Doug Phelps is expected to miss the next 11-12 months. He was off to a pretty decent start going 3-4 4.50 in 8 starts. It will be intersting to see what happens to his ratings when he comes back, from what I have over the course of this league the staminia takes a huge hit on these kinds of injuries. He is at 19 now, so it will be intersting to see what happens upon his return. Current Ratings: Stuff: 6/10, Movement: 8/10, Control: 6/14, Stamina: 19 GM Notes: Dalton Whitaker had a solid week up until the final game, where he struggled. I have no clue what Turcotte was thinking using him, when you have at least 3 guys in the pen well rested. Whitaker threw 2 innings the day before. I almost fired him at that point, but his contract runs out at the end of the year, so I decided to breath... Hollis has just had no luck with run support this season, he pitched a gem this week and took the ND. He seems to be finding his groove a little better, but along with him and Iemohci I have concerns about the number of walks increasing. I do believe the 2015 staff will look quite different than the 2014 staff... We keep playing tough teams, after splitting with the Braves and then losing 2 of 3 to the Cardinals, which doesn't make me happy, we host the Tourists. The Tourists might be one of the toughest teams in the league right now. Even if they have lost 8 of their last 10. Janchez continues to rock the ball. I am not sure what to do about this guy. He could be a future star, but is tagged with the "fragile" label and that really scares me. I could see a future OF of Galvez, Hammer and Janchez, which could be a top OF for years to come. And one of the better outfields in Cavaliers history... On the season Augusto is hitting .310-4-25, and has committed only 2 errors at SS. Mario Gomez was added to the Norfolk Cavaliers roster to take Augusto's slot. Gomez is hitting .399-12-63 in AAA. Other/Roster News: Lineup Change. Mario Gomez will take over and play 3B, and Tom Anderson will move over to play SS while Augusto is out. Depending on how this works, Dooley may end up at SS with Candy getting some more PT. Going to be an interesting period, with Augusto out. GM Notes: Dalton had some issues in his game against the Ports. Not sure if its conencidence or not, but he lost some speed on his FB as well. Hopefully that won't carry on. I would like him to be my closer for another year or two (at least). Paul Brown had a nice week, yet took a loss and ND. He gave up 3 runs in 16 innings. He has looked really solid this season and hopefully this is a nice sign of things to come in the future. Two more months to play, and our goal is to stay healthy and get our bats going. We leave WAY too many runners on base. Its easier to take when you can pull out the victory, but when you take a loss and leave 10 runners on its a tough pill to swallow. We lost 2 out of 3 to the Tourists, which is bad, but the way we did it made it even worse. Just didn't score runs, and personally I don't think their pitching is that great. Wasted 2 solid pitching performances. Looks like our key to going deep in the post season is going to come from scoring a run or two when needed. All these LOB's are starting to get me a little nervous, this happened last season as well... however in the post season we just forgot how to hit the ball. I like this core better than last years team. I didn't make any deals at the deadline, but I did shop a couple of guys around, as well as tried to pull off a deal for a prospect, but nothing came of it. A tough week ahead, and only 59 games remain. July in Review - 2022
Delaware Conference Monthly Awards
Bond Cops DEConf Batter of the Month Honors: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 27-year-old Claude Bond put together a solid offensive month for Dover and was crowned July's top batter in the Delaware Conference. He batted .367 with 10 home runs, 22 RBIs and 22 runs scored. Bond on the season is hitting .337 with 24 home runs. His stats include 82 RBIs and 69 runs scored. Morán Gets July's Top Pitcher Trophy: Veteran Jorge Morán put together quite a successful stretch in July for the Lewes Braves, earning himself the Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month award. Morán racked up a 4-1 record in 6 starts, posting a 2.16 ERA over 41.2 innings and striking out 36. To date this season, Morán has a record of 5 wins and 2 losses and a 2.29 ERA. He has appeared in 8 games and struck out 51 in 55 innings. DEConf Selects Rookie Star of the Month: A veritable toddler to the Delaware Conference, Anthony Lucarelli just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for July. Over the past month the 20-year-old shortstop for Seaford hit .279 with 29 hits, 2 home runs and 14 runs batted in. He also logged 3 walks and compiled a .296 on-base percentage. Thus far this year Lucarelli has hit .250 with 5 home runs and 42 RBIs. MarVa Conference Monthly Awards MVConf's Top Hitter Named: When guys like Ocean City's Francisco Reyes win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive July, the longtime MarVa Conference veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 30 hits in 91 at-bats. The veteran first baseman hit for a .330 batting average and collected 8 home runs, 24 RBIs and 22 runs scored. On the year Reyes is hitting .311 with 128 hits, 24 home runs, 81 RBIs, .385 OBP and has scored 58 runs. MVConf Top Pitcher for July Picked: Matt Hollis's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-0 in July, the 30-year-old Norfolk hurler has been named MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month. He fanned 37 in 39 innings, logged an ERA of 1.15 and allowed opponents to hit .148 against him. In 21 starts this season Hollis has rung up a 11-4 record and a 2.90 ERA. MarVa Conference Names Rookie of Month: Youngster José López emerged as the latest MarVa Conference Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Chesapeake deserved the honor, batting .314 with 3 home runs and 17 runs batted in. Is the month of July a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let López enjoy the limelight. López is hitting .307 this year with 12 home runs and 53 RBIs. He also has an OBP of .337, 15 walks and scored 45 times. The Generals have one of the best offensives in the game right now, so it will be interesting to see if the Braves can hold them off. I had the Braves winning this division, but now I am not so sure. The Clippers are starting to slump here in the 2nd half, as the Iron Pigs are starting to warm up. My money is still with the Clippers, but the Iron Pigs are going to have a lot to say about that before the end of the season. Can the Clippers return to where they were 2 months ago or is the their norm? If so the Iron Pigs may end up champs again in the Northern Division. As the Tourists and the Barons are fighting over the top slot, the Blue Crabs made a deal getting themselves an ace that has put them right back in the middle of things. The Blue Crabs are the hottest team, the Tourists acquired the biggest name, and the Barons didn't do a whole lot. I think this is going to come down to a 2 team race between the Tourists and the Blue Crabs, but the Barons would like to prove me wrong. The Cavaliers gained another 2 games, winning 15 games in July. The Cardinals are playing good ball, but they big lead the Cav's have is going to prove to be too much. The Cav's pitching staff isn't as good as it has been in the past, but its still the best in the league. With an 18 game lead the division is theirs if they can stay healthy.

