My guaranteed upsets for today:

Southern Illinois over West Virginia
N.C. State over California
George Mason over Michigan State
Salukis and WV are a great matchup.

Mich St better not fall to Mason, I have them winning a couple. Mason will have a chip on their shoulder, especially after Hofstra beat Nebraska in the NIT last night. Most people in the NYC area feel that Hofstra should have gotten GM's bid.

I don't hold the same faith in Mason, but that's just my bias.

Oh, and because their #2 scorer is suspended for the game because he felt the need to punch Hofstra's leading scorer in the balls because they were going to lose in the CAA Tournament.

Yeah, I forgot about that suspension.

I usually just enjoy March Madness, no matter what my brackets say...I don't get too worked up over the games (read: I only yell a little bit ).

However, when my Dawgs are playing, I'm pretty sure my neighbors think that were having a Royal Rumble or something at my home. The SIU-WV game is going to be a scrap and a half, two teams that play good "D" and bleed the shot-clock to the last second...

LOL, yep. good game > bracket buster

I'm trying to find some way to get out of work to watch that game. I haven't seen a whole lot of the Salukis but when WVU is nailing the 3 and they're working the back door, they are fun to watch.

You can check out the highlights now (if you haven't already seen them) on MMOD. There's a vicious dunk towards the end of the highlights.

West Virginia doesn't really play particularly good "D", it just looks like they do because of the lower number of possessions. They are actually about on par with Tennessee (77th overall). Of course, SIU's offense could sometimes have trouble scoring on the 5th-6th grade rec team I coach (hey, we are in the final four!!). SIU's defense is legit though, and West Virginia runs the type of offense it should excel against. They already settle for jump shots (which go in quite frequently)...however, SIU is going to force those jump shots to be further and further outside and with a hand in their face. This one won't be pretty (as in not much scoring)...I've got SIU but the outcome really depends on West Virginia's shooting.

I picked SIU on all my brackets, but I always do that...even when I don't think they'll go far.

I think this has the potential to be a great game. It also has the potential to be a WV run-away. I think the Egyptians will need a big game from Tatum and will have to keep this one "ugly" (a hard-fought defensive battle) to stand a chance. The Salukis of '05-'06 always bring to mind the phrase "winning ugly"...at least what I've been able to see/listen to.

Yeah, I'm just learning to be a smart NCAA hoops stat-guy like you...I'm not a complete 'Kenpom' convert yet, but I'm getting there. So, yeah, you are right. But, in ESPN parlance, this is a "battle of good defenses"

Yea, last night I had to listen to Dick Enberg rave about how good Air Force's defense is since they allow only 56 points a game (against middling opponents in an average of 58 possessions a game). This continued until Jamar Smith nailed about his 6th wide open 3 pointer. Pomeroy's rankings have the Air Force defense ranked a stellar 92nd in the nation .

Meanwhile, Enberg and Bilas marvaled at how the low scoring Air Force offense (yet ranked 25th in the nation) was able to keep the game close. Antoine Hood must have a great RBI rating.

Yeah, it took me 1 minute and 30 seconds to get into MMOD.

As for those games, I've got SIU, Cal, and Michigan St. I'm slightly worried about two Elite 8 teams, Michigan St. and Georgetown. They better win!
