EAGLES RIDE HARLEY TO VICTORY
Give the ball to Harley Mitchell. That appears to be the only play in the Philadelphia Eagles offensive playbook but when you have a play that works as well as that one why make any changes. Mitchell carried the ball 35 times, 1 shy of the league record, for 135 yards as the Eagles beat Tampa Bay 24-22. It was a dissappointing loss for the Bucs defense, which struggled between the 20's but was outstanding in the red zone. The Eagles managed just one touchdown, a 2 yard pass from Doug Bass to Scott Pearson. The rest of the Philadelphia scoring came from a first quarter safety and 5 field goals off the toe of kicker C.R. Evans. TITANS NEED OVERTIME TO GROUND JETS Manfred Gayle's 3rd touchdown pass of the game, a 30 yarder to Wayne Scales in overtime, gave the Tennessee Titans an opening week 23-17 win over the Jets in New York. The game went back and fourth with the Jets tying it to force overtime on a 3 yard run from QB Keith Reeves with 41 seconds remaining in regulation time. Reeves passed for 239 yards and 1 touchdown. The touchdown strike was a 30 yarder in the second quarter to RB Steve *Van Buren. Van Buren had 6 catches for 77 yards and he ran for another 65. Linebackers Fran Farmer and James Saylor had terrific games for the Jets while for Tennessee the entire secondary had strong day. MOORE HAS 3 INTERCEPTIONS AS GIANTS BLANK FALCONS 21-0 The Giants continued their strong play from the preseason while the Falcons offense never took flight in the season opener as New York blanked the birds 21-0. Cornerback Matt Moore looked like he was Falcons QB Arnie *Herber's favourite recevier. Moore picked off 3 Herber passes and returned one 90 yards for a touchdown. The Giants, who were 4-0 in preseason play, got most of their offense from running back Malcolm Lake who gained 102 yards on the ground and led the team with 4 catches. SPARE PART CARPENTER LEADS VIKINGS PAST CARDINALS You can forgive anyone except for the most diehard Minnesota Vikings fan if they do not know the name Kenyatta Carpenter. In 6 seasons the wide receiver has just 25 career receptions for the Vikings but his real value is as a punt returner. Entering this season he averages over 9 yards a punt return and has ran 10 punts back all the way for majors. Today, he had the best game of his professional career. Carpenter returned 2 first half punts for touchdowns and caught his first NFL touchdown pass to pace Minnesota past the visiting Arizona Cardinals 24-17. His 2 td punt returns, of 87 and 88 yards, tie an NFL record for most punt returns for TD's in a game. PACKERS BLITZ NINERS 31-17 It looks like it could be a long year for San Francisco quarterback Koy Harris...if he survives. The 49ers offensive line took the day off as Green Bay recorded 8 sacks en route to a 31-17 victory over the 49ers. New San Francisco head coach Anthony Cason told fans not to panic after the Niners dropped all four preseason games. Perhaps it is now time to panic after a brutal effort in a loss to Green Bay, which is anything but a powerhouse. Green Bay looked very good on this day. Running back Tony *Canadeo ran for 154 yards and caught four passes for 58 yards. He also scored a pair of touchdowns. QB Cecil *Isbell threw for 3 touchdowns but he was also picked off 3 times. Defensively linemen Mike Smith, with 4 sacks, and Brian Robinson with 2 led the way. Linebacker Bulldog *Turner also had a strong game. The San Francisco defense did a decent job against the pass although they gave Isbell all day in the pocket. The run defense was also troubling. Despite being sacked 8 times and pressured all day Harris did manage to complete 28 of 38 passes for 223 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Imagine what he could do with some blocking. PANTHERS SHUT DOWN COWBOYS Keith Meade ran for 138 yards and 1 touchdown while cornerback Tom West chipped in a 67 yard interception return for a TD as Carolina beat Dallas 17-6. The Cowboys were unable to establish any form of a running game as ex-University of Tennessee star Raymond Cash gained just 37 yards on the ground. QB Doug Schroeder, who has a history of making bad decisions with the ball, was picked off twice including West's third quarter scamper that doomed the Cowboys to defeat. CHARGERS CRUSH CHAMPS They were certainly ready for some football in San Diego where the Chargers spanked the defending champion Baltimore Ravens 27-3. San Diego QB Leon Jones threw for a pair of first half touchdowns including one on the Chargers opening possession of the game. The Baltimore defense, among the league's best a year ago when the Ravens went 10-6 enroute to their first league championship, never recovered as San Diego controlled the entire game. Jones, who completed 17 out of 27 pass attempts for 244 yards was named the player of the game. It wasn't all good news for the Chargers however as their best defensive back, two time allpro CB Adrian Cerqua suffered a serious neck injury and could be out for the rest of the season. GLENN LEAD PATS PAST JAGS Veteran RB Mario Glenn scored all 3 touchdowns as New England beat Jacksonville 21-7. Glenn, an 8th year pro from UTEP, ran for 132 yards and 2 scores. He also had 4 receptions out of the backfield for 52 yards including a 21 yard touchdown reception. Aside from Glenn, no one on offense for either squad was very effective as the defenses did a terrific job stopping the pass. A 25-yard touchdown pass from Justin Jackson to Lewis Smith just before half time accounted for the Jaguars scoring. Jackson would complete just 11 of 29 passes for 91 yards. BILLS LOSE TWO QB'S BUT STILL BEAT TEXANS Starting QB Leon Allen and backup Rod Bird were both knocked out of the game but rookie Bob Parrish responded with a strong performance to help the Buffalo Bills past Houston 17-6. Allen left with a broken foot early in the second quarter and two plays later Bird, who was still injured from the preseason, hurt his ankle while handing the ball off. As a result, Parrish was thrown into the fray and looked quite good in his pro debut. The third round pick from Kutztown completed 8 of 11 passes for 129 yards and an early 4th quarter touchdown that put the game out of reach. Allen will likely miss a couple of weeks but Bird is probable for next week so Parrish will likely return to clipboard duties. BRONCOS WIN DEBUT OVER STEELERS FOR COACH MCDONNELL Ryan McDonnell left the NFC champion Chicago Bears partly because he considered himself a defensive specialist and could never get the high octane Bears offense to play his style of smash-mouth football. He went to Denver hoping to turn the hapless Broncos into his kind of team. Instead it looks like all that time with Sid Lickman rubbed off on Coach McDonnell as his QB in Denver, Jay Cason, passed for 3 touchdowns and went deep early and often in a 27-10 win over the hometown Pittsburgh Steelers. The Broncos also had a strong ground game as Oscar Hartings gained 120 yards. It was a dissappointing loss for the Steelers who were 3-1 in the preseason. QB Tom Friede was given the starting nod with the inconsistant Juqua Shirk sidelined, but Friede was awful completing just 16 over 47 attempts and getting picked off twice. Second round pick Elmer *Angsman must long for his Notre Dame days after being limited to 26 yards rushing. In other action: Issac Burke tossed 3 touchdown passes as visting Indianapolis beat Miami 27-13. The Kansas City Chiefs did not get a great effort from newly resigned QB Ulish Groce but they did get enough to beat Cleveland 17-7. Groce, a cinderella story if there ever was one - undrafted free agent gets starting nod midway through rookie season after injuries and never lets go - completed 17 of 26 passes for 221 yards but threw one interception that led to the lone Cleveland score. Running back Bruce Jones ran for 76 yards and a touchdown. He also had 5 catches for 64 yards. Cleveland contolled the clock and put up more yardage but QB Bob Slaughter threw a costly fourth quarter interception that Larry Barnett returned for a Chiefs touchdown that effectively ended the game for the Browns. NCAA FOOTBALL BEGINS THIS WEEKEND Good news college football fans. The long offseason is all but over and we are ready for some big time college gridiron action beginning next week. However, none of the marquee teams like top ranked Army or number two Notre Dame will being play in the opener. In fact, just 3 games are on the docket and none include a top 20 team. Two of the games feature little known small colleges as Williams Field visits the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. The Lumberjacks are members of the Border Conference, as is New Mexico State. The Aggies will be hosting Beaumont Hospital. The third game will feature a couple of independants from the east. The Merchant Marine Acadamy from King's Point visits the Villanova Wildcats. For the Wildcats it is a key tuneup for their game against the number one ranked Army squad the following week. CANADIAN FOOTBALL RESULTS the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union began its schedule with a couple of game on Monday. The visiting Ottawa Rough Riders scored a touchdown in the final minute to tie the Hamilton Tigers 13-13 while in Toronto that game that many feel is a preview of the league championship ended up being a blowout. The Montreal Alouettes dropped the hometown Toronto Argonauts 26-9. In the Western Provincial League a pair of unbeaten teams hooked up and the home side came out on top. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers beat the visiting Calgary Stampeders 20-12. Earlier in the holiday weekend the Ontario Provicial League had a pair of games and in both cases the home side emerged victorious. The Toronto Indians topped their into rivals from Balmy Beach 17-7 while the Hamilton Wildcats dumped visting Ottawa 27-6. IKE WILLIAMS MAKES IT LOOK EASY IN WIN OVER BRITISH CHAMP Many were surprised when World Lightweight Boxing Champion Ike Williams agreed to travel across the pond to face British champ Ronnie James but Williams made the trip look like nothing more than a paid vacation with a 6th round knockout of the United Kingdom's best lightweight. Williams appeared like he had a little bit of rust in the first minute as the challenger connected on a pair of uppercuts. That seemed to quickly shake the rust off of the champ and James barely touched him the rest of the way. In fact, James did not connect with a solid blow from the 1 minute mark of round 1 until midway through the 5th round. By that time the Welshman had picked himself up off the canvas twice. James did land a couple of punches late in the fifth but Williams floored him for good a minute in to the 6th round when he connected with a flurry of punches to James head. SUGAR RAY ROBINSON CLAIMS WELTERWEIGHT CROWN Sugar Ray Robinson knocked out Marty Servo in the 11th round of their matchup at Madison Square Garden to determine the post war Welterweight Boxing Champion of the World. Robinson was in control of the fight throughout and simply wore down Servo. The 11-1 Robinson suffered just one loss in the year long tournament to determine a champion after boxing was virtually shut down during World War II. The only fighter to beat Robinson was Charley Fusari, who stopped the champ in 10 rounds nearly a year ago. Since then Robinson has won 7 straight while Fusari has dropped 3 of his last 4 bouts including one on the undercard of the Robinson-Servo fight. Fusari's loss, a 4th round TKO by Jackie Wilson, drops him out of the top 10 in the welterweight category. Here are the top 10 Welterweights 1 - Sugar Ray Robinson WORLD CHAMPION 11-1 Harlem, NY 2 - Jackie Wilson 28-3-1 Los Angeles 3 - Johnny Bratton 21-3-1 Chicago 4 - Marty Servo 29-4-1 New York City 5 - Billy Graham 17-3-2 New York City 6 - Tommy Bell 27-2 Youngstown, Ohio 7 - Cocoa Kid 23-3-1 Puerto Rico 8 - Jimmy Doyle 13-4 Los Angeles 9 - Izzy Jannazzo 26-2-1 New York City 10- Cliff Curvis 17-8-5 Swansea, Wales United Kingdom UNBEATEN ORTIZ SHOCKED BY CANADIAN GAGNON Manuel Oritz was an overwhelming favourite heading into his Bantamweight Title bout against 4th ranked contender Fernando Gagnon. Ortiz was 37-0-2 after a year of qualifying bouts in an effort to determine the post war champion for the Bantamweight division. He was the only unbeaten fighter and after a draw against Gagnon early in qualifying last spring he responded with a dominating performance ko'ing Gagnon in the 9th round 4 months ago. This time around the 15 round bout went to the scorecards and although all three were close it was an unanimous decision for the French-Canadian. The native of Disraeli, Quebec is the biggest surprise winner out of all the weight categories that have been decided so far. The Lightheavyweight and Flyweight titles are the final two of the eight major categories and they will have a champion crowned next week. A little early but I was wondering for those of you following this thread would there be interest in me posting a poll for voting on different awards like TSN Athlete of the Year, Heisman Trophy winner, MVP's in each of the sports as the seasons end, etc?

I would be very interested!!! Also I have a question about college football- how are you handling the polls, and how are you going to determine the bowl matchups?

For the initial poll I took the end of the 1945 season and compared it roughly with the real life results for 1946. I am not quite sure how I will handle the week to week changes. Likely I will make the decisions myself but perhaps in some cases I will request feedback.
