong start .333/.389/.500 in 11 games before being hurt.
8) Skip Bascombe RHP (24) 2029 Draft 149th overall pick out of the U. of Georgia. Drafted, failed to sign in 2028 (120th overall pick by Michigan). After a real strong ’31 year in AA has struggled at AAA late last year and this year. Moved to the pen. Could be a 4 or 5 if he irons things out.
9) Ricardo Castro RHP (18) 2030 FA out of Venezuela. Started the year at Class A Plano, is 2-2 4.29 in 9 starts, handling his own but a ways to go. Top of the rotation arm with 4 pitches.
10) Jim Gordon R (19) 2031 Draft 42nd overall pick out of Chaparral HS, AZ. Had a good first year at Columbus and promoted to Short Season St Louis for last few games, where he’ll start this year. Play all three OF positions and has great legs, big power projection.

2032 AMATEUR DRAFT
Hugh Hartman is, and has been, the top overall pick in everyone’s mind, if we are picking a pitcher. Ramon Ortiz is the bat if we are not. Given the way our top 10 looks, what we have on the IBL roster now, I think the smart play is to take the pitcher. His intangibles are what you’d hope for in a top pick, and at 21 he’s closer than most.

I will again follow the 1st round until these 10 players are taken, with commentary.

I’ve actually had a blast going back over 20 years of drafting to see my commentary on players that did and did not pan out. Number in brackets after the comments is that players place on the OSA top 10 list.

1) San Antonio Silver Stars– Hugh Hartman RHP (21) 6’1” 205 TCU- A starter who legitimately works in the upper 90’s and hits 100+ more than a few times a start. A leader on and off the field with an outstanding work ethic. Pretty much a dream player to have available at this pick. (7)
2) Buffalo Bisons - Ramon Ortiz R/R Catcher (20) 6’6” 220 U. of Memphis – Legit franchise player. Good catcher who’s getting better, monster bat. Projects to hit 3 or 4 in 2-3 years. (6)
3) Dallas Texans – Harley Crawford LHP (19) 6’ 185 Franklin Towne HS, Philadelphia, PA – Ace in the making. Power arm from the left side works in the upper 90’s. Concern about attitude, not a great teammate.
4) Arizona Rattlers – Dae-Jung Park R/R 2B (18) 5’10” 170 Franklin Road Academy HS, Nashville, TN – Future all star caliber lead off hitter. Off the charts wheels, .350+ bat. Very good tools at 2B, and maybe a decent SS but that’s still developing. Good teammate, leader. (9)
5) Providence Black Sox – Scott Juneau RHP (21) 6’ 190 U. of Mississippi – Battler, hard worker, upper 90’s 3 pitch kid with top of the rotation stamina and stuff.
6) San Jose Sharks – Ramiro Gonzalez LHP (19) 5’10” 165 Oak Hill HS, Converse, IN – Freak of an athlete. A left handed knuckleballer! It’s legit too. Could be a huge upside pick, or a enormous flop, be curious to see how this one plays out. (8)
7) Philadelphia Patriots – Melvin Schmitt LHP (20) 6’2” 195 Dakota County Tech, MN – Huge arm, works 97-99 with 5 pitches. Smart kid who could have done pretty much anything out of college. Ace if this works out. (10)
8) Michigan Wolverines – Josh Parker RHP (21) 6’1” 195 Bradley College, IL – If the 3rd pitch comes he’s a top of the rotation guy. 96-98 fastball cutter combo with change as #3. Not a great kid though, hard to get along with. 5 other kids I’d have taken before this kid here.
9) Hawaii Warriors – Marcos Zamora R/R IF/OF (21) 6’2” 185 Vanderbilt – Big time prospect who will hit 1st or 2nd. Enormous versatility defensively, can play 2B, 3B, SS as well as LF and CF with 50+ steal speed. Turned down the Cyclones at this very slot last year. (5)
10) Brooklyn Cyclones – Steve Knight RHP (19) 5’10” 175 Xaverian Brothers HS, Westwood, MA – Their pick for not signing Zamora last year, who was just taken. Big upside, mid 90’s arm already with 4 very good to great pitches in the making. Most feel this was a huge steal at the 10th spot, the 2nd overall prospect on the OSA’s board. (2)
11) Sacramento Express – Vernon Carlisle RHP (20) 5’11” 175 Pepperdine – Mid to upper 90’s power righty. Issue for us was his size, or lack of. OSA’s top overall prospect in the draft. Huge arm, 3 pitch mix and leaves it all on the field. (1)
12) Tulsa Drillers – Adrian Gonzales RHP (22) 6’1” 200 Carroll U, WI – The drafts other triple digit arm. Monster upside, mature beyond his years, clubhouse leader and many feel an ace. Also a steal getting the OSA’s 3rd rated prospect this deep into the 1st. (3)
13) El Paso Diablos – Steve Banks RHP (18) 6’ 185 Jones HS, Orlando, FL – A project, too early in many opinions, to take him. Works upper 80’s right now with 3 + pitches.
14) Edmonton Trappers – Terry Clark RHP (22) 6’ 190 U. of Jacksonville, FL – 4 pitch mix but another guy expected to go much later. Great makeup, great teammate but stuff, to our guys, feels more mid rotation than top.
15) Dayton Dragons – Jesus Reyes L/L OF (19) Maryknoll HS, Honolulu, HI – OSA’s #4 prospect but someone our scouts don’t love. They have him as an all star leadoff guy, big speed hitter who makes contact. High average. Our guys say no. (4)

