RED SOX AND V'S SWEEP RACERS AND VIPERS IN IPA FIRST-ROUND UPSETS
There are many things you have to notice in the Islandian Pro Alliance playoffs this year... the teams are evenly matched, the pitching is superlative and there is an abundance of tight and tense ballgames, at least in the early stages... no telling who will survive such intense competition... will it be unsung Red Bluff, unnoticed Volusia or perhaps lightly-regarded Belair Beach?... or will it be the much-respected Turon Typhoons or well-regarded Wynnamac Sundowners?

In the Tycobbian Union the Red Bluff Red Sox served notice they are a genuine player for the 2070 Pro Cup Trophy... the Red Sox won two thrillers from defending IPA champion Rolling Hills and eliminated the proud and powerful Racers from the postseason playoffs by sweeping both games 7-6 and 4-3... Turon with sensational pitching also tamed the White River Rascals 3-1 and 2-0 to advance to the Tycobbian League Title Series aganst the red-hot Red Sox... in the Ruthlandian playoffs the Volusia Vigilantes have looked great upending favored Valmara in two straight intense affairs... the V's won 1-0 and 3-1 demonstrating a superlative pitching staff... they will take on the winner of the Wynnamac-Belair Beach affair.

The Macs and Sunbirds split the first two games in first-round Ruthlandian action and will play the third-game finale Tuesday afternoon... Wynnamac won the opener 5-3 over Belair Beach, but the Sunbirds bounced back and stayed alive with a 3-2 decision over the Sundowners Monday afternoon... the victor will play Volusia for the RU Title in a best-of-three series.

Yep, this has happened to them before in the last 11 seasons... the Racers were way ahead in game six and would have won the series four games to two, but the game crashed and I had to replay it... the Racers lost the last two games and the series four games to three.

I learned long ago not to dwell on OOTP's few flaws... it is a great game and one has to accept the little annoyances that come with a great game.
My problem in life is I prefer perfection... and many times EC does not get it... but life is still good.

"Rolling with the Flow" is a good philosophy of life.

I'm not too sure Rolling Hills would have won the Pro Cup this year... the players are showing their age... I hope Stonich and Mulbert retire this year... maybe Palazzi, too... his defense is really bad for a first baseman... it also will not be too long before Roubique takes off the spikes for the final time... he led the league in RBIs... but the end is near for all of the great Racers.

I hope they retire and not play too long like Willie Mays did... even my idol and all-time favorite player Stan Musial played too long... Stan the Man should have retired in 1958 and gone out on a super-duper skyhigh... that the way EC likes it in "his perfect world"... but Musial just couldn't hang 'em up... but he was a special player... look what he did in in 1962 at age 41... '59 through '63 wasn't embarrassing... Musial still was a fairly productive player.

If you look in my IPA thread I had a no-hitter interrupted due a freeze in the 7th inning. Luckily I had saved the progress and lost only two batters. I do this frequently for this very reason. I've lost intense games in the 8th inning after watching the entire thing and have had to restart from scratch. Very frustrating. It takes a little bit of time to exit and save, but it's well worth it.

I did lose 6 playoff games in my 1948 season due a computer issue that was separate from OOTP, but I had no patience to play out the games again, I just quick simmed to the point where it crashed and I moved on.

That 1962 season is incredible at any age, whether at 31 or 41.

FAVORED MACS ADVANCE TO RU TITLE ROUND IN CLOSE CALL WITH SUNBIRDS
Wynnamac was the higher choice than Belair Beach... the Macs were ranked the fourth-best team in the IPA playoffs, the Sunbirds were rated eighth and last in the postseason poll... but the teams were much closer than those ratings... the Ruthlandian Union first-round matchup was just about a close as you can get... the opener went to the Sundowners 5-3... the Sunbirds squeezed by 3-2 in game two... and the Macs escaped with an 8-7 cliffhanger in 12 innings in the third-and-decisive finale.

IPA ROUND TWO BEGINS THIS WEEKEND... 4 TOP TEAMS TANGLE FOR RU AND TU LEAGUE TITLES
With two of the top clubs eliminated in the first round of the Islandian Pro Alliance playoffs this year, the 2070 Pro Cup Trophy is up for grabs... last year's winner Rolling Hills is gone... #3 Valmara is gone... no telling who the overall IPA champion will be... left in the playoffs are #2 Turon, who bounced #5 White River... #4 Wynnamac, the winner over #8 Belair Beach... #6 Red Bluff, upset victor over the #1 Racers... and #7 Volusia, who bested #3 Valmara.