He has slumped of late, but that is understandable. We have called up our #1 pick from the 2019 draft Mark Bolton to be the back up. Bolton will split time with O'D, but O'D will be our primary starter. Augusto Rodriguez: strained oblique, 2 weeks Other/Roster News: none GM Notes: Janchez now has 27 steals and 21 HR's, he is on pace to hit the 30/30 mark. He is putting together an awesome/surprising season. I knew he was good, but he has taken it to another level this season. Here is a look at the all-time 30/30 club: 2013 Pablo Freitas (NFK) 31/33 2015 Roberto Perez (BAL/NFK) 31/42 2017 Roberto Perez (NFK) 34/54 Mark Bolton and Mario Gomez are doing their part, even if its only for a game or six. Gomez is show that he can play up with the big guys, last season in 5 games with the Cav's he went 2-17, this season in 6 games he is 12-24. The 22-year-old may end up with a permenant slot in the Cav's offense... Bolton had a debut to remember, going 4-5, and we will keep an eye on him. He may be force us to trade away O'D and keep Diaz and him as the 1-2 next season. I have questions about his bat, but if this is any indication it could have a good future in NFK. My scout, Alexis Shelton, is telling me I have 5 guys in AAA ready to come up, and four of them are pitchers. The Yokohama team is #1 in the league again and is the favorite to win the Championship, so I am not sure who will get the call in September. I will bring up a couple of those guys such as Rafael Rodriguez and maybe a starter. Seems like we will have to free up some bullpen/rotation space this off-season. Matt Hollis is on fire right now which makes me feel better about him, however, it will make it a lot harder to trade him if it comes to that. This rotation has been great and with the development of Paul Brown could be one of the top 3 rotations in Cavaliers history. I gave Dalton Whitaker a nice extension to keep him Norfolk for the next 4 years, hopefully to close out his career here. And after a lights out May he has struggled... June: 0-1 5.84, 8 SV, July: 1-2 4.91, 6 SV, August: 0-1 5.40, 2 SV. I want that April/May version back. Alejandro Diaz, Fractured Thumb, 1-2 weeks. Other/Roster News: none GM Notes: I went into this week questioning my team and wondering how we would do against the first place teams in the Eastern Division and we came out unscathed and neither one of those teams are in first anymore. That gives me some confidence about this team and the playoffs... however the bullpen seems a little suspect and I am not sure if I should be concerned by their performance. I should probably let Turcotte go now, he is driving me crazy with his pitching decisions. Arthur Ray, the bench coach, will be taking over in 2023 when Turcottes contract runs out. I think it would be wrong to fire someone at this point in the season, might kill morale and that would be awful. I am starting to feel that we can make it the Championship game this season. I have a lot of depth and a lot of just average players. Do I need that superstar on offense to win the title? We have always seemed to have one, 2x MVP Roberto Perez, MVP Francsico Reyes... is that what I am missing? That bonafide superstar? Pitching just getting me there but offense is what puts me us over the top? I am starting to wonder. Maybe I have put too much into pitching and overlooked what I really need. Mario Gomez has been doing a fine job with is bat during his trial period, but his glove is a little shaky. He did a pretty good job in AAA, but his efficiency has dropped since coming up. Yes its only been 8 games, but his .941 Pct and -0.3 ZR aren't selling me on him being my future 3B. He had a .986/+6.6 in AAA, so hopefully that will come back around. He has about a week or two left before AgRod is back at SS... I could waive Mauro Candelaria, but that wouldn't be a proper way to say by to a Norfolk "guy". Ten years he deserves a little more than that. Lewes pitching coach Bill Gillespie says all he doing is what he is paid to do, coach, when implementing a regimen requiring his staff to put in more hours. "Every pitcher has a throw-off day between appearances, now I want to extend that time, when it happens, or have them add a day. Simple," Gillespie adds, "do more, get more." When pressed to explain his philosophy, was quick to make the point that, "The key to improving what a pitcher does isn't focusing on his pushups, fancy weight training techniques, this arm exercise or that one. What makes a guy throw better, and with more confidence, is throwing." Lewes's owner Bob Bell remarks that a growing number of management teams are embracing philosophies that protect pitchers because of the financial investments involved and Gillespie's new approach is cutting directly against that grain. "It's up to Gentry whether this translates into more innings pitched. It's up to Gillespie to make sure it's effective." Milestones: Dalton Whitaker picked up save #300 this week, making him the first player in DBL history reach that historic number. Whitaker has been the closer in Norfolk since 2016, a season which Whitaker set the mark for saves in a season with 52. He has posted over 40 saves every season, except in 2021 when he posted 37. On his career Whitaker has a .882 SV% (300/340). Top 5: Dalton Whitaker: 300 Brent Wagner: 283 (retired) Aaron Nicholas: 255 Wilson Acosta: 252 Carlos Rodriguez: 251 "I just had a feeling that today was the day," Whitaker told reporters after the game, a 5-2 Norfolk Cavaliers win over the Baltimore Barons. "I was a bit nervous before the game, but there wasn't much time for nerves once I started to warm up."

Augusto Rodriguez, Strained Oblique, 2 days Alejandro Diaz, Fractured Thumb, 3 days Other/Roster News: Miguel Contreras gave up 10 hits for the second time this season and 5 runs for the first. He is having yet another steallar year. GM Notes: With the injury to Gomez, Mauro Candelaria will get a few starts, at least until Augusto Rodriguez returns from the DL. Should be early this week. Mauro hasn't been happy with his role this season with the Cavaliers, playing only part time. Due to a pluthera of injuries I didn't feel like starting him was a good idea. I will be curious to see where he ends up next year after he becomes a free agent. He has been an important member of the Cavaliers family since 2013, collecting 1222* hits, 226* dboubles, 500 RBI, 619* Runs and playing 1163* games. * are Cavaliers records, as of today. Matt Hollis seems to be dealing, after struggling the 2nd half last season and some of the first part of this year. He has just bene lights out after the all-star break. And with him throwing as he is, this rotation keeps getting better. If Hollis and Brown win 2 more games this will be our first season we have 5 starters with 15+ wins. Prety impressive. According to my scout we have 5 players in AAA ready to move on up. I just don't have room for them. 4 pitches, and one position player. Goes to show you how deep the AAA team is. As you move down our minor league system it gets weaker, but we should be good for next season. I am really curious about what will become of this organization's minors in 2-3 years. I could dump Hollis and Lewis this off-season and get some good youth... would that really be worth it however. Six more weeks before the playoffs. I am feeling good about this team. He will miss another week. GM Notes: Augusto Rodriguez came back after missing 4 weeks and was inserted back at SS, Rafael Rodriguez was sent back down to AAA. Rafael went 1-0 in 2 games, and he will be back up in September. Alejandro Diaz has completed his stint on the DL and will be sent to AAA for a short rehab assignment. Mark Bolton is hitting .281-0-3 in 9 games (32 AB's), and will continue to play the role of the back-up till Diaz returns. This was an awful week. I guess I said too many good things last week gave myself too much confidence in this team. But we just got swept by the Richmond Cardinals! They are the 2nd best team in our division, and we were playing in Richmond, but we shouldn't get swept by them. We are too good for that! I, at least, thought our bullpen was better than that... and our offense has to be better than that, if we expect to compete in the playoffs!! King Brock where have you gone??? Our bullpen ERA went up .02 points our Def Eff went down .002 points and we dropped form #2 in runs scored to #3. Come September 1 you will see more pitchers on this roster. Derek Carter and Dalton Whitaker continue to struggle in the pen. Did I really resign Whitaker?? Carter will be dealt this off-season... This year its not about winning the AAA championship and I will bring up more kids from the minors to help us out for the last month of the season. In hopes to keep some of these guys fresh and ready to go for the playoffs. Tom Dundee last year won the AAA MVP Award going .319-42-124, this season he has followed that up with a solid .311-24-92, so far, but Henry Hamer is stealing the show in AAA. Hamer was acquired from the Blue Jays for Pat Hall 3 years ago, and then took a huge ratings hit. His power has developed, his contact and gap has developed and he is now ready for the bigs. So far this season in AAA he is raking hitting .374-50-131 one of the best seasons ever. And there is still 3 weeks left in the season. Dalton Whitaker has had 2 months with an ERA under 4.91, April and May and they were both under 2.00! I think at 35 he is starting to suffer from fatigue... maybe that 5 year extension wasn't such a great idea. I just wanted him to finish his career in Orange and Blue. He won't be the closer, however, for much longer from what I can tell. He has converted 86.4% of his save opportunites (44) this season, a career low... I looked back through history of the Cavaliers with Brown and Hollis both at 14 wins, this is only the 2nd time that we have had 5 starters with 14+ wins, the last time was last year, surprisingly enough. Here is this history of pitchers with 10+ wins in Cavaliers history 2013: 18-14-12 2014: 16-16-13-11-10 2015: 19-18-14-12 2016: 19-19-17-14-10 2017: 23-23-15-14-12 2018: 23-21-16-15-12-10 (RP Will Rose went 10-1) 2019: 20-18-17-13 2020: 22-19-18-17 2021: 21-19-15-14-12 2022: 16-16-15-14-14 (thru 8/29) I have always liked having strong pitching staffs and this years rotation is one of the best I have had in Norfolk. It will be interesting to see how we end up. I looked up Will Rose because I was wondering whatever happened to him. He wasn't signed this season, after pitching in 29 games with us last year. That 2019 injury truly ruined his career. Around the League: Standings Leaders DE Southern: Lewes Braves 88-42 (+13/M 20) DE Northern: Milford Clippers 72-58 (+7/M 26) MV Eastern: Baltimore Barons 75-55 (+5/M28) MV Western: Norfolk Cavaliers 89-41 (+20/M13) Players of the Week: Delaware: Dave Simmons (Dover Generals) 13-26, HR, 6 RBI's MarVa: Manuel Martinez (Baltimore Barons) 12-26, 4 HR's, 7 RBI's Power Rankings: 1) Lewes Braves (129.8) 2) Norfolk Cavaliers (122.2) 3) Baltimore Barons (112.8) 4) Dover Generals (108.8) 5) Ocean City Tourists (104.9) News: Another week of no news around the DBL. Only one news story and it really wasn't worthy of being a news story... Just Rudy Richards of the Milton Brewers complaining that there are rumors of his departure from the Brewers. Richards is a lefty who has thrown in 68 games this season going 1-5 4.87.

