Papelbon Leaves First Start With Injury
Monday, April 7th, 2014: The
New York Heroes are hoping their plans haven't been further altered, as Jonathan Papelbon left his Opening Day start against the defending champion Sacramento Stingers
with elbow pain.

Papelbon, moved into the rotation after injuries to ScottSanderson and Jim McCormick, threw six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out five before leaving the Heroes
' 3-1 Opening Day victory.

The team has him listed as day-to-day.

Rusie Hurls 10-inning 2-hit Shutout Vs Boston
Monday, April 7th, 2014: Everything clicked on the hill today for
Amos Rusie of the Chicago Hitmen as he hurled his club to a complete game 10-inning 2-0 shutout win over the Boston Riders
, limiting them to 2 hits while recording 7 strikeouts and yielding no walks. He overpowered some batters with his fastball and buckled knees with his sharp breaking pitches.

Rusie went 13-13 with a 4.00 ERA for Chicago last season, topping 200 strikeouts but also topping 100 walks. The Riders
had nothing to offer on the day, the optimism of their inaugural 76-86 campaign stripped, for the moment at least.

Rusie outdueled Boston's Tommy John, who also went 10 innings but allowed RBI hits in the 10th to Pat Putnam and Pete Hill. Babe Ruth went 2-for-3 with a walk before being removed for a pinch runner.

Ted Trent Sidelined for One Week
Monday, April 7th, 2014:
San Antonio fans will be disappointed to learn that Ted Trent
suffered shoulder pain while throwing a pitch in today's game.

Trent's been diagnosed with mild tendinitis and could miss his next start. But the injury is not expected to sideline Trent for long. The two-time Southern League Outstanding Pitcher went 14-14 with 3.48 ERA in 2013 after making

Memphis Loses Charleston Until May
Tuesday, April 8th, 2014:
Memphis announced All-Star centerfielder Oscar Charleston
strained an oblique muscle reaching for a ball and will be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

The loss is obviously a rough one, as
Charleston
even in an off-year as he had in 2013 (.336-19-109), was top five in the Southern League Outstanding Hitter voting. Simply, he's been the PBL's best player since its inception in 2009. Now the defending Southern League champs must make due without him.

Expect
Dale Murphy
to see some extra playing time in the interim.

Rookie Speaker Goes 5-5 for Tides
Tuesday, April 8th, 2014: Rookie
Tris Speaker of the St. Louis Tides went on a hitting spree today against San Antonio
pitching, racking up 5 hits in 5 at-bats, but to no avail -- the Sheriffs put a damper on his day and prevailed 8-3 over the Tides.

T. Speaker
singled in the 1st, hit an RBI triple in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

"The hits were nice, but we're trying to win games here," Speaker said afterward. He'll be vital if the Tides are to step up their game after a 68-94 inaugural season.

Charlotte Loses 2B Dunlap
Wednesday, April 9th, 2014: The
Charlotte Cougars were informed today by team doctors that second baseman Fred Dunlap sustained an oblique strain in a recent game against the Wichita Brigade and will not play for 1-2 weeks. Dunlap
was hurt colliding with a player at a base.

The team did not say whether it will put Dunlap on the disabled list. For now, it appears they will see how he responds to treatment.

Louisville Loses Southworth Until After Break
Wednesday, April 9th, 2014: It was announced today in
Louisville that Racers center fielder Billy Southworth will be out for at least 3 months. Southworth suffered a partially torn labrum that occurred during a game against the Chicago Hitmen
.

The injury will cause slugger
John O'Rourke to move from designated hitter back out onto the field. Rookies Clyde Milan and Sherry Magee will share designated hitter duties for the moment.

New Orleans's Rich Harden Tears Tricep
Wednesday, April 9th, 2014: The injury bug has nailed
Rich Harden again. After making only 13 starts in 2013 thanks to separate stints for elbow and shoulder problems, Harden
is on the shelf again, this time with a torn tricep.

"What's there to say?" manager Walter Alston asked rhetorically. "It's unfortunate. He's a hell of a talent."

The tear is small, but big enough to sideline the 26-year-old righty. He went 6-3 with a 3.38 ERA last season.

First-round pick
Hippo Vaughn will take Harden
's slot in the rotation.

Riders Foster Dominates Stingers
Thursday, April 10th, 2014:
Rube Foster of the Boston Riders was one tough customer on the hill today. He blanked the Sacramento Stingers
5-0 on 5 hits, registering 6 strikeouts and 4 walks.

"When he's on, he's tough to hit," said the
Sacramento
manager after the game. "He's just a bulldog out there."

Chase Utley hit his second homer of the season, a two-run shot, and reigning Northern League Outstanding Hitter and Newcomer of the Year Buck Leonard drove in a pair as well for Boston
.

Sutcliffe Dominates Brigade in Shutout
Thursday, April 10th, 2014: It was a dismal game for the
Wichita Brigade with Rick Sutcliffe on the hill. The Charlotte starter was in top form and made it a long day for Wichita
with a 6-0 shutout. He surrendered a total of 5 hits and piled up 7 strikeouts to pick up the win in a complete game effort.

Oyster
Burns hit a 3-run homer to support Sutcliffe. Charlie Bennett and Bill Dahlen also drove in runs for Charlotte.

Rudy May Shuts Out New York
Friday, April 11th, 2014:
New York bats were ice cold today at Judges Ballpark. Boston's Rudy May
chilled them down with a 9-0 victory. In a fine outing, the 22-year-old hurler allowed 2 hits while striking out 4 and walking 3.

Pete Gillespie hit a 3-run double in the first inning and drove in four on the day for Boston, which continues to get excellent pitching in the season's opening week. Chase Utley and Harry Stovey each had three hits.

Pollet Too Tough, Blanks Wichita
Sunday, April 13th, 2014: It was a smooth and solid performance by
Howie Pollet of the Chicago Hitmen against Wichita
today. He crafted a fine 3-hitter in blanking them 3-0 and chalked up 2 strikeouts and no walks along the way.

"It certainly makes my job easy," said
Chicago
skipper Pat Moran. "When my pitcher pitches a shutout. I can just sit back, watch and enjoy."

Moran got three hits from rookie third baseman
Frank Baker, who's hitting .406 in the early going. Jose Cardenal, Milton Bradley and Pat Putnam drove in the runs for Chicago
.

Wichita
continues to struggle collectively at the plate, batting .246 as they've dropped six of their first seven.

Jenkins Hurls 1-hit Shutout Against New Orleans
Sunday, April 13th, 2014:
Fergie Jenkins was virtually untouchable, and managed to keep his 8 walks from doing him in. The St. Louis starter hurled a 4-0 shutout victory against New Orleans
, yielding 1 hit and striking out three.

"A complete-game shutout. That's fun territory for me," he told reporters in the postgame interview. "I was able to keep the ball down. I can't explain the walks, but in the end it didn't matter."

Ross Barnes
hit a 2-out double in the sixth to break up the no-hitter.

Rusty Staub had three hits for the Tides
.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Northern League Names Charlotte's Hall POW
Monday, April 14th, 2014:
George Hall is respected by most Charlotte Cougars
fans for his no-frills style of play. The 32-year-old left fielder went about his business with vigor last week to grab the Northern League Player of the Week honors.

He compiled a .409 average (9-22) with 3 home runs, 8 RBIs and 7 runs scored. In Sunday's game against Milwaukee, Hall went 4-for-4 with 2 homers, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored.

Horner Selected Top Performer in SL
Monday, April 14th, 2014:
Bob Horner is off to a rousing start after being given the third base job in New Orleans
. The 23-year-old third baseman of won Player of the Week honors, batting .423 with 11 hits in 26 at-bats, 4 home runs and 6 RBIs.

Horner takes over for Evan Longoria, whose rapid decline the past two seasons has seen him relegated to bench duty. The move to second base two years ago was obliterated by the emergence of Pete Rose last season. Now, Horner seems to have blocked him at third, at least for the near future.

