Larry Carney
Austin, Marrt Ross passed away several years ago. I'm not sure about Jimmy.
The next Ring 99 meeting should be September 10th. Unfortunately I'll be out of town. Check out their website for the notice. Regarding Larry Carney: Larry Carney was one of the most exciting fighters to ever come out of Lowell. If he were fighting today Micky Ward’s fans would embrace him the same way they embrace Micky. He had a tremendous following back then. His three fights with Joe DeNucci were wars. I attended all three and thought Larry edged Joe all three times (official decisions, one win for Joe and two draws). He was a real hard puncher, especially with his left hook. He had a tendency to run hot and cold, however. His first loss against Gene Tapia was his first fight over five rounds and he was winning handily when he ran out of gas. His second and third losses to the underrated Joe Gomes and Frank Olivera were, in my opinion, Larry taking both lightly and not being fully prepared. He was a natural middleweight and his prime was 1961-1965. When he retuned to the ring in 1967 he came back as a light-heavyweight and was well past his prime. With due respect to Jimmy McDermott, Bob Benoit and Bobby Covino, they would have been hard pressed to go the distance with him during his prime. Here is what I have on him with respect to his amateur career: He fought in the Silver Mittens for several years, prior to the Golden Gloves (under 16 years of age). 1958 147 lb Lowell Golden Gloves Novice Runner-up 1959 160 lb Diamond Belt Champion 1959 147 lb Lowell Golden Gloves Champion (Won Outstanding Fighter Award) 1959 156 lb NEAAU Champion 1960 160 LB NE Golden Glove Champion 1960 156 lb NEAAU Champion 1961 160 lb NE Golden Glove Champion (Won Outstanding Fighter Award) 1959 147-lb Greater Lowell Golden Gloves Jan 13 Woodrow Pearson Lowell L KO 1 (Pearson was too experienced) Hartford, CT.’s Pearson was unable to compete in The New England Tournament of Champions, so Larry came in as a substitute and shocked everyone by winning the tournament. Going into the NE’s George Maddox was the favorite. 147-lb New England Tournament of Champions Feb 4 George Maddox Lowell W PTS 3 (Semi-final) Feb 5 Buddy DeCarlo Lowell W PTS 3 (Final) -- Ted Williams Salem, NH W KO 1 Williams was taken to hospital after being knocked unconcious for ten minutes (Williams later on as a professional won the New England light-heavyweight title from Bob Young in 1963) 147-lb Eastern Golden Gloves Tournament Mar 6 Chuck Burns New York L PTS 3 160 lb Diamond Belt Tournament Mar 17 James Powell Revere, MA W KO 1 Mar 17 Bob Rivard Revere, MA W TKO 2 Mar 17 Art Perry Revere, MA W TKO 2 (cuts) 156-LB NEAAU Tournament Apr 7 Joe Dean Boston W TKO 1 Apr 7 Joe Arsenault Boston W KO 1 Apr 8 Bernie Dougherty Boston W TKO 3 (cuts) 1960 Greater Lowell Golden Gloves Jan Louis Pina Lowell W PTS 3 Recorded 2 KOs leading to the final Jan Bob Ingersol Lowell W PTS 3 (Semi-final) Jan Tony Germinaro Lowell W TKO 3 (Final) 1960 New England Tournament of Champions Feb 5 Bob Rivard Lowell W PTS 3 (Semi-final) Feb 6 Eddie Owens Lowell W PTS 3 (Final) 156-LB NEAAU Tournament Mar 30 Earl Girrior Boston W KO 2 Mar 30 Jim Willard Boston W TKO 1 Mar 31 George Fiorenzia Boston W KO 1 Carney’s record reported to be 26-4 (19) 156-LB National AAU Tournament Apr 8 Dick Gosha Toledo, OH W PTS 3 Apr 9 Wilbert McClure Toledo, OH L TKO 2 (Semi-final) 1961 1961 Greater Lowell Golden Gloves Jan Carney records 4 Kos in the preliminary rounds Jan Tony Germinaro Lowell W KO 3 (Final) 1961 New England Tournament of Champions Feb 7 Eddie Owens Lowell W KO 3 (Final) 160-lb Eastern Golden Gloves Tournament Mar 8 Chico Brown New York W PTS 3 Mar 9 Charlie Clemons New York L PTS 3 (Semi-final) (Decision was controversial – Carney eventually represents East) 160-lb Inter-City Golden Gloves Tournament Mar 30 Leotis Martin Chicago L PTS 3 (Alternates)

Was hoping I could find Retzlaff at the Library of Congress site where I got a lot of my 1900-1930 baseball images. No luck but I did find this guy who to the best of my knowledge is not rated in the game nor has an image been posted of him.
Boxer is Charlie Beecher (boxrec http://www.boxrec.com/boxer_display.php?boxer_id=062464) who was 21-5-2 between 1919-23. For anyone who wants to take the time to look for other boxers the images are of excellent quality. Here is the link http://memory.loc.gov/ click on the search option and type in the name of the fighter you want to find. You wont find anything newer than the mid thirties but there are some very nice images in the Chicago Daily News gallary from between 1901-1930. If I get the time I will post a few more.

Here is Joe Gans from the same site. I notice at Boxing Rec there are a number of fighters named Joe Gans. Date on this image is 1907 so I would guess it is old master Joe Gans but I am not certain.

Here is Jack O'Keefe from the same site. The thing I was amazed at with all the deadball era baseball images and now the boxing ones I am finding is the clarity.
There are a couple of Jack O'Keefe's listed at boxrec but since this photo is dated as being taken in a Chicago gym in 1904 it must be this one. http://www.boxrec.com/boxer_display.php?boxer_id=017221

Gerald Tuffy Griffiths
Here is Tuffy Griffiths whose name was spelled Griffith(s) way back. He was known as the "Pender Pounder" having grown up in Pender, Nebraska. Someone created him in one of their universes and has the spelling as Griffith without the (s).
