1950 Major League Final Leaderboards
HOW ABOUT THAT! My hero Stan "The Man" Musial won the Natianal League batting title... but my Cardinals fizzled in the second half and came in fifth, 12 GB behind the Phillies. American League Last edited by Eugene Church; 08-08-2019 at 04:23 PM. |

MY LIFE IS REALLY NIFTY IN 1950
It was real nifty for the baseball world, too... it was the season of the Whiz Kids... for the first time since 1915, the perennial also-rans in the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies, won the pennant and returned to the World Series... one of my all-time favorite players, Robin Roberts, pitched in three of the last five games of the season, nailing down the pennant... ah, those were the good old days... outfielders Richie Ashburn and Del Ennis were on the team, too... and Willie "Puddin' Head" Jones at third base... behind the plate was Andy Seminick, who hit 24 out of the park and gave them much veteran leadership for the rookie team... and don't forget Jim Konstanty, the first notable closer in history, was vital to the Phillies' pennant... Konstanty is the only reliever to be voted Most Valuable Player... he appeared in 74 games, won 16 and saved 22... even started the first game of the World Series because Roberts needed some rest... he lost 1-0 to Vic Raschi… 1950 was a very special season for the Philadelphia Phillies. The whole season came down to the last day... second place Brooklyn was one game behind first place Philadelphia... a Dodger victory would force a best-of-three playoff series... but Robin Roberts beat the Dodgers 4-1 in 10 innings, nipping Don Newcombe in a good old-fashioned pitching duel... left fielder Del Ennis slammed a three-run homer to send the Whiz Kids to the World Series for the first time in 35 years. Unbelievable!... the Whiz Kids whipped the legendary Dodgers and Don Newcombe, Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, Gil Hodges, Carl Erskine, Preacher Roe and Carl Furillo. But the legendary Yankees put a quick end to the Whiz Kids' dream season... the New Yorkers won in four straight games... but it was closer than it looks... three games decided by one run. Check out the photo of DiMaggio's catch in game 2... arguably one of the greatest catches of all-time in the World Series... it rivals Willie Mays' catch in 1954. The Yankees' experienced mound corps with Vic Raschi, Whitey Ford, Allie Reynolds and Eddie Lopat was just too much for the young Phils… Philadelphia did not get a home run in the four games... but then again, the mighty Bronx Bombers only had two... Joltin' Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra. BE SURE TO ENLARGE THE IMAGES BY CLICKING THEM Last edited by Eugene Church; 08-04-2019 at 06:06 PM. |

Monday, March 12, 1951 OLDTIMERS ON TOP OF NIRL SECOND DIVISION Demotion has been good to the Avalon Oldtimers... they are now on top of the North Island Recreational League Second Division, unbeaten so far in this young season... Avalon smacked Theodore 9-6 yesterday afternoon for their second win in a row in their new league... their fellow travelers, the Wafford Eagles, also fared well with a 10-0 shellacking of the Kinston Firebirds... the Eagles were also demoted from the First Division this year... in the third game on the NIRL slate, preseason favorite Joliet trounced West Chester 11-0. |

Wow!
I just figured out a new way to post the game box score elements... not only is it quicker and easier to do... it looks much better... you can now easily read the contents and do not need to click on the images like before. |

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN 1951?
1951 unemployment dipped to 3.3% in the US... and new roads highways were built to take the ever increasing numbers of cars... the New Jersey Turnpike was opened. Children were given more than any other time in previous history with guitar lessons and sets of Encyclopedias to improve their minds... certainly didn't know it then, but I must have been poor and neglected... never got any music lessons... never got a set of encyclopedias, either... had to go to the public library to do my book reports and research... I still got a very fine education without that set of Encyclopedia Brittanica... actually, I was not neglected... there was always plenty of tender, loving care and love at my house. The average family income was $3,700 per year and people had money to spend, so cars became more luxurious and had more powerful engines with options for two-tone paint, during this time things like turn signals were still an extra and most drivers still used hand signals to tell other drivers which way they were turning. Television continued to grow with popular programs like "I Love Lucy" and the first tests for Color Television Pictures were broadcast from Empire State Building on June 25th... Europe continued to export many cars to the US including Volkswagens and Austins… Looking back, we didn't have a car of our own... my dad worked at a used car lot in New Orleans as a salesman... Fairchild Motors... at the corner of Gentilly Boulevard and Elysian Fields Avenue... he would just take one of the cars home at night and use one on the weekend... otherwise we just had to use the public transportation system... good old buses and streetcars in New Orleans to get youself around... you could ride across the whole city from Audubon Park Zoo to New Orleans East where I lived for 7 cents... 5 cents for a ticket and I think 2 cents if you had to get transfers... it really was a well-run system... the buses ran often and would eventually get you where you were going. We still didn't have TV... they were too expensive... but my next-door neighbor had one and Mrs. Maier would let me watch wrestling from Municipal Auditorium every weekend... she would also let me watch Tulane Green Wave basketball, too... WDSU-TV, channel 6, was the only station in town... a guy named Mel Leavitt did everything for the WDSU... he would do play-by-play for both the wresting and also the Greenies basketball games... Leavitt must have worked sunup to sundown... and later... during the day he was the "booth announcer"... everything was live at this time... no tape machines yet. Actually, we didn't miss TV... there wasn't much to watch on it anyway... we all preferred the movies, which had that wonderful thing called "air-conditioning"... we didn't have it in our house... too expensive. Monday, March 19, 1951 NEWCOMERS DOING WELL IN NIRL FIRST DIVISION After three weeks of play in the North Island First Division, the two newcomers, Dutton and Jackson, are riding high in first place with spotless 3-0 records... holdover club New Yerby (2-1) is in the third spot... last year's champion Kofa is off to a slow start at 1-2... winless and in the cellar are Union Heights and Stockdale, both 0-3. Jackson topped Union Heights 11-6... Dutton trashed Stockdale 7-2 and New Yerby outlasted arch rival Kofa 8-5 in 10 innings. |