Thanks. Basically, I'm taking the news events of the week but editing the game versions of the news stories to offer up a bit more information, such as offensive contributors in the pitching stories and vice versa. Glad you like it.

Hopefully Eddie will break out this year, is he playing? I was glad to see Cobb fall to LA.

Sandmen Lock Up Sanchez For 3 Years
Tuesday, April 15th, 2014: The Arizona Sandmen have agreed to a three-year deal with All-Star starter Anibal Sanchez, keeping the 27-year-old in an Arizona uniform for another 3 years.

Sanchez will earn $7,275,000 as part of the deal.

A 2012 All-Star, Sanchez is 64-51 with a 3.61 ERA for his career.

Boston's Al Spalding Humbles Philadelphia
Tuesday, April 15th, 2014: "He's got a bunch of different arm angles and his ball was really moving," said the Philadelphia manager after watching Al Spalding of the Boston Riders humiliate his club 12-0 in a fine 4-hit shutout.

"If I make good pitches, I'm going to get some outs," Spalding said after he befuddled the Ringers. "I was making good pitches the entire game."

He whiffed 4 and walked 3 in the complete game effort.

The performance continues the stirring start by Boston's starters, who have put up a league-best 2.63 ERA in the early going.

Spalding had plenty of help in this one, getting homers from Buck Leonard (1), Harry Stovey (2) and Chase Utley (3) in a 14-hit attack. Leonard, Stovey and Pete Gillespie each had two RBI, and Utley drove in 3.

Memphis' Dwyer Whitewashes Las Vegas
Tuesday, April 15th, 2014: He didn't put a spell on them. It wasn't black magic, it was just old-fashioned good pitching. That's how Frank Dwyer of the Memphis Strummers blanked the Las Vegas Bosses 1-0.

After tossing a complete-game 5-hit shutout, he was all smiles, saying, "I threw a lot of my pitches for strikes in this game. I mixed it up and tried keeping these guys off balance."

Memphis manager Harry Wright said, "He's at his best when he gets ahead of the hitters." That wasn't a problem today, as Dwyer walked 0 and struck out 11 in the victory.

Vegas manager Earl Weaver commented on their lack of success against him, saying, "He was throwing his breaking ball for strikes and we never capitalized on any of his mistakes. And the way Beckett pitched makes it extra frustrating. You can't blow a performance like that.

Bosses starter Josh Beckett threw 7 2/3 shutout innings, striking out 7 while allowing only 4 hits. But after reliever Scott Stewart got out of an 8th inning jam to keep the game scoreless, he got into trouble in the ninth, allowing a walk and two singles to load the bases before Dale Murphy's pinch-hit single to win it for the Strummers.

Tides Lose Browning For Season
Tuesday, April 15th, 2014: The St. Louis Tides announced this afternoon that right fielder Pete Browning would be out of action for the rest of the season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament playing the Alabama Airmen. Browning had hit a grand slam in the fifth inning, and was injured running the bases for an 8th inning double during a 6-5 win over Alabama.

Browning is batting .233 this season in 8 games with 1 home run, 11 RBIs and 1 run scored. He has 7 hits in 30 at-bats. He's a career .266 hitter with 59 homers and 327 RBI since being drafted in the PBL's inaugural draft by the Orlando Orcas. He was traded to St. Louis last season in exchange for reliever Doug Slaten.

Joey Gathright and Tommy Harper will get more ABs in Browning's absence, the second major injury blow for the Tides this season. They lost reliever Joe Sambito, presumably for the year, during spring training.

Rookie Zack Wheat Belts 5 Hits
Tuesday, April 15th, 2014: Zack Wheat told the press after his 5-hit day, "Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate. He wants to hit the ball hard."

Well, that's just what Wheat of the St. Louis Tides did against the Alabama Airmen. He went to the plate 5 times and 5 times he delivered base hits, much to the chagrin of the Airmen, who suffered a 6-5 defeat.

"Not much that I can say," offered Alabama manage Patsy Tebeau, "he just hammered the heck out of us."

Wheat singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and tripled in the 9th.

Wheat scored after that triple to break a 5-5 tie, scoring the winning win. The game was marred, though, by Pete Browning's injury, a torn ACL that will keep him out for the season.

"A loss like Pete kind of takes the joy out of a game like this," Wheat said. "It was a great win, but a tough loss at the same time."

This year Wheat is batting .394 with no home runs.

New Orleans Loses Thompson To 15-Day DL

Wednesday, April 16th, 2014: The New Orleans Knights will have to make do without Sam Thompson for 1-2 weeks. He suffered a mild hamstring strain while making a defensive play in the game today against the Los Angeles Idols. His teammates, understandably, were upset about losing the right fielder. "That's a tough break for him," one of them said. "But this team is resilient. We will just fill in until he gets back."

"I'll be back and ready to go as soon as I can," Thompson said. The team hasn't yet moved Thompson to the disabled list.

Thus far this season Thompson is hitting .281 with 2 home runs, 4 RBIs and 6 runs scored. He has 9 hits in 32 at-bats and has played in 9 games.

Flick Rocks Cougars for 3 HRs
Thursday, April 17th, 2014: Elmer Flick of the Indianapolis Engines had a lot to celebrate in today's 11-1 win over the Charlotte Cougars. Three times he celebrated by pounding the ball out of Sounders Ballpark.

He kiddingly told reporters after the game, "Hopefully, I can continue to close my eyes and swing as hard as I can. It worked well today."

The powerful Indianapolis right fielder tagged 3 hits in 3 at-bats, drove in 3 runs and scored 3 times in his three-home-run outburst.

Flick added, "Seriously, I just try to swing early and often to give myself a chance. I let the pitcher supply all the power, I just try to figure out how to get the bat on the ball."

"We talked about changing our strategy for the third one... and then he hit another homer," the Charlotte manager said. "We just couldn't get him out."

Flick hit a solo-shot off S. King in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off S. King in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off S. King in the 4th, walked in the 6th and walked in the 8th.

Flick is hitting .297 for the season with 3 home runs, 7 RBIs and 4 runs scored. He has 11 hits in 37 at-bats and played in 10 games. He's coming off a disappointing 2013 campaign in which he hit only .236.

"I wanted to get off to a good start this season," Flick said. "Now I just need to keep it up."

Delahanty Suffers Concussion
Thursday, April 17th, 2014: "I'm frustrated right now," said Alabama left fielder Ed Delahanty. "I can't help this team by sitting on the bench or in the training room." Unfortunately for the Airmen, that's where he will be out indefinitely. Delahanty suffered a concussion in today's game against St. Louis while making a defensive play. "Believe me," he said, "I won't be out a day longer than I have to be."

Alabama's Johnny Evers hit a slicing shot down the leftfield line with two out in the 6th inning. Delahanty crashed hard into the sidewall, making the catch but getting up slowly. Ted Strong came in to replace him, and it seemed clear he was rattled. But Delahanty was taken to the hospital and had what doctors termed "serious side effects" that make his stay on the disabled list a presumed long-term affair.

Delahanty is presently batting .265 with no home runs, 5 runs scored and 3 RBIs. His OBP is .286.

Prior Superb Against Oklahoma City
Friday, April 18th, 2014: Mark Prior hurled a three-hit shutout against Oklahoma City, striking out 9 and walking only two in a 1-0 victory.

"He was pure nasty out there today. I don't think any team in the league would've had a chance against what he was bringing," said Oklahoma City manager Ron Gardenhire during his postgame press conference. "He's one of the top four or five pitchers in the game, and this is why."

Prior was backed by an RBI single from Ross Barnes for the game's only run. The run was unearned, marring a stellar performance by Oklahoma City rookie Walter Johnson. Johnson fell to 0-2 with a 4.16 ERA, but was strong, allowing four hits and striking out 7 while going the distance, allowing only the one unearned run.

