1972-73 Offseason News and Notes

A surprise pick at the top of the year for me atleast. John Montefusco is the top pick, and he does pass the eye test. I love Pedro Guerrero's bat, and Dave Winfield's power. The Brewers go with pitching though, and if Montefusco lives up to his initial ratings, then it's a excellent pick.

No Hall of Fame inductees for the third straight year!! Those doors are getting very difficult to open!

Johnny Bench and Dick Allen are both shadows of their real selves, but Bench is getting better every year, and this year was an excellent breakout year!

the Mets get Joe Sambito and Ken Clay...i know of Sambito...very capable pitcher, but winning the world series means you pick late in the draft, and what a draft this was....Winfield, Knepper, Yount, Clark, Guerrero, Murray, Lynn,...this was a very deep hitters draft...

1973 MLB Regular Season

The season begins with the news that it will be Hank Aaron’s final campaign. He hasn’t started since 1970, and spent the last 3 years as a backup for the Dodgers. His 455 career home runs will punch him a ticket in the Hall of Fame. Aaron won the 1961 NL MVP with a career high 52 home runs, 139 RBI’s and a .337 average.

Reggie Jackson is becoming injury prone. After playing in just 100 games last year, Jackson strained his medial collateral ligament a week into the season, and missed 5 weeks. He came back and had a very nice June. On July 1st, he fractured is ankle ending his season. Combining his last 2 injury plagued seasons, Jackson played in 139 games, 503 at bats, 47 homers, 117 RBI’s, .323 average. Baseball is being deprived of a superstar…

Jackson

A month before the all-star game, all four divisions were very tight. 3 weeks later, at the all-star break, that has changed dramatically. The Mets have pulled away in the NL east, leading St. Louis by 9 games now. The Astros are comfy with a 4 game lead on the Reds, Baltimore and Chicago are poised for a ALCS rematch with nice leads in their divisions.

Huge blow to the Minnesota Twins. Cito Gaston has suffered a terrible concussion. It was so bad, he was forced to retire. At 29, I unretired him, and he’ll be out 500 days, but he’s easily the Twins best hitter, and has been for half a decade. The Twins haven’t been to the playoffs for a while, but they have been solid. This will send them into a downward spiral. Might be time to trade Sandy Koufax

A big addition for the Chicago White Sox
4 young players go to the seemingly always rebuilding A’s, for a potential star catcher, Carlton Fisk. Fisk is in the midst of a true breakout season. It makes the White Sox and even stronger title contender. Very nice move.

The Cubs makes a nice trade deadline pickup in former Phillie Pete Rose

Surprising to see Rose go for a middle age stewardess, but maybe the Phillies have some smuggling needs. Rose is having a good year. He makes the Cubbies a better team, but they are currently 5th place in the best division in baseball. So this move is with an eye to do something next season, i'm sure.

As I’ve mentioned a few times, there’s a reason the A’s have never won a World Series. They make dumb decisions. This is one of them.

Dave Winfield was a great draft pick. Less than a year later, they trade him. WHY???? This deal is dumb. Between this and the Fisk deal, they are getting a lot of youth back, but this team needs talent, good talent, and that’s what Dave Winfield and Carlton Fisk gave them. 21 year old Dave Winfield to play for his home town team now, which is pretty cool. He’ll be a franchise player.

The only pennant race worth watching is the NL west. The Reds lead the Astros by 3, and the Dodgers by 5. Nothing else is close enough to mention. If the Reds hold on, it will be a complete repeat of last years division winners.

Nothing changes during September. All the leaders hold their spots, and we’ll have some playoff rematches.

We have a rematch of the 1971 World Series, won by the Reds. Chicago is clearly the better hitting team, while the Reds are a better pitching team. A classic matchup. The Reds are becoming the Yankees of this world, and will probably win, because thats what they do.

Bert Blyleven and Bill Singer are becoming World Series rivals. They faced each other 3 times two seasons ago, and meet again in game one of the 73 series. Both pitchers go the distance, but Blyleven is the victor allowing 1 run on 6 hits. 3-1 Chicago

Darrell Porter does everything he can to tie the series. 3 hits, 3 runs, 2 home runs, 4 RBI’s, but it isn’t enough. The Sox score 6 early runs on Reds starter Mike Torrez, highlighted by Toby Harrah’s home run, and the White Sox edge the Reds 7-6.

Charlie Hudson, an NL Rube Waddell candidate does not allow a hit until the seventh inning. By that time, the Reds lead is 5. Darrell Porter hits his third home run of the series. Reds roll 6-0.

Bill Singer starts on 3 days rest, while the Blyleven waits until game 5. Chicago gets to Singer early, with a 3 run third inning. Walks and errors do in the Reds and they trail 4-1 early. Darrell Porter gets 3 more hits, and knocks in a run, but again he is the only Red really playing well, and his effort falls just short. White Sox win game four, 5-4.

Bert Blyleven is on the mound for what Sox fans hope is their Series clinching win. A low scoring affair is decided with a 6th inning home run by the Reds Johnny Callison. Beating Blyleven is huge, and we have to assume if the Reds can get this thing to seven games, Blyleven won’t pitch the final game. 2-1 Reds win.

Andy Kosco knocks in the Reds first run, and grabs a very early 1-0 lead. Chicago responds right away. Rich Severson hits a bases loaded double, which scores 2, but sees Carlos Lopez thrown out at home. 2-1 White Sox after 2 innings. 21 game winner Bart Johnson allows Cincinnati just 1 hit for the rest of the game. Unfortunately for the Reds, that hit is not a home run. Chicago wins 2-1 and they are the World Champions!!

1973-Offseason News and Notes

Dale Murphy goes first overall to the Detroit Tigers, who got really old and really bad really fast. They need everything. I love the Giants getting Dennis Martinez at nine.

I totally missed it, but in 1973, the American League adapted the DH rule. AL pitchers will no longer bat unless an NL team is hosting a World Series game.

Lou Gehrig's 1929 season has the highest WAR ever recorded, and it is the best season we ever witnessed. He hit 425 that year with 65 home runs, 207 RBIs, and a OBP of .497. Still astonishing after 40 years. Nap Lajoie’s 1901 season where he hit 440 is second on the list, followed by Rogers Hornsby 1925 season. He hit .387 with 33 home runs that year.

Another year without a Hall of Fame Inductee. That will be changing soon. There will be some players getting in soon. One I can think of is Willie Mays.

Nice round one pick by the Yanks. They are going to have a deadly rotation.

The MVP comparisons have not been really close so far. Interesting.

Murphy/Clark Detroit future outfield

Like the potential in the Dale Murphy/Jack Clark outfield the Tigers have in the future.

33 year old Sadaharu Oh has won 6 AL MVP's, been named to 11 all-star teams, and won the 1961 Rookie of the Year.

Unfortunately for him, he's been a life long member of the Angels, who have never played in the postseason. The only expansion team that's ever qualified for the playoffs are the Mets, who did it these past two years.

I like that it really really hard for expansion teams to win, but the Angels started out competitive. They were easily the best of the new teams in the 60's, but have nothing to show for it.
