To be certain. It could've been them.

The drive for six will start within a week or so. Have the usual end-of-season, draft-prep grunt work to do first. And I'm starting an almanac thread I want to get up and running that covers the league's first five years.

The upcoming draft has three five-star prospects...Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker and Joe Jackson.

BANGERS WEIGHING OPTIONS
Milwaukee front office weighing vital draft choice
They had the first pick in the expansion draft and the Amateur Draft last November, and still ended up with baseball's worst record (46-116). It was expected to be a rough first season for all the expansion clubs, but the Bangers were supposed to be the best of the lot.

Now they have the chance to improve quickly with the first pick in today's Amateur Draft. Ty Cobb is the consensus top prospect, but there's thought the Bangers may elect to go for pitching instead, where Walter Johnson and Christy Mathewson top most draft boards. As for position players, Joe Jackson and Tris Speaker could go #1 as well, and the Bangers front office is reportedly weighing batter vs pitcher, as well as Cobb's rumored personality deficiencies. Nobody doubts his ability however, though some say Speaker is the most ready to contribute right off the bat.

One thing is for sure...the Bangers can't get this one wrong.

BANGERS SHOCKING CHOICE
Team takes Walsh with top pick
Nov. 13, 2013

MILWAUKEE - The buzz earlier in the day kicked around a half dozen names as to whom the Milwaukee Bangers would select with the first pick in today's amateur draft.

Ed Walsh was not on the list.

But that's who the Bangers went with, and rumors of his spitball will surely join him in Milwaukee.

To be clear, Walsh is regarded as one of the top players in the draft, and was presumed to go Top 10. But with Cobb and Speaker, Johnson and Mathewson topping the list, most figured Walsh would go at 6 of 7 to either Alabama or Boston.

Instead, the self-assured 23-year-old righthander will likely step right in for the Bangers.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to help Milwaukee build a championship team," Walsh said. "I can't wait for spring."

Going to attempt to do a little something different this season and be a bit better about news from around the league rather than the monthly team-by-team reports. It won't be day-to-day, but it should provide a better pulse on the league. Just feel like the monthly reports are getting a bit repetitive, glorified stat dumps. So we'll see how this goes.

OFFSEASON RECAP
Feb. 16, 2014

Deal or No Deal?

All 20 teams in the Pastime Baseball League answered the latter this offseason, as not a single trade got done between the end of the 2013 year and our kickoff of spring training. The Winter Meetings came and went, January skipped by without a move and nobody's quite sure why.

Indianapolis general manger Paul Johnson said nothing had changed around the league.

"Attendance was strong, not just for us, but league-wide," he said. "Nobody I've spoken with has expressed any financial concern that limited deals. Guys just couldn't make anything happen."

The 2014 season will be an interesting one as next offseason will see the PBL's first free agent class, it's inaugural draft group having obtained its requisite six years. It could be teams are trying to solidify their cores now and will let the rest of their rosters flex as the season moves on.

Three managers lost their jobs, though none were fired. The contracts of Earl Weaver (Alabama), Patsy Tebeau (Arizona) and Danny Murtaugh (Las Vegas) weren't picked up when they expired in October.

Tebeau moved to Alabama, where he got a four-year deal. Murtaugh took a job as bench coach with the defending champion Sacramento Stingers, while Weaver ended up signing a four-year deal with Las Vegas.

Arizona has handed its job to first-year skipper Dick Howser, who also got a four-year deal, surprising given his inexperience. Howser gets a strong club to start with that won 87 games last season and has won two division titles in its five-year history.

Gonna be interesting to see how that Milwaukee pick works out. Some people might find themselves getting fired over it.

Will be interesting to see. I mean, Baseball America ranks him #4 in the preseason Top 100 prospects list, and he's a 4 1/2 star potential player. But there were guys who have the same ceiling but are more ready now (Walter Johnson, for one).

