Jacksonville Jays (51-28 .646 3.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) at
Memphis Mules (35-45 .438 16.5 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division)

JAX: Jim Baucom (23-L) (15-1 1.53 ERA 135.2 IP, 87 H, 3 HR, 18 BB, 126 SO) All-Star(2: 02-03)
MEM: Darrell Carraway (36-R) (3-5 3.02 ERA 80.1 IP, 72 H, 4 HR, 32 BB, 46 SO)

Baucom gave up 3 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk with 7 strikeouts in 8 innings last time out in his 1st loss of the season. How will he react? We will bounce back with his best game of the season or collapse and lose a bunch in a row?

We beat Carraway in May, but only scored 1 run on 6 hits and 3 walks with 3 strikeouts in 6 innings. Baucom pitched a 3 hit shutout with 11 SO that game.

Top of the First
Charlie Faber, the greatest leadoff man ever, lines a double to left center! Fernando Tello grounds out to 2nd and Faber goes to 3rd. Cal Doty swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Faber holds... Ray McDonald grounds out to 2nd....

Bottom of the First
Tony Weninger swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short. Bill Weydert swings at the first pitch and fouls out to 1st. Keith Meyer swings at the first pitch and beats out an infield hit... Nestor Gonzalez swings at the first pitch and pops out to short!

Top of the Third
With 1 out, Charlie Faber draws a walk. Fernando Tello grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Faber is hurt breaking up the double play.... Leander Gooding (33-R) will go in to play 2nd.

Through 5 innings, the leadoff double by Charlie Faber is the only hit we have...

Top of the Seventh
Jack Washburn doubles to left! They walk Bart Daw intentionally. Jim Hess grounds into a 5-4-3 double play and Washburn goes to 3rd..... P Jim Baucom grounds a hit to right and Washburn scores! 1 to 0, Jays!

Top of the Eighth

New Pitcher: John Robillard (28-R), their closer, who is 4-8 with 7 SV and a 5.91 ERA in 53.1 IP. Fernando Tello takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and goes to 2nd on a ground out. They walk Ray McDonald intentionally. Tom McDowell bloops a hit to right and the bases are loaded with 1 out. Jack Washburn walks on 4 pitches to force in a run! 2 to 0, Jays! Bart Daw flies out to deep left and McDonald trots home. 3 to 0, Jays! Jim Hess grounds a hit to left and McDowell scores! 4 to 0, Jays!

Top of the Ninth
Leander Gooding doubles to right center! Fernando Tello walks on 4 pitches.... I think I might be looking for a new closer, if I was in charge of the Mules.... Cal Doty lines a hit to center and the bases are loaded with no outs! They cannot walk Ray McDonald intentionally this time and he whacks the first pitch on a line to left center for a double and 2 runs score!! 6 to 0, Jays! That does it for P Robillard, whose season ERA is now 7.00. New Pitcher: Jackie Wade (28-R), who is 0-2 with 1 SV and a 2.12 ERA in 17 IP. Tom McDowell grounds out to 2nd and Doty scores and McDonald goes to 3rd. 7 to 0, Jays! Jack Washburn draws a walk. Bart Daw swings at the first pitch and grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and McDonald scores. 8 to 0, Jays!

Won - 8 to 0

It is the first time ever the Jays have had 3 straight Complete Games from their starters!

We had 9 hits and made 1 error
Memphis had 3 hits and made 1 error

Jim Baucom (W 16-1) pitched 9 shutout inning (CG), allowed 3 hits, no walks and struck out 8. 106 pitches. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. I'd say he bounced back! It is his MLB leading 6th shutout of the season and the 15th of his career, tying him with Tom Peterson of Syracuse for the all-time lead! Peterson has made 114 starts and Baucom, only 88.

Darrell Carraway (L 3-6) went 7 innings, gave us 1 run, 4 hits, 4 walks (1 INT) and struck out 4. He threw a WP. Twice he has faced the Jays this season and twice he has lost to a Jim Baucom shutout!

2B Charlie Faber went 1 for 1 with a double and a walk. 2B Leander Gooding his a double and scored a run. RF Fernando Tello drew 2 walks and scored 2 runs. CF Cal Doty had 2 hits and scored a run. LF Ray McDonald hit a double, drew a walk (INT), scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI. 3B Tom McDowell had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. 1B Jack Washburn hit a double and drew 3 walks, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Bart Daw drew 2 walks (1 INT) and had 2 RBI.

Trudy's report on Charlie Faber is wrist tendinitis that she expects to bother him for two weeks or so... We will put him on the DL.

Independence Day!

We put 2B Charlie Faber (33-R) on the DL and recalled Junior Danielson (33-R) from Daytona (A), where he was hitting a rousing .207.