"That Johnson kid was impressive," New Orleans manager Walter Alston said. "He's gonna stick around a while."

Sheriffs' David Palmer Tosses Shutout
Saturday, April 19th, 2014: San Antonio pitcher David Palmer gave the Los Angeles Idols fits today as he blanked them 2-0 on 6 hits. He registered 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in the shutout.

Sheriffs manager Tommy LaSorda said, "When he's locating his pitches, he becomes unpredictable. He had Los Angeles guessing the entire game."

Ernie Whitt and Jim Gantner drove in the runs for San Antonio.

Buck Leonard Suffers Injury
Sunday, April 20th, 2014: Boston first baseman Buck Leonard has a strained hip muscle, suffered while running the bases. The Riders will put Leonard on the disabled list, but his recovery time isn't yet known.

This year Leonard , the reigning Northern League Outstanding Hitter is hitting .413 with 1 home run and 6 RBIs in 13 games played. He also boasts a spectacular OBP of .517 with 11 walks and 11 runs scored.

Boston's gotten off to a strong start behind its pitching, but Leonard is the heart of its offense. Harry Stovey will come in from the outfield to play first while Leonard is on the shelf, meaning some more playing time for utility man Bill Hall, who will patrol the outfield.

Sabathia Fires Shutout in Airmen Victory
Sunday, April 20th, 2014: At The Air Field today Orlando dropped a 2-0 decision to C.C. Sabathia and the Alabama Airmen. The Orcas offered little resistance to Sabathia, who stopped them on 5 hits, fanned 4 and walked 1.

It's taken longer than they expected when they took him in the inaugural draft back in 2009, but it looks like CC Sabathia has finally found his way. He posted a 3.07 ERA last season and, after three years of shuffling between the bullpen and the rotation, Sabathia looks like he's entrenched in the rotation for good.

"I feel good and I feel strong," Sabathia said. "I'm getting my opportunity now and I'm going to make the most of it."

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Hughie Jennings Northern League POW
Monday, April 21st, 2014: The defending champion Sacramento Stingers have stumbled out of the gate to a 3-10 mark, but had a bright spot this week. Hughie Jennings earned Northern League Player of the Week honors, batting .588 (10-for-17) with no homers and 3 RBI.

"Just seeing the ball real well right now," the shortstop said. "I hope I can keep it up and help get us out of this rut we're in right now."

A lifetime .238 hitter, Jennings is in the lineup for his glove, not his bat. But perhaps his getting his bat going, even for a brief spell, will be a good omen for the Stingers.

Southern League Names Cobb POW
Monday, April 21st, 2014: Considered by many the best player available in the Amateur Draft in November, Ty Cobb came into the PBL with great expectations. Thus far, he hasn't disappointed.

The Los Angeles Idols star earned Southern League Player of the Week honors, batting .536 on the week (15-for-28) with no homers and 4 RBI.

"See the ball, hit the ball," Cobb said. "I just try to keep it simple."

So far, the 19-year-old Cobb is hitting .429 with no homers and 8 RBI. He's also stolen 4 bases and scored 9 runs in 13 games.

"The kid is dynamic, there's no question about that," manager Charlie Manuel said. "We've thrown him right into the fire and he's performing great."

Los Angeles has apparently become where first basemen go to die. Fred Tenney still holds down the job, despite an off season in 2013. They also drafted Negro League stars Luke Easter and Tank Carr this season (though Carr is also an outfielder). That happened with Murray AND Willie Aikens sitting on the reserve squad, not to mention Tony Perez, who plays first and third.

For now, Eddie's stuck on the reserve squad. His best hope is trade or injury at this point. He's hit .291 in parts of two years with the big club, but has never gotten an everyday shot. He's only 24, so he has time.

Wichita Loses Cleon Jones To DL
Monday, April 21st, 2014: Cleon Jones and the Wichita Brigade got a bad break in today's game against the Racers as the team confirmed has suffered an oblique strain and will be placed on the 15-day disabled list. The Brigade left fielder suffered the injury making a defensive play on a ball hit by Clyde Milan in a 4-2 defeat as Wichita continues to struggle in the early going.

In the 2014 season Jones is hitting .250 with 1 home run

Top Prospect Williams Ruptures Tendon
Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014: As if the Milwaukee Bangers aren't having a tough enough time, baseball's top prospect, Smokey Joe Williams, left today's game with a ruptured tendon in his index finger. The injury is expected to keep Williams on the shelf until after the All-Star Break, and perhaps until August.

Williams had a rough start to his rookie campaign last year but had a great August, going 5-1 with a 2.09 ERA before the year's workload seemed to wear him down in September. This year, he's been spotty, going 1-3 with a 5.25 ERA. He had thrown a complete game in a 4-1 win over Wichita in his last start.

Warren Spahn will get yet another chance to reach his high potential, as he joins the rotation in Williams' place.

Saints' Prior Continues Great Start
Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014: Mark Prior of the New Orleans Knights worked his mound magic yet again, this time against the San Antonio Sheriffs. He blanked them 1-0 on 5 hits, registering 9 strikeouts and 1 walk.

"Making good pitches is the name of the game and I made some good ones in this one," said Prior after the game.

"He's the best in the game right now," New Orleans manager Walter Alston said. "He's making so few mistakes each game you really need to be locked in to get to him."

Prior is 2-1 with a 0.33 ERA so far this season. The two-time All-Star has finished in the Top 3 for Southern League Outstanding Pitcher three times, and could well be on his way to winning the award for the first time.

Orlando's Javery Dominates St. Louis
Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014: Behind the strong pitching of Al Javery, Orlando shut out St. Louis 12-0. Javery surrendered only 3 hits in recording the complete-game victory. He registered 3 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Javery is 2-0 with a 1.83 ERA.

"At some point, this kid's going to get recognition for just how good he is," Orlando manager Eddie Dyer said of the 25-year-old righty, who has posted sub-3 ERAs in each of the past two seasons.

Wichita Places Roger Repoz On DL
Saturday, April 26th, 2014: The Wichita Brigade are playing badly enough they didn't need more bad news. Nonetheless, they were informed today by team doctors that right fielder Roger Repoz sustained a severe hamstring strain in a recent game against the Philadelphia Ringers and will not play for 4 weeks. Repoz was hurt running the bases.

Repoz was a surprise as an undrafted free agent last season. Signed by Wichita, he went on to hit .276 with 23 homers and 77 RBI. This season Repoz is batting .235 with no home runs. His totals include 4 RBIs and 6 runs scored.

Eric Byrnes was activated from the reserve squad and will replace Repoz, at least to start with.

Philadelphia's Stivetts Tears Rotator
Sunday, April 27th, 2014: Philadelphia reliever Jack Stivetts left today's game and has been diagnosed with a severe tear of the rotator cuff. Stivetts will have surgery within the week, but Ringers officials said it is unlikely he will pitch again until next season.

The loss is a significant one for Philadelphia, which is off to a 7-12 start. Stivetts had been the one steady force in an otherwise spotty bullpen. Stivetts made two starts to open the year, and won both, allowing 2 runs over 17 1/3 innings. But the Ringers moved him into the pen anyway, thinking they could use him in more games and were in better shape in the rotation than in the pen. Overall, in 24 innings, he has permitted 13 hits, fanned 12 hitters and gone 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA.

Asked whether the move from starter to reliever had anything to do with the injury, manager Ned Hanlon bristled.

"Guys do it all the time," he responded sharply. "This isn't a blame situation. It's just something unfortunate that we need to deal with."

Jason Jennings has been activated from the reserve squad and will join the Philadelphia bullpen.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Charlotte's Bennett Named Northern League POW
Monday, April 28th, 2014: Charlotte catcher Charlie Bennett was named Northern League Player of the Week, going 10-for-17 (.588) with a homer and 2 RBI.

