We sent C Don Kern (27-R) to Daytona (A) to work on his swing and recalled C Jim Hess (34-R). We are in New Orleans to play the Pelicans a 4 game series through the weekend. They just split a pair of games here with Birmingham and have won 4 of their last 5. We split 4 games with them in Jacksonville, May 20-23. They are 14th in scoring with 3.66 runs per game (Jacksonville is up to #7 with 4.03). The Pelicans are tied for 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.34 per game (Jacksonville is tied for 1st with 3.27!). I have disparaged our Bullpen, but their ERA is 2.90, 4th best in the MLB. Our starters have a 2.89 ERA, 2nd best. New Orleans has a run differential of -44, 13th best in the MLB, and ours is +49, now 2nd best and finally ahead of Orlando in the South by 1 run! Jacksonville Jays (42-22 .656 3.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) at New Orleans Pelicans (30-35 .462 12.5 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division) JAX: Al Calice (23-R) (3-4 3.31 ERA 73.1 IP, 63 H, 7 HR, 26 BB, 33 SO) Rookie NO: Brian Ragazzo (22-L) (4-5 3.46 ERA 75.1 IP, 71 H, 2 HR, 32 BB, 47 SO) Rookie Calice gave up 1 run on 3 hits and 4 walks with a career high 6 strikeouts in 7.2 innings last time out in a win. He has allowed 2 or fewer runs in his last 3 starts. We beat Ragazzo in May, but only scored 3 runs on 8 hits and 5 walks with 3 strikeouts in 7 innings. Won - 6 to 0 10 wins in a row! A new team record! We won 9 in a row in 2002 to start the month of June. What are the odds that Jim Baucom ends our winning streak tomorrow? We have won 10 in a row and he has won 13 in a row... Seems a cinch we lose tomorrow.... Richmond has won 6 in a row, so we are not pulling away from them.... At bat, he had a hit. He wins his 15th game of the season, setting a new Jay record! Editor's Note: The game mistakenly counted the final Birmingham run as earned for Baucom. If he loses the ERA title because of this, I will be angry, but will not manually override it because I have no way of knowing if any other pitchers have been screwed by the official scorers. Their decisions are final.... However, I have made a bug report on the issue.... RHP Robbie Hopley made an unfortunate pickoff attempt, but faced 3 batters and struck them all out! Jim Dotterweich (L 2-2) went 3.2 innings, gave us 7 runs, 5 hits, 1 home run, 3 walks and struck out 2. 2B Charlie Faber hit a double, scored a run and had 3 RBI. We are back home to play the Rochester Roosters a 4 game series through the weekend. They are the last MLB team we have yet to face this season. They split a pair of games at home with Providence on Monday and Tuesday. We were 6-2 against them last year when they finished 72-90 in 6th place in the North. They are 11th in scoring with 3.90 runs per game (Jacksonville is tied for 7th with 4.10). The Roosters are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.04 per game (Jacksonville is #1 with 3.19). Their run differential is -10, 11th best in the MLB, and ours is +64, 2nd best. Rochester Roosters (34-37 .479 10 GB in 5th place in the Northern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (46-24 .657 3.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) ROCH: Steve Weston (28-L) (6-7 2.95 ERA 106.2 IP, 80 H, 8 HR, 39 BB, 110 SO) All-Star(2: 01-02)/Silver Slugger(02) JAX: Al Calice (23-R) (4-4 3.06 ERA 79.1 IP, 68 H, 7 HR, 31 BB, 36 SO) Rookie Weston is Jim Baucom's chief rival for the lead in strikeouts. He is currently 2nd to Jim, but could pass him today with a double digit effort. He is their #1 starter. He was 10-13 with a 3.54 ERA in 224 IP last year. The Richmond Robins are here to play a short 2 game set. They split 4 games with the Arrows in Indianapolis over the weekend. We are 2-5 against them on the season and were swept in 3 games the first time they visited us,. getting outscored, 27 to 12. They are 2nd in scoring, 1 run behind the leader, Buffalo, with 4.80 runs per game (Jacksonville is up to #6 with 4.15!). The Robins are hitting an amazing .285 as a team and are 2nd in walks, which means they lead the MLB with a .345 OBP. We do not have a lot of batters with a .345 OBP.... They also lead in doubles (131) and triples (28) and are 1 behind us in SB with 70. Their OPS is 50 points higher than ours (.750 to .700). The Robins are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.32 per game (Jacksonville is still #1 with 3.32). Their run differential is +36, 5th best, and ours is +61, 2nd best. Richmond Robins (45-30 .600 3.5 GB in 2nd place in the Southern Division) at Jacksonville Jays (48-26 .649 3.