August 2022 - In Review
August Award Winners
Delaware Conference Monthly Awards DEConf's Top Hitter Named: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 37-year-old Totoya Ogawa put together a solid offensive month for Lewes and was crowned August's top batter in the Delaware Conference. He batted .277 with 6 home runs, 28 RBIs and 21 runs scored. In 122 games this year Ogawa has posted a .259 average and put up these numbers: 19 home runs, 79 RBIs and 75 runs scored. Lewes's Díaz Chosen August's Best in DEConf: In August, Cristóbal Díaz tore through the Delaware Conference like a seasoned veteran -- quite impressive for a player only 24 years old. The young Lewes starter posted a 5-0 mark and an ERA of 0.00 to earn the Pitcher of the Month award. In 44.1 innings he collected 39 strikeouts while limiting the opposition to a .129 average. This year Díaz has fashioned a 17-2 mark, 1.61 ERA and pitched 178.2 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .191 against him and he has logged 183 strikeouts. Norris Wins DEConf Rookie Award: For the last thirty days he outperformed all the other newcomers in the Delaware Conference. So it was no surprise that Dover's shortstop Keith Norris took the Rookie of the Month honors today. In August he hit .287 as he ran up some impressive offensive numbers. In 26 games he collected 25 hits, 2 home runs, 7 RBIs and 10 runs scored. So far this season Norris has put up a .289 batting average with 28 hits, 2 home runs and 9 RBIs. MarVa Conference Monthly Awards Reyes Top Hitter in MVConf in August: Francisco Reyes battered MarVa Conference pitchers all August and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award. "I've been around DELMARVA Baseball League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 32-year-old Reyes told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month." In 28 games, Reyes hit .284 with 14 home runs, 33 RBIs and scored 24 runs. This year Reyes has hit at a .305 clip with 114 RBIs, 38 home runs and 82 runs scored. Pye Gets August's Top Pitcher Trophy: Mike Pye has made fans throughout DELMARVA Baseball League take notice over the past month with an exceptional 5-1 record. No pitcher in the MarVa Conference threw better in August, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today. In 6 starts Pye compiled a 2.36 ERA, putting up a 5-1 record, striking out 43 and tossing 42 innings. This season Pye has fanned 155 in 148 innings and collected a 11-8 record with a 3.77 ERA. MarVa Conference Names Rookie of Month: A veritable toddler to the MarVa Conference, Carlos Peralta just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for August. Over the past month the 21-year-old center fielder for Ellicott City hit .302 with 29 hits, 5 home runs and 23 RBI. He also logged 4 walks and compiled a .330 on-base percentage. Presently Peralta is hitting .288 with 27 home runs and 73 RBIs. He has played in 113 games and scored 60 times. The Braves held off the Generals and have turned on the heat, taking a huge 15 game lead with only 30 to play. The Braves look to be heading to the playoffs for the 4th straight year. The Clippers won it all last season, their frist ever in the post-season and this year they want to prove 2021 wasn't a fluke. The Iron Pigs are charging up the ranks, gaining 2 games in August and are only 4 out. The Clippers will look to hold them off and duplicate their 2021 division winning success. The Clippers and Pigs play a big 3 game series in 3 weeks, the last of their games against each other. The Blue Crabs made a push, but have fallen, the Tourists held a piece of the lead 31 days ago, but have slumped. The Barons have continued to play consistent and now own a 3 game lead. This division should be a fun one to watch over the next month. The Barons have the easiest schedule of the bunch, but do play the Braves, and the Blue Crabs (3). The Tourists and the Barons will nto see each other the rest of the way. The Cav's won a season high 21 games in August and have gained 3 games. With a magic number 9, they should easily win the title and get some of their older veterans rested up for the play-offs, something the failed to do last year. After winning 4 in a row (2016-2019) the Cav's have failed to make the Championship Series. This year they are out to buck that trend.

I am guessing there will be a few more down the road as well. I removed the "Set-up" secondary role from Derek Carter and assigne dhim to be used less often. After posting a 1.17 ERA in 64 games 2 years ago, and a 1.79 ERA in 67 games last year, Carter has slumped all season posting a 5.23 ERA in 30 games this year. He has fallen out of favor by me and will be pushed down the pitching line. I am going to try to get the 3 catchers some AB's, but John O'D will be my primary guy, unless Diaz or Bolton start to impress. John is hitting .216-9-39 (245 AB's), Diaz: .266-11-40 (256 AB's) and Bolton .289-0-3 (38 AB's) not bad production from behind the dish. Mario Gomez was activated off the DL and sent down to AAA. I figured more AB's in AAA would do him better, plus he has a shot to hit .400. He will be back up for the final week or two. GM Notes: It doesn't look like Javier Janchez or Jeff Lewis will hit the 30/30 club this year, but they both will be close. Janchez has 22 HR's and 30 SB's, Lewis has 24 HR's and 28 SB's. I thought this was going to be the year that one of them would hit that mark. A late slump for Janchez and Lewis has never hit 30 HR's in a season. But I really thought it was going to happen. Had a couple of scares this week. O'Donegan and Contreras were pulled from games early because of injury, but lucky for us they were both small day-to-day ones. Losing O'D might not be that bad with Diaz and Bolton capable of doing the job, but a loss of Contrears could be devistating. I am thinking that I may have to go to a 6 man rotation or skip MC's next start. I need him 100% for a Championship push. As long we can stay healthy, I am not exactly sure what I am going to do with my rotation in the playoffs. Maybe I shouldn't be talking about this in fear of jinxing me, but I have 5 starters that are rocking right now. And I can't see any reason why I would want to go with a 5 man rotation in the playoffs. Maybe it will depend on who I play. Not sure. I will cross that bridge when I get there. After a rocky week last week, we bounced back. Whitaker took home 2 saves this week after an awful week last week. I am worried about him, will he be able to do the job in the playoffs? Is he finally getting tired after 10 years on the bump? He still has great stuff, so I am hoping that means he will be alright. Fingers crossed. Cavaliers starting pitcher, Matt Hollis, said, "Every guy they brought in played a significant part in this team winning. That's all you can ask for of the front office." Game 142: Virginia Beach 0, Norfolk 3 Miguel Contreras (18-2): 8.0 IP, 2 H, 3 K Dalton Whitaker (SV 42): 1.0 IP, BB, 3 K Tom Anderson: 2-4, 2B, RBI Ramon Granados: 2-3, 2B, RBI H: 9, LOB: 9 Cavaliers News: Injuries: Jeff Lewis, broken knee cap, 4-5 months Well this is painful in more ways than one. I was planning on trading Lewis this off-season, but I guess I won't be able to do that. Mr. Consistentecy will be missed, he was the part of the lineup that hit all the time. Looks like his MVP chances may be going down the drain as well... On the season Lewis hit .327-24-82, scored 103 runs, added 25 2B's, 8 triples and stole 28 bases in 34 attempts. This is just a huge blow to this offense that has been sputtering along. Sergio Galvez will move from 1B to LF and Francisco Gallegos will be the starts at 1B. I will have to do some thinking and possible bring up Tom Dundee and/or Henry Hamer, both who are crushing in AAA. I will stick with this for a little bit, but I am thinking Dundee will be getting the call soon. Galvez will move into the lead-off slot for the tiem being. Other/Roster News: none GM Notes: Takayuki Iemochi has 18 wins on the season and finished the past 2 years with 19. Will he be able to hit that elusive 20 game win mark this year? It will be interesting to see if he can he should have enough starts. I will be watching him closely, I rooted for him last year to do it and will be again this year. I am glad to see Miguel bounce back from his D2D injury. If we lost him that would be very painful. With the way the staff is going, its going to be hard to bet against this team. I just have to hope the offense can find a replacment for Lewis's run production. I am trying to give Gallegos a chance, but after he slumped a little this week, I am thinking Hamer will be brought up to get a chance. I will just have to shift Lewis to the 60-day DL to free up a slot on the 40-man. I am torn about what to do with the staff, I think i will be moving to a 6-man rotation for the last 2 weeks of the year, but I am not sure abou that. I would hate to give them time off just for them to lose their momentum. A lot of stuff to think about over the final 20 games, but it is nice to have the division clinched and the titel under our belt. 10 years, 8 division titles. Can't be that type of success. I have 4 guys in AAA that must be called up, but I don't want to take away took much time from the regular starters, is that wrong? 