This year Bennett is batting .288 with 4 home runs and 12 RBI for the Cougars, who presently sit a game back of division-leading New York. Bennett is the latest of traditionally weak hitters earning player of the week honors, as Hughie Jennings did last week. Bennett is a career .234 hitter.

Arizona Rookie Zimmerman Southern League POW
Monday, April 28th, 2014: Heinie Zimmerman burst onto the Southern League stage in a big way last week. This promising rookie third baseman for Arizona hit .478 with 3 homers and 5 RBI to earn Player of the Week honors.

The 21-year-old went 11 for 23, and is another member of a rookie class of hitters just tearing the cover off the baseball in the 2014 season's opening weeks. Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Zack Wheat and Frank Baker have all started their careers with a bang, topping .350 in the early going. Joe Jackson of Louisville has been solid as well, batting .288 so far.

Thus far this season in 12 games Zimmerman is batting .357 with 3 home runs, 6 RBIs and 10 runs scored. He has 20 hits in 56 at-bats.

Rookie Frank Baker's Streak Hits 20
Wednesday, April 30th, 2014: His nickname is "Home Run" but Chicago Hitmen rookie Frank Baker may soon be known as "Hit Machine" if he keeps this up. The young third baseman ripped three hits today in a 5-4 loss to Los Angeles to extend his hitting streak to 20 games.

"Things went well for me today. But we didn't win the game. And baseball is not about personal accomplishments, it's about winning," Baker said after the game.

Baker is hitting .412 this season with 2 homers, 14 RBI and 12 runs scored for the Northern League West-leading Hitmen.

Scorpions Steve Carlton Hurt
Wednesday, April 30th, 2014: Disappointment reigns in Oklahoma City where a poor start has been compounded by the announcement that pitcher Steve Carlton suffered a torn tricep during today's game.

Carlton, the Scorpions' first-ever draft choice, had a strong first season, going 9-13 with a 3.65 ERA before a torn labrum ended his season. The team doctor said he does not believe the latest in jury is related, as Carlton was throwing well in the spring and early going this season. Currently Carlton has is 1-2 in 5 starts with a 3.62 ERA. He also has 19 strikeouts in 32.1 innings.

He's expected to miss roughly three months. Johnny Lindell will take his spot in the rotation.

Chicago's Sanders Shuts Out Idols
Thursday, May 1st, 2014: The Chicago Hitmen's strong start has been buoyed by its stellar pitching. Look no further than Ben Sanders, who hurled a complete-game 5-hit shutout against Los Angeles, striking out three in a 5-0 Chicago victory.

A two-time Southern League Outstanding Pitcher winner, Sanders was acquired last season in the trade that sent Josh Hamilton to Arizona. But Sanders went down for the season in his second start with the Hitmen, and their late-season slide soon followed.

"This is why we got him," manager Bill McKechnie said. "Last season didn't work out because of the injury, but we knew the talent we were picking up. Just look at the back of his baseball card. It says more than I ever could."

This season Sanders has compiled a 4-1 record with a 2.66 ERA in 5 starts.

Incredibly, that 2.66 ERA is only fourth best in Chicago's league-topping rotation. Hitmen starters have a combined 2.61 ERA, with Howie Pollet, Johan Santana and Amos Rusie leading the charge.

"They are going to be a tough staff to overcome," Los Angeles manager Charlie Manuel said after watching Sanders. "Four great arms all throwing well."

Baker Goes Hitless, Streak Stopped at 20
Thursday, May 1st, 2014: His run was over, but a Chicago victory took some of the disappointment out of Frank Baker losing his 20-game hitting streak. The 23-year-old third baseman did not get a hit in 4 at-bats, but the Hitmen whipped the Los Angeles Idols 5-0 today at MGM Field behind Ben Sanders' great effort.

For the year Baker is hitting .393 with 2 home runs. His stats include 14 runs batted in and 12 runs scored.

Cuppy Zeroes in on New York
Friday, May 2nd, 2014: The Louisville Racers shut out the New York Heroes behind the 2-hit pitching of Nig Cuppy, winning by the score of 3-0 at Judges Ballpark.

Up to now Cuppy has recorded a record of 2-2. In 5 starts he has fanned 11 batters in 41 innings with a 3.73 ERA.

Cuppy was backed by RBIs from Gene Richards, Dan Brouthers and Sherry Magee

Hitmen Lose Bobby Jenks For Season
Saturday, May 3rd, 2014: The Chicago Hitmen were dealt a severe blow when Bobby Jenks was hurt throwing a pitch recently in a game against the Wichita Brigade. Today doctors confirmed it, ruling the 29-year-old reliever out for the rest of the season with a torn flexor tendon in his elbow. They indicated it would take at least a year before Jenks would be able to return.

A two-time All-Star, Jenks has 1 save in 7 relief appearances and had yet to allow a run this season.

The Hitmen activated Billy McCool from the reserve squad to take Jenks' spot on the roster. The 21-year-old lefty went 2-1 with two saves and a 3.12 ERA in 16 appearances last season.

Bad News for Strummers, Johnson Injured
Saturday, May 3rd, 2014: Nick Johnson expressed his disappointment when he learned that an elbow sprain would sideline him for one week. "I'll just spend a lot of time in the training room and hopefully speed up the healing process. Nobody likes to be out of the line-up," explained Johnson. The first baseman got hurt in today's game with the Los Angeles Idols. He was hurt colliding with a player at a base. Team officials had no comment on his roster replacement.

For the year Johnson is batting .316 with 30 hits and 5 home runs. He has scored 16 times and driven in 17.

Cougars Keep Sheets From Free Agency
Sunday, May 4th, 2014: Fans hailed the signing of Ben Sheets today as the Charlotte Cougars starting pitcher came to terms with the club.

Set to make $10,245,000 over the following 3 years, Sheets will no longer test the free agent market after the season.

"I've been a Cougar since the beginning," Sheets said. "I think we have something brewing here and I look forward to being a part of it."

So far this season Sheets has 3 wins and 3 losses and a 3.45 ERA. For his career, the 2013 Southern League Outstanding Pitcher winner is 53-46 with a 3.69 ERA.

Crushing Blow As Saints Lose Prior For Year
Sunday, May 4th, 2014: He was off to a start of what could have been the best season by a starter in PBL history. Now, Mark Prior won't take a mound again until 2015.

Earlier today, New Orleans Prior had to leave the game against Orlando because of an injury. Team officials are reporting that he has a stretched elbow ligament that will keep him out for the rest of the season. Prior likely won't begin throwing again until early 2015.

Prior was unavailable for comment, but his New Orleans teammates said plenty.

"Devastating," shortstop Ross Barnes said. "He was looking special this season. Real special."

Slugger Sam Thompson, just back from his own injury, couldn't believe it. "Prior's been a horse for us since the beginning. And he keeps getting better. We just have to keep going, though, because the season doesn't stop for us to feel sorry for ourselves.

This season Prior has fanned 33 in 41.2 innings and collected a 3-1 record with a 0.65 ERA.

Mike LaCoss has been activated from the reserve squad to take Prior's place.

Idols Lose Strang For Season
Sunday, May 4th, 2014: There haven't been many day-to-day injuries in the PBL's first month this season. Unfortunately, there have been an inordinate number of severe injuries.

The latest occured for the Los Angeles Idols, who were informed today by team doctors that second baseman Sammy Strang sustained a broken kneecap in a recent game against the Memphis Strummers and will not play for 5-6 months. Strang was hurt running the bases.

"What are ya gonna do," manager Charlie Manuel asked rhetorically. "We've been hit hard so far. That's three."

Manuel is alluding to Mike Donlin, who is already out for the year with a torn PCL; and shortstop Vern Stephens, out another six weeks or so with a herniated disc.

Strang was struggling in the early going, batting .186 with 1 home run, 7 RBIs and 20 runs scored. He has 16 hits in 86 at-bats.