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) RICH: Billy Warner (25-R) (6-3 1.96 ERA 73.1 IP, 58 H, 4 HR, 17 BB, 60 SO) All-Star JAX: Jim Baucom (23-L) (15-0 1.41 ERA 127.2 IP, 80 H, 3 HR, 17 BB, 119 SO) All-Star(2: 02-03) Warner is their #1 starter. We faced him in April and beat him, but only scored 1 run on 2 hits and a home run with 4 strikeouts in 3.2 innings when he had to leave with an injury. He has not allowed more than 1 run in any of his last 4 starts. He has been tougher on lefties than righties in his career and we only have 3 righties in the lineup.... Baucom gave up 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks with 7 strikeouts in 8 innings last time out in a win. I got a bad feeling that today is the day for loss #1..... Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS-SB DEF) RICHMOND 1: CF Jose Vazquez (31-R .296-250-3-25-.765-4 B) All-Star(3: 01-03)/Gold Glove(2: 01-02) .429 vs Baucom 2: SS Skip Dunkin (25-S .357-126-1-12-.817-11 B) .400 vs Baucom 3: 2B Ray Holloway (30-R .265-181-4-24-.705-3 B+) All-Star(01) 4: RF Andres Borges (36-S .261-115-1-12-.729-2 C) All-Star(2: 02-03) 5: 3B Vince Depew (23-L .333-288-6-46-.884-12 C) 6: LF Andy Schaeffer (40-R .172-58-3-10-.614-0 C+) 7: 1B Carlos Frias (23-R .252-123-3-15-.684-2 B) Rookie #12 prospect 8: C Larry Slattery (28-R .252-135-6-20-.802-0 C) 9: P Billy Warner (25-R .207-29-0-2-.414-0 F) All-Star JACKSONVILLE 1: 2B Charlie Faber (33-R .298-275-0-31-.733-7 B+) 2: RF Fernando Tello (22-L .282-181-3-20-.698-0 C) Rookie 3: CF Cal Doty (27-L .327-284-5-30-.856-12 C+) 4: LF Ray McDonald (24-L .316-225-11-50-.931-7 B+) 5: 3B Tom McDowell (27-R .266-263-14-51-.814-4 C+) 6: 1B Jack Washburn (22-L .237-236-9-25-.696-18 B) 7: SS Bart Daw (32-R .242-194-3-21-.662-14 B+) 8: C Bert Swope (32-S .252-151-0-15-.614-1 B) 9: P Jim Baucom (23-L .116-43-0-2-.272-0 C) All-Star(2: 02-03) Game Start: 7:05 PM Ballpark: Connie Mack Stadium Weather: 83 F, Overcast, with a 7 MPH wind blowing in from center Attendance: 10,356 Top of the First Jose Vazquez lines the first pitch of the game to center for a hit.... Skip Dunkin lines the second pitch of the game to center for a hit.... Ray Holloway swings at a 3-2 pitch and doubles to right and Vazquez scores... 1 to 0, Robins. I envisioned the first loss as a 1 to 0 affair against another star pitcher like we are facing to day, but they are going to maul P Jim Baucom.... Andres Borges lines out hard to right and Dunkin tags up and scores.... 2 to 0, Robins. Vince Depew grounds out to short and Holloway goes to 3rd. A wild pitch scores Holloway.... 3 to 0, Robins. Andy Schaeffer strikes out. Bottom of the First Charlie Faber grounds out to 2nd. Fernando Tello swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to left. Cal Doty strikes out.... Bottom of the Second P Jim Baucom strikes out their 7-8-9 hitters in order! We load the bases up on 2 walks and an error with 2 outs in the 2nd, but P Jim Baucom is at the plate and he pops out to the catcher.... Through 6 innings, we have 2 hits... Bottom of the Seventh Tom McDowell lines a 3-2 pitch to right center for a double! But the next three make outs with 2 strikeouts.... Lost - 3 to 0 We had 3 whole hits and made 2 errors Richmond had 7 hits and made 2 errors Jim Baucom (L 15-1) went 8 innings, allowed 3 runs, 7 hits, 1 walk (INT) and struck out 7. He threw a WP. 116 pitches. RHP Robbie Hopley pitched a perfect inning. Billy Warner (W 7-3) pitched 9 shutout innings (CG), gave us 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 8. He threw a WP. 133 pitches. At bat, he had a hit. Game Score of 87 is a new high for an opponent this season. It is his 2nd shutout of the season and 7th of his career. 3 of them have been against the Jays, the most by any opponent. 3B Tom McDowell had 2 hits with a double. |

We are in Memphis to play the Mules a 3 game series over the weekend. They just split a pair of games in Orlando. We won 3 of 4 games in our first visit to Tennessee, April 29 - May 2. They are 12th in scoring with 3.89 runs per game (Jacksonville is #7 with 4.13). The Mules are 5th in OPS (.711) and should be scoring more than they are. We are 11th in OPS (.695) and should be scoring less than we are... They are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 4.01 per game (Jacksonville is back to #1 with 3.29!). Their run differential is -10 and ours is +65, now 3rd behind Buffalo (+101) and Orlando (+70). Orlando is 9-16 in 1 run games and we are 18-7. We have the most 1 run wins, but Syracuse has a better record at 14-5. Nobody is worse than Orlando.