None of the remaining clubs really standout as a favorite... all of them depend on their mound corps instead of their bats... the Pro Cup champion this year will probably be determined by starters of each team... if they can go deep into the game, then that will be a big plus and save the wear-and-tear on the bullpen... in the first round some teams got a little desparate for solid relief... starters going deep and no extra-innings game could make a big difference.

In the Ruthlandian Union Title Series manager Nioka Inkamara and his Wynnamac Sundowners have a strong staff 1 through 8 overall and his offense handled the bats a little better than some of the other postseason squads did in the opening series... but the Macs better be ready... they will be facing the top pitching team in the IPA, the Volusia Vigilantes, with a superlative 2.82 ERA this season... the V's stopped a pretty good hitting bunch in round one, the Valmara Vipers, sweeping them in two very low-scoring games... Volusia manager Tubby Tarkanian has got to manufacture some runs some way to top the Macs.

Turon skipper Nate Stockdale had the same problem in the Tycobbian opening round... his Typhoons had to face the team with the second-best ERA in the IPA, White River with a terrific 2.87 ERA, but they did the job with some fine pitching of their own, topping the Rascals in two tight pitcher's duels... more of the same could be on the way... Stockdale better beware, the Red Bluff Red Sox put some runs on the scoreboard... to beat Rolling Hills they had to outscore them and they did... surprisingly, manager Ike Sweetwater's Red Sox outhit the Racers... and they had pitching good enough to slow down the Rolling Hills attack enough to win.

IPA Title Round Outlook:
Pitching will dominate as it has so far... the only real offense in the postseason was the long gone Rolling Hills Racers... in the Ruthlandian Union take the Macs in a super duel with the Volusia Vigilantes... Wynnamac starters are better than the V's and the Macs bats will put more runs on the scoreboard than the weak-hitting Vigilantes... could be the same story in the Tycobbian Title Round, too... looking at the regular-season statistics Wynnamac and Turon scored a lot more runs than Volusia and Red Bluff.

In Friday's series openers Volusia will travel to Wynnamac and Red Bluff will be in Turon... they will swap sites for games two... and then play third games, if needed, again in Wynnamac and Turon.

Around the Town in the Islandian Pro Alliance

WYNNAMAC SUNDOWNERS

Owner: Granger Co-Operative Association
GM/Manager: Nioka Inkamara

Wynnamac is a town of 86,000 residents and can be found about 50 miles inland from the Valerian Ocean, which is near the eastern coast of Ruthlandia. It is located in the northeastern part of the country in the Central Plains, which spans east to west across it and is a well-known farming region, filled with seemingly endless fields of ripe golden wheat and rustic farms. It is the "Breadbasket of Ruthlandia". Settled by a diverse band of hearty and hardworking Canadian and Australian immigrants, who worked "sunup to sundown". They became known as "Sundowners" because of their great work ethic and love for the land...and for their love of baseball and the homestanding Wynnamac Sundowners. The area is also a center for meat packing and dairy industries.

Life hasn't changed much here for several hundred years and probably won't change much in the next hundred years. Wynnamac is a member of the IPA's Ruthlandian East Division. The club plays at Granger Field, which is built right next to a grain processing plant with huge silos and a water tower with a gigantic ear of corn on it...all visible from the ballpark. The Sundowners are owned by the Granger Co-operative Association, farmers banded together for the common good and welfare.

At the concession stands you get nothing fancy...just soda pop, hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn, peanuts, crackerjacks and ice cream. However, they do serve a gourmet delicacy, a roasted ear of corn slathered in butter, mayonnaise, too, if you like...No beer or alcoholic beverages are permitted at the stadium. It is against the law in Wynnamac county and strictly enforced.

Wynnamac's longtime General Manager and Field Manager Jerry Meeks is now retired... Meeks is the famed Sundowner southpaw, who piled up a 313-214 record with an outstanding 2.93 career ERA... in 2013 he captured the Ruthlandian Most Valuable Player Award and also the RU Golden Arm trophy... Meeks played in Wynnamac his entire career from 2008 to 2028 and was named to the IPA Hall of Fame in 2029... he took command of the Macs in 2050 and captured 9 RU East pennants and one Pro Cup trophy (2055)... Meeks retired after the 2065 season... another Sundowner superstar and Hall-of-Famer Nioka Inkamara took charge of the baseball operations and is also the skipper... Inkamara had a colossal career in the IPA, playing with Wynnamac the first 12 years and the final two with the Bayview Vikings of the Tycobbian West... his career covered the period 2038 to 2051... Inkamara boasts a .303 lifetime BA with 488 home runs and 1385 RBIs... he was voted into the Islandian Pro Alliance Hall of Fame in 2057... Inkamara was a 5-time All-Star, 3-time Ruthlandian MVP, 2-time Golden Glove and the 2039 RU Rookie of the Year.

