John Bateman

In 1970 sportswriter Ted Blackman quipped, “If John Bateman bought a pumpkin farm, they’d cancel Halloween.” The luckless reference was to the cursed timing of a kidney injury that hospitalized the Montreal Expos starting catcher two days before the start of the 1970 season, yet also serves to describe Bateman’s often ill-fated life. Initially, his 11-year professional career appeared charmed when, in response to a 1962 letter-writing campaign to various major-league clubs, Bateman found himself the starting catcher for the Houston Colt .45s a year later. Injury and inexperience — one year in Class C before his major-league debut — foiled a budding career and limited Bateman to less than 3,600 plate appearances. But baseball proved a fortunate pursuit for John Alvin Bateman for without it, this hard-living youngster’s life might have played out far worse. - SABR

I looked at many pictures of him. Interesting face. Kept the pockmarks hence the texture on it. But I trust you have gone to File Settings in the game and already boosted the detail to max for facegens on the pop-up tab and so can appreciate them...

Thanks for mentioning you like the write-ups! I try

He is a sports Zelig — experiencing brushes with greatness over and over, though never getting there himself. He ties Tom Brady to Derek Jeter more closely than a mansion on Tampa’s Davis Islands does. He played for Joe Torre, George Steinbrenner and the Yankees, and he played for Bill Parcells, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys. He — not Jeter — is arguably the greatest schoolboy baseball player ever produced by the state of Michigan. He — not Brady — is the last University of Michigan quarterback to beat Ohio State in Columbus.

Yet an athlete once compared to Mike Schmidt in one sport and to John Elway in another totaled one major league hit and one NFL touchdown pass. His failure at third base led to Aaron Boone, and then Alex Rodriguez, for the Yankees. His failure at quarterback led to Tony Romo’s rise for the Cowboys. - NY Post

Drew was on my list as well, so when I finally got to him, I remembered I owed him to you...

Thanks! This is awesome! Sorry for the delayed response, just saw this!

Lans, do you still have a copy of what I believe is a prior version of your Manny Sanguillen, sans mustache? I'm playing a historical game as the Pirates in the '60's, when no players had facial hair.

No, but as a rule, any "before" picture can be fished out of the link on the first page of the CUF thread via FS' last update in May 2022.

Goodness! Ernie is frightening! I'll do one for him. I know Scott Radinsky as a White Sox reliever from about 20 years ago. I can't locate a Giant with a similar name. Can you double check that one?

Ernie Johnson

A right-handed relief pitcher whose major-league career spanned the entire decade of the 1950s, Ernie Johnson retired with a lifetime record of 40-23 and an ERA of 3.77 in 273 games. “Maybe not the stuff of Cooperstown,” remembered Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews, a former teammate, “but damn it, the man could pitch.” Johnson’s even greater claim to fame, however, was as a television broadcaster for the Atlanta Braves His 52-year association with the Braves was the longest of any person in the organization.

He was initially invited to the Braves spring training camp in 1950. While he was signed to basically serve as a batting practice pitcher, he pitched so well that he ended up making the Sox Opening Day roster. “[T]he Braves said I came down to Spring training only to pitch batting practice. I thought I was down here to get a shot at a job. I figured I had a chance because there were so many young pitchers on the team and I gave it everything I had,” he said. His arsenal included a palmball, which had a similar effect as a knuckleball. - SABR & ripbaseball.com

Given his long association with the Braves, I, of course, used a picture from his one year as an Oriole.

Terry Bevington (manager)

Terry Bevington had trouble communicating with his players, had strained relations with some of his coaches, alienated the media and turned off the fans. But his biggest problem was the Chicago White Sox’s failure to make the playoffs, despite a huge payroll and the addition of Albert Belle. For all of that, Bevington was fired as manager. The move was announced Tuesday, two days after the end of an 80-81 season and another second-place finish in the AL Central. - LA Times, OCT. 1, 1997

None of that reporting mentions the time he signals for a reliever, and no one was warming up, nor could it anticipate the Fisticuffs at Foothills (the infamous 2006 brawl between the Calgary Vipers and Edmonton Cracker-Cats) or when two years later he pulled his Shreveport team off the field against the Grand Prairie AirHogs, leading to a forfeit and mostly likely leading to his firing. Here's my coach pic of him using the coach First_Last naming convention. There was no "before" to be found.

Scott Radinsky

“If you do stink it up today, you get to come out the next day and get another shot,” said Scott Radinsky. “That’s why I love being a reliever.” A hard-throwing left-hander, Radinsky was never afraid of failure, or a challenge. He made a big jump from Single A to the majors, debuting with the Chicago White Sox in 1990. After leading the staff in appearances for three straight seasons (1991-1993), he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and missed the entire 1994 season. Still weak when he returned to the South Siders a year later, he moved on to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1996 and had three productive seasons. After Radinsky overcame cancer, two elbow operations, including Tommy John surgery, ended his career.

Radinsky was more than just a dependable middle reliever and occasional closer who appeared in 557 big-league games in parts of 11 seasons. Described by Jeff Torborg, his first big-league skipper, as “a young, aggressive athlete,” and a “raw, strong, hard-throwing kid — a free spirit,” Radinsky was a brutally honest realist whose greatest passion might have been music, and he served as a frontman in several critically acclaimed Los Angeles-based bands, including Pulley, which was still performing as of 2016. “I’m a punk rocker,” he told Franz Lidz of Sports Illustrated in 1997. “I’m crazy about playing ball, but it’s just a sideline.” - SABR

After he finished playing, he was on the Indians' staff, hence the non-Sox or Dodger uniform in the pic and screenshot.

Just a photoshop request this time LansdowneSt... Can you removed that guy smile for me to create his FG? I just want the image since it's an easy FG to do.

In case somebody's curious the cleaner and bigger image came from that small one posted in the image thread runs in the AI tool I use for my works...

This is prob sufficient to trick the software into making the mouth lips in facegen. wide smiles like that are tough as the result can look very "smirky" (for lack of a better word).