Jacksonville Jays (52-28 .650 3.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) at
Memphis Mules (35-46 .432 17.5 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division)

JAX: Al Calice (23-R) (4-4 3.36 ERA 91 IP, 79 H, 7 HR, 34 BB, 44 SO) Rookie
MEM: Charlie Foltz (30-R) (3-7 3.69 ERA 107.1 IP, 104 H, 10 HR, 37 BB, 71 SO) All-Star(01)

Calice gave up 4 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks with 4 strikeouts in 6 innings last time out in a no decision that we won. I think it is funny that we have two rookies in our rotation who are both top 10 prospects, but are both older than Jim Baucom, who is tied for the all-time record in career shutouts!

We faced Foltz in April and scored 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits and no walks with 4 strikeouts in 3.1 innings in a no decision that he had to leave with an injury. We ended up losing the game.

We are in Charlotte to play the Hornets a short 2 game set. They were swept in 3 games here by Richmond over the weekend. We are 4-3 against them on the season and won a pair of games the first time we visited, June 15-16. They are 2nd in scoring with 4.65 runs per game (Jacksonville is up to #6 with 4.30!). The Hornets are 13th in fewest runs allowed with 4.37 per game (Jacksonville is still #1 with 3.25). They have allowed the 2nd most HR in the MLB with 78, though they are a long way from allowing the most. Birmingham's minor league rotation has allowed 90! We have allowed 57, the 9th most. Their run differential is +23 and ours is +85, again tied for 2nd behind Buffalo (+102), but this time with Orlando.

Jacksonville Jays (53-28 .654 4 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) at
Charlotte Hornets (38-43 .469 15 GB in 5th place in the Southern Division)

CHAR: Angel Gomez (24-R) (8-3 2.72 ERA 109 IP, 98 H, 10 HR, 25 BB, 46 SO)

LF Ray McDonald had 2 hits with a double, stole a base and had an RBI. 1B Jack Washburn had 2 hits with his 10th home run of the season, drew a walk, walk hit by a pitch, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBI. C Bert Swope had 3 hits with his 1st home run, drew a walk and had 2 RBI. PH Danny Stewart had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI.

Trudy's report on Cal Doty is a sore hamstring that she thinks will bother him for 4 or 5 days. The blister is also still bothering him and should for another week....

Top of the First
Leander Gooding grounds a hit to left! Fernando Tello walks on 4 pitches! Ray McDonald grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4, and Gooding goes to 3rd. Tom McDowell fouls out to the catcher.... Jack Washburn beats out an infield hit and Gooding scores! 1 to 0, Jays! Gary McKellar grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the First
Wilson Partida grounds out to 3rd. Tom Van Diest pokes a hit to left... Ed Yeager grounds one to 1st, but Jack Washburn makes a bad throw to 2nd for an error.... Clark Land grounds into a 6-4-3 double play!!

Through 5 innings, the 2 hits we had in the first inning are all we have off this bum....

Bottom of the Fifth
Joe Tomlinson doubles to right, the second hit of the game for the Otters. Dave Behm draws a walk... Dennis Perrin grounds into a 6-4-3 double play!!

Top of the Sixth
Fernando Tello lines a 3-2 pitch to center for our third hit of the game. Ray McDonald doubles to center! Tom McDowell doubles to right and both runners score!! 3 to 0, Jays! They walk Jack Washburn intentionally. Gary McKellar grounds into a 6-4-3 double play...

Won - 6 to 1

Sweep!
Our 7th Complete Game in the last 10 games!

Jim Larson (L 1-5) went 7.1 innings, gave us 6 runs, 8 hits, 1 home run, 4 walks (2 INT) and struck out 1.

RF Fernando Tello had 2 hits with a double and a walk and scored 2 runs. LF/RF Ray McDonald hit a double, drew a walk (INT) and scored 2 runs. 3B Tom McDowell hit a double and had 2 RBI. 1B Jack Washburn had 2 hits with his 11th home run of the season, drew a walk (INT) and had 4 RBI.

Trudy told me after the game that Charlie Faber's wrist was not healing as expected and she could not give me a new ETA on his return....

But to good news! The All-Star rosters were announced today and the Jays will be sending 5 players! For the first time a Jay was elected to start the game! And not just one, but 3 (!!!): P Jim Baucom, LF Ray McDonald and CF Cal Doty, though Doty is not going to go and will take the time to recuperate. The other two representatives are rookie pitchers Mike Marsh and Albert Davies! I was hoping 3B Tom McDowell would also make it, but there are just too many good 3rd basemen in the Southern Division. He would have probably made it in the North.