1) Bernardo Velez, who may end up being my starting 2B next year, depending on how much of a "blow-up" i do this off season. .318-13-73, 41 SB, 118 Runs 2) Mario Gomez who was up for a nice stay earlier, really needs to be get back up, but who sits? Anderson? Rodriguez? Dooley? Gomez who might not of been sent down if he didn't get hurt returned on fire. On the season 74 G: .413-14-71. 3) Tom Dundee, last years AAA-MVP is having another solid season. He is going to make it tough to keep the current OF in tact for next season. Dundee is a solid fielder with a lot of power, and would probably win the MVP again if it wasn't for the next guy. .330-32-112, 111 Runs 4) The truth about Henry Hamer is I traded for him and he took a huge ratings hit and I wrote him off, but something happened this off-season. After hitting on .247-9-46 in AA last season Hamer came to camp in shape and ready to prove the nay-sayers wrong. All he has done is set AAA records for HR's and RBI's, while having one of the best seasons ever. .372-55-145 Galvez will be heading back to 1B while Hamer gets his chance to prove himself in Norfolk, even at the ripe age of 22. Perez who is 25, had a solid AAA season and he figures to play a role in the Cavaliers rotation/bullpen in the future. He will be out 4-5 months. Other/Roster News: Jeff Lewis was moved from the 11-day DL to the 60-day DL and Henry Hamer was added to the 40-man roster and placed on the active roster. With no day's off over the next 14 games, Claudio Perez was added to the starting rotation, so we will be going with a 6-man rotation over the next 2 weeks. With Perez getting hurt we made another call-up to the minors bring up Armando Lopez, who started 24 games for the Cav's last season, and has put up decent AAA numbers this year (15-7 3.94). He will take over the #6 slot in the rotation. GM Notes: The bullpen has struggled, or at least been up and down of late. Rafael Rodriguez who has been solid for me over the past two years has really struggled this year (7 G, 9.1 IP, 11 H, 11 ER, 8 BB 9 K). To the point he I am sending him to AAA, and bringing up Luis Martinez who has been the closer for our AAA team. With Claudio Perez on the 60-day DL, he is taking that slot. Means we will have some dealing to do this off-season so we don't lose these guys. Only losing on free-agent as it is now. Hamer finished the first week 5-15 (.333) with an RBI. He didn't walk and struck out 3 times. Maybe this week he will show off some of that "16" power. Most people have tried to run Augusto Rodriguez out of town, but I have been ademant at keeping him around, and this year he proved that it was a good idea. He was one of those guys I signed to a long-term deal, having him under contract for 6 more years. Last season he had an off year with the bat (.245-4-50) and the glove (12 errors, .980, 4.44 RF), but this year he bounced back on both sides hitting (.320-4-30) and fielding (3 errors, .993, 4.57 RF). Granted he is goign to end up playing 30 games less than he has the past 2 seasons, but that might be the new "norm". We will ahve to see... His range has taken a huge drop off, posting over 11 in his first 4-full years, it dropped to 6.6 last season and 2.4 this year. Hmm.. What a crazy week for Matt Hollis, after getting lit up in the first game of the week, throws 8 shut-out innings in his second. That is the thing about him, when he is off, he is OFF. I have to decide weather to use him against the Barons in the frist round of the playoffs (assuming they win). this season he is 0-2 8.74 against them, with a .300 BABIP. He struggled last season against them as well. My biggest dilema over the next 2 weeks. But whatever it is, I am not a fan, as Tom Anderson is now out 5-6 weeks, meaning he will most likely miss the playoffs. Anderson was hitting .290-11-56 after a slow start, which included a lot of K's he finally found his groove. Looks like I will be plucking yet another guy from the AAA roster, Mario Gomez, will be on his way back up and will be playing 3rd. I don't think the Baystars will win the title this year with as many players that have been pulled from them, but oh-well, they won it last year. Gomez is hitting .409-14-76 in AAA and will be the starting 3B for the rest of the season (and probably the playoffs). Other/Roster News: After a frist round sweept, the Yokahoma Baystars season was over and the rest of the clan came up to join the Cavaliers: OF Tom Dundee OF John Stewart RP Felix Deliz RP David Moran SP Jesus Ramirez RP Rafeal Rodrigeuz C Pete Alexander 2B Bernardo Velez Bring the active roster up to 37 players. GM Notes: Starters ERA up, Bullpen ERA up, Def Eff. Down, not what I like to see... That is my bread and butter without the pitching defense I will have to rely on the offense and we are having some issues scoring runs. Starting to get nervous, missing 2 "big" bats doesnt' help us out. Hamer (.292-2-7) and Gomez (.471-1-5) have helped with the loss of Anderson and Lewis showing me that maybe I don't need to be so nervous about my offense. I never really thought Gomez was going to make it to the bigs, but he made some noise last year in AAA and got a cup of coffee, but after this year, and his performance with the big club, he is going to get a good luck next spring. A solid 3B, but with questionable range, and a decent bat, he may make it easier moving Dooley or Anderson this fall. Dooley is arbitration eligible, Anderson is due $5. Plus he was a real disappointment for me his year (.290-11-56). I think I gave him too much money as well, in the contract we agreed to last year. Contreras and Iemochi both have 19 wins, we will see if either one can hit 20. They both should get 1 more starts. Contreras however may get shut down a little early to prepare for the playoffs. Actually Miguel may be shut down, I am not 100% sure yet. Dalton seems to be on a nice roll, which makes me feel better about him. It just when he is bad he is bad. He just went on a string of 7 games without giving up a run, can't really beat that. He is 47/54 in save opportunities, but the biggest difference that I have seen in Dalton over the years is his K's. His best is 13.16 K/9, and this year he is down to 10.49, only the 2nd time in his career where he has been under 11. The first was his rookie year, in 2013 when he posted 10.27. My faith in him is questionable... With six game sto go Janchez needs 5 HR's to hit the 30/30 mark, its not looking good. But he shoudl be proud of his season he may even get an MVP vote or two in the end. Rodriguez finishes the year hitting .318-4-31, in 107 games. Hopefully he earned the respect back from some of his naysayers. With Rodriguez out, my best two short-stops, Augusto Roriguez and Tom Anderson are out. The next best SS is Joe Chambers and Denny Dooley. Looks like Dooley or Mario Reyes will play short, but losing both Anderson and Rodriguez is a pretty big deal. I have elected to go with Dooley at SS and Mario Candelaria at 2nd. Reyes and Velez will both be looked at as well, for possible the 2B job during the playoffs. Candy just isn't hitting the ball... or I could get a little crazy and play Ramon Granados at 2B. He has played 30 games there this season, posting a .967 FPct, -1.8 ZR and has committed 2 errors in 123.0 innings. It would be a better bat in the game, but he would have to be pulled in the 6th for D purposes. Its a thought... Granados was pulled form the game in the 4th inning, after suffering an injury while making a play on defense. The severity of the injury is unknown, and I hope I hear before the start of the playoffs. This has been a rough final month in regards to posistion players... ugh. Other/Roster News: none GM Notes: During last years off-season I was watching the trade wire and I saw that the #19 prospect (in 2021), Miguel Angel Gonzalez, was traded to the Milford Clippers for almost nothing. So I decided to see if they would trade him to me for just about the same. They were willing to deal, I traded a 2* outfielder (Sanho Masarenahas: .263-2-12 / 24 G) and 10th round pick and I got him. Gonzalez spent 3 years in the international complex before getting the call up in 2021. This year we had him start the season in AA and after 14 starts (11-1 1.77) he earned a call-up to AAA, where he did just as good (11-2 2.94). This 21-yr old is going to be star and hopefully he can work on his control and he will be with the big-league club in no time. He reminds many people of Paul Brown, which is great praise considering what Brown has done this year. Gonzalez dropped to the 97 on the top 100, but I expect him to see a bump in 2023. Winning 113 games is quite an impresive feat for this team Our starting rotation turned out to be the best 1-5 in Cavaliers history: Miguel Contreras: 19-2 2.02 Matt Hollis: 17-6 2.95 Cornell Pearson: 19-6 3.18 Paul Brown: 17-6 3.83 Takayuki Iemochi: 20-6 2.73 After 2 back-to-back 19 win seasons Iemochi finally hit that magical 20 number. Vaughan Griffith pithced out of the pen all season this year and wow did he do an impressive job. I would like to put him in the rotation, but after his impressive season as the set-up man it might be hard to. On the season Griffith went 5-1 1.70, allowing just 9 ER in 47.2 IP. The season ended well for wins vs loses, but painfully for health. I will have a couple big roster decisiosn to make before the playoffs start, but I am happy with the way we are playing. A little nervous out the health of my hitters however... Lets just get the playoffs going that way we can see how it goes... I am ready to win Championship #6! September in Review - 2022
