1930 FINAL STANDINGS

As we complete the third decade of the 20th century, the Chicago Colts find themselves in a much better place than could have been predicted 10 years ago. They made it back to the World Series after a one-year absence, helped along by a surprise 20 win season from starter William Bell and the ever-excellent Chop Tempkin. Unfortunately, the Colts will be without Bell's services due to a pulled rotator cuff incurred in mid-September. In New York, Arnold Colfax bounced back to win another HR title with a couple surprise competitors in Rap Dixon and Chino Smith who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Also making his mark in the Big Apple was James Concannon, who decidedly came into his own, batting .407 with 32 taters. Offense was up all over baseball, causing critics to complain that the baseballs are doctored. Whatever the cause, the fans like it.

Speaking of offense, it was sky high in the Federal League as well, most noticeably in the performance of Louisville's Chuck Klein who set a new mark with an astonishing .441 to go with his 46 homeruns and 158 RBI. The only reason he didn't win the triple crown was 22 year-old Jimmie Foxx who broke the Federal League records with 56 bombs and 170 RBI. Louisville was obviously improved as they 3 spots in the standing by winning 16 more games. When all their talent matures, they should be quite the team. For now, though, the spotlight remains in Washington D.C., where the Monumentals proved that last year's championship was no fluke. Cristobal Torriente, Bill Dickey, Wiilie Underhill, and Jud Wilson all equaled or surpassed their performances of 1929, determined to make their mark and set their sights on a dynasty. Only the Colts stand in their way.

SAL "STUMPY" NARCINO, C, PITTSBURGH PIRATES, 38 Years Old - Stumpy gets his name added to the list of stars who didn't know when to hang up his cleats. The Pirates unfortunately released him after a week. The Maroons took a chance with him, but he obviously was playing with reduced skills

JOSEPH "CHOP" TEMPKIN, SP, CHICAGO COLTS, 35 Years Old - 1930 started off badly when Chop got knocked out for a month with a torn tricep. He came in late May with a tendency to hang his curveball, but by the end of the season he was the same old crafty ace leading his team to the Series.

1930 WORLD SERIES

9/27/1930 - GAME 1 COLTS 8 - MONUMENTALS 9, 11 innings

After giving up a 5-2 lead and falling behing by 3 runs, it appeared that the Monumentals had lost the first game to the crafty Colts. Perseverance prevailed though and Washington battled back behind the 4 for 5, 4 RBI performance of Lew Fonseca, sending the game to extras. Finally, in the bottom of the 11th, Alejandro Oms knocked home the winning run with a bloop single of the head of Del Bissonette.

9/28/1930- GAME 2 COLTS 3 - MONUMENTALS 8

In game 2, the Monumentals' bats proved too much for "Chop" Tempkin, who allowed all 8 of Washington's runs in 7 innings. Cristobal Torriente led the boys from D.C. with a 3 for 4, 1 HR, 4 RBI performance. His 3 run shot in the 7th was the cherry on the sundae.

9/30/1930 - GAME 3 MONUMENTALS 2 - COLTS 1

Chicago outhit Washington 12-3, but they still fell to Washington 2-1, placing them in a 3 game hole on the brink of elimination. Lew Fonseca knocked in the game-winning run with a solo shot in the 5th. Will the Colts be a victim of the sweep?

10/1/1930 - GAME 4 MONUMENTALS 5 - COLTS 13

The Colts again outhit the Monumentals, but this time all engines were running as they got out to a 13-2 lead. 5 RBI from Billy Cissell led the squad. Washington rallied in the top of the 9th for 3 runs, but the lead was insurmountable and Chicago finally got one in the win column. They are still on the edge of elimination, though.

10/2/1930 - GAME 5 MONUMENTALS 5 - COLTS 6

Joseph Tempkin was again underwhelming as he allowed 5 runs in 7+ innings, but thankfully, this time Willie Underhill was mediocre as well, sending the game to the relievers to be decided. Eventually it was Chicago's rarely used reliever, Skipper Friday, who managed to hold off Washington long enough for Crush Holloway to send home the gamewinner with an RBI double.