Round
2) Mal Magruder LHP (22) 6’1” 195 Rice – Durable, great work ethic, 3 + pitches (93-95).
2) Lorenzo Bermudez Switch/R UTIL (21) 6’3” 200 U. of South Carolina – Incredibly versatile speedster. Plays an elite 1B, LF, CF, RF and a very good 3B. Could win a gold glove in Left today. 50 steal legs and a bat that is good, could be real good.
3) Rodney Crosby L/L 1B/DH (18) 6’5” 230 Sterling HS, Baytown, TX – High ceiling Avg. guy. 1B/DH limits his versatility but enormous offensive upside.
5) Shane Kramer RHP (18) 6’6” 210 Cortland HS, NY – Asking 1.5M in a 130K slot. A huge body, huge ceiling that’s exactly the risk a team like ours takes here.

NEWS-Fresno has fired Manager Juan Silva and GM Dean Ballard 72 games into the season. The Grizzlies are 25-47, 17 games out, and owner Jim Reynolds is furious. Asking only a .500 season this year, he's clearly run out of patience. Silva was twice Coastal League manager of the year ('25 and '26) and they made the post season last year as well. It was his 10th year as manager of the club. Ballard was in his 5th season as GM of the team, coming off his 1st playoff appearance last year.

SLUMPS-Quincy Hutchison is hitting .137/.171/.247 through 16 June games. His average plummeting to a season low .315. Combined with Jeffrey Bullocks horrid June (.123/.186/.215) it's a wonder we've won a game. They combined for 4 HR's and 12 RBI's.

NEWS-Esteban Figueroa can no longer start, so he won't. He'll be moved to the pen while we look for a trading partner, though his contract will likely halt any chance of moving him until at least this winter. We are going to move to a 7 man pen, 12 man staff, sending down OF Ricardo Mena since he has options remaining and calling up RHP George Horne for a few starts. With those moves the bullpen will be reshuffled. Hidalgo has lost something important since returning, and is having issues getting outs from both sides of the plate, he'll move to a middle relief role. Ron Brooks will become the new closer with Leon Whaley setting up, and backing up in the closers role.

NEWS/NOTES
Green Bay's shift to win now apparently spurred some movement in the front office as they immediately went out and made 2 huge deals.

Brooklyn opens its doors for sale, and deals 2 very good players, getting back 2 REAL good pitchers, 1 a potential ace the other their future closer. Taking on Canales salary as well, but I fully expect them to deal him before the deadline.

San Jose moving to a win now mindset, and acting on it. Grabbing 35 year old SP Artie McCarthy for switch hitting catcher Scott Barker (who becomes the LH in a R/L platoon in Az) and young closing prospect Al Scarbrough.

In a flurry of moves the Blizzard trade for the IBL's #1 prospect, sending superstar Ricardo Colon to Balitmore in a deal that helps both clubs and then they send two good young prospects to Fresno and get one of the premier power bats in the game in Foppe Melis. They immediately recall Madrigal and he's in their starting 9. Columbus can't be happy to see their former draft choice return to their division. Melis hasn't hit less than 31 homers in a season since 2029 (31, 33, 39). Colon moves into the leadoff spot for Baltimore, who's tied with Boston atop the Keystone and without 2 middle infielders in Ayers and Victor Wells. Colon is a .306/.377/.394 lifetime hitter in 567 games with 103 SB's. He's 1 year away from free agency. Melis takes over the 1B job Colon vacated.

NEWS/NOTES
The 28th sees a flurry of pre-deadline deals.

The Knights, everyone agrees, put themselves in outstanding position, acquiring a 1 and a 2 hitter while letting go of two veterans with some salary baggage. Only thing anyone can surmise in the Chicago deal is that the Zmelik was going to test free agency and Chicago wanted something in return. I'd have taken the comp pick. Rivera returns to the Iron Pigs, the team he signed with back in 2012 and played his 1st 4 seasons with. He's a three time world series champion. Werner looks like he's headed to free agency as well, but both are onboard for the Knights 2032 title run.

I managed to talk Alaska into parting with two big arms, one older, one a young bullpen stud in the making. Bascombe had run his course here, feeling like he's stagnated, and Horne is a 'tweener' without the stamina to eat enough innings to start. Lopez could be a sleeper find, huge arm who's actually got better stuff as a starter than as the reliever he was being used as. He'll take Horne's rotation spot in Wilmington. Keller was taken in the 4th round of last years draft as a 2B, and converted to a pitcher this past winter, where he showed up as the 74th best prospect in the IBL.

The Avalanche then send Michael Turner to Baltimore and get back a big bullpen arm in Davila and a young power hitting prospect in Rodriguez.