August Award Winners
September 2022 Award Winners Delaware Conference Monthly Awards Torrid September Gets van den Burgt DEConf #1 Batter Trophy: Ole van den Burgt is not used to being associated with Batter of the Month-caliber players, but today the Milton right fielder joined that select company when the Delaware Conference announced the results of September's voting. van den Burgt totaled 35 hits, 10 walks, 6 home runs, 17 RBIs and 28 runs scored last month to put together a .449 batting average and .522 on-base percentage. For the season van den Burgt is hitting .283, batted in 55 runs with 16 home runs and 80 runs scored. Pitcher of the Month Named in DEConf: Shawn Brock nailed down September's Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month award today, adding pressure on Wilmington to get a deal done before the 28-year-old becomes a free agent. Brock seems unfazed by the talk. "We get a deal done or we don't," he told reporters, "I'm not worrying about next year. Worrying about next year isn't what wins awards, you know?" He fashioned a 4-0 record, reeled off 25 strikeouts, worked 40.2 innings and held batters to a .191 average for the month as he posted a 1.99 ERA. On his stats sheet this season Brock shows a 13-9 record, 33 starts, 198.1 innings, 124 strikeouts and a 4.13 ERA. DEConf Selects Rookie Star of the Month: Jesús Muńóz is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Delaware Conference Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers. In September the Wilmington hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .341 average with 30 hits, 1 home run and 9 RBIs. This season Muńóz is hitting at a .246 pace with 2 home runs, 36 RBIs and has scored 37 times. MarVa Conference Monthly Awards Reyes Wins MVConf's Best Bat Trophy: Francisco Reyes received the MarVa Conference Batter of the Month trophy earlier today for his efforts at the plate this last month. "He might be getting older," Ocean City's manager told reporters, "But he's been around long enough to know what it takes to put a stretch such as this together... and he doesn't keep that to himself. He's always talking to the younger guys in the clubhouse helping 'em any way they'll let him. Francisco's value to our team goes farther than the numbers he puts up on the field." To win the honor Reyes put up a .352 batting average, 6 home runs, 26 RBIs and scored 24 times in September. In 159 games this season Reyes has compiled a .313 batting average with 199 hits and 44 home runs. He has also scored 106 times and knocked in 140 runs. Ports Starter Wins MVConf Pitching Award: The Salisbury Ports owe Pablo García a lot for his performance this past month. One of the league's most dominant starters in September, García tore up the opposition with a fine 4-0 mark on his way to the MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month award. "When you're pitching this well," analyzed García, "it's a lot easier to come to the park. I don't judge my performance by the stats, I judge it -- the team judges it -- by the score of the game. I could say I'm tossing electric stuff right now and that would go over big. But if I toss that same stuff -- exact same pitch selection and location -- and they bang me around tomorrow, I was awful. That's the way baseball is." It was García who did the banging in September as he tossed up 20 strikeouts in 43 innings, holding opponents to a .201 average and posting a 1.88 ERA. To date this season García is 13-12 with 34 starts and an ERA of 3.63 with 143 strikeouts in 201 innings. MarVa Conference Names Rookie of Month: Youngster Doug Gorden emerged as the latest MarVa Conference Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Baltimore deserved the honor, batting .338 with 2 home runs and 14 runs batted in. Is the month of September a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Gorden enjoy the limelight. So far this season Gorden is batting .300 with 3 home runs. League Leaders as of October 3, 2022 (End of Season) Delaware Conference League Leaders ![]() ![]() End of the Year Award Front Runners: Silver Slugger: Claude Bond (.325-35-109 / 8.7 WAR), Eduardo Greene (.283-43-115 / 3.9 WAR), Andy Kohl (.278-35-120 / 4.4 WAR) Golden Arm: Robert Walker (25-6 2.26 / 5.6 WAR), Cristobal Diaz (20-3 1.51 / 8.6 WAR) Newcomer: Ian Sellers (.271-11-43), Anthony Lucarelli (.250-5-55), Adam Rowe (.252-9-52) The Golden Arm award is going to be interesting. Too bad the game doesn't give out joint awards, because these two guys have seasons that will be hard to ever be recreated. I think Diaz might actually sneak away with the award even though Walker won a record 25 games... MarVa Conference League Leaders ![]() ![]() End of the Year Award Front Runners: Silver Slugger: Mike Simmons (.303-33-89 / 7.6 WAR), Javier Janchez (.331-27-89, 35 SB / 7.6 WAR), Augusto Silva (.304-36-121, 19 SB / 5.8 WAR) Golden Arm: Miguel Contreras (19-2 2.02 / 8.9 WAR), Marcos Estrada (16-7 2.26 / 9.5 WAR), Takayuki Iemochi (20-6 2.73 / 6.1 WAR) Newcomer: Jose Lopez (.296-20-87), Carlos Peralta (.271-27-75), Martin Scott (.228-23-85) Standings as of October 3, 2022 (Final Standings) ![]() The Lewes Braves turned on the after-burners and just uplled away from the rest of the pack to take home the division title. The Braves have 3 of the games top lefties in their rotation with Diaz, Walker and Moran (who just returned from missing 9 months) and a bullpen to boot. This team is built for success. The Clippers slumped and the Iron Pigs wamred up, but in the end the Clippers were able to hold of the Pigs. They are a well rounded team who matches up well with anyone. They won their final 2 games to seal the deal after losing 6 straight. The Tourists tried to their hardest to run down the Barons, but in the end fell just one game shy. The Barons went into a tail spin going 1-7 in the final week, which allowed the tourist to climb within one game. A last game loss put the Tourists on alert, a win ties the Barons, but the Tourists fell apart losing 13-1 to the Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs who finished with 68 wins. Heat break from the Tourists, joy for the Barons. The Cavaliers finished strong, having their best 2 months of the year, the final two months of the season. Despite the injuries, youth stepped up helping them keep on winning. With an early clinching there was no pressure on the Cav's or their youth.

2022 Delaware Conference Preview
Milford Clippers
Northern Division Champion - 84-78 .519 Playoff Appearances: 2 (2021, 2022) DBL Championsihps: 1 (2021) Injuries SS Tom Mendez (5-6 Months) MR Ron Martin (1 week) Key Players: Eduardo Green: .283-43-115 Jose Matos: 12-10 3.66 Seth Bennet: 9-6 2.34 Key to Victory: Score runs. The Clippers scored the 2nd most runs in the DE Conference this year, but they are going up against one of the games, if not the games, best pitching staff. If they want to win they have to score runs. Lewes Braves Southern Division Champion - 110-52 .679 Playoff Appearances: 5 (2015, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022) DBL Championsihps: 2 (2015, 2020) Injuries: SP Terry Taylor (4 weeks) MR Manuel Romero (4 weeks) SP Julian Codne (3-4 months) Key Players: SP Cristobal Diaz (20-3 1.51) SP Robert Walker (25-6 2.26) SP Julian Moran (10-5 2.64) Key to Victory: Do what they do best. Score some runs and don't let the opponent cross the plate. The Braves have 3 top lefties going games 1-2-3, which some see as a disadvantage. Diaz set the record for best ERA by a SP, and Walker set the record for most wins by a pitcher. As long as they continue to throw the ball strong they will be tough to beat. Delaware Conference Prediction: Lewes Braves win the series in 5 games. I just don't see the Clippers being able to handel the pitching of the Braves. Diaz, Moran, and Walker will prove to be just too tough.