VOLUSIA VIGILANTES

Owner: Tierra Wools Consolidated

President/GM: Joaquin De la Hoya
Manager: Tubby Tarkanian

Volusia is a town of 99,000 on the banks of the Silver River in the rugged foothills of the Silver Mountains in west central Ruthlandia. In the early years Volusia was a gold and silver mining community. It was first settled by Spanish and English emigres, who after the gold ran out, became sheepherders and farmers. Now the area is known for fine woolen clothing and textiles. Timber and paper products are also produced.

The Spanish settlers were some of the earliest baseball enthusiasts in Ruthlandia and they organized the third amateur team in the country. Marston was the first, followed by La Grange. Because of the cultural tradition of "siestas", the Spanish played their games during this time of day, usually from 3 pm to 7 pm. Commerce and business would shut down. This custom and practice soon spread to the rest of the Ruthlandian townships and eventually to Tycobbia. The "siesta" in the Islands has come to mean quality time with family... and baseball fits this perfectly.

Many Volusians are bilingual, speaking Spanish and English. Volusia is a member of the IPA's Ruthlandian Union and plays in the West Division. It is the home of the Vigilantes, so named for the citizen-lawmen, who brought law and order to the lawless wild, wild west in the Gold Rush days. Officially the Vigilantes play at Silver River Stadium, overlooking the beautiful Silver River, but it is often referred to as "The Jail House" by the locals. Part of the old terracotta-colored jail can be seen in right field. The inmates get a good view of the V's games and "cheap" season tickets, too. The team is affectionately called "The Jail House Gang".

The lovely old ballpark, constructed in 1919, is located right across the street from the police station, which wraps around the stadium on one side. The massive live oak trees that still dominate the city park landscape were used many times in Volusia's early history for vigilante frontier justice. Over the beautiful brick arches and center field wall, the fans get a great view of the Silver River and the downtown area, just across the river from the stadium.

A wonderful Tex-Mex band provides great music during the games. The V's fans bring their sombreros and during the seventh inning stretch, they do a Mexican hat dance. Concessions are unique, too. Tantalizing tacos, fantastic flans (custard) and scruptious fried ice cream are among the culinary delicacies at Silver River Stadium. Frozen daiquiries and margaritas are house specialities. Hot dogs, cokes and beer are available, too.

The Volusia Vigilantes are owned by Tierra Wools, a farm cooperative for sheep owners, weavers and spinners to market their products. Joaquin De la Hoya is the president and general manager of the club with Tubby Tarkanian as the field manager. Tarkanian was a good defensive catcher and modest hitter... he played 16 seasons with the V's, retired in '54 and was made skipper in '55... Tarkanian batted .262 in his career with 166 roundtrippers and 800 RBIs.

Volusia won the inaugural IPA Pro Cup in 2001, sweeping the Ginza Ninjas of the Tycobbian Union in four games. The Vigilantes had finished second in the regular season to the Far Mountain Redhawks in the Ruthlandian North Division... in the early years the IPA had wild card teams in the postseason.

TURON TYPHOONS

Owner: Anastas International Shipping
GM: C. C. Kingsford
Manager: Nate Scottsdale

Turon is a seaport town of 118,000 in the Caledonia River basin on the southwestern coast of Tycobbia and its second largest population-wise. The Caledonia River terminates here after winding 500 miles from east to west from Red Bluff in the central Silver Mountains southward through Hillsboro and then flowing westward near the towns of South Fork, Denton City and Arlon. The river finally comes to an end in Turon and empties into the Kelnyck Ocean and Southern Sea.

It is a cosmopolitan town with a diversified economy and a mecca for tourists. Turon is a busy trade and distribution center with many shipping interests. Agriculture flourishes here with extensive farmlands in the Caledonia River basin. It is also a diversity of cultures and was settled in the 1840s and 1850s by French, Scottish, Irish and German settlers, who came to get away from religious intolerance and persecution. Southerners from the United States came in good numbers after the Civil War defeat. Turon became their New South, but minus the slave culture.

Turon is resplendent with beauty. Streets and boulevards lined with grand live oak trees and antebellum mansions. In the countryside are majestic plantations. Near the coast you'll find sugar-white sandy beaches. You'll find plenty of Old World in Turon, but also plenty of the Modern World, too.