Tony Perez was recalled from the reserve squad. Heinie Groh will take over at second base, shifting over from third. Miguel Cabrera will get regular time at third in the hopes he can finally reach his potential.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Louisville's Richards Northern League POW
Monday, May 5th, 2014: Louisville Racers leftfielder Gene Richards was named Northern League Player of the Week.

Richards piled up 13 hits in 31 at-bats, 1 home run and 5 RBIs while hitting .419.

"Just trying to spark somethin' here," Richards said. "We're right there, and even though it's early, a good run would make everyone have to chase us." Louisville currently sits two games back of perennial division-leader New York.

Richards is batting .284 with 2 home runs and 10 RBIs this season.

Memphis SS Trammell Named SL's POW
Monday, May 5th, 2014:
Alan Trammell
is making the most of his starting opportunity in Memphis, earning Southern League Player of the Week Award honors while he tries to stabilize a Memphis offense hurt by the injury bug.

The
Memphis
shortstop wreaked havoc on opposing pitchers last week, pounding them for a .480 average (12-25) with 3 home runs and 10 RBIs on his way to claiming the honor.

"We're just trying to hold it together here until Oscar [Charleston] and Nick [Johnson] get back," Trammell said. The loss of the two offensive forces meant Memphis had to shake things up a bit: Ty Wigginton moved from third to first to bring Otto Krueger's power bat into the lineup. Rance Mulliniks slid over to second to get Trammell into the mix.

It's not the start they hoped for, but the reigning division champs are only four games out and expect to get Charleston back within the week. Johnson remains out with an elbow injury, but should be ready in about two weeks.

In this current campaign
Trammell is hitting .341 with 3 home runs and 10 RBIs.

Northern League Names Rookie of Month
Thursday, May 1st, 2014:
Frank Baker
was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 23-year-old third baseman definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen April's Northern League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

Wow, I missed it somewhere along the line, but Matt Holliday retired.

He retired sometime during 2013, last having played in 2012. He still shows up as a 4-star player.

Holliday's career numbers:

Career Batting Stats
Year/Team/League Age G AB H 2B 3B HR RBI R BB HP SF K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS VORP

Definitely the best player to retire so far...or at least the best PBL player.

Oklahoma City Helpless Against Harang
Tuesday, May 6th, 2014: In an impressive mound performance,
Aaron Harang of the Orlando Orcas topped the Oklahoma City Scorpions
on a 3-hitter and held them scoreless.

"He was getting ahead of us and keeping the ball off the plate," said
Oklahoma City manager Ron Gardenhire. "Harang
kept us confused the whole game."

The
Orlando
hurler rang up 5 strikeouts and issued 2 walks in his 4-0 shutout victory.

Harang was backed by a two-run double from Walton Cruise and RBIs from Honus Wagner and Jim Northrup
.

Harang has made 6 starts so far this year and put up a 3-2 won-lost record with a 2.09 ERA. In 47.1 innings he has allowed 30 hits, walked 10 and struck out 45.

San Antonio Loses Rafael Furcal
Wednesday, May 7th, 2014: "I'm frustrated right now," said
San Antonio shortstop Rafael Furcal. "I can't help this team by sitting on the bench or in the training room." Unfortunately for the Sheriffs, that's where he will be spending the next six weeks or so. Furcal suffered a fractured thumb in today's game against St. Louis, landing awkwardly after being taken out by the Tides' Pete Suder
while trying to turn a double play.

In 26 games
Furcal is hitting .225 this season with 20 hits, 1 home run, 12 RBIs, 15 walks, a .336 OBP and 13 runs scored.

LaCoss Brilliant In Replacing Prior
Wednesday, May 7th, 2014: It was like
Mark Prior
wasn't even hurt.

Fans at MGM Field witnessed the
Knights blank the Idols behind a superb effort by Mike LaCoss, brought up from the New Orleans Knights' reserve squad to make the first start in Mark Prior's slot after the star righthander went down for the season last week. LaCoss
allowed 4 hits in recording the shutout.

"I can't be Mark, but I am confident in my ability,"
LaCoss
said afterward. "I've got a great team around me, so I just need to go out and execute my pitches, and that's what I did today."

LaCoss was backed by four hits from Ross Barnes, and RBIs from Barnes, Sam Thompson and Prince Fielder in the Knights
' 3-0 win.

Stingers Lock Up Bob Shawkey
Thursday, May 8th, 2014: Happy times in
Sacramento as the Stingers and star starting pitcher Bob Shawkey
put the finishing touches on a $5,197,500 contract extension that will keep the 26-year-old in town through 2017.

Shawkey
went 18-7 with a 3.17 ERA last season after consecutive seasons of 4.61 ERAs. He threw a no-hitter against Chicago last September.

"I play for the defending champions," Shawkey said. "Why would I want to go anywhere else?"

So far this season, Shawkey is 2-2 with a 4.38 ERA.

Bender Superb Against New York
Friday, May 9th, 2014:
Boston's Chief Bender put a hex on New York
in a sparkling 3-0 shutout performance, mesmerizing them on a 5-hit gem.

"I feel good physically," he said. "Everything's comfortable. You should pitch well when that's the case."

It was anything but comfortable for
New York
.

"
Bender used his changeup very well, very effectively," New York
manager Bill McKechnie said. "He threw it in hitter's counts."

The
Boston Riders hurler fanned 1 and walked 1, and was backed by RBIs from Reggie Abercrombie, Harry Stovey and Dan Uggla
.

So far this year
Bender has a 4-3 record with a 2.88 ERA.

Singer Shuts Out Struggling Oklahoma City
Friday, May 9th, 2014:
Bill Singer of the San Antonio Sheriffs shut out the Oklahoma City Scorpions 1-0, stopping them on 4 hits. Singer struck out five and walked none in a superb outing, as Oklahoma City's offensive woes continued. RyanBraun drove in the only run for San Antonio off Ken Holtzman
, who dropped to 1-4 despite a stellar 2.54 ERA.

The
Scorpions are batting .248 as a team and are scoring just a tick over four runs a game. They have dropped 6 of 7 this month, scoring 14 runs in their one win over Las Vegas
. They've scored 11 runs in their six losses, being shut out twice.

"We need to get something going here,"
Scorpions
manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Our pitching is keeping us in it, but we've got to get something going at the plate."

Singer
, however, made that difficult.

After the game skipper Bobby Cox said, "He just came out and was on the attack from the first pitch he threw. When Bill stays ahead in the count, he does well. That's the key."

So far this season
Singer has a 3-2 record with a 2.05 ERA.

Haren Outduels McLain as Alabama Tops Orlando 1-0
Saturday, May 10th, 2014: It was a razor-sharp performance by
Danny Haren of the Alabama Airmen against the Orlando Orcas. He fashioned a fine 4-hitter in blanking them 1-0. Haren struck out 6 and walked only one in outdueling Denny McLain
(1-2, 2.44).

Jimmy Rollins drove in Larry Stahl
with a third-inning single for the game's only run.

In 7 starts this season
Haren has compiled a 3-0 record and a 2.60 ERA.

Charleston Hurt In FIrst Game Back
Sunday, May 11th, 2014: He missed a month. He returned for three at bats.

Memphis lost Oscar Charleston to the disabled list again, this time with a hamstring strain, as Charleston left after chasing down a Chad Tracy
flyball to the gap.

"It just popped a bit,"
Charleston
said after the game. "I'm furious, but I'd rather miss two weeks than push it and miss two months."

Memphis treaded water for April while being without Charleston, going 14-17 and staying in the hunt. But with Nick Johnson injured, Memphis
is living dangerously.

Monday, May 12th, 2014:

Benz Done For Year As Stingers' Woes Mount
Monday, May 12th, 2014: Anyone wondering what happened to Sacramento's Joe Benz this season may have gotten their answer in devastating fashion today, as the struggling righthander was diagnosed with a torn tendon in his elbow that will require surgery, ending his season.