2022 MarVa Conference Preview
Baltimore Barons
Eastern Division Champion - 93-69 .574 Playoff Appearances: 3 (2020, 2021, 2022) DBL Championsihps: 0 Injuries: SP Bill Taylor (2 months) Key Players: RF Manuel Martinez (.300-16-69) 3B Mike Taylor (.323-19-93) 2B Justin Collins (.306-19-71) SP Vincent Parker (18-9 3.93) Key to Victory: The Barons will be going up against the best pitching staff in the MarVa Conference and to win they will need to be patient, and get to the Cavaliers bullpen. The Barons don't have a whole lot of power, so working the count will be their best chance to move on. Norfolk Cavaliers Western Division Champion - 113-49 .698 Playoff Appearances: 8 (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022) DBL Championsihps: 5 (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019) Injuries: RF Jeff Lewis (4 months) 3B Tom Anderson (3 weeks) SS Augusto Rodriguez (4-5 weeks) CF Ramon Granados (pending, but left off roster) SP Claudio Perez (4 months) Key Players: CF Javier Janchez (.331-27-89) SP Miguel Contreras (19-2 2.02) DH King Brock (.281-31-108) Key to Victory: The Cav's are missing 3 players from their starting line-up, which is going to put more pressure on the starting pitching. To win this series they will need solid starting pitching. The bullpen has struggled, the offense isn't what it was, they is starters, going deep in the game. MarVa Conference Prediction: Norfolk Cavaliers in 6 This was a tough one to pick. I almost went with the Barons, but this starting rotation has performed so well it just hard to go against them. I think it will be a tough series, and the Cav's want some revenge on the team that has knocked them out of the playoffs the past 2 seasons. Always a fun series to play. This should be a long fought, tough series.

Norfolk Cavaliers Playoff Preperations
Norfolk Cavaliers playoff Roster
With the unknown status of Ramon Granados I had to remove him from the roster. If he is out day-to-day then its okay, because I added Henry Hamer and Tom Dundee. If Granados was healthy I would of gone with a 10 man staff instead I will be using an 11 man staff. The rotation I am using a 4 man rotation and surprisingly Matt Hollis will not be a part of it. Hollis will be sent to the bullpen for this first round. The decisions wasn't an easy one for me, but Hollis struggled against the Barons this year and the other 3 guys didn't. We will see how this one turns out for me... Rotation: 1) Miguel Contreras 2) Takayuki Iemochi 3) Cornell Person 4) Paul Brown The bullpen will consist of: Dalton Whitaker (CL) Yoo-hyun Kim Vaughan Griffith Derek Carter Dan Nelson Matt Hollis (L) Carlos Coronado (L) Hollis I may reserve for long relief duty, just in case one of those guys struggle. Also, if Iemochi pitches well in game 2, I may end up using Hollis in game 3, just for the sense of a lefty on the hill. I have flexibility. The offense is confusing, with Lewis, Anderson and Rodriguez out I was able to bring up some of the kids and the roster includes Henry Hamer, Mario Gomez and Tom Dundee. I will also, which I am not sure I have ever done this before, will be carrying 3 catchers. C: John O'Donegan Alejandro Diaz Mark Bolton 1B: Sergio Galvez Francisco Gallegos King Brock 2B: Maruo Candelaria Mario Reyes SS: Denny Dooley 3B: Mario Gomez OF: Javier Janchez Wally Lambert Henry Hamer Tom Dundee I am not sure of the lineup just yet, and its possible that I dump Granados to the DL before game 1 and send down Dundee and call up Velez. I don't have a whole lot of back-up help on the infield. Prelimary lineup: 1B Sergio Galvez (L) RF Wallly Lambert (L) C John O'Donegan DH King Brock (L) CF Javier Janchez (L) SS Denny Dooley LF Henry Hamer (L) 3B Mario Gomez 2B Mauro Candelaria/Mario Reyes If I do end up making a last minute roster switch you can expect to see Velez in the starting lineup, only because Reyes and Candy play multiple positions and it will give me a little more flexibility. I know I predicted myself to win in 6, but I don't have a great feeling about this series... there is nothing more than I want to do than beat these Barons. I will hopefully get game 1 (maybe 2) played tonight.... I am just ready to play ball...

2022 Conference Championships - Game 1
MarVa Conference - Game 1:
Game 1: Baltimore Barons @ Norfolk Cavaliers Pregame News: The Cavaliers made a late roster adjustment, placing Ramon Granados on the 11-day DL, and replacing Tom Dundee, who was orginally on the playoff roster with Bernardo Velez. Reyes, Candelaria and Velez are expected to see playing time at 2B during this series. For the past 2 seasons the Cavaliers year has ended with a loss to the Baltimore Barons in the Conference Championships. There is a lot of energy in Norfolk, as they look at exact revenge on the Barons for the past two years. ![]() Inning 1: Top: Contreras gave up a double to the second hitter Manuel Martinez, who moved up to third on a ground out to first by Kent Davis. And with two outs, Mike Taylor hit a routine grounder to third that was booted by Mario Gomez, allowing Martinez to score. O'Donegan gunned down Taylor trying to steal to end the inning. Bottom: It didn't take long for the Cavaliers to answer back as Sergio Galvez hit a 3-2 fastball 353 feet over the right-field wall to lead off the Cavaliers first. That was the Cavaliers could get. Baltimore 1, Norfolk 1 Inning 2: Top: Contreras settled down and shut the Barons down 1-2-3 Bottom: McCord retired the first two hitters, then gave up a 1-1 HR to Mario Gomez, 360 ft down the left-field line, to give the Cavaliers the lead. Baltimore 1, Norfolk 2 Inning 3: Top: Another 1-2-3 inning for Contreras. Bottom: McCord locked in setting the Cavaliers 1-2-3 hitters down in order. Baltimore 1, Norfolk 2 Inning 4: Top: Manuel Martinez singled to lead off the inning, stole 2nd with one out, and moved to third on a fielding error by SS Denny Dooley. But Contreras would get out of the inning, as Wes King grounds out stranding 2 Bottom: Brock, Janchez and Dooley go down 1-2-3, that is 7 in a row for McCord. Baltimore 1, Norfolk 2 Inning 5: Top: A lead-off single is erased by a double-play, followed by a K. Bottom: Hamer walked to get things started, but a quick double-play by the Barons on a Gomez grounder put a halt to anything. Baltimore 1, Norfolk 2 Inning 6: Top: Contreras strikes out the side, including Martinez who was 2-2 on the day. Bottom: Wally Lambert didn't get all of the 1-out 3-1 fastball, but he got enough off it dropping it over the left-field fence 347ft away. The only thing the Cav's had going on, but it was a much wanted insurance run. Baltimore 1, Norfolk 3 Pitch Count: BAL: Bob McCord: 94 pitches 15 stamina NFK: Miguel Contreras: 90 pitches, 11 stamina Inning 7: Top: Mike Taylor leads off the Barons 7th with a 437ft blast to right-center. Contreras settles down and gets out of the inning, walking one and retiring Ed Duke on a fly ball to the warning track. Bottom: Cav's go down 1-2-3. Baltimore 2, Norfolk 3 Inning 8: SUBSTITUTIONS: Vaughan Griffith replaces Miguel Contreras on the hill for the Cavliers. Alejandro Pena is now the catcher, replacing O'Donegan, batting 9th, and Bernardo Velez, comes into to play 2nd replacing Reyes, batting 3rd. Top: With 2 outs and 2 runners on, a walk and a single, Griffith retires Mike Taylor on a line-up to centerfield. Bottom: Mario Gomez leads off the inning with a double down the left-field line, and moves to third on a single by Alejandro Diaz. Galvez singles to left, scoring Gomez and chasing Bob McCord... SUBSTITUTION: Frederick Taylor replaces McCord on the hill for the Barons... A single by Lambert loads the bases for Velez. Velez promptly singles up the middle, scoring Diaz. King Brock doubles in Galvez and Lambert, moving Velez to third. Janchez flies out to center for the first out of the inning, scoring Velez... SUBSTITUTION: Reynaldo Dominguez replaces Taylor