John's always quick with the ESPN fights.

That lackluster pair of JLW's on last night's card were treated really well by John. I like getting John's take on active guys, since I don't feel real comfortable rating them myself. I especially like John's ESPN additions. I like seeing how he rates guys I've watched myself. It's helping my comfort level when I think about trying my hand with active guys.

Flags

I think I've seen it discussed elsewhere on this forum but I've often thought that the flag choices in the game for nationality was too limited. This became a minor issue when I rated a fighter from New Caledonia. On boxrec they had a different flag for him than the French flag offered by the game. There is no flag for Kosovo. Fighters who came from that region before it fragmented should be represented by the old Yugoslav flag. Same with such defunct flags as the Soviet flag, the East German flag (mostly for amateur olympians), the Imperial Russian and German flags (I'd stay far away from the Nazi flag though), the Austro-Hungarian flag, the old South African and Canadian flags etc. It's a very minor issue but I thought I'd bring it up. But, if it were possible, how could one find and download new flags into the game?

No doubt & I enjoy it. I recall having to wait a year or more for new cards to come out with the old board game.

I have done that in my database. I go to a website that has maps and flags of the world and download, readjust the size and add it to the countries in the db. I keep Yugoslavian, USSR, etc. If there are fighters formally from those regions, I put them under that flag. I have Czechoslovakia too, even though I have the country split up as it is right now in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. So, for the fictional fighter, Ivan Drago, I have him from the Soviet Union, USSR, because when the movie was made, that is how the country was represented. I also have him under the Russian flag for current fighters.

Yes, I agree. Fighters should be represented by the flag, which they fought under. I think it is important from a historical perspective and I imagine the fighters themselves would probably prefer it that way also. Not having accurate flags in the game for some of the fighters is a minor annoyance that I hope is changed with the next version of the game.

For example, Mate Parlov, when he boxed he lived in Yugoslavia and not Croatia. Same for Marijan Benes. Anyhow, I found the Yugoslavia flag in Wikipedia.

Question on these Miscellaneous Fighters

hello John Dewey,

First my compliments and great thanks for all the HARD work you've put into contributing fighters here on the boards. I've been away from them for awhile and now doing a lot of catching up to what everyone has posted here. Man you and others have been busy the past year and more!

I had a question for you. the fighters here under this Miscellaneous fighters thread are ones that are new ratings done by yourself and others correct?

The ones then that you've posted under the various threads that are titled by weight class are ones done in the past by whomever and in most cases are already in either the official DB or have been posted in past somewhere here on the boards?

Thanks again for all your contributions here! I'm going through a lot of them here to see what might be very helpful for me in some future ratings I'm looking to do in a project I'm working on doing.

My Ratings

The ratings that I have posted in the threads named Heavyweight, Cruiserweight, Lightweight, Strawweight, etc. are almost all from earlier versions of the game that is now TBCB, even going back to the Avalon Hill days. Fighters in my other threads such Bare knuckle fighters, Miscellaneous, Butterbean's opponents, etc are my own ratings. Missing Women are also mostly from older versions of the game. Many of these have since been adopted into the official Data Pool.
I am most comfortable rating fighters I actually see on TV or in person. Boxrec is an indispensible tool for ratings but it has its limits. For instance, a fighter with a record of W6(KO1)/L22(Ko4)/D1 appears to be a boxer who hits like a girl but knows how to survive. But that isn't necessarily the case. He could be a low talent slugger with a weak punch but a strong chin. Sometimes you just have to make a guess.

Hi John,

May I request a rating for Juan Valenzuela? Boxrec #18120. In the early 2000s, he upset Julio Diaz with one punch, upset Ricardo Williams, and was all set for a nice payday against a young Miguel Cotto. He got involved with Don King, that fight never came off, and I never really heard from him again. Thanks John!

flags

If somebody has a fighter in their game with a flag that isn't in the game in general, try posting him on this thread so I can see if the flag transfers over with the fighter's file. That may be the easiest way for me or others who are barely PC literate to obtain the desired flags. The name applied to the flag would have to be unique for it to work. An Imperial German flag, for instance, would have to be paired with a name such as "Imperial Germany" rather than "Germany" since the latter already has a flag attached to the name. I'd like to have the Yugoslav flag in particular but anything I don't have would be welcome.

two to start

Boxrec is a great webpage and the guys who run it do excellant work, but there are peculiarities. In this last batch of five fighters, all are listed as Cruiserweights in boxrec but only two of them are legitimate for that weight division. Jeff McCracken is best known as a Middleweight. He only had two fights above the LHW limit (W1(KO0)/L1(KO1)). Glen Modicue was best at SMW and he only had one fight at Cruiserweight (LKO1). Most weird of all is Roosevelt Green. He fought most of his career as a Middleweight, then retired for eleven years before coming back for one fight at (you guessed it) Cruiserweight. (LTKO3). I thought I had rated Tom Van Hoof as a HW in this thread but when I looked up his stats I discovered to my horror that they were all blank! His top weight was 197 but, back in the 1970s when he fought the CW limit wasn't yet at 200 but at 190 or 195 depending on what organization dictated. Here are Van Hoof's ratings at HW and McCracken's rating at MW.

John,

The 'sets' you create (old mexico, bay st. louis tourney, trial horses) remind me a lot of purchasing a seperate floppy "data disk" in the old Lance Haffner days. Its greatly appreciated and thank you for all the effort.

BoxRec I think in many or most cases will list a fighters weight division by what he most recently fought as. A guy may start out at welter, move up to middleweight then finish his career as a Light Heavy. The majority of his career may have been at middle but BoxRec will most likely list him as a Light Heavy.