They had the worst hitting and the worst pitching, so I guess they had to make a choice. I would have taken Cobb, but I don't run a team

Morneau Finally Gets His Reward
Snubbed for Outstanding Hitter, slugger settles for new contract
Feb. 18, 2014

SACRAMENTO -- Many feel Justin Morneau should have been the Northern League Outstanding Hitter.

The world champions certainly do.

The Sacramento Stingers rewarded Morneau's torrid 2013 campaign yesterday, locking the 26-year-old slugger up for a three-year extension that will keep him anchoring the squad through the 2017 season.

The deal will pay Morneau $13.5 million over the three years.

"I'm obviously excited," Morneau said. "I came here hoping to win a championship and we did that. Now I hope we can be the first PBL team to repeat."

Morneau hit .280 with 44 homers and 125 RBI last season, and hit .400 with 6 homers and 13 RBI in the postseason, earning NLCS MVP honors.

"Anyone who watched last season knows Justin carried us on his back," manager Bobby Cox said. "He was the best player in the game last year and we're glad to know we'll have him long-term."

Stargell Ready to Rip Again
Memphis outfielder begins baseball activities after shoulder injury
Feb. 20, 2014

MEMPHIS -- He led all leftfielders in VORP (33.8) despite playing only 61 games. Projected over a full season, his numbers would have been .348-45-183.

Sure, Willie Stargell probably wouldn't have kept up that pace. But it would have been fun to watch the powerful rookie try.

Instead, Stargell's rookie campaign was cut short by a torn labrum suffered diving for a ball last June 11. Now, he says he's ready to get back out there and give the defending Southern League champion Memphis Strummers a full season.

"I was robbed of two thirds of my season," Stargell said with slight exaggeration. "And worse, I was robbed of the postseason and helping my team win a championship. So I'm extra determined now."

Stargell, Oscar Charleston and Bobby Murcer were baseball's best outfield last season. Mitchell Page (.254-16-76) was fine stepping in for Stargell, but still was a dramatic step down. Dale Murphy (.366-3-13) showed his potential after his September call-up. So there's plenty of outfielders down in Memphis.

But Stargell's the one with the most intrigue - as the world already knows of Charleston's greatness.

"I hope to push us over the top," Stargell said. "I can't wait for the season."

Spring Training Report
Week of March 10-16
Arizona SS Willie Wells Out a Month
Sunday, March 9th, 2014:
Arizona fans will be disappointed to learn that Willie Wells suffered a hamstring strain while colliding with a player at a base in today's game. After the doctor informed Arizona Sandmen manager Dick Howser that Wells was expected to miss 4 weeks, Howser said he remained hopeful Wells would be ready for Opening Day. If not? "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," Howser said. Shorty Fuller
will get plenty of time during the spring to be ready just in case.

Arizona Locks Up Valverde Through 2015
Monday, March 10th, 2014: The
Arizona Sandmen have finished a deal with All Star-closer Jose Valverde that will extend his stay in Arizona through the 2015 season. Valverde
will maintain his current contract for 2014, but earn $2,974,500 in 2015.

Valverde has totaled 133 saves in his career, good for third in Pastime Baseball League history behind New York's Jonathan Papelbon (142) and Alabama's Brendan Donnelly (141). In 239 games, he has a 19-20 record, 2.81 ERA and 252 strikeouts in 259 innings.

Idols Lose Donlin For Season
Monday, March 10th, 2014: The
Los Angeles Idols were dealt a severe blow when Mike Donlin was tore the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The injury will keep the 2011 Southern League Outstanding Hitter out for the season. Donlin stopped short rounding second in a game against the Alabama Airmen and his right knee buckled. Doctors indicated it would take Donlin
at least 8 months to heal.

"It's a devastating loss, no question," manager Charlie Manuel said.

The loss of
Donlin is a crushing blow for a once vaunted offense that seemed to lose its way last season. Donlin led the team with 17 homers despite missing six weeks with a broken leg. Team doctors say the knee injury has nothing to do with the leg injury last season, from which Donlin
recovered to play the final two months of the season without incident.