Benz, who went 17-7 with a 3.04 ERA last season for the world champions, went 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in seven starts this year.

"Joe's velocity was down, but he wasn't complaining of any pain," Sacramento manager Bobby Cox said. "I guess it was just building."

The loss of Benz only exacerbates the struggles so far for the Stingers, who now have six players on the disabled list with the news outfielders Al Zarilla and Roy White will be put on the shelf. Zarilla is out with a bicep strain. Zarilla is batting at a .286 clip with 3 home runs and 19 RBIs. He has played in 31 games and scored 15 times.

White, meanwhile, has a strained rib cage muscle. He's been coming off the bench this season, batting .233 this year with 1 home run, 5 RBIs and 5 runs scored. He has 10 hits in 43 at-bats.

Adding to the injury woes is the struggle of Justin Morneau, who has gotten off to a .197 start, with 3 homers and 16 RBI. Morneau is well aware the team needs him to get it going before falling completely out of it, as the Chicago Hitmen continue to roll. The Stingers sit 12 games back.

"I'm not getting it done," Morneau said matter-of-factly. "And that needs to change."

Tides' Sothoron Shackles Boston
Monday, May 12th, 2014: Allen Sothoron of the St. Louis Tides was lights out in a 6-hit whitewash of the Boston Riders.

He told BNN reporters, "I had my good stuff and it went where I wanted it to go."

He registered 5 strikeouts and 1 walk in shutting out Boston 4-0.

Sothoron was taken by the Tides in the first round of the expansion draft before the 2013 season. The move shocked many, but Sothoron was a rare bright spot for St. Louis last season, going 11-11 with 2 saves and a 3.26 ERA.

This year Sothoron has made 7 starts, thrown 51.1 innings, fanned 24 batters and walked 25. His won-lost record is 5-2 with a 2.10 ERA.

Boston got a pair of RBI from Pete Suder and RBIs from Doggie Miller and Denis Menke. Zack Wheat added three hits for the Tides.

Singer Hurls Second Straight Shutout
Wednesday, May 14th, 2014: San Antonio's Bill Singer is rolling right now, hurling his second straight shutout. This time, his prey was the Sacramento Stingers. He racked up 7 strikeouts, surrendered 4 hits and issued 3 walks on his way to the 7-0 victory.

"Just hitting my spots," Singer said afterward. "No magic. The guys gave me some early runs and that made it much easier."

The Stingers mauled Sacramento starter Carlos Marmol for 7 runs over 2 1/3 innings. Adam Dunn hit a two-run homer in the first. Buck O'Neil also drove in a pair and Jason Tyner and Gabe Gross each added RBIs.

On the season Singer has compiled a 4-2 mark with a 1.77 ERA in 8 starts. In pitching 66 innings he has 45 strikeouts and 13 walks while limiting the opposition to a .227 batting average.

Marmol, part of a team-wide struggle for defending champ Sacramento, fell to 2-5 with a 4.64 ERA.

Hitmen Lose Amos Rusie
Thursday, May 15th, 2014: It's been a smooth start for the Chicago Hitmen. Now, they've lost their ace.

Amos Rusie is headed to the disabled list, and indications seem to be it will be longer rather shorter time spent on the shelf.

"He's got some shoulder issues going on," manager Bill McKechnie said. "He was willing to pitch through it, but we decided we'd rather try to get him right and get him back for the stretch drive. Now we just have to keep playing well enough for those games to matter."

The Hitmen are playing .700 ball, and their stellar pitching has been a tremendous part of that. Rusie is 4-2 with a 2.15 ERA to lead the way.

Len Barker will reportedly take Rusie's turn in the rotation, a move that potentially won't sit well with Cy Young, who remains in the bullpen.

Barker is 1-0 with a save and a 1.50 ERA so far this season. Young is 3-2 with a 4.16 ERA.

Dwyer Spins Shutout Against Sheriffs
Friday, May 16th, 2014: Frank Dwyer was stingy with runs in his latest outing against the Sheriffs. He shut them out 3-0 on 5 hits with 1 strikeout and 1 walk.

Memphis Harry Wright said, "Frank was very aggressive tonight. He threw everything he had with a lot of confidence."

The losing manager had praise, too. "He was throwing strikes with all his pitches and mixing it up well," Tommy LaSorda said. "Dwyer has a sneaky fastball, and whatever that offspeed pitch was, it was keeping our timing off."

This season Dwyer has compiled a 4-2 mark with a 2.98 ERA in 8 starts.

Wichita's Repoz Suffers Rehab Setback
Saturday, May 17th, 2014: The Wichita Brigade were hoping to have outfielder Roger Repoz back this week. That won't happen.

The team announced today that Repoz will miss an additional 2-3 weeks after suffering a setback in his rehabilitation from a hamstring strain. While the setback is believed to be minor, the Brigade want Repoz to take his time and fully recover before coming back.

Repoz on the season is hitting .235 with no home runs. His stats include 4 RBIs and 6 runs scored. He hit 17 homers for Wichita last season after being picked up off the scrap heap as an undrafted free agent.

Dick Allen Smacks 5 Hits for Bosses
Saturday, May 17th, 2014: The Bosses tripped up the Scorpions 13-1 today, led by Dick Allen, their 23-year-old third baseman. He tagged Oklahoma City pitching for 5 hits, making life miserable for them the entire game.

Allen singled in the 1st, walked in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, singled in the 6th, hit a two-run home run off Dave Rozema in the 8th and singled in the 9th.

So far this season, Allen has recorded a .348 batting average with 49 hits, 5 home runs, 27 RBIs, 19 runs scored and a .416 OBP.

"We knew this kid was a beast," manager Earl Weaver said. The Bosses drafted Allen in the first round of the 2012 draft and, after a slow start in his rookie year last season, Allen got hot and ended up hitting .259 with 19 homers and 73 RBI despite missing six weeks with a broken thumb.

The five-hit effort comes four days after Allen hit a pair of homers, driving in six as Vegas beat Chicago 7-5.

Byrd Shuts Out Boston as Connor Hits Walkoff
Sunday, May 18th, 2014: Bill Byrd of the New York Heroes shut out Boston over nine innings and was spared from having to do it a 10th when Roger Connor slammed a 2-run walkoff homer off Boston's Tommy John to lift the Heroes to a 2-0 victory. Byrd stopped them on 2 hits, striking out 3 and walking 2.

"We're always thankful for Roger, but I was particularly glad to have him today," Byrd said with a smile afterward. "Tommy pitched great, so it was a fun battle. Roger just got a hold of one."

For the year Byrd has a 5-1 record with a 2.48 ERA in 8 starts.

The loss was yet another frustrating one for John, who fell to 2-6 despite a respectable 3.75 ERA.

"I don't care about my record," John said. "But we have to win games like this."
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Engines' Beckley Named Northern League POW
Monday, May 19th, 2014: The hard-working and hard-playing Jake Beckley was rewarded with the Northern League Player of the Week honors.

The perennial .300 hitting Indianapolis Engines first baseman hit .394 while collecting 13 hits in 33 at-bats, 3 home runs and 10 RBIs.

For the season Beckley is batting .323 with 52 hits and 9 home runs. He has scored 26 times and driven in 30.

Vegas 3B Dick Allen Southern League POW
Monday, May 19th, 2014: There may be no player in the PBL with more potential than Dick Allen. The Las Vegas Bosses 23-year-old third baseman, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for Southern League Player of the Week honors.

He ripped 16 hits in 26 at-bats, compiling a .615 average with 3 home runs and 14 RBIs, a week that included a 2-homer, 6 RBI effort against Chicago and a 5-hit performance against Oklahoma City.

