August 13, 1909

HW - John Heenan (5/4) (22-7-1) TKO4 Joe Goss (33/26) (16-5-2) (my biggest pet peeve of TBCB2 stopped on the first reopening of a bloody nose)
HW - Frank Mantell (UR/19) (11-4) UD10 George Gardner (36/28) (18-11-2) (mantell at pre)
LW - Jack Everhardt (19/7) (12-4-2) SD10 Jewey Cooke (17/18) (11-7-3)
HW - Bill McKinnon (21/13) (11-5) TKO6 Sam McVey (7/18) (23-6) (one of the biggest upsets in recent memory)
MW - Arthur Cripps (30/26) (9-10) UD10 Jack Nelson (UR) (10-4) (nelson at pre)
WW - Owen Ziegler (club) (13-15) UD10 Otto Sieloff (club) (4-22-1) (ziegler at post, sieloff at end)

With the McVey upset I am going to start keeping a log of upsets. I'm not gonna go back through the history but I'll start from here. Not sure there is a bigger on anyways. A 2 over a 10 the odds were 15:2.

Cole wins very close fight

I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the LBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization.

August 16, 1909

George Cole (CH) (10-7-4) took advantage of a point deduction in the 15th round to win a MD15 over Joe Gans (2/2) (27-4-3).

This bout was close all the way. It was a foul plagued fight with Cole being warned 3 times and Gans 4 times. Cole was penalized a point in the first round for drilling Gans in the jaw with his elbow. Cole won the first three rounds.

Gans settled in and won the next 3 to knot it up. Cole's right eye started to swell in the 6th. The two fighters split the next 6 rounds.

Cole won the 13th and 14th in this judges eyes to take a two round lead. Gans won the final round but was penalized a point for the third time he was warned about using his shoulder. The other warning was for low blows. it turns out the penalty cost him a draw but Cole would've retained the title anyways.

Gans filed a complaint with the commissioner's office directly after the fight and it took the commisioner (me) exactly 12 seconds to stamp "denied" on it and send it back with a note to quit crying.

I had the fight 142-141 Cole. Shane McLeod, ringside expert, had it 144-142. The official judges had it 142-141/142-142/142-141.

On the undercard

HW - Tommy Dugan (47/48) (11-5) UD10 Jim Fell (UR/60) (9-6) (fell at pre)
LW - Austin Gibbons (6/9) (18-17-3) DRAW10 Tommy Murphy (32/32) (9-13-3) (murphy at post)
LH - Joe Butler (3/3) (29-7-1) UD10 Dan Flynn (8/9) (11-5-2)
LW - George McFadden (30/27) (10-9-2) Dick Hyland (UR) (8-2) (hyland at pre)
WW - Charles McCarthy (club) (10-21-1) TKO2 Bill Quinn (club) (6-12-2) (mccarthy at end and also stepped up from LW for this club fight)

Johnson loses title, streak and shot at record

I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the LBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization.

August 21, 1909

Joe Jeannette (lba/lbc) (19-0) continued his undefeated career with a huge 13th round KO of Jack Johnson (ch/1) (34-2).

Johnson's winning streak ends at 33 fights, 1 short of the 34 record held by Tommy Ryan. Johnson's record 21 title defenses will stand for a long while.

Johnson and Jeannette fought a close tactical fight. Johnson showed better defense, but when Jeannette landed he hurt Jack.

Johnson was far more accurate landing 55.9% of his punches to Jeannette's 23.3%. but Jeannette was busier and landed more power shots.

Johnson's right eye started to swell in the 10th and then got caught with a brutal short clean right cross. Johnson was out cold and the ref could've counted to 100.

At the time of the KO it was a very close fight.

I had it 116-115 Jeannette. Lee MacRae, ringside expert, had it 115-115. The official judges had it 116-113 Johnson and the other two had it 116-113 Jeannette. This fight unified 2 out of the 3 HW titles.

On the undercard

MW - Rube Ferns (15/13) (25-12) KO2 Paddy Purtell (24/22) (10-14) (Purtell at post)
BW - Frankie Neil (7/6) (18-17-3) UD10 Paddy Kelly (UR) (8-3-1) (kelly at pre)
WW - Al Neill (13/6) (7-9-2) UD10 Young Sammy Smith (UR) (6-5-3) (smith at pre)
LH - Al Weinig (4/4) (11-10-1) DRAW10 Jack Graham (18/17) (7-11-1)
LW - George Monroe (club) (6-10) MD8 Jimmy Barry (UR) (6-7) (both fighters at pre for this club fight)

Wow I'm shocked, it was getting to the point where I thought no one would be able to take out Johnson. It'll be fun to see how he reacts to this lose.

So was I. Only Peter Jackson in Johnson's second fight and now Jeannette. I just went back to the start of this thread and it was around early April 2004 when Johnson last lost a fight. So I played this game for over 18 months without Johnson losing

August 24, 1909

LH - Jack O'Brien (1/1) (23-4-1) UD10 Gunner Moir (20/14) (8-12-1) (100-90 on all 3 cards but the fight wasn't even that close ... I had it 100-88, gave two 10-8 rounds just on shear domination)
BW - Jimmy Walsh (10/1) (9-8-5) MD10 Monte Attell (2/5) (13-5-1)
MW - George Lablanche (16/15) (17-17-4) MD10 Jack Williams (31/27) (12-5-2) (lablanche was at post)
FW - Tommy Connolly (21/15) (10-6) TKO4 Charlie Griffin (UR) (9-4) (griffin at pre, TKO for injury)
HW - Frank Moran (UR) (8-0) UD8 Jack Reed (UR) (3-7-1) (both at pre for this club fight)
FW - Marty McCue (club) (12-13-1) UD10 Austin Rice (club) (4-22-4) (both at post for this club fight, Rice stepped up to FW)

On a side note Rice maybe the worst 7 rated fighter ever.

End of August 1909

***note *** going to go ahead and call the titles WBA,WBC and IBF ... all title organizations in the LBA. It was getting to painstaking to change documents and also a little confusing for me .

Will be remembered as the month Jack Johnson finally lost again. That was the only title that changed hands as Peter Jackson kept his IBF HW title. George Cole retained his WBA Welterweight title.

Charles McCoy defeated Billy Papke again to finally get the WBC Middleweight belt. Also Young Peter Jackson fought and won a non-title bout.

Fighters on the move (all club to main unless noted)

HW - Billy Tate (7-5-1), Frank Moran (8-0) - William Miller (12-17-3) and Gus Ruhlin (11-16-4) main to club

LH - Frank Gotch (7-6), John Miller (8-3)

MW - Al Rogers (8-0-1)

WW - Frank Burke (8-0), Jimmy Mitchell (7-6), Jack Goodman (7-3-3), Arthur Evernden (8-1)

LW - Eddie Carroll (8-2), Arthur Cote (7-5-1), Tom Dunn (8-2), Irish Jack Smith (7-6), Dave Barry (6-7), Harry Pidgeon (8-0-1)

FW - Frank Maguire (7-5-1), Lew Ryall (7-6) - Jack Roberts (6-11) main to club)

BW - Jack Madden (8-1), Chappie Moran (18-18-3), Ned Morris (5-7-1), Nunc Wallace (7-5-1)

FLY - Joe Gates (8-0)

Debut Rankings