As for the bowl matchups here is pretty much what I have decided on but a lot will depend upon the polls. COTTON BOWL will feature SWC1 against an at large team. Likely the top ranked independant SUGAR BOWL has SEC #1 vs an at large team again likely high ranked independant or perhaps best conference runner up ROSE BOWL PCC winner vs Western Conference winners (which are now called PAC10 and Big 10) HARBOR BOWL in San Diego - at large likely 2 conference winners from either Border, Mountain States or MVC. ORANGE BOWL Big 6 winner vs at large GATOR BOWL at large likely along lines of Western #2 vs SEC #2 OIL BOWL, RAISIN BOWL, SUN BOWL and ALAMO BOWL all will be at large bids.

PENNANT RACES HEATING UP
INDIANS LEAD IS 3 GAMES WITH LESS THAN A MONTH TO PLAY After a dissappointing 5th place finish a year ago the Cleveland Indians are now just 3 weeks away from making their 3rd World Series appearance of the decade. The Tribe hold a 3 game lead on Boston atop the American League standings. The Washington Senators, who led the league a month ago, now find themselves 6 and half games back and fading fast. One thing against the Indians is that after playing 4 home games this week, they are on the road for their final 15 contests which include stops in both Boston and Washington. The Red Sox will also need to be road warriors as 16 of their remaining 21 games will be away from Fenway Park. The Senators have the friendliest schedule with their final 13 games at home including a 4-game series to end the season against last place Chicago. The problem for Washington is they are likely too far back for it to matter. Washington has lost 9 of it's last 13 games. Last week Cleveland went 5-2 while the Red Sox won 5 of their 6 games. Included in that was a short two game series between the two clubs in Boston. They split the series with the Tribe winning 11-5 on Tuesday thanks to 4 rbi's from Charlie English and 3 from Lou Boudreau. On Wednesday, Boston won a blowout 13-0, as Babe Young had 3 hits and drove in 4 runs. Speaking of Young, for the second week in a row he was named the American League player of the week. Young hit .500 with 3 homers and 12 rbi's in 6 games this week. Other notable performances from the week including a 6 hit game from A's catcher Tommy Heath against the Browns on September 7th. Heath homered, doubled and scored 4 runs in the A's 12-11 win. Don Gutteridge of the Indians tied the AL single game mark for doubles with 4 in the Tribe's 17-1 taming of the Tigers on Friday. It was a career high 5 hit day for the backup infielder. PIRATES HANGING ON TO NATIONAL LEAGUE LEAD The Cincinnati Reds crept another half game closer but the Pittsburgh Pirates continue to lead the National League pennant race. The Pirates and Reds split a 4 game series to start the week with Pittsburgh winning the first two 8-1 and 3-1. The second game was Cliff Melton's major league leading 25th victory of the season for the Bucs. The Reds got back in the race when Ewel Blackwell and Johnny Hetki combined on a 5-hit 3-2 victory Wednesday and on Thursday Alex Kampouris hit 2 homers to lead the Reds to a 10-1 win. The split kept Cincinnati 2 and a half games behind the Bucs but that difference shrank to 2 games the following day when the Pirates lost 6-2 in Philadelphia while the Reds were travelling to Brooklyn. Both clubs won easily on Saturday: Cliff Melton got win number 26 in the Pirates 11-4 victory in Philadelphia while Arnold Carter 2-hit the Dodgers in a 10-0 Reds win. Both the Reds and Pirates lost yesterday to keep the spread at 2 games. Here are the remaining games for each club. Pittsburgh does have a couple of more home games left but for the most part the schedule is pretty even for each club. If either team can sweep the 2-game set they play against each other later this week it could mean the difference. PITTSBURGH - Home (4 ) Cin Sep 14,15, Phi Sep 16,17 Road( 15) Phi Sep 11, Bkn Sep 12,13 StL Sep 19-22, Bsn Sep 23,24 ChC Spe 25-27 NYG Sep28-Oct 1 CINCINNATI - Home (2) Bkn Sep 16,17 Road(16) Bkn Sep 11, Pit Sep 14,15, ChC Sep 18-21, NYG Sep 23,24 StL Sep 25-27 Bsn Sep28-Oct1 If the Reds are going to overtake the Pirates and win their first pennant since 1926 they will have to do so without Joe Dimaggio. Dimaggio is eligible to come off the Disabled List next Sunday but word is his groin injury will keep him sidelined for the rest of the month. The Pirates, who last won a pennant in 1937 but have 3 second place finishes since then, have an injury of their own to contend with although to a far less important player. Catcher Tom Padden is done for the year with a broken foot. The 37 year old played 85 games this season and hit .226. Backup Bill Salkeld and Mickey Owen will platoon in Padden's absence. COOPER HITS FOR CYCLE St. Louis' catcher Walker Cooper accomplished a difficult feat in a game against the Cubs, hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .281! In the 2nd inning he belted a double off Ken Raffensberger. A single in the 4th off Raffensberger accounted for his 2nd hit. His 3rd hit, a two-run homerun offRaffensberger in the 6th inning, landed an estimated 395 feet from home plate. A triple off Raffensberger in the 8th inning, accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Walker did drive in 2 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He now has a total of 134 hits this season, accounting for a .297 batting average. He's now the 63rd player in league history to hit for the cycle! Mel Ott was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 5/6/1946. Meanwhile, Braves pitcher Ken Holcombe was named NL player of the week. Holcombe was 2-0 with a 1.59 era and threw a shutout. For the season, the second year pro is 9-11 with a 4.00 era. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR CANDIDATES With the season winding down here is a look at the candidates for rookie of the year in each league: NATIONAL LEAGUE - Some decent pitchers making a real contribution and a couple of good young outfielders. At this stage the race for top rookie in the National League appears to still be wide open. Warren Spahn Boston Braves - The 25 year old is the most consistant starter on the last place Braves. Presently Spahn is 14-14 with a 3.69 era Dave Koslo New York Giants - Only pitcher on the hapless Giants to be in double digit victories, Koslo also has far and away the best era on the staff. He was rewarded for a quick start with a spot on the midseason allstar team. Presently he is 14-15 with a 3.48 era Joe Hatten Philadelphia - At 29 a little old for a rookie but Hatten has improved greatly as the season wore on. He was pitcher of the month in July after going 5-1 with a 1.64 era. Began the season in Brooklyn but was traded to the Phillies. 11-5 with a 3.41 era so far. Johnny Hetki Cinncinnati The 24 year old made the allstar team and has been the Reds closer. He is 3-2 with 11 saves and a 2.76 era. Saved two very big games against Pittsburgh in the last two weeks to keep the Reds in the pennant chase. Del Ennis Philadelphia - Just 21, Ennis has had no problem adapting to the major leagues. He was player of the week in early August and is hitting .279 with 10 homers and 66 rbi's as an everyday outfielder for the Phillies. Ralph Kiner Pittsburgh The 23 year old outfielder became an everyday player in late June and has not looked back. In 96 games is hitting .280 with 9 homers and 55 rbi's for the first place Pirates. AMERICAN LEAGUE - A slim crop in the Junior Circuit with just 4 rookies seeing any large amount of playing time. Fleming appears to be the overwhelming favourite for the rookie of the year award. Les Fleming Washington - The Senators have gone into a slump but you can't blame the 31 year old career minor leaguer who is making the most of his first real opportunity in the majors. Fleming is leading the league in batting by hitting .333 in 117 games. Prior to this season he played just 34 major league games and spent 8 seasons in the minors with 3 organizations. Fred Hutchinson Detroit - 27 year old rookie is 14-14 with a 3.69 era for the Tigers this season. He has not missed a start and has 156 strikeouts compared to just 97 walks. Eddie Morgan Philadephia 31 year old Eddie Morgan spent 11 seasons in the minors before getting a shot with the A's this year. He is hitting .260 with 4 homers and 38 rbi's in 118 games at centerfield. He was released by Cleveland at the start of the season before being picked up by the Athletics. The Cardinals, Pirates and Reds have also cut him lose over the years. He had 21 major league games under his belt prior to this season. Roy Partee Boston - Before a broken wrist ended the Red Sox catcher's season he was hitting .285 with 6 homers and 55 rbi's in 77 games. Parteee spent 3 seasons in the minors before finally getting his shot this year with the big club. NFL ROUND UP - WEEK TWO GIANTS AND EAGLES KEEP ON WINNING The New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles were two of only 3 teams that went 4-0 in the preseason (Minnesota was the third) and now are two of just 7 teams that sit at 2-0 in the regular season. Few are surprised to see the Eagles on such a roll, especially now that RB Harley Mitchell is healthy again, but this is in a rare spot to find the Giants - a franchise that has never played a postseason game. The Eagles topped division rival Washington (1-1) 34-16 while the Giants won their second straight road game 27-20 over Indianapolis (1-1) . Offensively for the Giants no one stands out. They are for the most part a group of castoffs from other clubs. Joey Martin was brought in from Cleveland along with ex-49er Eric Poppinga to compete for the starting job against incumbant Bill Sweeney. Between the 3 of them they have 26 career starts in 17 combined years of play. Poppinga got the nod when Martin went down with a broken foot in the preseason. In two starts he has been decent but not spectacular. For example yesterday he completed 17 of 36 passes for 256 yards and 2 touchdowns while getting picked off once. Running back is the same for the Giants. Malcolm Lake gained over a 1000 yards each of his first 4 seasons in the league but was limited to just 554 yards a year ago and it appeared the ex-Georgia Tech star was wearing down. He has 175 yards in two starts this season so if he can stay healthy, and that is a big if, another 1000 yard season may be in the cards. However, he is nowhere near in the class of some of the marquee backs in the league. You can say the same about the receiver position as the Giants do not have a star player at an offensive skill position. However, the line is solid and the players they do have seem to be playing within themselves, at least so far. Where the Giants do stand out so far this season is on defense. The have been a ballhawking machine and are plus 7 in turnovers after two games. Yesterday, the defense which is being dubbed "The Big Blue Wrecking Crew" by some fans, picked off 3 Issac Burke passes. Cornerback Matt Moore who had 3 interceptions for the Giants in the season opener, did not get a pick this game but he is certainly making an early bid for defensive MVP after he forced 3 Colts fumbles, 2 of which were recovered by his teammates. The Giants were never in total control of the game but did just enough at exactly the right time. It is only week two but there is already a feeling in the Giant clubhouse that things are different this season for the perennial also-rans. The Eagles, on the other hand, are used to winning and in fact expect to win every game. A proud franchise that has missed the playoffs just once in the past 5 years. The Redskins focused their attention on stud running back Harley Mitchell, who missed much of last season with an injury, but was a force in week 1. Mitchell was limited to just 69 yards rushing but he scored two touchdowns on the ground and caught a Ken Neal pass for a third one. Neal was outstanding, completing 30 of 37 for 318 yards as the Redskins dared him to beat them by stacking the line to stop Mitchell. The writing was on the wall for the Redskins when QB Sammy *Baugh was forced to leave the game with a leg injury in the second quarter. Backup Bart Thompson did connect with rookie Dante *Lavelli on a touchdown strike but was generally ineffective. Bob *Seymour was the offensive leader for Washington with 136 yards rushing. BEARS TAME LIONS 41-17 After an opening week victory over Seattle the lowly Detroit Lions were feeling pretty good about themselves. Nothing can put an end to that feeling quicker than a visit from Sid *Luckman and the Chicago Bears. Luckman threw for 347 yards and 4 touchdowns while running back George *McAfee ran for 113 yards in the Bears 41-17 mauling of Detroit. Young Detroit QB Bob *Waterfield, who looked so poised a week ago, was confused all game by the Bears defense and completed just 15 of 35 passes for 137 yards. MCDONNELL A MIRACLE WORKER? BRONCOS 2-0 The Coaches graveyard that is Denver may have finally met it's Ghostbuster. Ryan McDonnell, the 4th coach in 5 years, suddenly has people talking football in Denver where the Broncos are 2-0 for the first time in franchise history. 