This year Allen is batting .342 with 50 hits, 5 home runs, 27 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

Finally I'm all caught up! I missed quite a bit while I was gone, but good stuff and I'm enjoying it. Glad to see the Hitmen on top this season, although I'm puzzled by the trades they made last year... Anyway, keep up the good work!

Yeah, the trade barrage was baffling...and if Ben Sanders hadn't gotten hurt, they probably win the division.

Thanks. Good to have you back aboard.

McCormick Rips St. Louis for 5 Hits
Tuesday, May 20th, 2014: It was a magical day at the plate for Scorpions rookie Moose McCormick. The 24-year-old left fielder helped lift Oklahoma City to a 6-2 win over the St. Louis Tides today at Scorpions Ballpark. McCormick smacked 5 hits in 5 at-bats to spark his club to victory.

"We're just trying to get something going," McCormick said after the game. "It's been a rough start."

The Scorpions lost six in a row earlier this month, won one, then dropped five straight.

"Expansion was last year's excuse," McCormick said. "Now it's time to do something."

McCormick singled in the 1st, hit a two-run single in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

In his season totals, McCormick has 2 home runs, .315 BA, .342 OBP, 17 RBIs and 19 runs scored. He has played in 37 games.

Veale Whitewashes Philadelphia
Wednesday, May 21st, 2014: Sacramento's Bob Veale hurled a 5-hit 7-0 shutout in a fine performance against Philadelphia, surrendering 2 walks and putting up 3 strikeouts.

"Bob is good at getting out of jams," manager Bobby Cox said. "He's almost more effective when he gets guys on-base or gets behind in the count, because he uses your aggressiveness against you."

Sacramento got three hits apiece from Brian McCann and Garrett Atkins, and 2 RBI from Manny Mota in the victory.

This season Veale has a 5-2 record with a 3.69 ERA in 9 starts, a rare bright spot in what's been a terrible start for Sacramento.

Leonard Sizzles, Los Angeles Fizzles
Friday, May 23rd, 2014: Dutch Leonard really wowed everybody at the ballpark with his 5-0 shutout victory over Los Angeles today. The Arizona pitcher mystified the Idols in a strong performance. He gave up 5 hits and totaled no walks and 5 strikeouts.

Manager Dick Howser was impressed. "Dutch had them chasing a lot of pitches and talking to themselves. It was something special to watch."

Currently Leonard has a 7-2 won-lost record in 9 starts with a 2.19 ERA. He also has 44 strikeouts in 74 innings.

Drafted in 2009, Leonard debuted in 2010 and put up a 6.69 ERA. He was banished to the reserve squad for two years before re-appearing last season as a new pitcher. He went 9-3 with a 2.99 ERA in 16 starts, and is leading the Sandmen's resurgence this season.

Charleston's Return For Memphis Delayed
Saturday, May 24th, 2014: The Memphis Strummers received some bad news when the team's medical staff announced that Oscar Charleston, due back today, will need another week. Charleston, who is currently out with a mild hamstring strain, was evaluated by doctors yesterday and tests showed that the injury was not healing as quickly as they expected.

The team hopes Charleston will return when they head to Orlando at the end of next week.

Boston Puts Stovey On DL
Saturday, May 24th, 2014: The Boston Riders were informed today by team doctors that left fielder Harry Stovey sustained a mild shoulder strain in a recent game against the Sacramento Stingers and will not play for 2 weeks.

This season Stovey is batting .192 with 32 hits and 6 home runs. He has scored 19 times and has 19 runs batted in.

Stovey's six homers lead a struggling Boston offense that his hit only 37 this season, next to last in the Northern League. Rick Reichardt figures to get some more ABs in Stovey's absence.

Rhines Holds Arizona Scoreless
Saturday, May 24th, 2014: If the Los Angeles Idols are going to mount a comeback, they are going to need to pitch. Billy Rhines showed them what to do, halting the Arizona Sandmen with a 3-0 shutout. Rhines surrendered a total of 5 hits and piled up 5 strikeouts to pick up the win in a route-going effort.

This year Rhines has compiled a 5-5 record with a 4.20 ERA in 10 starts. A 17-game winner two years ago, Rhines lost 20 games last season in a disasterous year for the Idols.

Richardson Bangs Out 5 Base Hits
Sunday, May 25th, 2014: Hardy
Richardson singled in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, grounded out in the 6th, singled in the 8th and singled in the 11th.

Still, Louisville fell on a 12th inning walkoff homer from John Beckwith. The Racers blew leads of 6-0 and 7-2 in the game.

To date Richardson has chalked up a .323 average with 8 home runs, driven in 19 runs and scored 24 times.

Gene Richards had four hits for Louisville in the loss, in which they doubled up Charlotte in hits 20 to 10. George Hall homered and drove in 3, drawing three walks in the win for Charlotte.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Engines Flick Swings Hot Bat, NL Winner
Monday, May 26th, 2014: Indianapolis right fielder Elmer Flick put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .476 batting average. For his efforts Flick collected the Northern League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 10 hits in 21 at-bats, 2 home runs and 10 RBIs last week in 6 games.

For the year Flick is batting .329 with 7 home runs, 27 RBIs and 32 runs scored.

Stargell Named Southern League POW
Monday, May 26th, 2014: Suffering the losses of Oscar Charleston and Nick Johnson, the Memphis Strummers have been desperate for offense. Willie Stargell has answered the call, and was today honored as the Southern League Player of the Week.

The 24-year-old Memphis Strummers left fielder hit at a torrid .500 clip as he collected 11 hits in 22 at-bats, 1 home run, 4 RBIs and 4 runs scored.

"The injury for me last year was huge," Stargell said. "I had such a great start, and then to not just get hurt, but be done for the year...to miss the playoffs. It just motivated me that much more."

Thus far this year Stargell is batting .335 with 7 home runs, 33 RBIs and 29 runs scored.

Vegas C Ed McFarland Out For Season
Monday, May 26th, 2014: Ed McFarland of the Las Vegas Bosses suffered a broken kneecap in a game against the Alabama Airmen. He is expected to miss the rest of the season.

After a pair of poor years at the plate, McFarland was batting a respectable .264 so far this season. He had 2 homers and 14 RBIs.

Tom Daly, an original member of the Bosses, has been called up from the reserve squad and figures to get some time behind the dish. But Vegas fans was Ryan Doumit to get a shot at the job. Though hitting only .194 in backup action this season, Doumit has posted an .852 OPS over the past two seasons with both Vegas and St. Louis.

While an outstanding defensive catcher, Daly is a lifetime .191 hitter.

Chicago's Pollet on Top of His Game
Tuesday, May 27th, 2014: Howie Pollet made quick work of Philadelphia, blanking the Ringers 9-0 at Navy Pier Field today. The Chicago pitcher limited them to 6 hits to earn the victory. Pollet fanned 7 and walked 3.

To date this year, Pollet shows a 7-2 record, 10 starts, 87 innings, 46 strikeouts and a 1.66 ERA.

Pete Hill and Pat Putnam each homered for Chicago in the win.

Heroes Jonathan Papelbon Hurt
Wednesday, May 28th, 2014: The New York Heroes' shift on Jonathan Papelbon to the rotation had gone without a hitch. He's 5-1 with a sparkling 1.34 ERA, and Ubaldo Jimenez and Jim McCormick have split closer duties successfully while the Heroes race toward their sixth consecutive division crown.

That race took a yellow flag today, though, as Papelbon has been diagnosed with a torn ligament in his elbow and is done for the season.

"Pap's been remarkable," manager Bill McKechnie said. "To do what he's done after being the best closer in baseball for five years, it's phenomenal."

McKechnie declined to comment on whether the shift has had any effect on Papelbon's arm trouble. The 29-year-old righty missed two turns in the rotation in April with elbow discomfort. At the time, McKechnie bristled at the aforementioned question. Today, he quietly dismissed it.