My Life: Just Having Fun in 1951
Since the most important things in EC's life are Movies, Music and a little bit of Sports at this time... Sports would be far more important later on as the years go by. Here are the top 10 movies of 1951... us kids didn't see a whole bunch of them... way, way too adult... we always preferred the Saturday Matinees with all of our rootin', tootin' and shootin' western heroes, like Hoppy, Gene and Roy... and our favorite war hero of all-time, John Wayne, who single-handedly whipped the Japanese in World War II... that's the way we viewed our world at the time. Personally, I saw the biblical epics "Quo Vadis" and "David And Bathsheba"... guess I went to "Quo Vadis" because of the sword fighting... and Lions in the Coliseum devouring the Christians... and maybe to see little ole David whoop up on big bad Goliath. In my later years I saw "African Queen"... a very, very entertaining movie with two greats, Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart... wonderful dialogue in the movie... I also saw it as a 10-year-old kid, but couldn't appreciate it at the time... maybe if Bogie had fought a lion or tiger like David did, it might been a fairly decent movie. The problem with modern day movies is that they depend way too much on action and special effects and have very little as far a plot and dialogue. As far as the rest of the top 10 movies, I must have had to go to them with my parents... A Place in the Sun was terrible... so was Stranger on the Train... personally didn't care for Showboat... never have been into Broadway musicals... except for Oklahoma, The King and I, Fiddler on the Roof and My Fair Lady. Never have seen Alice in Wonderland, An American in Paris, Pandora and the Flying Dutchman and A Streetcar Named Desire... never had a desire to see any of them, either. Brando screaming "Stella" never did anything for me, back then or now. But I did ride the Streetcar Named Desire in the French Quarter in New Orleans when I lived there... yeah, it was a nice ride... I like the streetcars... especially the Canal Street, St. Charles Street and the Carrollton Avenue streetcars... if you ever go to New Orleans, be sure to ride one of them. And go eat at Mandina's, a really good neighborhood restaurant and bar on Canal Street... just very good comfort food at reasonable prices... the portions are huge... split a meal with someone and still have plenty to eat... not like the touristy overpriced fancy French restaurants elsewhere in the town... they just put on a show for the tourists...while the food is just average... stay clear of the so-called number one restaurant in town... Commander's Palace... just recently went there... it's way overpriced and bland... but the upstairs dining room give you a fine panoramic view and if you like martinis... at lunch they are 15 cents each... limit of three. I'm a teetotaler... much prefer an iced-cold RC Cola to a Bud or Jack Daniels... or a martini. Last edited by Eugene Church; 08-10-2019 at 08:19 PM. |

Monday, March 19, 1951 4-WAY TIE IN NIRL SECOND DIVISION West Chester, Joliet, Wafford and Avalon are all atop the North Island Recreational League Second Division after three weeks of action... all of them have identical 2-1 records... the other two clubs Theodore and Kinston are winless so far. The West Chester Comets knocked the Avalon Oldtimers from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 4-3 triumph... the Joliet Green Giants toppled Kinston 4-2 and sent the Firebirds to their third loss in a row... and the Wafford Eagles plastered the Theodore Bobcats 8-1. Saturday, March 24, 1951 BIG GAMES ON TAP TOMORROW IN NIRL There are several standout games in the North Island Recreational League tomorrow afternoon... in the First Division, last year's champion, Kofa (1-2), goes up against the winner of the Second Division last year, the Dutton Coyotes (3-0)... another important clash on the agenda is the Jackson Jackalopes (3-0) and the New Yerby Yankees (2-1)... the Coyotes and Jacks are both unbeaten in their new division after finishing 1-2 in the Second Division last season... also on the slate are the cellar-dwellers, the Stockdale Mustangs (0-3) and the Union Heights Hackers (0-3)... neither club has made the victory column this season. In Second Division play Sunday, two co-leaders, the Wafford Eagles (2-1) and Joliet Green Giants (2-1) face one another... West Chester (2-1) will be on the road against winless Theodore (0-3) and Avalon (2-1) will be at home playing Kinston (0-3). |

Monday, March 26, 1951 DUTTON TAKES THE TOP SPOT IN FIRST DIVISION Yesterday afternoon with some big help from the New Yerby Yankees, the unbeaten Dutton Coyotes took possession of first place in North Island Recreational League First Division... the Yanks (3-1) knocked the Jackson Jackalopes (3-1) out of the ranks of the unbeaten 3-1 and enabled Dutton (4-0) to move up all alone in the top spot... the Coyotes climbed into the driver's seat with a 6-1 battering of last year's division winner, the Kofa Kings (1-3)... the worst teams in the league had a bang-up game in Union Heights, where the Hackers whipped the Stockdale Mustangs 7-4 in 13 innings... it was Union Heights (1-3) first win of the season and Stockdale's (0-4) fourth straight defeat.