17 fourth quarter points including a big interception return for a touchdwon from Edgerrin Newberry gave Denver a 23-17 win over division rival Kansas City (1-1). A divisional win on the road is something almost unheard of in Denver. Ulish Groce passed for nearly 300 yards as the Chiefs controlled the game for the most part but Denver's bend but don't break defense repeatedly did just enough to hold the Chiefs until Groce made a mistake that Newberry made him pay for. BUFFALO AND NEW ENGLAND BOTH GO TO 2-0 IN AFC EAST The New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills both improved to 2-0 with victories yesterday. Three interceptions helped the Pats top the New York Jets(1-1) 13-3 in a tight defensive struggle. Steve *Van Buren ran for over 100 yards for the Jets but his fumble on the New England 4 yard line in the second quarter cost New York a chance for it's only touchdown of the game. The Bills, with backup QB Rod Bird at the helm, easily disposed of Minnesota (1-1) by a 24-3 count. Bills running back Michael Williams was a workhorse, gaining 131 yards on the ground and adding another 32 yards receiving. He also scored a pair of touchdowns. Buffalo's defense was all over Minnesota signal caller Stephen Pagel, sacking him 4 times and forcing 2 interceptions. In other action The Tennessee Titans improved to 2-0 with a 31-16 victory over visiting Jacksonville (0-2). Tennessee QB Manfred Gayle tossed 4 touchdown passes. Tyson Pittman's 85 yard punt return in the fourth quarter lifted New Orleans (1-1) past Tampa 24-23. The hardluck Bucs have two losses by a combined total of 3 points. Running back Todd Berger had another strong game for the Saints, gaining 132 yards rushing and scoring the games first touchdown. The Rams got their first win, beating hapless Seattle 27-10. It was another bad day for Seahawks first round pick Marion *Motley. The back gained just 19 yards on 12 carries before being benched. Rookie Elmer *Angsman from Notre Dame gained 87 yards and scored the game's only touchdown as Pittsburgh (1-1) beat Cleveland (0-2) in a tight-defensive battle 10-6. The only touchdown came on the opening drive of the second half, a drive that was prolonged because of an unnecessary roughness penalty on Browns DB Bob Holt. The Packers benched QB Cecil *Isbell after he threw 3 interceptions in the week one win over San Francisco. Instead rookie Jordan Montana, a 3rd round pick from Stanford, was named the starter for this weeks game in Miami. Montana completed 15-of -30 passes for 207 yards and 1 touchdown. He was also intercepted once in the game and that pick was returned for a touchdown that made the score 21-14 Dolphins. Miami would add a pair of field goals and win their first of the season 27-14. It will be interesting to see who is lined up at QB next week for the Packers? The Dallas Cowboys (1-1) overcame a 10-0 first half deficiet and rebounded to win the battle of Texas 24-13 over hometown Houston. Rick Streets kicked a 55 yard field goal as time expired to lift the Atlanta Falcons to a 10-7 victory over the winless Baltimore Ravens. The defending league champions had led 7-0 since early in the second quarter before the Falcons tied the game on a 2 yard pass from Arnie *Herber to TE Brian Harden with just under 6 minutes to play. Mac Wiley and Johndale Rogers each returned an interception for a touchdown as Cincinnati (1-1) beat the 1-1 Carolina Panthers 24-6. Bengals starting QB Bud Rutledge was still nursing an injury but looked much sharper this week, completing 21 of 33 passes for 158 yards and one touchdown. Keith Meade ran for 120 yards in a losing cause for Carolina. Arizona surprised Oakland 24-17 as both teams go to 1-1 on the season while San Francisco beat San Diego 21-17. They also each go to 1-1. VILLANOVA SINKS MERCHANT MARINE AS COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON OPENS Fourth year head coach Jordan Olivar had the Villanova Wildcats ready to go in the season opener. The Wildcats thumped Key's Point Merchant Marine Acadamy 37-3 in the first game of the 1946 college football season. Two other games were played out west with both involving schools from the Border Conference. New Mexico State beat Beaumont Hospital 26-6 while the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks were felled by Williams Field 14-6. The games take on a little more meaning this week as 5 of the top 20 are in action. Number 1 ranked Army hosts Villanova, 9th ranked Texas entertains Missouri, number 10 Illinois visits the University of Pittsburgh, 17th ranked Tulsa travels to Wichita State in a Missouri Valley Conference matchup while number 20 Indiana is home to Cincinnati. CANADIAN FOOTBALL ACTION The Toronto Indians are a perfect 4-0 in Ontario Rugby Football Association action after a come from behind 14-13 win over the Sarnia Imperials at Norm Perry Park in Sarnia. The Hamilton Wildcats are 3-1 and in second place after blanking winless Windsor 17-0. In the other contest a late field goal gave the Ottawa Trojans their first victory of the season, 18-16 over the Toronto Balmy Beach squad. In the Interprovincial league the Toronto Argos blanked Hamilton 24-0 while Ottawa upended Montreal 23-14. The lone game out west this week saw Calgary top Winniepg 21-14. The Stampeders and Blue Bombers are tied atop the Western standings with 2-1 records. continued

NHL PREVIEW - BOSTON BRUINS
The NHL season is just 6 weeks away and in order to get everyone up to speed TSN will preview one of the six clubs each week. First up the Boston Bruins. The Bruins are the league's longest running American team as they joined the NHL under the guidance of Art Ross in 1924. The Boston Garden opened in 1928 and a year later the Bruins won their first Stanley Cup, beating the Rangers in the finals. The Bruins finished second to Montreal during the regular season a year ago and after beating Detroit in five games in the semi finals, the Bruins lost in 5 to Montreal for the Stanley Cup. Here is the expected lineup for Boston: GOAL - Two-time Vezina Trophy winner Frank Brimsek is back between the pipes for Boston. The Eveleth, Minnesota native is one of the few American born players in the National League. Nicknamed Mr. Zero because of his penchant for shutting out the opposition, Brimsek has arguably the best glove hand in the game although he is not quite the same goalie he was before missing two seasons due to the war. DEFENSE - BABE PRATT - Scored a record for defensemen 57 points two seasons ago and won the Hart Trophy as league MVP. Pratt was suspended by NHL President Red Dutton for most of last season for betting on games. He was reinstated after there was no proof he bet in games involving his own team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs dealt him to Boston in the offseason. The Manitoba native's son Tracy will eventually play in the NHL also. FERN FLAMAN - a hard-nosed stay at home defenseman from Saskatchewan. Just 19 he has played 2 games for the Bruins over the last two season. JACK CRAWFORD - The Dublin, Ontario native is best known as the only player in the league to wear a helmet. He wears it not for safety but rather for cosmetic reasons - to hide the fact he is very bald. A steady defenseman for the Bruins for nearly a decade. MURRAY HENDERSON - A Toronto native, Henderson joined the Bruins last year after playing for the Royal Candian Air Force team. He had 15 points in 48 games as a rookie. PAT EGAN - Entering his 7th year in the league, the former NY American and Detroit Red Wing joined the Bruins in 1942. The Blackie, Alberta native missed the 43-44 season when he joined the armed forces but scored 18 points in 41 games a year ago. FORWARDS - MILT SCHMIDT, WOODY DUMART and BOBBY BAUER - It makes sense to keep all 3 of these players together as they became famous as the Kraut Line. However, during and after World War II the line was renamed the Kitchener Kids after the Ontario city all three grew up in. Schmidt is the center of the line and the team captain. Dumart was a flashy leftwinger while Bauer was a crafty rightwinger. All three teamed up on Kitchener's Memorial Cup winner of 1935 before moving up to the Bruins where they would win Stanley Cups in 1939 and 1941. Each of the 3 joined the Canadian Air Force in 1942 and returned to the Bruins last season. BILL COWLEY - Veteran winger from Bristol, Quebec who was NHL MVP in 1941 and 1943. JOE CARVETH - Just acquired from Detroit in exchange for Roy Conacher. The Regina native had 17 goals for the Red Wings last season and will likely play on the second line with Cowley and Gallinger. DON GALLINGER - A swift skating center from tiny Port Colborne, Ontario, Gallinger had 40 points for the Bruins a year ago after, like many other Bruins joining the RCAF for the war. BEP GUIDOLIN - Originally made the Bruins in 1942 as a 16 year old. Spent two seasons in Boston before joining the war effort. He returned to the NHL last year and had 32 points in 50 games. The Thorold, Ontario native would eventually be blacklisted after fighting for a players union in the 1950's. Later he would coach in the NHL and also be Bobby Orr's junior coach at Oshawa. KENNY SMITH - Originally from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Smith scored 79 points in 26 games to lead Oshawa to the Memorial Cup in 1944. He scored 20 goals for the Bruins as a rookie the following season but scored just twice in 23 games a year ago. JACK MCGILL - An aggressive forward, McGill was brought in during wartime to make up for the player shortage. He had 6 goals and 14 assists in 46 games last year. MARK MARQUESS - 20 year old led the Moose Jaw Canucks to the Memorial Cup finals a year ago. He will be making his Bruins debut this season. Next week's preview takes a look at the Chicago Black Hawks. MARSHALL TOO MUCH FOR YAROSZ IN LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT TITLE BOUT Lloyd Marshall proved to be too powerful for Tommy Yarosz in the World Lightheavyweight Boxing title match at the Boston Gardens this week. Marshall sent Yarosz to the canvas with a powerful uppercut in round 1 but Monaca, Pennsylvania native recovered and actually started carrying the fight to Marshall. Yarosz was clearly the busier of the two fighters but every now and again Marshall would connect with a powerful blow. In round 9 the final damage was done when Yarosz leaned into an uppercut and caught it right on the button. A couple more quick punches from Marshall and it was lights out for Tommy Yarosz. With the victory, Marshall improves to 22-4-1 and claims the title. On the undercard Archie Moore won a unanimous decision over Jimmy Bivins to move into the number one contender position. One other Lightheavyweight bout was staged last week. In London, England Freddie Mills claimed the European Title with a first round knockout of German Adolph Heuser. Here are the top ranked lightheavyweights. 1- Lloyd Marshall WORLD CHAMPION 22-4-1 Cleveland, Ohio 2- Archie Moore 31-2 Benoit, Mississippi 3- Billy Conn 27-1-2 Pittsburgh 4 - Henry Hall 19-13-3 New Orleans 5 - Tommy Yarosz 26-7-2 Monaca, Pa 6 - Jimmy Bivins 28-3 Cleveland, Ohio 7 - Harry Mathews 28-3 Emmett, Idaho 8 - Bob Murphy 23-7 Flagler, Colorado 9 - Anton Christoforidis 26-7 Greece 10- Jimmy Slade 23-6-1 New York City FLYWEIGHT POST WAR TITLE FIGHT ENDS IN A DRAW A thrilling 15 round bout to determine the post WWII Flyweight Boxing Champion of the World ended in a majority draw between Little Dado of the Phillipines and Britian's Teddy Gardner. Since the title is vacant after boxing virtually ceased to exist during the war, there is no champion in the division at the moment. Dado and Gardner will fight again at the end of October in a effort to determine who will be crowned champion. Despite being the Main Event in the card at Toyko, Japan the Dado-Gardner contest took a backseat with the fans who were there mainly to see Yoshio Shirai and Speedy Akira battle. The two Japanesse fighters also battled to a draw with one judge giving the victory to each fighter and the referee scoring it as even. One other flyweight contest, this one in London England had Jackie Patterson score a 9th round TKO of Rinty Monaghan to claim the British title. Here are the top 10 ranked fighters in the Flyweight Division 1- Little Dado 19-2-2 Phillippines 2- Speedy Akira 15-3-2 Yokohama, Japan 3 - Teddy Gardner 15-2-1 West Hartlepool, England 4 - Yoshio Shirai 11-2-2 Tokyo, Japan 5 - Jackie Paterson 19-2 Ayrshire, Scotland 6 - Black Pico 15-2 Cuba 7 - Rinty Monaghan 16-3-1 Belfast, Ireland 8 - Vic Herman 13-3-2 Glasgow, Scotland 9 - Peter Kane 16-2-1 Liverpool, England 10 -Louis Skena 17-4-1 Nice, France The top ranked American is Dado Marino from Honolulu who is ranked 16th with a 10-3 record. PENNANT RACES HEATING UP
