Lopat No-Hits Reds
Thursday, August 28th, 1952

Excitement reigned at the ballyard today as Boston hurler Ed Lopat tossed a baseball rarity -- a no-hitter.

After defeating the Cincinnati Reds at Crosley Field 4-0 he was swamped by reporters in the clubhouse for postgame comments. "I'm just glad to be here. I want to help the club any way I can. Today I just went right at the Cincinnati as hard as I could, as long as I could."

Lopat chalked up 3 strikeouts and allowed 1 walk in his superb performance.

The Boston manager had his own analysis of the ballgame: "I don't think we could have hit him with a howitzer today."

This year Lopat has compiled a 8-10 record with a 3.34 ERA in 22 starts.

Cubs Star Earns NL Bat Title
Monday, September 29th, 1952

The league batting title is awarded each year to the one player that is able to separate himself, even if only by a single hit, from the rest of the hitters in the league. This year, the player to do that was Chicago's third baseman Gil McDougald. He hit National League pitching at a .328 pace over 148 games to take home the 1952 edition of the award.

1952 North American Series

Phillies KO Athletics
Sunday, October 5th, 1952
"This is why we play the game," commented Philadelphia's manager after his club captured their 4th North American Series crown by whipping the Philadelphia Athletics 5-3 today at Shibe Park.

"Baseball don't get any better than this."

The Phillies were victorious 4-1 in the series after completing the regular season 90-64 and finishing in first place in the National League.

The losing manager had his say, too, telling reporters, "Despite the loss, this year has been a pretty good story, a doggone good story. I'm proud of my guys. We had great veteran leadership and we had players that never gave up -- no quit in us at all. And it got us here. And I'm proud of that. I think you might see the Athletics back here soon."

Friday, October 17th, 1952

AL Announces Best Glovemen for 1952

Pitcher: Carl Erskine (Boston Red Sox)
Catcher: Smoky Burgess (Detroit Tigers)
First Baseman: Luke Easter (St. Louis Browns)
Second Baseman: Red Schoendienst (St. Louis Browns)
Third Baseman: Boyd Bartley (Detroit Tigers)
Shortstop: Phil Rizzuto (St. Louis Browns)

1952 was an impressive year for Philadelphia third baseman Billy Martin and it was capped off today with the announcement that he has been named the winner of the National League Newcomer of the Year Award.

AL Newcomer of the Year Award Presented
Saturday, October 18th, 1952

It was a productive season for Cleveland reliever Tom Morgan. He put up some impressive figures with no saves in no save opportunities -- figures so impressive that the American League honored him with the Newcomer of the Year Award for 1952.

The bullpen ace notched 21 wins and 9 losses while compiling a 2.73 ERA. In 280.1 innings, Tom Morgan yielded 236 base hits, struck out 0 and walked 91. Opposition batters hit .233 against him.

NL Gives Outstanding Pitcher Award
Monday, October 20th, 1952

What does it take to win the Walter Johnson Award?

Just ask Mike Garcia of the Cincinnati Reds -- the latest National League Walter Johnson Award winner.

"My dad always told me to dream big and dream always," he said. "It's not like I shoot for the Walter Johnson Award," he said. "I have big aspirations for what I want to do in this game and what I want to achieve in a long career."

The Reds pitching ace made some of his dreams come true this year, winning 23 games and losing only 13. In 38 starts, Garcia registered a 2.97 ERA and limited other clubs to a .230 batting average. He fanned 154 in 312 innings and issued 104 walks.

St. Louis's Presko, Walter Johnson Award Winner
Monday, October 20th, 1952

The Walter Johnson Award for 1952 has been presented and the American League winner is Joe Presko of St. Louis.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Presko. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Browns star told reporters.

Presko excelled with an impressive 23-9 record in 41 starts. In 320 innings he yielded 267 hits and 101 walks, while striking out 141 and compiling a fine 2.81 ERA.

McDougald Selected NL's Best Batter
Tuesday, October 21st, 1952

Gil McDougald, the Chicago third baseman, certainly made an impression on National League pitchers this past season. He punished them for 197 hits in 600 at-bats, 29 doubles, 10 triples, 16 home runs, and 90 RBIs and scored 81 times.

That standout hitting earned him the National League Ty Cobb Award for 1952.

AL's Top Hitter for 1952 Named
Tuesday, October 21st, 1952

What a way to finish off the year -- being honored with the 1952 Ty Cobb Award in the American League. It had already been a very special season for Cleveland's Stan Musial, but today's announcement really put the icing on his cake.

All season long Stan Musial gave opposing pitchers fits by hitting .336 as he collected 202 hits, 34 doubles, 2 triples, 34 home runs and 99 RBIs.

The St. Louis Browns Win Again, Making it 10 Straight!
Sunday, July 26th, 1953
The Browns have simply been on fire lately racking up 10 wins in a row. Few fans across North American BaseBall League will have their team come close to winning so many games in a row this year and St. Louis Manager, Jimmie Wilson, urged fans not to take it for granted. "These guys are playing their butts off," said Wilson. "I don't know how long it will last but I hope our fans are enjoying it. We sure are!"

Sain Super -- No-Hits Washington
Sunday, August 9th, 1953
Johnny Sain was unhittable today as he beat the Senators 1-0. The St. Louis pitcher breezed through the Washington lineup and got himself a no-hitter. Sain had them talking to themselves as he struck out 4 and issued 2 walks in an outstanding performance at Griffith Stadium I.

His catcher said to reporters after the game, "He started off slow. He didn't have command of anything in the first three innings, but lucked his way through them. The Senators really helped him out by not being patient... they hit a lot of first pitches. Then it all came together in the fourth. From there on, the Senators never had a chance. He dominated them."

Season-to-date Sain has rung up 9 wins and 5 losses in 27 appearances. He has an ERA of 3.74 and has fanned 59 batters in 151.2 innings.

NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed
Saturday, September 12th, 1953
With the 1953 rookie draft only 30 days away, teams across North American BaseBall League are preparing their scouting missions, trying to assess their long-term needs and hoping that they land the prospect that will positively define their club for the next few years. Most of the young men in the draft pool will have gone as far as they can go, but then, a few will surprise and pan out as quality -- or even great -- professional ballplayers.

For a complete listing of those entered in the draft, consult the newly created draft section on the Transactions page, which will be available for 30 days prior to draft day.

The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be:
1. Vic Power, 25 year-old first baseman out of college.
2. Hank Aaron, 19 year-old left fielder out of high-school.
3. Walt Moryn, 27 year-old right fielder out of college.
4. Karl Spooner, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
5. Harmon Killebrew, 17 year-old third baseman out of high-school.
6. Lou Berberet, 23 year-old catcher out of college.
7. Bill Skowron, 22 year-old first baseman out of college.