The injury seems to ensure that rookie
Ty Cobb will be on the Opening Day roster. The 19-year-old Cobb, taken fourth in the amateur draft in November, was originally considered likely to open on the reserve squad. But the loss of Donlin means the Idols will hope Cobb
figures out the big leagues in short order.

Louisville Signs 2B Hardy Richardson For 2 Years
Friday, March 14th, 2014: The Louisville Racers re-signed second baseman
Hardy Richardson
to a two-year deal worth $6.8 million.

One of Louisville's original draftees, Richardson places second only to Dan Brouthers in many categories on the Racers' alltime ledger, including games (741), VORP (125), runs (372), at bats (2777), hits (713) and homers (85).

Richardson was an All-Star last season and hit .272 with 26 homers and 95 RBI in 2013, and rediscovered his patience a bit. After a rookie season in which he posted a .395 OBP, Richardson has seen that number drop the prior three seasons before rising to a respectable .345 last year.

Heroes Lose Sanderson, Papelbon May Start
Saturday, March 15th, 2014: The
New York Heroes lost a vital cog as starter ScottSanders
on has been diagnosed with shoulder tendonitis and inflammation that could sideline him until the All-Star Break.

Sanderson won 19 games last year, posting a 3.48 ERA and earning support for Northern League Outstanding Pitcher, an award ultimately won by Charlotte's Ben Sheets
.

Manager Bill McKechnie reportedly has broached the topic with alltime saves leader
Jonathan Papelbon about his joining the rotation to start the year. Jim McCormick, who had offseason surgery, might not be ready for opening day and McKechnie reportedly believes Papelbon could handle the starting duties. Tug McGraw, picked up after the New Orleans Knights released him, could serve as closer, as could Ubaldo Jimenez, who has filled the role before when Papelbon was injured.

Spring Training Report
Week of March 17-23

Wichita Signs DeJesus For 3 Years
Tuesday, March 18th, 2014: Media analysts hailed Wichita's signing of David DeJesus, one of Pastime Baseball League's brightest stars, as a pivotal move.

He's been a role player throughout his career, but DeJesus has produced every time he's played. He's a lifetime .312 hitter, and the three-year extension - locking him up through 2017 - will pay him $1.65 million a year.

The move is a smart one for Wichita, which comes off a poor season in the league's smallest market and needs to take money into the equation. They like DeJesus enough to keep him around, and the deal saves them cash in the long run, as DeJesus would likely have earned upward of $2 million through arbitration.

Sources say DeJesus will get a chance to win the centerfield job from Cherokee Davis this spring. So far, DeJesus is batting .261 while Davis is struggling at .145.

Ruth Pleasing In Chicago
Sunday, March 23, 2014: The Chicago Hitmen have reason for optomism as Babe Ruth has coming into camp looking strong and playing like a man about to take off. Ruth has slammed six homers this spring in 50 at bats, batting .280 while - perhaps most importantly to the Hitmen - posting a .400 OBP.

"It's been the story since he was drafted," manager Ned Hanlon said. "If he develops his eye, the sky is the limit. And right now, he looks like he's refined his approach at the plate."

Ruth hit 28 homers last year and improved his walks, which had never topped 30, to 68. But his average fell from .290 in 2012 to .242. That, most believe, was an aberration and a product of much of his supporting cast being dealt away, as Adam Dunn, Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton were all sent packing.

"It was a strange year," Ruth said. "And a tough one, losing the division late like we did. But I'm ready to put it all together, and I think my teammates are, too. We've been about potential for too long. It's time for results.

Spring Training Report
Week of March 24-30
St. Louis Loses Joe Sambito
Tuesday, March 25th, 2014: The St. Louis Tides announced this afternoon that closer Joe Sambito would be out of action until at least late September, and quite possibly for the season.

Sambito has suffered a torn flexor tendon and will require surgery.