Ralph Branca Put on DL With Torn Labrum
Wednesday, May 28th, 2014: Charlotte suffered its own pitching blow today, as Ralph Branca was diagnosed with a partially torn labrum.

Branca said he will try to rehab the injury rather than opting for surgery. Still, the injury figured to sideline Branca until after the All-Star break.

"I'll just spend a lot of time in the training room and hopefully speed up the healing process. Nobody likes to be out of the line-up," explained Branca.

Branca is 3-2 with a 4.88 ERA this season.

Denny LeMaster has been called up from the reserve squad to replace him in the rotation.

Strummers Murcer Out of Action
Wednesday, May 28th, 2014: With Oscar Charleston set to come off the disabled list tomorrow, the injury bug struck Memphis again as Bobby Murcer was hurt making a defensive play during a 5-2 win over Oklahoma City.

Murcer apparently tore an abdominal muscle twisting for a ball on a defensive play in the fifth inning. There's no timetable at present for his return, though manager Harry Wright said he will certainly be placed on the disabled list.

Thus far this year Murcer has hit .325 with 4 home runs and 16 RBIs.

Galvin Shuts out Philadelphia
Thursday, May 29th, 2014: Pud Galvin kept Philadelphia hitters off balance all game long as the Indianapolis pitcher blanked the Ringers 1-0. They managed to get 3 hits off Galvin, who struck out 4 and walked 1.

Abner Dalrymple homered off Joel Pineiro in the second inning for the game's only run.

This year Galvin has compiled a 4-5 record with a 4.33 ERA.

Idols Blank Alabama, Clarkson Winner
Thursday, May 29th, 2014: In an impressive outing John Clarkson hurled nothing but zeros at the Airmen today at MGM Field. The Los Angeles pitcher allowed 2 hits, fanned 4 and walked 3 in blanking Alabama 5-0.

"I had everything working," Clarkson said afterward. "I didn't feel particularly good warming up, but once I got out there I just got into a rythym."

Clarkson was backed by Heinie Groh's solo shot and a two-run homer from Benjamin Boyd, both off Alabama starter Eppa Rixey.

Clarkson has made 11 starts, tossed 81.1 innings, struck out 58 batters and walked 29. His record is 3-7 with a 4.76 ERA.

Bender Fires Shutout in Boston Win
Friday, May 30th, 2014: In an excellent mound performance, Chief Bender of the Boston Riders whitewashed the Louisville Racers 1-0 on a 4-hitter.

He said after the game, "I had my best stuff and did a good job of mixing up my pitches."

"We just didn't swing the bats well today. Bender did a good job keeping us guessing," said Louisville's Hardy Richardson, who went 0-for-3 with a walk.

In all, the Bender rang up 2 strikeouts and 3 walks in the shutout win.

This year Bender - Boston's first round pick in November's draft - has worked 93.1 innings with 22 strikeouts en route to a 5-6 record and 2.99 ERA.

Braun Bashes 5 Base Hits
Friday, May 30th, 2014: It's been a tremendous fall over the past few years for Ryan Braun. In 2011 with Memphis, he was an Outstanding Hitter candidate, batting .284 with 35 homers and 121 RBI. Last year, he hit .183, and he has struggled to stay over .200 this season.

But today, Braun was on fire, sparking his club to a 11-4 victory over the Scorpions. The San Antonio left fielder was a tough out and went 5 for 6 against Oklahoma City in a fine hitting display.

"I got my pitches and I connected. They all found the right holes on the diamond. Some days you hit shots and they're right at somebody... and some days they fall in."

Braun hit an RBI double in the 2nd, grounded out in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off E. Lopat in the 5th, singled in the 7th, doubled in the 8th and hit a two-run single in the 9th.

This season Braun is batting .212 with 11 hits, 2 home runs, 6 RBIs, 7 walks, .305 OBP and has scored 8 runs. He has played in only 23 games, relegated to the bench. But he hopes today's outburst sparks something.

"I've got a lot left to give," Braun said. "Now I just need to keep proving it."

Paige Tosses Shutout Against Las Vegas
Saturday, May 31st, 2014: Relying on pinpoint control and a good array of pitches, Satchel Paige of the Arizona Sandmen remained undefeated, holding the Las Vegas Bosses scoreless today. He scattered 3 hits over 9 innings and fanned 6 on his way to the 9-0 victory.

Paige was helped by three hits apiece from Shorty Fuller and Cory Sullivan. Jose Reyes, Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton each had two hits and two RBI, including a solo homer for Reyes, his third of the season.

Thus far this season, Paige has worked 83.2 innings with 57 strikeouts en route to a 6-0 record and a 2.15 ERA.

Dougherty Hits in 20 Consecutive Games
Sunday, June 1st, 2014: He's gone unsung in the midst of Chicago's success this season, but today Patsy Dougherty went 2-for-6 in the Chicago Hitmen 5-4 victory over the Indianapolis Engines to extend his hitting streak to 20 games.

Dougherty singled in the 1st, flied out in the 2nd, flied out in the 5th, grounded out in the 7th, flied out in the 9th and hit a solo-shot off F. Schupp in the 11th.

The streak matches that of teammate Frank Baker for the season's longest.

Dougherty is hitting .324 in 2014 with 22 RBIs and 1 home run.

Philadelphia's Donahue to Miss 13 Months
Sunday, June 1st, 2014: The Philadelphia Ringers' Red Donahue is done for the season after being diagnosed with a torn elbow ligament, the latest in a string of pitchers to suffer ths injury this season.

For the year Donahue has 11 relief appearances and a 4-0 record with 1 save. He has logged 49 innings and allowed 49 base hits. Opposing clubs have put up a .251 batting average against him. Donahue has rung up 14 strikeouts, surrendered 16 walks and fashioned a 4.59 ERA.

The team did not reveal who would be called up from the reserve squad to replace Donahue.

Alabama Puts Jacobs On 15-Day DL
Sunday, June 1st, 2014: Watching Mike Jacobs getting helped off the field today at The Air Field, fans of the Alabama Airmen feared the worst. The news wasn't quite as bad as initially feared, but the first baseman will miss 2 weeks with a foot contusion. "We feel we've dodged a bullet. When you see a guy go down like that, you worry right away," a team spokesman said. Jacobs suffered the injury being hit by a pitch in the game against the Knights.

This year Jacobs is batting .263 with 51 hits and 9 home runs. He has scored 29 times and has batted in 35 runs.

The Airmen activated Nick Swisher from the reserve squad.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Wichita's Gibbons NL Star of the Week
Monday, June 2nd, 2014: Wichita first baseman Jay Gibbons was named Northern League Player of the Week, hitting .400 with 4 homers and 8 RBI.

The Brigade are trying to stay afloat and hoping the Chicago cools down after its torrid start. The Brigade have won fewer games each year since their inaugural 108-win campaign that culminated with the 2009 PBL Championship. Last year was their first sub-.500 season, going 77-85. But the powerful Gibbons, who has become one of the games top power hitters, believes they're on the upswing.

"We had a tough year last season, some tough breaks," said Gibbons, who hit 33 homers despite missing five weeks with a wrist injury. "I think we're finding our way now, and there's plenty of season left."

Gibbons is currently batting .280 with 15 home runs, 55 RBIs and 32 runs scored. He has 56 hits in 200 at-bats.

Knights Murphy Named Southern League POW
Monday, June 2nd, 2014: When he was taken late in the fourth round in the 2011 draft, nobody predicted stardom from Dwayne Murphy. But after a great 2013 season, he's kept it up this year to become one of the PBL's elite players.

"We knew he was athletic," New Orleans manager Walter Alston said. "But he's taken that talent and run with it. He's a hell of a player."

The 26-year-old Murphy was named Southern League Player of the Week, batting .484 with 2 homers and 9 RBI.

In 51 games this season Murphy has compiled a .321 batting average with 63 hits and 9 home runs. He has also scored 24 times and knocked in 34 runs.