PIRATES AND INDIANS CLING TO LEADS WITH 2 WEEKS TO PLAY The Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Indians each moved another week closer to a World Series berth. The Pirates lead on Cincinnati remains at 2 games while in the American League Cleveland lost a half game off it's cushion but the Tribe still lead second place Boston by 2.5 games. Pittsburgh won just 3 of 7 games during the week but two of the wins were over the second place Reds, who went 2-3 last week. Bill Norman's 2-run triple in the first inning of Wednesday's game was all the offense Ken Heintzelman (17-12, 3.09) needed to give the hometown Pirates a 5-1 victory. Thursday was an awful day for the Reds and may ultimately prove to be the day that cost them a shot at their first pennant since 1926. Tony Cuccinello and Arky Vaughan each had 2 rbi's in the Pirates 7-1 win that moved Pittsburgh 3 games ahead of the Reds. Cincinnati did get one game back over the weekend but the Reds are running out of time and will not play against the Pirates again this season. This week the Reds have 4 games in Chicago before playing a 2 game set over the weekend against the Giants in New York. The Pirates are off to St Louis for a 4 game set and finish the week with 2 games in Boston. The two teams remain on the road for the final week with Pittsburgh playing 3 in Chicago before finishing with 4 against the Giants while the Reds have 3 in St Louis and 4 at Boston. In the American League the Boston Red Sox took two of three games from Cleveland last week but what they really needed was a sweep. In the opener Mel Amada and Ted Williams, with his league leading 27th, homered to give Boston a 6-4 victory. Cleveland took the next game 8-1 as Bill Lohrman pitched a 3-hitter. Lohrman won both of his starts this week and was named American League player of the week. On Sunday, the Red Sox stayed in the race with a 4-2 win as Bob Bowman (19-9, 3.07) handed Tribe ace Steve Gromek (24-11, 2.95) his first loss in 9 decisions. This week the Red Sox have 4 games against Philadelphia and 3 in St Louis. Next week they are on the road for 3 games in Washington before finishing up with 4 against the Yankees. The Indians play 3 in Washington starting today before having an off day Thursday and wrapping up the week with a 3-game set at Yankee Stadium. Next week the season finishes for Cleveland with 3 games in St Louis and 4 at Philadelphia. Realistically if the Red Sox are going to make a run at their first Pennant since 1922 they will need to do so this week while the Indians have a couple of tough opponents in the Sens and Yanks. OTHER NOTES: Jack Kraus of Brooklyn was named National League player of the week after going 2-0 with an era of 0.50. He is 11-17 with a 4.02 era this season. As mentioned above, Cleveland's Bill Lohrman claimed the AL honour. NFL WEEK 3 BREAK UP THE BRONCOS - DENVER ONE OF JUST 4 UNBEATEN TEAMS Three weeks into the 1946 season and their are just 4 teams with perfect records. The Bears, of course with Sid *Luckman and an explosive offense. The Eagles, easy to accept with RB Harley Mitchell healthy once again. The Bills are a mild surprise but they are a solid team. Finally the Denver Broncos round out the list of 3-0 clubs. The Broncos? Wait a minute. How can they be 3-0? Denver beat the previously unbeaten New England Patriots 18-15 yesterday to stay unbeaten for new coach Ryan McDonnell. The Broncos have been finding ways to win football games. Running back Oscar Hartings gained 118 yards and scored a touchdown. QB Jay Cason, who was picked off 30 times a year ago, is making better decisions. However, the real improvement is on defense where the Broncos have drastically improved from last year. DE Kevin Merkins already has 6 sacks after getting just 4 all of last season. Rookie LB Rock Roberts is second on the team in tackles and has given the Broncos the run stopper they needed inside and the secondary, led by Edgerrrin Newberry who had an interception for the second straight game, is playing much better. In New Orleans all anyone could talk about was Sid *Luckman and how the Chicago Bears QB may be enjoying the best season of his career. Luckman increased his QB rating to 144.8 after completing 20 of 25 passes for 361 yards and 4 touchdowns in a 38-6 thumping of the Saints. The Buffalo Bills got a last minute 31 yard field goal from Ken Wilkins to beat Oakland 13-10. Buffalo was held to under 200 yards of offense but a 24 yard fumble return for a touchdown by CB Glen Fletcher and a pair of field goals was all the offense the Bills needed. 5 Oakland turnovers proved all the difference in the world in this game. The Raiders did not manage much offense themselves as RB Johnny Cushing was held to 56 yards rushing but he did have 7 receptions. In Seattle, Harley Mitchell ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns plus made 7 catches for 83 yards to lead Philadelphia past the hometown Seahawks 24-13. It is still far too early to call Marion *Motley a bust but the 4th overall pick has gained just 96 yards on 41 carries and his getting very frustrated with the Seahawks offensive line. He was limited to 17 yards on 12 carries yesterday. In other action: 3 turnovers led to a pair of defensive touchdowns as San Francisco surprised the Giants in New York 31-16. The Giants, who had been winning games with turnovers prior to this week, ran into problems early as QB Eric Poppinga was picked off twice in the first half leading to 10 Niners points. The Giants defense, a strong point to start the season, did a good job keeping San Francisco in check but it was a case of the 49ers getting very good field position to start drives far too often. The loss leaves the Giants at 2-1 and improves San Francisco to the same record. Tampa got it's first win of the season 31-24 over Detroit but it came at a price. The Bucs had 2 more quarterbacks injured in the game and have lost 3 signal callers in two weeks. Last week starter Paul Christman broke his foot and is out for two months. This week's starter John Jordan, a rookie from UCLA, tore up his knee and is out for a month. Jordan had a great game in his pro debut prior to the injury, completing 23 out of 37 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns. Stephen Quayle completed just one pass before going down with an ankle injury leaving 4th stringer Al Wiley to mop up. Next week's bye could not have come at a better time for the Bucs. In Green Bay, Rick Streets third field goal of the day, a 41 yarder in overtime, gave Atlanta a 38-35 win over the hometown Packers. Sammy *Baugh and Wayne *Miller hooked up on two 4th quarter touchdown strikes to lift Washington past St Louis 29-16. Arizona built a quick 21-0 lead and then hung on to beat Dallas 21-14. Doug Schroeder completed 29 of 38 passes for 224 yards and both Dallas touchdowns but was stopped just short in a desperate last second drive to tie the game. Arizona SS Booker Hasselback brought down Cowboys receiver Willie Nelson at the Cardinals 5 yard line as time expired. Hasselback had 10 tackles to give him a league leading total of 35 on the season. Vaughn Diedrick and Jonathon Brown connected on a 41 yard pass play midway through the 4th quarter to give Houston it's first win, 20-13 over Cincinnati. The Bengals fall to 1-2. Bruce Jones ran for 156 yards and scored 2 touchdowns as Kansas City beat the winless Jets 17-9. San Diego is 2-1 after Buford DeRonde kicked 3 field goals in a 9-7 win against the Dolphins in Miami. Justin Jackson tossed a pair of 4th quarter touchdowns as Jacksonville rallied to beat Pittsburgh 30-26 leaving both teams with 1-2 records. RB Keith Musso gained 90 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Jags. Pittsburgh QB Tom Friede had another awful day, completing just 14 of 33 passes and getting picked off twice. Friede's 34.0 QB rating is the lowest among all starters in the league. Backs Tony Ellis and Art Basnight combined for 156 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns as Cleveland earned it's first win of the season, knocking off previously unbeaten Tennessee 27-24. Titans QB Manfred Gayle threw 3 touchdown passes but was picked off twice. The defending champs finally got a win as Baltimore beat Indianapolis 15-10. There was very litlte offense out of the Ravens once again but Fabien Montgomery did run for 91 yards and a touchdown. A first quarter safety and a pair of Leonard Allen field goals rounded out the scoring for the Ravens. After throwing 4 interceptions in the last 2 games the Minnesota Vikings benched QB Stephen Pagel. Rookie Jim Elliott, a second round pick out of South Carolina, got the starting nod and completed 27 of 34 passes for 185 yards in his pro debut as the Vikings improved to 2-1 with a 21-14 win over Carolina. COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUND UP ARMY MAKES SHORT WORK OF VILLANOVA Number 1 ranked Army had little trouble with Villanova as the college football schedule had it first full week of games. Army build up a 13-0 half time lead and increased it in the third quarter to 25-0. The final score was 25-7. In our weekly notebook for each conference we will preview the upcoming games and highlight some of the top players. One thing to keep in mind is that the conference schedules were far less rigid in 1946 than they are today. In most conferences teams did not play a similiar number of games within the conference. For example in the PCC teams would play as few as 4 or as many as 8 in conference games, the SEC between 5 and 7 and in the Western either 6 or 7 games against conference foes. In this the first installment of the conference notebook we will simply familiarize you with the conference allignments. BIG 6 The Big 6 Conference is the forerunner of today's Big 12. Teams include Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. BORDER A lower tier conference with 9 schools from the southwest: Arizona, Arizona State, Hardin-Simmons, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, UTEP, Texas Tech and West Texas A&M MVC The Missouri Valley Conference consists of Drake, Oklahoma State, St Louis, Tulsa and Wichita State. MOUNTAIN STATESThe Mountain States Conference contains schools from the Rockies including Brigham Young, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Utah, Utah State and Wyoming. PCC Now known as the Pac 10 the Pacific Coast Conference in 1946 consisted of California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington and Washington State. SEC The Southeastern Conference looked quite similiar in 1946 to how it looks today. 1946 members are Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. SOUTHERN A forerunner of the ACC, the Southern Conference is the largest conference with 16 members. North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Maryland, Duke, Virginia Tech and Clemson are joined by William & Mary, Richmond, Davidson, George Washington, VMI, Citadel, Furman and Washington &Lee. SWC The Southwest Conference contains Arkansas, Baylor, Rice, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M and TCU WESTERN Know today as the Big 10 the Western Conference features 9 teams: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin. Missing from the current Big 10 lineup are Michigan State and Penn State which currently are independants. PLAYOFFS ALL BUT SET IN WESTERN CANADIAN FOOTBALL The Winnipeg Blue Bombers bombed Saskatchewan 31-0 in Western Canadian Football action. It was the third straight loss for the hapless Roughriders, who have been outscored 58-7 on the season. The win moves the Bombers 2 points ahead of Calgary but the Stampeders have a game in hand. At this rate the Stampeders and Bombers will have playoff spots wrapped up by the end of the month. Things are a little tighter in the East. In the Interprovincial League the Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argos each won on Saturday and share top spot with 4 points, one ahead of the Ottawa Roughriders. Ottawa was beaten 24-14 by the Argos in Toronto while the Alouettes outscored last place Hamilton 17-3. In the ORFU the first place Toronto Indians and second place Hamilton Wildcats each had the week off. Two games were played yesterday with the Toronto Balmy Beach club blasting Windsor 42-14 while the Ottawa Trojans scored a late touchdown to top Sarnia 24-17. continued

BOXING BEAT
HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP LOUIS SURVIVES A SCARE AND KO'S MAURIELLO 11th ranked Tami Mauriello nearly stole the Heavyweight Championship of the World from Joe Louis but the Brown Bomber recovered to successfully defend his title before a sold out fight crowd at Madison Square Garden. Louis looked a little out of shape coming into the fight while it appeared Bronx native Mauriello was in the best shape of his career. Mauriello landed a couple of blows early in round one before Louis hurt the challenger with a devasting hook. Louis reigned down punches for the rest of the round and Mauriello was lucky to escape on his feet. Louis began round 2 right where he left off round one and had Mauriello in big trouble but somehow he could not quite finish him off. With Mauriello's left eye nearly swollen shut, Louis looked confident he would end the fight in round 3 and he worked on Mauriello's eye right away. However, Louis must have been a little over-confident and he opened himself up at the same instant Mauriello put everything he had into an uppercut. Louis stepped into the full brunt of the blow and found himself on the canvas with the referee counting over him. Louis barely struggled to his feet as the count reached 9 and he spent the rest of the round hiding from Mauriello as he tried to regain his bearings. If Mauriello had anything left at that point he would surely have been the new champion but he could not muster any sort of an attack to finish off the champ. The crowd was going nuts as Louis someone stayed alive enough to regroup. Louis got his bearings back between rounds and early in the fourth he stunned Mauriello with a straight right. Mauriello could do nothing except try and aviod the champ. He was unsuccessful as Louis came after him, although just a little more cautiously than he did the previous round. Finally with 10 seconds to go in the round Louis found an opening and landed a solid uppercut that floored Mauriello. With rules prohibiting the bell from saving a fighter it was all over for Mauriello and Louis remained Heavyweight Champion of the World. With the victory Joe Louis is now 8-0 while Mauriello's record falls to 16-4-1. Louis is expected to next defend his title in January or February likely against 4th ranked Nathan Mann (18-4-1) at the Olympia in his hometown of Detroit. EDITOR'S NOTE - I have just started getting into TBCB but this was far and away the most exciting bout I have witnessed. I thought for sure Mauriello was going to win it in the third round. If you have even a moderate interest in boxing you should do yourself a favour and get this game if you haven't already. As I mentioned early I am barely a casual boxing fan but the game is extremely entertaining. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE NHL SEASON PREVIEW - Part 2 THE CHICAGO BLACK HAWKS On 25 September 1926 Major Frederic McLaughlin, a coffee millionaire, invested $200,000 to purchase the Portland Rosebuds of the Western Hockey League. The Major promplty renamed the team after a unit he had served with during World War I, the Blackhawk Field Gun Battalion. The battalion itself had been named after a famous Indian Chief in the Midwest during the early nineteenth century. The Chicago Black Hawks played their initial NHL game on 17 November 1926, at the now defunct Chicago Coliseum. On 15 December 1929 the team played its first game in historic Chicago Stadium. Famous for its Barton pipe organ, the Stadium housed the loudest and most loyal fans in the hockey world. The Hawks won the Stanley Cup in 1934 and again in 1938. Last season the Hawks finished 3rd but were eliminated in the semi-finals in 4 straight games by eventual Stanley Cup Champion Montreal. Here is the Black Hawks roster for this season: GOAL PAUL BIBEAULT - Montreal native has played goal for the Canadiens, Toronto and Boston before joining the Black Hawks this season. EMILE FRANCIS - Later to be well known as a Ranger coach and executive, Francis will be making his NHL debut this season. Nicknamed "The Cat" because of his amazing reflexes, Francis also pioneered the use of a valuable piece of goalie equipment. During the 1945-46 season in the minors Francis, who was an avid baseball player and manager, began experimenting with a first baseman's glove by adding a cuff to protect the rest of his hand and wrist. This innovation was the prototype of the present day catching glove used by netminders all over the world. DEFENSE: BILL GADSBY - A 20 year old rookie from Calgary, Gadsby will be making his NHL debut. He would play over 1200 NHL games in his career but never win a Stanley Cup. He became as famous for his cuts as his play. He reputedly recieved more than 600 stitches to his face in his career. He would also coach Detroit for a brief period in the late sixties. LEO REISE JR. - When Leo made his NHL debut last season for the Hawks it became the first time a father and son had both made the NHL. The elder Reise played 8 seasons for Hamilton, the NY Rangers and NY Americans in the 1920's. JACK JACKSON - From Windsor, Jackson will be making his NHL debut this season. A gifted scorer in the minors Jackson did not have the same success in the NHL and would spend just this one season in the big leagues. RALPH NATTRASS - The Gainsboro, Saskatchewan native will be making his NHL debut this season. In 1950 he would be traded to Montreal but rather than report to the Canadiens he went into the auto sales business. EDDIE WARES - Wares, from Calgary, begin his NHL career with the Rangers in 1936. He would be a regular with Detroit from 1940 until he joined the Navy in 1943. Upon his return he was dealt by the Wings to Chicago where he would pick up 15 points in 45 games last season. FORWARDS: DOUG BENTLEY - a 3 time first team all-star, the winger from Delisle, Saskatchewan led the NHL in scoring in 1942-43. He had 40 points in 36 games a year ago. MAX BENTLEY- Center of the Pony Line (with his brother Doug and Bill Mosienko) he became the first Chicago player to win the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP. He won the Award last season after scoring 31 goals in 47 games. Known as the 'Dipsy Doodle Dandy from Delisle" because of his fancy skating and superb stickhandling. BILL MOSIENKO - The Winnipeg native joined the Black Hawks in 1941. He was one of the smallest players in the league but also one of the quickest. He scored 48 points in 40 games a year ago and won the Lady Byng award for gentlemanly play. He would eventually become best known for scoring the fastest 3 goals in NHL history - 21 seconds in a game against the Rangers. ADAM BROWN - A native of Scotland Brown emigrated to Canada in his youth. He won a Stanley Cup with Detroit in 1943 before being dealt to the Hawks this offseason. He had 31 points in 40 games with Detroit last year. ALEX KALETA - The Cranmore, Alberta native missed 3 season serving in WWII otherwise he would have likely been much better known. He scored 46 points last season. One story has it that the term "hat trick" was allegedly coined when a Toronto haberdasher named Sammy Taft told Kaleta that he would give him the hat that he had been eyeing if Alex would score 3 goals in that night's game. Kaleta did so, and the term has been used ever since. CLINT SMITH - Began his career with the Rangers in 1936 and was a key contributer to their 1940 Cup winning team. In 1943-44 he set a record for assists with 49. A two time winner of the Lady Byng Award he is rarely penalized. GEORGE GEE - Stratford, Ontario native made his NHl debut with the Hawks last year and collected 29 points in 35 games. JOHN MARIUCCI - The Minnesota native helped the Golden Gophers to an NCAA football championsjip as well as being an All-American Hockey player. He joined the Black Hawks in 1941 but missed two seasons during the war. A solid defensive forward Mariucci would eventually coach the 1956 US Olympic Hockey team. TOM FOWLER - Winnipeg native spent last season with Kansas City of the USHL. He will be making his NHL debut this year. RED HAMILL - Began his NHL career with Boston and won a Stanley Cup with the Bruins before coming to Chicago in 1942. Had 37 points last season after missing 2 years while in the Army. HANK BLADE - Long time minor leaguer from Peterborough, Ontario will be making his NHL debut this season. STATS AND STANDINGS AMERICAN LEAGUE Code:

NATIONAL LEAGUE PENNANT UP FOR GRABS
PIRATES LEAD REDS BY 1 GAME WITH 7 TO PLAY The Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds may well go to the final day of the season before it is known which of the two clubs will make the World Series. With each club having 7 games remaining, the Bucs cling to a 1-game lead. Both of the clubs are on the road for the final week with Cincinnati playing 3 against 4th place St Louis and closing with 4 against last place Boston. The Pirates have 3 against 5th place Chicago and finish with 4 against the 7th place Giants in New York. Tight finishes are nothing new in the National League as last season the Cubs needed a 1-game playoff to beat St Louis, while 9 years ago the Cardinals topped the Pirates in a 1 game playoff and the year before that it was Chicago over Brooklyn in an extra game. In all, on 8 different occassions the National League needed to play an extra game to determine it's champion. Could the 9th be a week away? Here is a day-by-day recap for the NL contenders from last week: Monday - The Reds lost 7-2 in Chicago while Pittsburgh had the day off. Tuesday - Both clubs lost. The Pirates were beaten 5-1 in St Louis while the Cubs topped the Reds 4-3. Wednesday - a thrilling day for both teams. Grady Hatton delivers a 10th inning rbi double to give Cincinnati a 2-1 win in Chicago. Johnny Hutching pitched 8 innings of 6 hit ball in the game. Meanwhile, in St Louis the Cardinals did the Reds a favour by coming back not once, but twice against the Pirates. First the Cards torched Bucs starter Preacher Roe for 4 runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and then after Pittsburgh scored once in the top of the 11th, the Cardinals scored twice in the bottom half for an 8-7 win. That allowed Cincinnati to creep within 1.5 games of the first place Pirates. Thursday - Cliff Melton pitched a 5-hit shutout as Pittsburgh beat St Louis 2-0 while the Reds lost 6-2 to the Cubs to drop back 2.5 games. Friday -The Reds are off while Pittsburgh gets 3 hits including a 3-run homer from rookie Ralph Kiner in an 8-2 win over St Louis. The Pirates are now a full 3 games ahead of Cincinnati. Saturday - The Reds stay alive as Johnny Mize drives in 3 runs in a 6-3 win over the Giants. Even better news for Cincinnati is the fact that the lowly Boston Braves got a 4-hit shutout performance from Ken Holcombe and they blank Pittsburgh 3-0. It is now a 2 game lead for the Pirates. Sunday - Arnold Carter gets his 17th win of the season as Cincinnati beats the Giants 5-1 to sweep the 2 game series. It is also a sweep in Boston as Rudy York's 20th homer of the season snaps a 2-2 tie in the 8th inning and gives the Braves a 3-2 win over the Pirates. Pittsburgh sees its lead shrink to 1 game. Brooklyn has also stayed alive, but just barely, in the pennant race. The Dodgers went 4-1 last week and are now 3 games back. Brooklyn has 3 games at the Polo Grounds vs the Giants and 4 in Chicago to finish the season and if both Pittsburgh and Cincinnati collapse could have a shot although it is highly unlikely. Ernie White of the Cardinals was named player of the week after he went 2-0. White beat Pittsburgh 5-1 on a 3-hit complete game Tuesday and then shut out Brooklyn 4-0 on an 8 hitter yesterday. INDIANS CLOSE TO CLINCHING AMERICAN LEAGUE PENNANT The Cleveland Indians are a step closer to clinching the American League Pennant for the third time in 6 years. The Indians have a 3 game lead on second place Boston with each club having 7 games remaining. Cleveland has the easier schedule with 3 games in St Louis and 4 at Philadelphia while the Red Sox play 3 in Washington and finish in New York with 4 against the Yankees. After leading in July only to have a terrible collapse in August it is a very dissappointing season for the Washington Senators. However, then can be proud of rookie Les Fleming who appears poised to win the batting crown. Fleming, hitting .333 after Sunday's game leads Boston's Ted Williams by .014 with a week to play. Williams with 28 homers will lead in that category while his Boston teammate Bade Young is number one in rbi's with 97. Cleveland pitcher Bill Lohrman (18-8, 2.28) was named American League player of the week for the second time in a row. Lohrman threw a 2-hit shutout in New York and beat Washington 9-1 in his two starts this week. Hank Greenberg of Detroit joined the 2000 hit club on Friday. The 35 year old doubled off of Washington's Red Barrett for the milestone knock. NFL WEEK 4 BRONCOS IMPROVE TO 4-0 The Denver Broncos just keep on finding ways to win. The Broncos improved to 4-0 with a 30-28 victory over the slumping Oakland Raiders despite a lackluster effort from QB Jay Cason. Cason threw for 253 yards and a pair of touchdowns but was picked off three times and those three int's led directly to 17 Oakland points. Still the Broncos won the game. The key to stopping Oakland is to shut down league MVP Johnny Cushing. Cushing rushed for 116 yards and caught 7 passes for 82 yet still the Broncos won the game. Broncos running back Oscar Hartings gained 82 yards and the Denver defense used it's bend but don't break philosphy to perfection in handing the hard-luck Raiders their 3rd straight loss. LIONS IMPROVE TO 2-2 WITH OT WIN Another big step in the maturation process of QB Bob *Waterfield as the Detroit Lions beat Minnesota 26-20 in overtime. Waterfield completed 23-of-38 passes for 314 yards and despite being sacked 5 times and pressured all game he did not get picked off. He was at his best on the overtime drive when after some terrible work by the offensive line he was facing a 3rd and 24 near midfield. Waterfield hung in the pocket despite being sacked on each of the two previous plays and found his tight end Don Flugence for 30 yards. The next play he completed a nifty 14 yarder to running back Fred Johnson that gave the Lions first and goal on the Minnesota three yard line. Two plays later Johnson was in the endzone and the Lions had their second win. Detroit is still a long way from challenging the Chicago Bears for division supremacy but with Waterfield the Lions appear to be on the right track. The Bears ran their record to 4-0 after a 30-17 victory over the visiting Green Bay Packers. Sid *Luckman threw for 306 yards and George *McAfee ran for 113 as the Bears offense had another big day. SECOND HALF COMEBACK KEEPS EAGLES PERFECT The Philadelphia Eagles spotted Dallas a 31-14 lead before they roared backed with 20 unaswered points to beat the Cowboys 34-31 and run the record to 4-0. QB Ken Neal, who has been alternating with Doug Bass, completed 15 of 24 passes for 206 yards. The Eagles did suffer a scare when often-injured running back Harley Mitchell left the game with an ankle problem. Mitchell had gained 68 yards before being sidelined. He was replaced quite nicely by Jimmy Berton who gained 55 yards on the ground. Mitchell is expected