The 26-year-old lefty was drafted in the second round of the 2011 Amateur Draft by the Orlando Orcas, but never threw a pitch for the club. St. Louis signed him as a free agent before last spring training and Sambito became the expansion club's closer.

While almost everything went wrong for St. Louis last year, Sambito went right, saving 29 games with a 2.41 ERA and allowing only one homer in 56 innings.

Manager Joe McCarthy couldn't say yet who will assume closer duties for the club. One name mentioned was 19-year-old Larry Dierker, who impressed when activated late last year, going 6-4 with a 2.94 ERA. The Tides had the Southern League's 4th best ERA last season, but it seems questionable to remove Dierker from the rotation mix.

Orlando, Munger Agree on Extension
Saturday, March 29th, 2014: Fans hailed the signing of Red Munger today as the Orlando Orcas starting pitcher came to terms with the club.

Munger will make $2.19 million this season and then $8,49 million over the following 3 years, Munger has improved each season, peaking with a 13-12 mark and a 3.86 ERA in 2013.

Skipper Eddie Dyer is thrilled to know he has Munger locked up.

"Red has gotten better every year and we think he's ready to make that leap from good to very good, perhaps even great," Dyer said. "With our existing staff, and Mordecai Brown coming in from the draft, I really like the way things are shaping up for the season."

Munger has chalked up a lifetime ERA of 4.19 with 41 victories and 37 defeats. He has totaled 488 career strikeouts in 664 innings while holding opponents to a .234 batting average.

Spring Training Report
Week of March 31-April 6
Knights, Closer Blackwell Reach Extension
Wednesday, April 2nd, 2014: Happy times in New Orleans as the KnightsEwell Blackwell put the finishing touches on a $5,120,000 contract extension that will keep the 26-year-old in town through 2016.

The signing is great news for New Orleans as Blackwell has developed into one of the game's top closers.

Last season, Blackwell went 3-3 27 saves and a 2.68 ERA. Lifetime Blackwell has saved 51 games with a 15-16 mark and a 3.71 ERA.

RF Flick Extends Deal with Indianapolis
Thursday, April 3rd, 2014: Indianapolis fans celebrated as word of a signing became reality. Elmer Flick won't be pulling up stakes anytime soon, as he has signed a 2-year extension for $2.15 million a year.

The deal caught some by surprise, as Flick is coming off the worst season of his career, hitting .238 with 22 homers and 74 RBI. His VORP of 16.8 was less than half his previous career low of 42.9 reached in 2010. He had scored 100+ runs in each of his first four seasons before touching the plate only 69 times last season.

To date Flick has a .286 career batting average and has totaled 116 home runs.

Experts say last year's season is precisely why the Engines signed Flick now, as the team thinks last season was a fluke and Flick will return to form. Thus, it was better to lock him up now instead of waiting for his demands to rise.

New Orleans, Willis Agree on 2-Year Pact
Sunday, April 6th, 2014: New Orleans officials and Dontrelle Willis shook hands on a $6,730,000 deal today. The extension will keep Willis from becoming a free agent for at least 2 years.

Since he joined the league, Willis has collected 78 victories against 40 defeats with a 3.64 ERA.

Willis won 20 games for the first time last season, going 20-7 with a 2.95 ERA to lead the staff. The 25-year-old lefty finished fourth in the voting for Southern League Outstanding Pitcher.

Knights Sign Another, Inking Takashi Saito
Sunday, April 6th, 2014: The New Orleans Knights inked their third player of this final week before Opening Day tomorrow,
signing Takashi Saito to a 1-year extension at a rate of $895,000 per year.

While many were enthusiastically behind the signing, others worried about Saito's age. Saito is the PBL's oldest player, having turned 40 days before spring training opened.

Saito has appeared in 222 games in his career, picked up 106 saves, tossed 251.1 innings and posted a 26-22 record. The one-time All-Star closer has a lifetime ERA of 3.40, but went 6-3 with 2 saves and a 4.25 ERA last season with Orlando and New Orleans.