10/4/1930- GAME 6 COLTS 3 - MONUMENTALS 6

Jud Wilson launched a 2 run shot in the bottom of the 1st, but the Colts rallied back with 3 over the next 5 innings and it appeared that the momentum had shifted in their favor. Wilson would have none of that, though, as he started off the 6th with another 2 run bomb, sparking a 4 run rally to put the Monumentals up for good and win them their 2nd straight crown.

• January 22 - Dr. Heinrich Brüning of the Centre Party is appointed German Reichskanzler
• February 18 - While studying photographs taken in January, Clyde Tombaugh discovers Pluto
• February 18 - Elm Farm Ollie becomes the first cow to fly in an airplane and also the first cow to be milked in an airplane. This was done for scientists to observe midair effects on animals, among other reasons. Not satisfied with these feats, the people who milked her put the milk into paper cartons and parachuted them to fans waiting below.

• Spring - The Great Depression: Unemployment reaches 25% in Germany. Much of the blame is placed incorrectly on the ruling Centre Party, with negative public sentiment contributing to a massive rise in the popularity of the radical German Worker's Party.
• April 6 - Hostess Twinkies are invented.
• April 21 - Fire in Ohio State Penitentiary near Columbus kills 320
• April 28 - The first night game in organized baseball history takes place in Independence, Kansas.
• Spring - Chicago and New York police detectives establish a connection between the weapons used in the St. Valentine's Day Massacre and the murder of mobster Frankie Yale, implicating Capone's involvement in Yale's death.
• May - The National Economic Advisory Council submits it recommendation to President Smith that the United States abandon the gold standard. Smith decides not to heed their advice.
• May 6 - The Great Salmas Earthquake: Measuring 7.3 on the Richter Scale, an earthquake strikes the city of Salmas, Persia, killing 4,000 people.
• June 17 - U.S. President Al Smith signs the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act into law.
• June 26 - Vienna Assault: The Magyar Dominion army advances into Austria, razing houses and killing random civilians. They eventually surround the city of Vienna, where Emperor Maximilian and his family are holed up.

• Summer - The Anglo-Iraqi Treaty of 1930: The United Kingdom and the British Mandate-controlled administration of Iraq sign this historically controversial treaty. It was based upon an earlier treaty signed in 1922, but now took into account Iraq's increased importance to British interests given new oil finds made in 1927. The United Kingdom occupies Iraq under a mandate from the League of Nations. The main purpose of the treaty is to give the British a variety of exclusive commercial and military rights within the country after independence in exchange for which Iraq will get nothing. Critics point out that the treaty was not negotiated, but rather dictated to the British-controlled government so as to avoid any possibility of real negotiations with any post-independence government. The treaty gives the British almost unlimited rights to base military forces in Iraq. It further provides for the unconditional and unlimited right of the British to move troops into or through Iraq. While the treaty is approved, it may never come into effect because of unrest and large demonstrations in Iraq against it. Critics consider the treaty a sham document which, like every other treaty during the mandatory period, is nothing more than a legal cover for the British to permanently limit the independence of Iraq and to give themselves a legal right to intervene in the internal affairs of Iraq as they please. The treaties always revolved around protecting the illegal appropriation of the Iraqi oil resources by British Interests at the start of the mandate period and giving the British the right of military intervention in the country.

• July 30 - Uruguay beats Argentina 4-2 in the first soccer World Cup Final
• August 6 - Magyar forces storm the Schönbrunn Palace after the remaining Austrian forces break and run. Austrian Emperor Maximilian and his family are left without any defense. They are discovered deceased in their beds. It is later surmised that they all committed suicide by ingesting poison, rather than face the wrath of the Magyar soldiers. Their bodies are stripped naked and displayed outside the palace walls, impaled on 10 foot stakes.

• August 10 - Now that the Magyar-Austrian War is over, Austria is annexed by the Magyar Dominion, doubling their territory and firmly entrenching them as the main military force on the European continent.
• August 12 - Turkish troops move into Persia to fight Kurdish insurgents.