RP Larry Domino, Ottawa (35-L 1-4 2.28 18 SV F) (2-time AS/1st start)

RP Steve Dockery, Louisville (27-R 0-1 0.78 10 SV D) (4-time AS/1st start)

Gabriel Beltran was the top vote getter.

The Southern Division won, 2 to 1.
They now lead the series, 4 to 0.

In the top of the 7th, Dick Pavlov drew a 1 out walk and Leo Toruno (30-L) of Memphis tripled him home. In the bottom of the 7th, the North tied the game with a home run by Mike Hughes (29-R) of Ottawa. In the top of the 9th, Ron Lerche (25-R) hit a 2-out double and P Jack Barber (30-R) of Richmond, forced to bat, singled in the go ahead run. He pitched the final two innings to get the win, but was not voted the MVP, for some reason. Mike Hughes was. He went 2 for 2 with a home run for the losers.

Buffalo led all teams with 6 players in the game. Columbus, Jacksonville, Syracuse, Orlando and Richmond each sent 5 players. Every team sent at least 2 players this year.

For the Jays, Ray McDonald went 0 for 2. Albert Davies and Mike Marsh each pitched a perfect inning and struck out a batter. I was hoping Jim Baucom's high pitch count in his last outing would keep him out of the game and it did! So he will be able to start our next game!

The American Association (A) also had their All-Star Game today. RP Dave Nini (26-L) and rookie LF Tommy Adams (21-L) were the only players from Daytona (A) to make the team. Nini pitched a perfect inning and struck out a batter. Adams went 0 for 2 with a walk as a substitute. The Hamilton Clippers led all teams with 6 players. The South Division won, 5 to 1, in 10 innings. 2B Duane Harland (22-R) of Montgomery went 3 for 4 with a SF and an error to win MVP honors. 3B Dave Moreno (25-R) of Norfolk and Joe Bowden (28-R) of Hamilton each hit a home run.

We are home to finish our season series with the Buffalo Bombers with 4 games through the weekend. They swept Charlotte in 4 games last weekend, outscoring them 36 to 14. Most people think of the Bombers as a team that just pummels their opponents with their home run bats, but they had 3 starting pitchers make the All-Star team. We somehow managed to win 3 of the 4 games we played in Buffalo, April 8-11, shutting them out 3 times. They are 2nd in scoring with 4.82 runs per game (Jacksonville is up to #5 with 4.26). They lead the MLB with 89 HR. We are tied for 10th with 58. The Bombers are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.39 per game, even though they play in the best hitters park in the MLB (Jacksonville is #1 with 3.18). Their run differential is +126, the best in the League, and ours is +94, 3rd best, behind Orlando (+112).

Buffalo Bombers (56-32 .636 2 GA in 1st place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (58-29 .667 5.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division)

BUF: Danny Belsky (31-R) (9-5 2.17 ERA 120.1 IP, 99 H, 13 HR, 37 BB, 79 SO) All-Star
JAX: Jim Baucom (23-L) (17-1 1.41 ERA 153.2 IP, 99 H, 3 HR, 19 BB, 144 SO) All-Star(3: 02-04)

We beat Belsky in April, but only scored 2 runs on 6 hits, 1 home run and 5 walks with 3 strikeouts in 6 innings.

Baucom had a CG win last timeout, but allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 9 hits and 1 walk with 10 strikeouts.

7: SS Bart Daw (32-R .224-237-3-27-.617-15 B+)
8: C Jim Hess (34-R .220-59-2-8-.576-0 B)
9: P Del Warwick (29-L .189-37-0-1-.432-0 D+) Gold Glove(02)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Connie Mack Stadium
Weather: 79 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 7 MPH wind blowing in from left
Attendance: 11,678

Top of the First
Pete Hudzik flies out to deep center. Dan Faust grounds out to short. Frank Cohen strikes out! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First
Leander Gooding flies out to left. Gary McKellar strikes out... Ray McDonald grounds out to 3rd...

Bottom of the Second
Tom McDowell takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and goes to 2nd on a wild pitch! Jack Washburn draws a walk. Fernando Tello grounds a hit up the middle and McDowell scores! 1 to 0, Jays! With 1 out, Jim Hess grounds a double play ball to short, but Joel McCormick boots it and the bases are loaded with 1 out! P Del Warwick strikes out... Leander Gooding draws a walk to force in a run! 2 to 0, Jays!

Bottom of the Third
Ray McDonald and Tom McDowell lead off with back to back walks. That is 5 already by P Jerry Doherty! After Jack Washburn and Fernando Tello both strike out, Bart Daw beats out an infield hit to load the bases up with 2 outs. Jim Hess lines out to short...