on the hill for the Barons... The next two Cav's go down in order, stranding Brock at second. Baltimore 2, Norfolk 8 Inning 9: Top: Vaughan closes out the 9th, retiring 3 of the 4 batters he faces. Baltimore 2, Norfolk 8 W: Miguel Conteras (1-0) L: Bob McCord (0-1) SV: Vaughan Griffith (1) HR: BAL: Mike Taylor (1), NFK: Wally Lambert (1), Sergio Galvez (1), Mario Gomez (1) POG: Sergio Galvez: 2-4, 2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI My Thoughts: I was a little nervous after the top half on the first, but we bounced back. Our defensive isn't what it could be with Anderson and/or Rodriguez in the game, but overall we came through with the sticks. Its nice having a team that can hit the long-ball allows us to get back into the game when we are down... I am glad we jumped out to a 1 game lead, now we just need to continue that for 3 more games. ![]() Delaware Conference - Game 1: The Clippers defense and pitching had one bad inning and that was all the Braves needed, as they took advantage of an error and 2 walks to score 5 runs on 3 hits in the 4th inning. With a 5 run lead the Clippers just couldn't get back against the great pitching of the Braves. Cristobal Diaz only went 5 innings for the Braves allowing a run on 5 hits and a walk, while striking out 6. The Clippers did everything they needed and if you take out that one bad inning, they could of stole the game in Lewes. W: Cristobal Diaz (1-0) L: Jorge Padilla (0-1) HR: Eduardo Greene (1) POG: Milford's Jeremy Jones 4-5, 2B, R, RBI

2022 Conference Championships - Game 2
MarVa Conference - Game 2
Game 2: Baltimore Barons @ Norfolk Cavaliers Pregame News: We got the news that Ramon Granados will be out 2 weeks with a stained oblique, so putting him on the DL allowing me to activate Bernardo Velez turned out to be a good deal. After a big win in Game 1, I have this feeling that game 2 is a must win. I am a little nervous about it, after losing to the Barons the past 2 seasons I just want to take them down and be done with them. I thought about making a line-up change with Velez for Reyes or Candelaria for Dooley, but looking at how well Dooley (2-5) and Reyes (5-13) have hit against Mansanarez I deciced to bust out the same lineup as Game 1. With Hollis 100% ready to go, I am going with my gut and sending Iemochi out to the mound, I have a good feeling about him. ![]() Inning 1: Top: Iemochi sets the Barons down 1-2-3. Bottom: O'Donegan ends the inning after a Lambert walk hitting into the 4-6-3. Baltimore 0, Norfolk 0 Inning 2: Top: Mike Taylor lead off the inning with a single to left, 2 fly-outs later, Taylor moves up to third on a single by Colin Thompson to center. Iemochi strikes out to Carpetner to end the threat. Bottom: King Brock singles to lead off, hoping to get soemthing started for the Cav's. Javier Janchez grounds into the FC. Janchez steals second. Dooley grounds out, moving Janchez to third. Hamer flies out to right ending the inning. Baltimore 0, Norfolk 0 Inning 3: Top: With one out Manuel Martinez triples down the right-field line. With two outs, Kent Davis plates Martinez with a single to left. That was all the Barons could muster. Bottom: With 2 outs, Galvez doubles off the centerfield wall, but is left there when Lambert strikes out. Baltimore 1, Norfolk 0 Inning 4: Top: A one-out single by Wes King is all the Barons get in a quick 4th. Bottom: After a lead-off single by John O'Donegan, King Brock hits a 383 foot shot over the right-center wall, giving the Cav's the lead. A Dooley single is erased by a Hamer double play, but the Cav's have the lead after 4. Baltimore 1, Norfolk 2 Inning 5: Top: Iemochi, makes me smile with a quick 1-2-3, including retiring Martinez how seems to own us. Bottom: With 2-outs Sergio Galvez gives us an insurance run with a 393ft blast to right-center. That was the only thing doing for the Cav's, but it was a big doing. Baltimore 1, Norfolk 3 Inning 6: Top: With one out, Mike Taylor makes Iemochi pay, hitting a 449ft blast over the center-field wall. The HR seemed to shake Iemochi who walks Collins, then gives up a single to King... after, a visit to the mound and some bullpen activity, the game moves on... a single by Thompson loads the bases. But Iemochi strikes out Carptenter and gets Jones to fly out to center. You could hear the crowd of 43,000+ exhale as Janchez made the catch. Bottom: With two outs, Javier Janchez does his thing, giving the Cavaliers another insurance run with a 385ft shot over the right-field wall. That was it for the Cav's. Baltimore 2, Norfolk 4 Pitch Count: BAL: Jesus Mansanarez: 82 pitches, 12 stamina NFK: Takayuki Iemochi: 105 pitches, 20 stamina Inning 7: Top: Iemochi strikes out Martinez, but gives up a double to Gonzalez. Who moves to third on a single by Davis... SUBSTITUTION: Iemochi will be pulled, bringing in Yoo-hyun Kim, who is making his post-season debut... Kim strikes out both hitters he faces, ending any threat. Bottom: Gomez singles with one-out, but the Cav's couldn't get anything going, leaving him on first. Baltimore 2, Norfolk 4 Inning 8: Top: A one-out walk to Thompson, haunts Kim, as he comes around to score on a double by Howard Carpenter... SUBSTITUTIONS: Ed Duke pinch hits for the Barons, Lefty Carlos Coronado replaces Kim on the hill for the Cavaliers... Duke grounds out moving Carpenter to third... SUBSTITUTION: Dan Nelson replaces Coronado, moving Martinez to his weaker left-side... Martinez flies out to deep center, ending the inning. Bottom: The Cav's go down 1-2-3. Baltimore 3, Norfolk 4 Inning 9: SUBSTITUTIONS: Dalton Whitaker comes in to pitch, replacing Dan Nelson. Bernardo Velez comes in replacing Reyes to play 2B. Alejandro Diaz replaces John O'Donegan behind the plate. Top: Gonzalez strikes out for out #1, Kent Davis singles to left. Taylor singles up the middle. Davis is safe at 3rd. With the corners in Collins hits a grounder right at Gavlez. Galvez touches first, Taylor to second. Playing the Pct's I have Whitaker walk King to load the bases... SUBSTITUTION: switch-hitter Chuck Odom replaces Colin Thompson at bat... Odom single to right, scoring Davis and tying the game. Taylor was sent home, but Wally Lambert gunned him down, ending the inning, but after the Barons scored the tying run. Bottom: SUBTITUTION: Arutro Ramirez replaces Mansanarez on the hill for the Barons. Ramirez is an ex-Cavaliers hero... With two outs, Ramirez drills Hamer, but that was the only Cav's base runner. Baltimore 4, Norfolk 4 Thoughts: I have a feeling I am in trouble here, I just don't have the pitching. I could go with Brown if the game gets that going to go long feeling, but right now Whitaker and Carter are my only rested pitches. Hollis is starting tomorrow and Brown game 4. Pearson is exhausted right now and not ready to pitch. Hopefully this doesn't drag on. Whitaker has one more inning in him hopefully. Inning 10: Top: Carpenter leads off the the 10th with a triple. with the infield drawn in pinch-hitter James Walker grounds out. Manuel Martinez is then intentionally walked. With the corners in Gonzales grounds out to first, moving Martinez to second. Kent Davis is walked to load the bases. Whitaker is called for a BALK in comes Carpenter... SUBSTITUTION: Derek Carter replaces Whitaker on the hill, after the balk I lost my faith in Whitaker's ability to get out of this inning... Taylor flies out ending the inning. Bottom: Velez grounds out to second. Galvez strikes out looking. Lambert singles to right. Alejandro Diaz flies out right-field ending the game. Baltimore 5, Norfolk 4 W: Arturo Ramirez (1-0) L: Dalton Whitaker (0-1, BS1) HR: BAL: Mike Taylor (2), NFK: King Brock (1), Javier Janchez (1), Sergio Galvez (1) POG: Mike Taylor: 3-6, HR, R, RBI The series is now tied at 1 Post-game thoughts: As I mentioned in the preview, we have a weakness in the pen. I lost faith with Whitaker during last years playoffs, and