The Turon Typhoons of the IPA's South Division play in a very modern baseball palace, Typhoon Stadium. It is built with concrete and steel to withstand the occasional typhoon that emanates from the cold and icy waters of the Kelnyck Ocean. The old ballpark was completely destroyed twice in 1938 and 1967. The new stadium was completed in 1999 and houses the Tycobbian Baseball Hall of Fame, a must-see for all Islandian baseball fans. It covers the entire spectrum and includes memorabilia from the amateur, college and industrial leagues.

The Typhoons really are active promoters with something going on each inning during the ballgames. All kinds of promotions, games and stunts to enliven and entertain the fans. Wild music tracks fill the stadium to rally the Typhoons and their fans. Concessions are stocked with all of the traditional ballpark delights.

Turon is owned by the family of wealthy shipping tycoon, Onnie Anastas III. One of the most successful GMs and managers was Ashton “Whitey” Richburn, one of the finest defensive center fielders and lead-off men in Tycobbian amateur baseball history... he ran the club for the first few decades, which were the "glory years" of Turon baseball, when they won four Gold Cups (2003, 2005, 2008, 2018)... Richburn was followed by a father-son team, the great Hall-of-Famers Clyde Kingsford and C. C. Kingsford... the elder Kingsford hit .319 for 14 seasons and hit 486 out of the park with the Typhoons and was inducted into the IPA Hall of Fame in 2029 and is now the general manager-emeritus... his son is the current GM... C. C. starred for Turon for 19 seasons, batting .308 with 432 homers... the younger Kingsford was an 8-time All-Star and played from 2034 to 2051... he was installed and joined his father into the Islandian Pro Alliance Hall of Fame in 2061... C. C. Kingsford retired as skipper and took over as General Manager... another fine Turon star took over in 2068... Nate Scottsdale assumed the managerial reins after a standout career on the mound... he also ended up in the IPA Hall of Fame, finishing up with a 362-277 record with a 3.44 ERA... Stocksdale played his entire career in Turon from 2037 to 2056... 8 times in his career he won 20 or more games... he did it 5 times in his final 6 seasons when he was in his late 30s... Stocksdale made the Hall of Fame in 2057.

Around the Town in the Islandian Pro Alliance

Red Bluff Red Sox

Owner: Mack Connery Philanthropic Foundation
General Manager: Mack Connery IV
Manager: Ike Sweetwater

Red Bluff, population 72,000, is located in the isolated and hard-to-get-to Silver Mountains in east central Tycobbia. With iron ore mining and steel production as the main industries, it is the headquarters of Ettellig, makers of the most popular razors and razor blades in the Islands and the famous "Look sharp, be sharp” slogan. The town is literally cut out of rock and gets its name from the red-colored bluffs of iron ore rocks visible high beyond the outfield fences of Red Bluff Park, the home of the Red Bluff Red Sox. Red Bluff Steel and Mining Company is the biggest employer in the town.

The ballpark is an anachronism, a throwback to days of yore, but the Red Bluff fans have repeatedly voted down building a new modern stadium to replace their beloved ball field. Since flat land is at a premium in Red Bluff, it looks like Red Bluff Park will be safe for quite a few more years. Mack Connery was the original owner of the team. In the early 2000s Connery was instrumental in creating the Islandian Pro Alliance in concert with Jock Ewing, owner at Waleska, John Banson, the League Commissioner, Jorge Trujillo of Belair Beach, Brent Steiner of Bayview, Rock ’n’ roll star and Cape Coral owner, Conway Birdie and jazz entertainer Louis “Sugar Lips” Charles of Bay St. Clair.

Connery, the long-time and very frugal president, general manager and manager of the Red Sox, probably went to heaven with the first dollar he ever made. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word. Connery even wore a suit and tie in the dugout. Mack Connery IV is the present guiding hand of the Red Sox. He succeeded all of his namesakes. His great-grandfather reigned until 2020, winding up his career at age 90, his grandfather retired in 2040 and his father called it a day in 2050. Mack Connery did it all. He was owner, GM and skipper. After his retirement, his offspring just ran the front office and didn't handle the club on the field. Connery was a baseball man on the field and off the field.

