What was the attraction of Heskey besides the fact that he was a body to push out there? Why not give a young player the job?

Artificial turf is almost gone over here too. Even the new domed stadium in Arizona will have grass that will be roled outside after the games.

Never rated Heskey to be honest but Jewell seems to get the best out of players good example being Jason Roberts who had done nothing in the Premiership before but had a great season for Wigan last season, so I think Heskey will do well under Jewell plus with Camara he should strike up a good frontline partnership.

Sport should never be played on artifical turf.

I hope he does. If so, then Jewell will indeed be a miracle worker.

Agreed. Many a career over here were needlessly ruined by that stuff.

Gloucester Rugby I meant, but yes Gloucester City are in the Southern League.

In fact one day in May 1997 could have been the catalyst for the difference in the two rivals that we currently have.
On 3rd May, Gloucester City and Cheltenham Town went into the last day of the Southern League level on points - Cheltenham could only draw 0-0 with Burton, which meant that Gloucester could win promotion to the Conference if they could beat mid-table Salisbury. However the Tigers lost 3-1 at home, so it was the Robins who went up to the Conference by a single point, and the rest as they say is history.

 2 Cheltenham Town 42 21 11 10 76 44 74 [P]
 3 Gloucester City 42 21 10 11 81 56 73
 4 Halesowen Town 42 21 10 11 77 54 73

What happened to Gloucester? Did their owner pull out the financial rug? They indeed did seem to be on the brink of success.

It was like with so many non-league owners - they get sick of not getting any success and pull out, and then there are very few people out there who want to put in money and time into something like a non-league football club to come and replace them. To own a non-league club, you've really got to love it, because there is no money to be gained from it. That's why so many money bags chairman have bought clubs and then left them crippled in debt when they don't get anywhere (see Canvey Island, Telford, Crawley, Barrow , and even league clubs like Aldershot and Maidstone have gone to the wall).

As for Gloucester City, they finished in the top half the following season as well, but then soon went downwards, even falling to the next level down (Southern League D1 West), before returning a few seasons later to the Southern League Premier Division (and that's where they are now). However there were plenty of times they nearly joined a long list of bankrupt clubs.

No, I've never heard of him, sorry. And even if I had, if it is FM you are on about, then it is best to judge him by his game ratings, as that is what is important - not what he does IRL (see Gavin Knight in my dynasty).

Preston North End went on to win the title, going unbeaten through their 22 games, earning them the nickname "The Invincibles".

The feat was finally repeated by Arsenal 115 years later (2003-04).

Code:
			P	W	D	L	F	A	Pts
Preston North End	22	18	4	0	74	15	40
Aston Villa 22	12	5	5	61	43	29
Wolverhampton Wanderers	22	12	4	6	50	37	28
Blackburn Rovers	22	10	6	6	66	45	26
Bolton Wanderers	22	10	2	10	63	59	22
West Bromwich Albion	22	10	2	10	40	46	22
Accrington 22	6	8	8	48	48	20
Everton 22	9	2	11	35	46	20
Burnley 22	7	3	12	42	62	17
Derby County 22	7	2	13	41	61	16
Notts County 22	5	2	15	40	73	12
Stoke City 22	4	4	14	26	51	12
Preston would go on to win the title the following year as well, and to this day, these are the only two English league championships the club has won.