I am at that point again this year. He just seems so inconsistent lately... Takayuki didn't have his best stuff, but he only allowed 2 runs over 6+ innings, giving up 10 hits. He knows how to get out of jams... This offense is questionable, and some changes will be made for Game 3. Looking back over the past 2 games, it seems that we can only score runs with the long-ball, which isn't what this team was built for. Maybe Game 3 we will see some more bunting... This was a heartbreaker, we had the game won, we keept getting our insurance runs, then the bullpen just didn't get the job done, allowing 1 run in the 8th, 9th and 10th... I am questioning myself about going with 3 catchers, I should of added another pitcher. ![]() Delaware Conference - Game 2 The Milford Clippers had their ace Jose Matos on the hill and they were facing off against the weakest of the Braves pitches Todd Eldrige. The Clippers earned runs as well, manufactured runs, taking advantage of the Braves miscues, whenever possible. Scoring one in the 1st on a sac-fly after an errant pick-off throw... back-to-back doubles in the second... a HR in the third... The big blow was an infield single in the 8th, giving the Clippers their 2nd run of the inning and just putting the game out of touch... Its usually good pitching beats good hitting, but the Clippers are out to prove otherwise. W: Jose Matos (1-1) L: Todd Eldridge (0-1) HR: MLF: Jesus Nunuez (1) POG: Jesus Nunez, 1-3, HR, R, 2 RBI Game Note: Julio Romero is now 1-9 in the series for the Braves, last season he was a post-season hero for the Clippers hitting .500-4-11 in 20 AB's over 7 games. Romero has played in 28 post-season games and is a career .312 hitter. The Braves are hoping last years version returns starting in game 3. The series is now tied at 1

2022 Conference Championships - Game 3
MarVa Conference - Game 3
Game 3: Norfolk Cavaliers @ Balitmore Barons Pregame News: I have been toying with who I should start in game 3, Hollis, Brown, Pearson, who? Iemochi had solid success agains the Barons in game 2, so shoudl I go with my other lefty Hollis? Not yet. I think I will save Hollis for game 4. I am going to give the ball to playoff rookie Paul Brown. Brown has been amazing the 2nd half of this season and I have faith he will be able to shut down this Barons lineup... The lineup for the Cav's will be adjusted for game 3... Francisco Gallegos will be playing first-base batting 3rd, John O'Donegan will be shifted from the #3 slot to the #6 slot in the order and Bernardo Velez will be batting 9th playing 2B. Reyes and Hamer will not start this game, and Galvez will move from 1B to LF. Trying to find a spark, we need to score some runs. We face off against Mike Pye who we had good success against this season, so hopefully thats a good sign. ![]() Inning 1: Top: Mike Pye sets us down 1-2-3, the only close call was a Gallegos fly out to deep center. Very routine inning. Bottom: With two outs, Kent Davis dumps one into LF, but is gunned down at 2nd, by Sergio Galvez. Norfolk 0, Baltimore 0 Inning 2: Top: 2 ground outs and strike out, another 1-2-3 inning. Bottom: Taylor walks to lead off the inning, goes to second on a ground out by Collins. Taylor moves up to third on a ground out by King, but is stranded there. Norfolk 0, Baltimore 0 Inning 3: Top: A strike out sandwhiched around two ground outs, and another 1-2-3 inning. Bottom: Carpenter walks with 2 outs, then is gunned down trying to steal second. Norfolk 0, Baltimore 0 Inning 4: Top: With one out, Wally Lambert doubles to right, for the first Cav's hit and baserunner. Gallegos strikes out. Brock reaches first, moving Lambert to third on an error by 1B King. Janchez flies out too center ending the inning. Bottom: Martinez singles to start off the inning. Davis grounds out moving Martinez to second. A wild pitch moves Martinez to third. Mike Taylor hits his 3rd HR of the series another blast, 438ft over the left-field wall, scoring Martinez. The next hitters are retired, but the damage has been done. Norfolk 0, Baltimore 2 Inning 5: Top: O'Donegan walks, but is quickly erased by a Dooley hitting into a DP. Gomez singles to left with two outs. By Velez goes down swinging. Bottom: Odom leads off with a single up the middle. After 2 K's, Carpenter singles to right, moving Odom to third. Martinez flies out too left. Norfolk 0, Baltimore 2 Inning 6: Top: Galvez walks to lead off the inning, Lambert grounds out to second on the hit-and-run, moving Galvez to second. Gallegos and Brock strike out. Bottom: Taylor doubles to right with one out. Brown strikes out the next two. Norfolk 0, Baltimore 2 Pitch Count: NFK: Paul Brown: 106 pitches, 14 stamina BAL: Mike Pye: 90 pitches, 12 stamina Inning 7: Top: Janchez grounds out... SUBSTITUTION: Alejandro Diaz hits for O'Donegan... Diaz pops out, Dooley grounds out. Bottom: Odom singles to right to start off the inning. Duke hits into 4-6-3 DP. Thompson flies out. Norfolk 0, Baltimore 2 Thoughts: We are making Pye look like an all-star, he has good ratings, but we beat him up during the regular season. Maybe if we could get to the bullpen we would have some better luck... Its getting frustrating, becuase I know we are better than a 2 hit per 7 inning team... Inning 8: Top: Gomes goes down swinging... SUBSTITUTION: Pinch-hitting for Bernado Velez is Mauro Candelaria... Candy K's. Galvez pops out. SUBSTITIONS: Yoo-hyun Kim replaces Paul Brown on the hill. Henry Hamer comes into to play left, Galvez shifts to first, Gallegos sits down. Candy stays in to play 2B. Bottom: Kim gives up a lead off single to Carpetner. Martinez then doubles, moving Carpetner to third. Kent Davis singles to right, scoring Martinez and Carpetner. Kim retires the next 3 learing Davis at second. Norfolk 0, Baltimore 4 Inning 9: Top: Lambert K's... SUBSTITUTION: John Heath replaces Mike Pye on the hill for the Barons... Hamer grounds out. Brock strikes out. Game set match. Norfolk 0, Baltimore 4 W: Mike Pye (1-0) L: Paul Brown (0-1) HR: Mike Taylor (3) POG: Mike Pye: 8.1 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 9 K My Thoughts: This was an embarrassing game for the Cavaliers and they better be ready to come out and win tomorrow. 2 hits? 4 base-runners? This offense is just awful right now, against an pitching staff that shouldn't mow us down like this. It seems for the third year in a row the Barons are stepping it up and the Cav's are crapping the bed... Janchez .100, O'Donegan .143, Dooley .091... all 3 of these guys should be hitting the ball better, O'D and JJ came into the playoffs "hot"!... Frustration is mounting here in Norfolk, that is for sure... Mike Hollis better have his A-game tomorrow. ![]() Delaware Conference - Game 3 Many experts will be talking about this game for a long time and the Braves Manager Mal Gentry will be questioned with his decisions of going with starter Andres Gonzalez instead of closer Arturo Herrera (42 for 46 in saves this year). For whatever reason, the call came in and they Braves bullpen just couldn't get the job done giving up 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th. Gonzalez gave up 2 hits and one 1, Will Wilson gave up a hit and a run, and Dennis Marshall gave up a hit and a run... all while closer Herrera sat in the pen anxiously... was it the situation? The 8th inning? Gentry just not ready to bring in their one inning closer? Whatever the reason it back-fired. As the Clippers scored 3 runs with 2 outs in the 8th to take the 2-1 game lead. W: Hector Santos (1-0) L: Will Wilson (0-1) S: Willard Green (1) HR: LEW: Leonard Davis (1), MLF: Pat Shelton (1) POG: Jorge Moran (Lewes Braves): 6.0 IP, 3 H, R, 4 BB, 6 K Gonzalez was charged with a blown save, allowing 2 hits, a run, and an inherited runner to score in 1/3 of an inning. Side Note: Arturo Herrera is nationally and locally "disliked" I have never seen that before, found it pretty funny.