Red Bluff Park is a hitter's heaven for righthanded batters. It's only 310 feet down the line and just 360 to center. If you like lots of homers and scoring, you get it here. With the frugal Connery family all you get on the field is the basics, no high-priced stars. And all you get at the concession stands are just the basics: no fancy gourmet food or drink, just beer, soft drinks, lemonade, hamburgers, hot dogs, peanuts and crackerjacks. There are no silly promotions, either. But the Red Bluffians wouldn’t have it any other way. No yuppies, preppies, techies or boomers here. They are just hardworking, blue-collared miners that just love baseball. They love their old Red Bluff Park and all of the Mack Connery family.

Red Bluff is currently managed by a former star player, center fielder Ike Sweetwater. He starred for the Red Sox from 2032 to 2050, a five-time All-Star and Golden Glove defender. Lifetime Sweetwater batted .285 and walloped 521 homers. He took command of Red Bluff's diamond operations in 2051... Sweetwater had led the Red Sox to four pennants and also captured the 2057 Pro Cup.

IPA LEAGUE TITLE SERIES' OPENERS HOTLY-CONTESTED
Baseball at its ever-lovin' best... maybe nearly 'bout at its ultimate... that's an apt description of the Islandian Pro Alliance playoffs this year... there have been 11 battle royals duked out played so far... 7 of them decided by a single, solitary run... the other 4 were semi-blowouts, so to speak... resolved by the vast sum of 2 runs... it's not very far from heartbreak to heaven in the IPA... just ask the dearly departed, the reigning Pro Cup king Rolling Hills, Valmara, Belair Beach and White River, all vanquished in the first round of play.

Guess what?... the second round is picking right up where the opening round left off with more nip-and-tuck drama... it was all Volusia could do to beat Wynnamac 5-4 in the first game of the Ruthlandian Finals... over in the Tycobbian Finals Turon tensed out a 1-0 verdict over the Red Bluff Red Sox... the Vigilantes got the winning score in the top of the ninth... and the Typhoons finally put a run on the empty and lonely scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth.

RU, TU LEAGUE TITLE SERIES GO THE LIMITS, V'S AND MACs, SOX AND TYPHOONS TANGLE IN 3RD-GAME FINALES
Sunday afternoon in the Islandian Pro Alliance League Championship Series the winners will advance and the losers will spend a long, lonesome winter at home, thinking about what could have been.

Wynnamac and Red Bluff staved off elimination with clutch victories yesterday... the Macs tamed Volusia 5-2 and the Red Sox nipped Turon 3-2 to force third-and-decisive games this afternoon.

Just in case any of you are going to vacation in the Islands and attend the Pro Cup Series, here is a map that should be very useful to you.

Just in case you didn't know... no cells phones, social media and GPS are allowed in Ruthlandia and Tycobbia.

Yep, it is a quaint country... life is much slower paced and more civil than in some places you might be more familiar with.

And if you are fan of baseball games, you might check out an Island-produced game called "IPAPBA" (Islandian Pro Alliance Professional Baseball Aparatus)... it is a board baseball game played with dice and cards and based on mathematical probability.

When my favorite team gets rained out in the IPA, EC plays at home, just like when I was a kid... on rainy days when it's too muddy on the playground or sandlot to play baseball, some of us would head to Buddy Dansey's house for a day of IPAPBA... pronounced "IP-AP-BUH".

I know I have 16 teams that aren't on the map because I expanded. A good place for New Yerby could be on the east coast north of Eastshore. New Yerby is in the Ruthlandia Union East so that works. However, I have the New Yerby Mets in the Tycobbia Union East, so they would have to be somewhere in the mountains. That doesn't really work unless there's another New Yerby in Tycobbia. Guess I wasn't really thinking when I placed the new teams.

However, I see the Ruthlandia/Tycobbia as more of an AL/NL thing, so I guess it's all right. I can either create a new map for myself do a small realignment if I wanted to.

I would add the new teams for you, but there's no room on the map.

MACS AND TYPHOONS TRIM V'S AND RED SOX IN LEAGUE TITLE ROUNDS... WILL MEET FOR THE PRO CUP TITLE
Strong pitching prevailed in the semi-final round of the Islandian Pro Alliance postseason playoffs... Wynnamac clinched the Ruthlandian Union title with a thorough 11-2 trashing of the Volusia Vigilantes in the third game of the series... and it was the Turon Typhoons trouncing the Red Bluff Red Sox 7-2 in the deciding game of the Tycobbian Union title clash... it could more of the same in the 2070 edition of the IPA Pro Cup Series... both clubs were victorious two games to one in the best-of-three series.

Yep, Wynnamac has won two Pro Cups... 2008 and 2055... made the postseason 17 times.

Turon has won four Pro Cups... 2003, 2006, 2009, 2018... made the postseason 21 times.