to be ready to play next week. Raymond Cash had a huge day for the Cowboys, rushing for 141 yards and two touchdowns The Washington Redskins handed the New York Giants their second straight loss. Sammy *Baugh threw a pair of touchdown passes and Vai Logan returned a punt for a major in the 'Skins 27-6 victory. Bob *Seymour rushed for 117 yards against a Giants defense that looked so good to start the season but has struggled the last two weeks. NINERS WIN THIRD IN A ROW Quentin Morton threw a pair of 4th quarter touchdown passes to give San Francisco a come from behind 17-10 win over St Louis. The 1-3 Rams had dominated the game defensively for the first 3 quarters as LB Matt Truluck had 11 tackles and rookie lineman Wandy Pugh recorded his first 3 NFL sacks. Seattle finally got it's first victory topping Arizona 23-13. Nicky Papac picked off a Tony Marsalis pass and raced 30 yards for the go-ahead touchdown in the key play of the game for the Seahawks. Rookie RB Marion *Motley had his best game of the season, gaining 55 yards on the ground and catching 3 passes for 24 yards. PATS AND BILLS BOTH 3-1 AFTER NEW ENGLAND OT WIN A 5 yard pass from Terry Stephens to Brandon Hastings in overtime gave the New Englans Patriots a 19-13 win over Buffalo and put both teams in a tie for top spot in the AFC East. Running back Dick Todd scored a pair of touchdowns for the Pats in a game that was dominated by both defenses. The Dolphins improved to 2-2 with a 27-13 victory over the winless New York Jets. Miami RB Stacey Jolley shreaded the Jets defense for 186 yards and two touchdowns. In other action: Tennessee blanked Indianapolis 27-0 as Manfred Gayle threw a pair of touchdown passes and Chris Brezina returned an interception for a touchdwon. The Titans lead the AFC South with a 3-1 record. Keith Musso ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns as Jacksonville improved to 2-2 with a 26-10 victory over the Houston Texans. The Jags suffered a blow when QB Justin Jackson left the game with an ankle injury that looks to be quite serious. He could be sidelined for up to 2 months which means ex-Washington State QB Tommy Bledsoe should get his first start in 2 years. Three fourth-quarter touchdown's lifted San Diego past the Kansas Chiefs 35-13. Dameane Taylor, starting his second game in place of the injured Leon Jones, threw 4 touchdowns on the day for the Chargers including a pair to Marquise Woodson in the final 15 minutes. Defensive End Reggie White (no not that Reggie White) had 2 more sacks giving him a league-leading 8 on the season, just one shy of his previous career high. Bob Rutledge threw 4 touchdown passes as Cincinnati beat Pittsburgh 38-17. Rutledge was quite inconsistant on the day though as he was also picked off 3 times. Bob Edwards was Rutledge's favourite receiver, making 7 catches including 2 for touchdowns. Don Horn's 7th career special teams touchdown, a 48 yard punt return led Baltimore past Cleveland 20-3. The win evens the Ravens record at 2-2 while the Browns fall to 1-3. COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP RICE SHOCKS LOUISIANNA STATE The Rice University Owls pulled off the biggest upset of the week by beating 8th ranked LSU 13-6 in Houston. LSU led at halftime by a 6-0 nothing score before Rice took over in the second half. The Rice defense led by senior Weldon *Humble was outstanding. Humble had a terrific day with a number of NFL scouts in attendance. He had 2 sacks and 6 tackles and always seemed to be in the Tigers backfield. The bright spot for LSU was wide receiver Gary Sturm who had 7 catches in the game. Sturm's stock appears to be on the rise with NFL scouts. The loss drops LSU out of the top twenty while Rice moves in to the 12th slot in the college football poll. Other upsets included number 15 Oklahoma State losing 27-14 to Arkansas while 20th ranked Navy lost to Villanova on a late field goal. Navy QB Tom Maddox was picked off 4 times in the game. There is no change at the top as number one ranked Army improved to 2-0 with 57-10 destruction of Oklahoma. Army running back Glen *Davis is an early Heisman Trophy candidate after running for 203 yards in the game and scoring a pair of touchdowns. TE Hank *Foldberg made 6 catches and scored a touchdown while receiver Barney *Poole ha 8 receptions. Number two ranked Notre Dame beat Illinois 26-10. The Fighting Illini fall from 10th to 14th with the loss. The number 3 ranked Georgia Bulldogs mauled Clemson 62-20. Michigan blew out Indiana 54-3 in their Western Conference opener. The victory moves the Wolverines up two spots to 4th while Tennessee takes over 5th place with a 28-14 win over then number 11 Georgia Tech. The Yellowjackets drop to 15th with the loss. Two other conference matchups saw Florida and Mississippi play to a 6-6 tie while Alabama beat Tulane 21-13. In the Michigan game, defensive back Tommy *Harmon returned two interceptions for touchdowns. The win moves the Wolverines to 4th in the National poll. Ohio State is ranked 10th after a non-conference win over Missouri 17-7. Illinois put up a valiant effort but fell short against number 2 Notre Dame. Illini RB Buddy *Young gained 156 yards and scored Illinois only touchdown in the 26-10 loss to the Irish that drops Illinois to 14th in polls. Wisconsin improved to 2-0 with a 28-21 win over the Bears in California. The victory, led by an outstanding effort from Badgers QB Earl *Girard, moved the school into the national top 20. Conference games next Saturday pit Indiana at Minnesota, Iowa at Michigan, Purdue at Illinois and Wisconsin visiting Northwestern. Ohio State heads west to play number 6 ranked USC. Code:

USC won it's conference opener 14-0 over Washington State but despite the victory the Trojans fell one spot in the polls and are ranked 6th. UCLA moved from 12th to 7th with a 20-0 victory over Oregan State. Carlos Jones threw a pair of touchdown passes to lead the Bruins but he was also intercepted twice in the game something that did not help his stock as a potential first round NFL draft pick. UCLA's real strength this season is it's defense led by senior linebackers Al *Sparlis and Burr *Baldwin. One other conference game had Stanford topping Idaho 47-19. Out of conference, Oregon blanked Pacific 14-0 thanks to a strong defense led by pass rushing defensive ends Richard Pricer and Eric Terrell. The two combined for 5 sacks in the game. Other action saw California lose 28-21 at home to Wisconsin, Washington tied St. Mary's 7-7 and Montana trimmed Colorado State 21-20. This week conference action sees Idaho travel to Washington State, UCLA visit Washington and California host Oregon. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
NHL Season Preview - Part 3 THE DETROIT RED WINGS When the Pacific Coast Hockey League folded in 1926 a deal was made that the league's best club, the Victoria Cougars, would jump to the NHL. Since there was not a suitable arena in Detroit at the time the franchise, now called the Detroit Cougars, played its first two season in Windsor, Ontario. In 1930 the team was renamed the Falcons but two years later after James Norris bought the team he renamed them the Red Wings. The Wings won their first Stanley Cup in 1936 and their second one a year later. In 1943 they won their third Cup and last season the Wings finished 4th with a .500 record. Detroit lost to Boston in the opening round of the playoffs. This year there are high hopes in the Motor City, particularily revolving around a big rookie winger the club has called up from Omaha to start the season. Gordie Howe is poised to make his NHL debut. Here are the key players on this season's Red Wing squad. GOALIE HARRY LUMLEY - Known as Apple Cheeks for his complexion when he blushed, the Owen Sound, Ontario native made his NHL debut in 1943 at the age of 17. This will be his third season in what was a Hall of Fame career. DEFENSE AL DEWSBURY - At 6'2", 200 pounds he was one of the biggest players of his era. Just 20 years old he will be making his NHL debut this season. HAROLD JACKSON - A stay out home defenseman Jackson is entering what would be the final season of his 8 year NHL career. He had 51 points in 219 career games. DOUG MCCAIG - The Guelph, Ontario native has 15 NHL games to his credit prior to this season. He was an allstar in the American League before join RCAF teams during the war. HUGH MILLAR - He will be making his debut with the Wings this season. The Stonewall, Manitoba native would play just 4 games in his real life NHL career. BILL QUACKENBUSH - One of the best puck rushing defensemen of his era he was also outstanding in his own end. This will be his fourth full season in the NHL. He scored 21 points last year in the early stages of a 14 year career that would eventually take him to the Hall of Fame. LEO REISE JR. Reise along with Pete Horcek would be dealt from Chicago to Detroit a month into the 1946 season in exchange for forward Adam Brown. JACK STEWART - Black Jack Stewart was one of the most punishing bodycheckers of his day. He made the first allstar team in 1943 in helping the Wings win their third Stanley Cup. FORWARDS SID ABEL - The Melville, Saskatchewan native will be teamed with Ted Lindsay and rookie Gordie Howe. That line would stay together for many seasons and be regarded as one of the best in hockey history. He made his NHL debut in 1938-39 and is now the Wings Captain. Later Abel would coach the Wings and become a popular television commentator in Detroit. TED LINDSAY - Nicknamed Terrible Ted for his robust, sometimes mean spirited play, Lindsay would be an 8-time first team allstar in his career which stretched for 20 years starting in 1944. GORDIE HOWE - Not much needs to be said about the Floral, Saskatchewan native. This will be Mr. Hockey's first season in the NHL. EDDIE BRUNETEAU - The younger brother of the more celebrated Mud Bruneteau, Eddie would play 181 games in his NHL career. 1945-46 was his most productive season when he lit the lamp 17 times and added 12 helpers in 47 games. GERRY COUTURE - Most of Couture's 18 year pro career was spent in the minors but he did play 385 NHL games. Last season was his rookie year and he tallied 10 points in 43 games. ROY CONACHER - Part of one of the first families of hockey, Roy was younger brother to legendary players Charlie and Lional Conacher. He would team with Billy Taylor to form an explosive combination for one season but was moved to Chicago the following year. JIM CONACHER - Not related to the famed Concher family but Jim and Roy would be teammates in Detroit and later with the Black Hawks. BILLY TAYLOR - A terrific playmaker, the Winnipeg native scored 23 goals for the Leafs last season but was dealt to the Wings in the offseason for Harry Watson. Following the 1947-48 season he would be suspended for gambling violations and never play in the NHL again. BOXING ROUND-UP ZALE STOPS GRAZIANO IN THE 5TH Midleweight contender Tony Zale took another step towards a title shot by making short work of Rocky Graziano in their bout at Madison Square Garden. Zale, who improves to 35-4 with the victory, looked like he was going to end the fight very quickly when he knocked Graziano down twice in round one. Graziano recovered and even managed to floor Zale once in the fourth round although Zale was back on his feet very quickly. Zale has won 11 straight bouts including two over Graziano. His last defeat came in a split decision loss to 8th ranked Billy Bird. Zale is hoping next to get a rematch with number 2 ranked Holman Williams, who knocked out Zale early in the post WWII qualifying phase. Graziano's record drops to 30-14-1 and it appears his career is nearing its end. BRITISH WEEKEND OF CHAMPIONS RESULTS White City Stadium in London, England was packed over the weekend as the post-war British Boxing Champions were declared. The bouts matched the top two British contenders in a bout to determine Great Britian's new champs. Boxing all but dissappeared during the war years so all titles were declared vacant and elimination tournaments began in each weight class last year. In the heavyweight division Bruce Woodcock stopped Tommy Farr by TKO in round 6. Woodcock is ranked 13th in the world and was coming off a solid effort despite losing a 15 round decision to Ezzard Charles. Freddie Mills won by TKO in the 7th round over Alex Buxton for the lightheavyweight title of Britian. Mills was also putting his European Title on the line. With the victory he improves to 29-13-1 and is ranked 17th in the world. Randy Turpin improved his career record to 21-3 after stopping Billy Bird with a 12th round TKO for the British Middleweight title. Frank Johnson defeated Ronnie James for the British Lightweight title. Johnson is not considered to be a world championship contender although James did get a title fight a month ago but was destroyed by World Lightweight champion Ike Williams. Cliff Curvis took the Welterweight title in an unanimous decision over Ernie Roderick. Curvis is ranked the 10th best welterweight fighter in the world. Frankie Kelly scored a 5th round tko over Al Phillips for the Featherweight title and in the bantamweight division Gus Foran successfully defended his British title with an unanimous decision over Johnny King. Foran is now ranked 5th in the world. The flyweight title was not contested. Jackie Patterson presently holds the belt after beating Rinty Monaghan last month. Patterson wanted a fight against third ranked contender Teddy Gardner but Gardner refused because his is in training for next month's world title fight against Little Dado. 5 of the world's top 10 ranked Flyweights after from Great Britian. UPCOMING BOUTS Oct 27 in France Little Dado of the Phillipines meets Britian's Teddy Gardner for vacant World Flyweight Title Nov 24 in Philadelphia Bob Montgomery faces Austalian Vic Patrick in a non-title Lightweight bout STATS AND STANDINGS Code:

WORLD SERIES SET: PIRATES VS INDIANS
DESPITE REDS RUN THE PIRATES PREVAIL The Pittsburgh Pirates survived a furious charge by the Cincinnati Reds but in the end the club that never relinquished first place since June 1 hung on to win the National League Pennant by two games. The Reds actually pulled into a first place tie as late as Monday but in the end did not have enough to stay with the Pirates. On Monday, Cincinnati got 4 rbi's from Jimmy Ripple and 3 from rookie Grady Hatton in an 11-5 victory over St Louis. Johnny Hutchings ran his record to 21-6 in the process. That, coupled with the Pirates 4-1 loss in Chicago, left the two clubs tied with 6 games to play. The Pirates loss was a big surprise in that it came with Cliff Melton (27-11), a lock for pitcher of the year, on the hill. Melton lasted just over 4 innings in his quickest exit of the season. A 63 minute ran delay helped hasten that exit but Melton was clearly off the mark on this day. In hindsight Tuesday was the day that sealed the Reds fate. Arky Vaughan had 2 rbi's and Jim Tobin improved his record to 11-4 with a complete game 4-3 win over the Cubs. The Reds, on the strength of 3 rbi's from catcher Frankie Hayes, were leading the Cardinals 5-4 entering the bottom of the 8th. Marty Marion delivered a 2 out rbi single for St Louis to tie it in the bottom of the 8th and the Cardinals won it in the bottom of the 9th on a Walker Cooper rbi single. Both runs came off Reds starter Howie Fox and many will question the fact that Cincinnati did not go to the bullpen to try and preserve the win. The Pirates are now 1 game ahead. On Wednesday the Reds got back on track as Johnny Mize hit 2 homers in a 7-6 win over St Louis. The Pirates kept their lead at 1 game with a 5-3 win in Chicago. All of the Pittsburgh runs came in the final two innings including a pinch-hit 2-run single off the bat of Ralph Kiner in the top of the ninth. Thursday Ford Garrison had 4 hits and Joe Medwick three as the Reds beat Boston 3-2. Arnold Carter won his 18th game as he outduelled Braves rookie Warren Spahn (15-18). The Pirates stay a game ahead as Bill Elliott and pitcher Preacher Roe each homer in a 7-1 win over the Giants. Roe threw a complete game 4 hitter and is 14-16 on the season. On Friday Cliff Melton 5-hit the Giants in a 6-1 Pittsburgh victory. For Melton it was his major league leading 28th win of the season. Bill Elliott doubled and drove in two runs for the Bucs. The Reds kept pace with a 10-6 win over Boston. It was a huge rally from Cincinnati that kept them just a game back of the Pirates - as the Reds scored twice in the top of the 8th and 5 more times in the ninth. 2 Boston errors in the 9th certainly did not hurt matters as far as Cincinnati was concerned. Rudy York hit his 21st homer for the Braves to move into a tie with Stan Musial of St Louis and injured Reds slugger Joe Dimaggio for the league lead. Dimaggio, who missed most of September with a groin injury, could have been the difference for the Reds had he been able to play. As it is Dimaggio will attempt to play in Saturday's game. Joe Dimaggio does indeed play Saturday and goes 1-for-3 with an rbi but it is no where near enough as Boston blasts the Reds 9-3. Meanwhile in New York the Pirates can clinch the pennant with a win. Trailing 3-2 Tony Cuccinello launches a solo homer in the 8th to tie the game. Into extra innings we go and in the 10th Frankie Gustine socks a 2-run triple to give the Bucs a 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the 10th the Giants get one run back but cannot score the equalizer and Pittsburgh wins the National League Pennant with a 5-4 victory. Sunday's games mean nothing but both the Reds and Pirates win so the final margin will be 2 games. Andy Kampouris goes 1-for-4 for the Reds and it is enough to cost him the batting title to teammate Joe Medwick. Medwick sat out the meaningless final game with a knee injury and he wins the batting title by .00014 over his teammate. INDIANS HOLD OFF RED SOX The Cleveland Indians won the American League Pennant for the fourth time in the past 10 years and in doing so extended the Red Sox title drought to 24 years. Cleveland finished 3 games ahead of Boston and the Red Sox never got closer than to within 2 games in the final week. The Indians success came mainly from the game's best pitching staff, led by Steve Gromek (26-12, 2.97) and Bill Lohrman (19-8, 2.28). Gromek had far and away the best season of his three year career and appears to be the overwhelming favourite for American League pitcher of the year honours. Lohrman, who was AL player of the week twice in September, captured pitcher of the month honours after going 7-0 with a 1.29 era down the stretch. Indians outfielder Ival Goodman also had a great September, hitting .361 with 6 homers and 23 rbi's, and was named batter of the month. A third Cleveland player, 3B Oscar Grimes was named player of the week after hitting .435 with 3 homers and 11 rbi's in his last 7 games. Washington rookie Les Fleming won the American League batting title and appears to be the favourite for rookie of the year honours. The 31 year old veteran of 8 minor league seasons hit .333 in 136 games for the Senators. The first baseman had played 34 major league games prior to this season including 25 games to end the 1945 season when he hit .370 in 27 at bats. Ted Williams of Boston went into a mini-slump in August and September (hitting just .301 over the final two months) and his average fell from .351 on July 17th to .322 at the end of the season. Williams finished third in the race behind Fleming and Washington OF Mel Mazzera, who hit .324. WORLD SERIES PREVIEW - CLEVELAND INDIANS VS PITTSBURGH PIRATES In a rematch of the 1937 series the Cleveland Indians will face the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 1946 World Championship. The Pirates beat the Indians in a thrilling 7 game series the last time these two clubs hooked up. Pittsburgh also triumphed in the first meeting between the two clubs back in 1915. The Pirates took the '15 series in 5 games. CLEVELAND WORLD SERIES HISTORY 1915 lost to Pittsburgh 4 games to 1 1933 lost to St Louis 4 games to 3 1937 lost to Pittsburgh 4 games to 3 1941 beat Chicago 4 games to 3 1943 beat St Louis 4 straight PITTSBURGH WORLD SERIES HISTORY 1901 and 1902 won NL but no World Series 1903 beat New York 5 games to 2 1905 lost to New York in 4 straight 1910 beat Philadelphia 4 games to 2 1911 beat Philadelphia 4 games to 1 1912 beat Boston 4 games to 3 1913 lost to Boston 4 games to 2 1914 beat Boston 4 games to 2 1915 beat Cleveland 4 games to 1 1921 lost to Washington 4 games to 2 1924 beat Detroit 4 games to 3 1925 lost to Detroit in 4 straight 1937 beat Cleveland 4 games to 3 Here is a comparison of the two teams as we prepare for the start of the 43rd World Series. CATCHER With starter Tom Padden (.226,3,31) out for the season with a broken foot the Pirates have been platooning Bill Salkeld (.237,3,17) and Mickey Owen (.253,0,8). Cleveland also platoons it's catchers with Vince Castino (.184,2,34) playing against righty's while Clyde Klutz (.231,0,2) draws the assignment against lefty's. Both Klutz and Castino are castoffs from other clubs and were signed as free agents a couple of years ago by the Tribe. Neither team has much talent here but the Pirates have a slight edge. FIRST BASE Pittsburgh splits the job between Dick Siebert (.315,1,39) and George Archie (.259,1,37). The 34 year old Siebert, who plays against righty's, was signed in spring training after the Giants waived him. 30 year old Mickey Rocco (.304,2,47) took over as the everyday first baseman for the Indians in July. Slight edge to the Indians. SECOND BASE Veteran Tony Cuccinello (.295,18,87) gives the Pirates an allstar at second base. The 17 year pro has won 8 gold gloves and was a member of the 1937 World Series winning Pirates. Charlie English (.273,1,57) just finished his 5th season as the Indians everyday second baseman. He played on both the 1941 and 43 world series winners. English is a solid player but the edge goes to Cuccinello and the Pirates. SHORTSTOP Arky Vaughan (.318,7,79) made his 5th allstar appearance this season. The 15 year veteran has won 8 gold gloves at shortstop and hit .370 in leading the Pirates to the 1937 World Series. 29 year old Lou Boudreau (.294,4,50) has had a couple of serious injuries in his career but is still an outstanding player. Hit .282 in 10 career World Series games. Again the Pirates have a slight edge but Cleveland has a solid player at the position. THIRD BASE Bill Elliott (.275,16,87) of Pittsburgh and Cleveland's Oscar Grimes (.302,18,88) are both outstanding players. Grimes, a 3 time allstar, has hit .310 in 11 World Series games while the 29 year old Elliott has 4 allstar appearances under his belt. He will be making his World Series debut. This position is considered even. LEFTFIELD Rookie Ralph Kiner (.279,12,68) has established himself as a bonafide big league outfielder. Kiner improved as the season progressed and hit 9 of his 12 homers after August 1st. 9 year veteran Jeff Heath (.282,14,81) patrols left for the Indians. The 5-time allstar hit just .125 in the 1941 World Series and missed the '43 series with a broken rib so he will be looking to redeem himself this time. The edge goes to Cleveland and is based solely on experience. CENTERFIELD Bill Norman (.287,3,67) spent 11 seasons in the minors before cracking the Pirates roster permanently. He made the allstar team in 1943 and again the following season. A broken hand in May cost Ival Goodman (.342,15,67) 6 weeks and a shot at the batting title. He was red-hot in September and was named AL batter of the month. The 38 year old has played in 3 World Series with the Tribe, hitting .258 in 18 games. Edge goes to Cleveland with a once again healthy Goodman RIGHTFIELD 33 year old Fern Bell (.289,5,71) completed his second season as an everyday player for the Bucs. He won his first gold glove while playing leftfield last season. Taffy Wright (.319,3,38) had a tough season. He broke his wrist in April while with the Braves and missed 2 months. A week after his return to the lineup he was dealt to Cleveland but in late August bruised his heel and missed two more weeks. In all Wright played just 82 games this season but he hit .310 in September and appears ready for his first taste of postseason play. The edge goes to the Tribe but only slightly. STARTING PITCHING Pittsburgh has Cliff Melton (28-11, 2.28), Ken Heintzelman (19-14, 3.07) and either Preacher Roe (14-16, 3.34) or Jim Tobin (11-4, 3.72). Melton is a sure-fire Hall of Famer and the only one with postseason experience (1-1 in 1937). Cleveland counters with Bill Lohrman (19-8, 2.28), Steve Gromek (26-12, 2.97) and Allie Reynolds (15-15, 3.53). The 33 year old Lohrman is 2-0 in 4 postseason starts and is the hotest pitcher in either league right now with 7 straight wins and a 1.29 era in that time. 26 year old Gromek led the American League in wins in his third major league season while the 31 year old Reynolds was AL rookie of the year in 1943 and although he had a sore shoulder and did not pitch, was on the '43 Indians World Series winning roster. Edge - None as both teams are very equal. BULLPEN Either Roe or Tobin will join Dutch Dietz (4-0, 2.78) and Alex Carrasquel (1.62, 4 sv) in the Pittsburgh pen. Bill McGee (6-4, 3.89) may also see some work in long relief. Number 4 starter Claude Passeau (13-16, 3.47) will take the long relief role in the Cleveland pen where he will be joined by Johnny Babich (12-7, 3.29), Ted Wilks (0-0, 1.50) and Ray Poat (7 sv, 5.23). Pittsburgh has a slight edge here. THE BENCH Infielder Frankie Gustine (.262,2,16) is usually the first pinch-hitter off the Pirates bench. Jim Russell (.327,5,22), Lee Handley (.328,0,2) and Bill Nagel (.357,1,5) may also appear. 