NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Tuesday, September 12th, 1950 For the entrants in this year's rookie draft, released today by the league, the possibilities are endless. Some will immediately seize their opportunity to play in the bigs with a venom, doggedly working their way up through the system to arrive on the pro circuit in three to five years, if they are lucky. Others will struggle, have their hopes dashed, reborn and dashed again, all the while not fully giving up on the dream. Still others will take each day as it comes, while not losing sight of the end-game. They will figure it out, quietly work their way into the professional ranks and have solid, if not spectacular careers in North American BaseBall League. At any rate, teams now can scout the draft pool for the next 30 days. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Bob Friend, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 2. Bob Nieman, 23 year-old right fielder out of college. 3. Bob Cerv, 24 year-old left fielder out of college. 4. Gil McDougald, 22 year-old third baseman out of college. 5. Bill Sarni, 22 year-old catcher out of college. 6. Clint Courtney, 23 year-old catcher out of college. 7. Frank Thomas, 21 year-old center fielder out of college. 8. Pete Runnels, 22 year-old shortstop out of college. 9. Irv Noren, 25 year-old center fielder out of college. 10. Mickey Mantle, 18 year-old center fielder out of high-school. Dodgers Report

NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed
Wednesday, September 12th, 1951 One of the few things certain about the 1951 first-year player draft is that it will be held 30 days from now. Today the NABL announced its list of players filing for the event, though little is publicly known about any given player, sending scouts from each of the league's clubs scattering to uncover what they can in as little time as possible. Some clubs will draft the ideal prospect late, while others will stake their futures to big-name prospects, those deemed most likely to succeed by the fickle, nameless consensus. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Harvey Kuenn, 20 year-old shortstop out of college. 2. Toby Atwell, 27 year-old catcher out of college. 3. Andy Carey, 19 year-old third baseman out of high-school. 4. Jim Rivera, 29 year-old center fielder out of college. 5. Harvey Haddix, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. Stu Miller, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Mickey Mantle, 19 year-old center fielder out of college. 8. Sandy Amoros, 21 year-old right fielder out of college. 9. NABL News: Playoffs begin Monday, October 1st, 1951 What began months ago as a dream is now reality. The trade deadline has passed, along with all the GMs' wheeling and dealing. Contract negotiations are on hold until another time. Front office work is all but on the back burner. Now it's time for each club, player, coach and manager to put a unique imprint on North American BaseBall League history. Nobody will remember the free agent who got away last winter. No one will care about the trade that fell through right before the deadline. People will remember just one thing about the playoffs -- the team that wins the North American Series crown. That's the reason they play the game. The North American Series starts today with these match-ups: Philadelphia Phillies versus Philadelphia Athletics.