Bottom of the Eighth
With 2 outs, Bart Daw draws a walk, the 8th issued by P Jerry Doherty today. That does it for him. New Pitcher: Terry Lies (25-R), a 2002 All-Star, who is 2-0 with 4 SV and a 2.31 ERA in 35 IP. PH Cal Doty (27-L) grounds a double over the 3rd base bag, but Daw stops at 3rd for some reason with the pitcher coming to bat... You ought to take a shot there with 2 outs, even if you think it is less than 50-50 that you will make it. But he made the right decision, because P Del Warwick grounds a hit up the middle and both runners score!! 4 to 0, Jays!

Won - 4 to 0

We had 5 whole hits and made 1 error
Buffalo had 3 hits (all singles) and made 1 error

Del Warwick (W 7-6) pitched 9 scoreless innings (CG), allowed 3 hits, no walks and struck out 3. 77 pitches! Surpasses the previous team record for a Complete Game of 86 by Jim Baucom in 2002, his rookie season! At bat, he had a hit and 2 RBI. Back to back 3 hit shutouts for him and 3 straight CG wins without allowing an earned run!

Jerry Doherty (L 9-6) went 7.2 innings, gave us 3 runs (2 earned), 3 hits, 8 walks and struck out 10. He threw a WP. 130 pitches.

Leander Gooding drew 2 walks, one with the bases loaded. 3B Tom McDowell drew 2 walks and scored a run. 1B Jack Washburn hit a double and drew a walk and scored a run. SS Bart Daw had a hit and a walk and scored a run. PH Cal Doty hit a double and scored a run.

Buffalo Bombers (56-35 .615 1 GA in 1st place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (61-29 .678 6.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division)

BUF: Doug Jones (27-R) (5-3 5.43 ERA 61.1 IP, 72 H, 6 HR, 26 BB, 40 SO)
JAX: Dale Gilchrist (25-R) (6-8 3.43 ERA 118 IP, 110 H, 11 HR, 39 BB, 68 SO)

Jones was 1-1 in 2 starts and 13.2 innings last year with a 3.29 ERA. We have never faced him before. We beat 3 straight All-Stars, so we will lose to the bum today.... Although, Jones is not a bum. He has pitched well everywhere before this season. His last start was a 5 hit shutout with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.

Gilchrist pitched a CG win last time out, allowing 1 run on 6 hits, 1 home run and 2 walks with 5 strikeouts. His 2nd CG win in a row.

Cal Doty reports that his finger blister has healed up!

We are in Hartford to finish our season series with the Whalers with 4 games. They split 4 games here with Birmingham over the weekend. We won 3 of 4 games against them in Jacksonville, May 6-9, though all 3 of our wins were by 1 run and none of our starting pitchers had a decision in the series. They are 12th in scoring with 3.92 runs per game (Jacksonville is #5 with 4.27). The Whalers are last in fewest runs allowed with 5.19 per game (Jacksonville is #1 3.16). Their run differential is -114, the worst in the MLB, and ours is +101, still 3rd best.

Jacksonville Jays (61-30 .670 6.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) at
Hartford Whalers (31-59 .344 25 GB in 8th (last) place in the Northern Division)

JAX: Al Calice (23-R) (4-4 3.78 ERA 100 IP, 92 H, 10 HR, 38 BB, 50 SO) Rookie
HART: Alex Barrera (23-L) (1-6 6.23 ERA 56.1 IP, 84 H, 2 HR, 29 BB, 23 SO) Rookie

Calice gave up 4 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks with 2 strikeouts in 5 innings last time out in a no decision that we won. He has had 4 straight no decisions and we have won every one.

We faced Barrera in May, scoring 5 runs on 9 hits and 2 walks with 1 strikeout in 3.2 innings in a no decision that we lost.

Jacksonville Jays (62-30 .674 7.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) at
Hartford Whalers (31-60 .341 26 GB in 8th (last) place in the Northern Division)

JAX: Jim Baucom (23-L) (18-1 1.45 ERA 161.2 IP, 105 H, 4 HR, 20 BB, 153 SO) All-Star(3: 02-04)
HART: Bill Wilson (35-R) (5-8 4.17 ERA 108 IP, 114 H, 11 HR, 40 BB, 74 SO)

Baucom gave up 2 runs on 6 hits, 1 home run and 1 walk with 9 strikeouts in 8 innings last time out in a win. He threw 136 pitches and should be given an extra day of rest, but no one else is fresher than he is, so he will go, but we will try to limit his pitches.

Wilson is their #1 starter. He was 8-7 with a 3.73 ERA in 166.2 IP last year. He is 2-3 in 6 starts against the Jays in his career with a 2.57 ERA. 42 IP, 36 H, 2 HR, 16 BB, 30 SO.
