Johnson extends record to 21 defenses

I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the LBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization.

June 13, 1909

Jack Johnson (34-1) scored a UD15 over (6/11) Sam Langford (20-6-1) to extend his record to 21 straight title defenses.

Johnson got into a little trouble in the middle rounds but for the most part controlled the fight with his superior defense. Johnson won the first 5 rounds and then the 9th through the 14th, to win an easy decision.

Langford knocked Johnson down with a solid right in the 8th, Johnson battled back to knock down Langford in the 11th.

Johnson landed 50.1% of his punches to Langford's 24.8%.

I had the fight 145-139. Ringside expert, Darryl Woodford, had it 145-140. The official judges had it 145-140/144-140/145-141.

On the undercard

HW - Frank Slavin (43/42) (21-13-1) KO4 Jim Jeffords (12/13) (10-13) (jeffords stepped up from LHW for this bout)
MW - George Rooke (17/14) (15-15-1) UD10 Walter Coffey (UR) (8-3)
HW - Billy Wilson (56/49) (14-17-1) KO4 Ed Martin (28/44) (17-15)
MW - Bill Fleming (UR) (8-0) TKO3 Ned McCann (UR) (5-2) (both fighters at pp for this club fight)
LW - Johnny Clark (UR) (8-3-2) SD8 Billy Edwards (club) (15-20-4) (clark at pp for this club fight)

Disqualification costs Papke title and undefeated streak

I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the LBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization.

June 16, 1909

Evidently (and I'm sorry to be blunt) referee Julio Alvardo likes the taste of Papke's nuts because he wouldn't get off them all night. Billy Papke (C/2) (17-1) dominated the entire fight with Charles McCoy (1/C) (22-9-3) but Alvardo warned Papke for everything he did. Holding and Hitting 3 times, Keep his punches up 3 times, leaning on McCoy's neck once, and Keeping his glove open while hitting once.

Papke was warned a total of 8 times and penalized a point twice. Finally in the 14th Alvardo stopped the fight. At which point Papke had to be restrained from knocking Alvardo out of the ring. Police had to be brought in as fans tried to get at Alvardo with intentions of lynching him.

Papke had dominated the fight, knocking McCoy down on two seperate occasions. I had the fight 126-120. T.C. Dale had it 125-120. The official judges had it 125-119/126-120/125-120.

An immediate rematch has been ordered and the LBC had refused to give the title belt to McCoy (a first in the LBC). The title has been declared vacant and the two will refight in August.

On the undercard

WW - Joe Walcott (8/8) (19-12-3) MD10 Jimmy Gardner (17/17) (14-16-3)
LW - Eddie Hanlon (UR/2) (11-3-1) UD10 Arthur Douglas (UR) (8-4)
HW - Tom Lees (34/25) (19-15) UD10 Jim Harvey (UR) (8-5-1)
WW - Harry Lewis (club) (8-14-1) UD8 Tom Meadows (UR) (6-1) (meadows at pp for this club fight)
HW - Bill Farnam (club/24) (15-15-1) MD10 John Ferguson (club) (15-19-2) (club fight)

What a perfect picture painted by that bout of Papke, who may have been one of the filthiest fighters of all time, on par with even Fritizie Zivic. The rematch should be awesome. This fight is another reason this game is so great.

Yeah I like the outcome but as commissioner I just couldn't give the belt to McCoy as he got his butt kicked from one end of the ring to the other. If the second match goes the same McCoy will get the title.

Cole keeps title with draw

I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the LBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization.

June 18, 1909

George Cole (9-7-4) scored a DRAW15 over Jack Britton (3/5) (15-3-3) to retain the LBA Welterweight title.

Despite Britton knocking down Cole in the opening minute of the 1st round, this bout was a snoozefest. Cole's left eye started swelling in the first also but Britton never put together enough punches in a round to make it much worse.

Cole was in complete control of the fight than gave away the last 3 rounds for the draw.

I had it 143-143. Steve McCarthy, ringside expert, ahd it 144-141 in favor of Britton. The official judges had it 143-143/144-143/143-144.

On the undercard

FW - Jerry Marshall (UR/9) (8-6-1) TKO10 Billy Finucane (5/4) (8-10-3) (I've got no explanation of Finucane's ranking)
WW - Honey Mellody (4/3) (16-14) UD10 Cy Flynn (UR) (8-5)
HW - Bob Armstrong (24/27) (23-11-3) KO8 Cleve Hawkins (39/46) (8-6-2)
WW - George Green (UR) (6-0-1) UD8 Arthur Evernden (UR) (7-1)
HW - Denver Ed Smith (club) (16-18-2) KO8 Steve Taylor (club) (14-18) (club fight)

Yeah but he is better than his record ... really underachieved at the start of his career but he is 4-0-1 in his last five.

Dempsey regains title after a year off

June 23, 1909

Jack DempseyNP (3/CH) (32-4) scored an easy TKO4 over Billy Baker (CH/12) to win the LBA Middleweight title. This was Dempsey's second fight after retiring for a year.

Dempsey controlled the fight from the opening bell and Baker appeared to be just trying to survive. Baker tried to fight in the third and got knocked around for his effort.

In the fourth, Dempsey pinned Baker to the ropes and landed at will until the referee stepped in to stop the fight.

Dempsey is one of two fighters to have comeback from retirement this year and the first to win a title.

On the undercard

FW - Benny Solomon (1/1) (13-1-2) SD10 Ben Jordan (UR) (9-3-2)
LH - Fred Russell (5/2) (13-5) KO6 Larry Temple (9/11) (14-3) (Temple was once 13-0)
WW - Dixie Kid (15/15) (17-14-5) UD10 Andy Watson (UR) (8-3-2)
LW - Harry Pidgeon (UR) (7-0-1) TKO6 Jim Smith (UR) (5-1-1) (both fighters at pp for this club fight)
HW - Dan Hickey (club) (9-30-1) TKO10 Dan McCarty (club/ret) (2-21-3) (club fight)

Yes go Dempsey hopefully he'll get to hold onto it for the nice long reign that he deserves. Oh yeah who was the other guy who cameback?

He only holds the LBA Middleweight title right now. Currently the LBC middleweight title is vacant due to the McCoy-Papke disqualification but they will fight again to see who gets the title.

Dempsey held the LBA Middleweight title once before back in 1906 for only 3 months as he lost it in his first defense.

HW Ed Dunkhorst was the other and he is also 2-0 since coming back to run his record to 20-13-3 and is currently ranked 16th.

Ha sweet so the comebackers are unbeaten thats good to hear. Talking about comebacks in the far future when you get to George Foreman how are you going to handle his comeback, will you just bring in Old George in the year that he cameback in real life?