40 year old Gus Suhr (.355,1,2) is the Indians most dangerous pinch-hitter. He was released by the Pirates in July of this season after 16 seasons in Pittsburgh. The Indians will also count on OF Jim Gleason (.310,3,34) and longtime backup Ken Keltner (.268,4,17) With Suhr's experience the Indians get a slight nod in this area. OUTLOOK Should be a very close series but TSN see's the Tribe winning in 7 hard fought games. NFL WEEK 5 EAGLES OFF TO 5-0 START The Philadelphia Eagles have never had a losing season and 1946 does not look to change that 5 year trend. The Eagles improved to 5-0 with a 17-9 victory over the 1-4 St Louis Rams. QB Ken Neal, a second year pro from Oklahoma, looked very good in his second straight start in place of the injured Doug Bass. Neal completed 23 of 36 passes for 248 yards and scored a touchdown on a 3 yard run. His favourite receiving target was running back Harley Mitchell. The workhorse back made 5 catches for 48 yards and ran 29 times for 98 yards. Philadelphia's defense, always among the league's best limited the Rams offense to just 245 net yards. The Eagles D also provided a touchdown thanks to a 16 yard fumble return by Marion Dulaney. BRONCOS SURPRISED BY JETS 34-13 Few expected the Denver Broncos to be 4-0 entering their game against the Jets this weekend. Even fewer expected the 0-4 Jets to beat the 4-0 Broncos but New York did so, and did it in convincing fashion dominating the Broncos on both sides of the ball. Steve *Van Buren ran for 2 fourth quarter touchdowns and gained 155 yards on the day, which was just shy of the Broncos total offense. Van Buren also had 6 receptions for 62 yards in what the former LSU star called "his greatest day as a pro". Denver back Oscar Hartings was held to just 37 yards rushing on 18 carries. Denver QB Jay Cason completed 18 of 34 passes but could not find the end zone and was picked off once which led eventually to a Jets major. PATRIOTS TAKE TOP SPOT IN AFC EAST AS BILLS DROP SECOND STRAIGHT The New England Patriots beat Kansas City 31-7 to take over sole possession of first place in the AFC East. Buffalo, which lost to New England in week 4, was beaten for the second straight week. This time San Diego stopped the Bills 17-6. In Foxboro, Pats RB Larry Villariel ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns while Kansas City QB Ulish Groce was picked off twice, including one that Taurus Redding returned for a New England touchdown. Groce, who was rewarded with a long term contract in the offseason, has now been picked off 8 times while throwing just 1 touchdown pass in 5 games. In his defense, the Chiefs offensive line has been downright offensive, surrendering a league high 22 sacks including 6 yesterday. In San Diego it was the Sam Joe show. The Chargers linebacker tied a team record by picking off 3 Leon Allen passes. Joe also ran one back for an 80 yard touchdown and had 8 tackles on the day. Bills signal caller Allen was picked off 4 times and has lost 2 games since his return from an injury that forced him to miss week's 2 and 3. RB Rob Douglass had a strong game for San Diego gaining 99 yards on the ground and scoring a touchdown. The Chargers have won 3 straight and are tied with Denver at 4-1 atop the AFC West. The Oakland Raiders did just enough to get their second win of the season, beating 2-3 Miami 16-10 in Oakland. Miami won pretty much every statistical category except for the one that counts the most - the Dolphins could not get the ball in the endzone despite numerous second half opportunities. Stacey Jolley ran for 102 yards for Miami while reigning MVP Johnny Cushing was held to just 68 on the ground for the Raiders. The Raiders defense was outstanding led by Jevon Love, with 13 tackles and 2 sacks, and rookie LB Pat *Harder's career high 9 tackles. In other action It was like two different games in Indianapolis. The Colts spotted Cincinnati a 19-3 lead before scoring 20 unanswered points in the second half to win 23-19. Both clubs are now 2-3 on the season. The hometown Pittsburgh Steelers upset Tennessee 19-14 as Steelers QB Tom Friede threw for 262 yards and rookie Elmer *Angsman ran for a career best 88 yards. Titans QB Manfred Gayle tossed a pair of touchdown passes and threw for 274 yards but a late interception by Todd Elwell ended any chances for a game winning drive. Bob Slaughter passed for 193 yards and the winning touchdown as the Browns beat Jacksonville 14-11at Cleveland Stadium. The Jags lost QB Tommy Bledsoe with a broken foot midway through the game. Bledsoe was replacing starter Justin Jackson who had been sidelined with an ankle injury. With a bye next week Jackson should be ready to start the next game. Bledsoe's injury forced Dale Robinson, a 5th year pro from Mississippi State, to take his first regular season snaps. Robinson, who was the number 3 QB for the Jets the last 5 seasons, never appeared in a regular season game. Signed by the Jags in the offseason and elevated to backup status last week with Jackson's injury, Robinson was 7 of 10 for 103 yards in his debut but he could not get the Jags into the endzone with the go-ahead score. The Saints and Atlanta are both 2-2 and atop the NFC West after New Orleans beat the Falcons 20-14. Ryan Boyette threw for 326 yards and a touchdown to lead the Saints. Todd Berger scored the winning touchdown midway through the 4th quater and ran for 86 yards in the game. It spoiled a tremendous effort from Atlanta safety Joe Grant who had 12 tackles and returned a fumble for a touchdown. Carolina is also 2-2 and tied for the NFC West lead after beating Tampa 29-20. Panthers QB Javon Jamieson was the hero, completing 27 of 46 passes for 311 yards and 3 touchdowns. With their top three QB's out of action, number 4 man Tim Moore made his first NFL start for Tampa. Moore, in his 6th pro season out of Indiana, had never appeared in a regular season game prior to yesterday. He was signed as a free agent during the bye week and it looked like he was unfamiliar with the offense, completing just 12 of 32 passes. The Bucs are hopeful that number 3 QB Steve Quayle will be healthy enough to start next week in Cincinnati. The Seattle Seahawks won their second straight game, surprising Washington 27-20. It was almost like Sammy *Baugh and Dennis Hayes switched uniforms. Seattle QB Hayes threw for 343 yards and 3 touchdowns while Baugh completed just 18 of 33 passes and was intercepted once. Like Tampa, the Seahawks have lost 3 QB's to injury so Hayes was signed as a free agent two weeks ago. Since then he was won both of his starts for the previously winless Seahawks. The second year pro was drafted out of Mississippi State in the 4th round by New England. He started a couple of games for the Pats last season but was released at training camp. Markus Collingsworth made 3 catches for 120 yards including a pair of long touchdown passes to lead the Seahawks. First round pick Marion *Motley ran for 49 yards but continues to struggle as he fumbled twice and still has yet to score a touchdown in the NFL. Another rookie, Dante *Lavelli of the Redskins caught two passes, both for touchdowns. Arizona handed the New York Giants their third straight loss, beating New York 35-21. Cardinals QB Tony Marsalis threw 4 touchdown passes while his counterpart with New York, Eric Poppinga was picked off twice leading to 14 Arizona points. The 49ers are 4-1 after beating Dallas 24-17 in San Francisco. Russ Davis ran for 112 yards and scored two touchdowns for the 49ers, who have won 4 in a row. Vaughn Diedrick and receiver John Weaterhall combined on a 1 yard pass with 6 seconds left in regulation to earn Houston a 13-13 tie against Baltimore. Neither team could score in overtime but it wasn't for a lack of chances. Diedrick was picked off twice in the extra frame including once in the Baltimore endzone while a fumble from Ravens receiver Doug Carter and some ill-timed penalties cost Baltimore a couple of chances. Fabien Montgomery ran for 125 yards for Baltimore including 44 yards in overtime. NFL SCOUTING REPORT The 1947 NFL draft is a long ways away but pro scouts are already hard at work following the top college athletes. Here are the top 10 players to watch in the next NFL draft according to a recent survey of NFL scouts. This list will be updated once a month. #1 OT Tex *Coulter Army - The number 1 contender for the new Outland Trophy which will be award to the top interior lineman. #2 CB Tom Morris Brigham Young - Solid cover cornerback. #3 CB Ken Murphy Southern California Stock is on the rise after another great game vs Ohio State #4 FS Vance Steele Boston College Has not received the publicity accorded to Murphy but may be a better NFL player. #5 RB Herman *Wedemeyer St. Mary's - together with Davis the best running backs available #6 RB Glen *Davis Army - Heisman favourite is a certain top 10 pick #7 CB Neil *Armstrong Oklahoma State - a deep draft for defensive backs may knock him out of top 10. #8 FS Frank Reagan Pennsylvania - a strong showing by his team could give him a ton of publicity. #9 OT Art *McCaffrey Pacific - small school lineman could crack top 10 #10 OLB Bob *Forte Arkansas - does it all on defense for the Razorbacks. SOUTHERN CAL BEATS OHIO STATE The University of Southern California Trojans topped Ohio State 27-14 at the Rose Bowl in a battle between top 10 teams. WR Roy Williams caught a pair of touchdown passes and CB Ken Murphy returned an interception for a touchdown to lead the Trjoans. Tommy Harmon - 18 tackles and 2 interceptions for 2-0 Michigan NHL PREVIEW NEW YORK RANGERS SEASON PREVIEW -part 4 of 6 The National Hockey League granted Madison Square Garden a franchise to operate its own team for the 1926-27 season, following the initial success of the New York Americans, who began play in the Garden for the 1925-26 season and would become the Rangers first arch-rivals. The Rangers made the playoffs in 15 of their first 16 seasons and by 1940 had sipped champagne from the Stanley Cup on three occassions. However, World War II would break up a very strong team and it would be decades before the Rangers recovered and even longer before they would win another Cup. The Rangers enter the 1946-47 season riding a dismal streak of 4 straight last place finishes. Here are the Rangers key players: GOALIE JIM HENRY - Nicknamed Sugar Jim, Henry showed great promise when he first joined the Rangers in 1941 but was not the same when he returned last season after 3 years of military service. He would eventually have some strong years in Boston in the 50's but did not have the career originally envisioned after his rookie campaign. CHUCK RAYNER - Known as the first wandering goaltender, the Saskatchewan native often made a save and skated up ice with the puck before hustling back to his net. Twice in particular he came right in on the opposition goalie in an NHL game and almost scored. Rayner will get the bulk of the work for the Rangers this season. DEFENSE JOE COOPER - Winnipeg native rejoins the team he began his career with after playing 7 seasons with the Chicago Black Hawks. Not much of a point producer but he is a tough stay at home defenseman. BILL JUZDA - Another Winnipeg native, Juzda joined the Rangers in 1941 but missed 3 seasons during the war. Not the best skater or puck handler but he is a hard hitting defenseman who plays his poisition effectively. HAL LAYCOE - The Sutherland, Saskatchewan native made his NHL debut last season, picking up 2 assists in 17 games. Another steady defender with little offensive ability. Eventually would coach 2 seasons in the NHL. BILL MOE - A solid positional defenseman from Danvers, Massachusetts, Moe will eventually be inducted in the US Hockey Hall of Fame. Entering his third season with the Rangers. NEIL COLVILLE - An allstar as a forward in the late thirties, Colville seamlessly made the switch to defense after returning from the Armed Forces. His brother Mac would also play a few games for the Rangers this season. FORWARDS TONY LESWICK- A skilled forward from Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Leswick tallied 24 points as a rookie with the Rangers last season. GRANT WARWICK- Won NHL rookie of the year in 1941-42 and scored a career high 20 goals in 1944-45. The Regina native is one of the teams offensive leaders. EDGAR LAPRADE - Named NHL rookie of the year last season after scoring 15 goals and adding 19 assists in 49 games. He would be considered one of the best forwards of the 1940's. BRYAN HEXTALL - A Hockey hall of famer and the first of 3 generations of Hextall's in the NHL, sons Bryan Jr and Dennis along with grandson Ron. His overtime goal in game 6 won the Rangers the 1940 Stanley Cup but it would be 54 years before they would win another. Hextall played just 3 games last season before missing the rest of the year with liver trouble. CAL GARDNER- Like teammate Hextall, Gardner would have two sons play in the NHL (Dave and Paul). He joined the Rangers late last season and scored 8 goals in 16 games. He, Church Russell and Rene Trudell formed the Atomic Line with the New York Rovers of the Eastern Hockey League. CHURCH RUSSELL - The Winnipeg native joined joined the Rangers late last season with linemates Cal Gardner and Rene Trudell. He had 5 assists in 17 games as a rookie. His NHL career would last just 90 games. RENE TRUDELL - Scored 8 points in 16 games when bought by the Rangers with Gardner and Russell late last season. Would spend two more seasons with the Rangers before being dealt to Toronto but he would never crack the Leafs roster. AB DEMARCO - Joined the Rangers, his 4th NHL team, in 1943-44. He had 47 points, including 20 goals last season. His son, Ab Jr. would eventually make the NHL. ALF PIKE - Spent his entire pro career in the Rangers organization, first joining the club in 1939-40 for their Cup run. Missed 2 seasons during the war but retured last year and notched 16 points in 33 games. He would coach the Rangers for a couple of season in the early 60's. PHIL WATSON - Montreal native enters his 12th NHL season. He won a Cup with the Rangers in 1940 and also in 1944 during his only season with the Montreal Canadiens. He rejoined the Rangers the following year and last season scored 26 points. continued

Next up is the World Series. I am just about to sim out the first week of it now. Would you rather daily updates on the series as opposed to the weekly reports like I currently do or should it stay to a weekly format as above?
