I had a twelve year career with several clubs but I am mostly remembered as a member of one franchise which moved during my tenure. I played in one World Series and was named to two All Star teams. Later in my career I was drafted by an expansion team but I never played for them as I was traded to the team that my first club had played in the World Series. I had a knack for breaking up no-hitters; no less than four times I had my club’s only hit in a game. Who am I?

I had a very productive career although many causal fans might know little about me. I finished in the top 10 in batting seven times. I was asked for in trade in exchange for a youngster who would go on to have a Hall of Fame career but my team’s owner refused the offer. Although I was generally a likeable teammate, I once got into a fistfight with another future Hall of Fame player on my team. He suffered a broken bone and was out of the lineup over a month. My career was basically over at age 31 although not due to any on the field events. Who am I?

I enjoyed a 14 year career with the bulk of my time spent with one AL club. My teams made three playoff appearances, including a World Series in my rookie season. I did not have an at bat in my only World Series and got into only one game as a pinch runner. I was once traded in exchange for a son of a major league manager and another player who was a certified flake. Although I batted over .290 for my entire career, I finished in the top 10 in hitting only twice and never won a batting title. In my only All Star appearance, the MVP of the game was won by a “hometown” player. Who am I?

What specific commonality do we all share?

1) Zoilo Versalles

2) Elmer Flick (the offer turned down was Ty Cobb)

3) Lance Johnson

Each led the AL in triples for 3 consecutive seasons.

I was off the scent a bit after getting Flick and Johnson, because I was thinking players who hit 3 triples in one game.

I knew my question would only last until the Bum decided to make an appearance here. Nice job, indeed!

Tricky clue on the All-Star "hometown" player too - I immediately thought of Sandy Alomar, who won it at the Jake. After I bit, I came up with Clemens, who won in the Astrodome. But it turned out to actually be Piazza, in Philadelphia.

It wasn't until I thought of Turk Wendell (the flake), when I finally got on the scent. Always nice to see a little Chicago tie in.

Nice question Legend.

Clemens was born in Ohio, but he was raised in Houston, thru high school. Then went to Austin to play college ball. If you ask him where his hometown is, he's not likely to tell you "Dayton".

Thanks for pointing that out though.

Thanks for the feedback. I actually love hearing how you deduced the answers. I know I am a trivia geek but it's fascinating to me.

Throughout my 12 year career I never hit over .300 although I did finish in the top 10 in batting once. One of my memorable moments was making a great play for the last out to save a perfect game. I played several positions throughout my career but I rank second for one franchise in games played at my most common position. I also managed for awhile but my record was less than stellar and under .500. I finished my career playing in Kansas City. Who am I?

I had a nice 15 year career with one franchise. I won 20 games once and was in the top 10 in the league in wins and winning percentage a few times. In fact I was my franchise’s first 20 game winner. My team made four appearances in the postseason and my record was pretty good: seven wins against four defeats and an ERA under 3.00. Even so, I was bumped from the rotation in my one and only World Series appearance due to our solid rotation in which four of us won 13 or more games. Who am I?

I had a 16 year career while playing most of my games in the outfield. I was a first round draft pick and later an All Star with my original team. In my only All Star at bat, I popped out against a pitcher who once pitched a perfect game and would be enshrined in the Hall of Fame. I was traded to the other league after five seasons and stayed there the rest of my career. Once I had my league’s longest hitting streak of the season. I finished my career playing in a platoon system under a Hall of Fame manager where I hit well over .300 and drove in over 50 runs despite playing in less than half of my team’s games. Who am I?

1) ?
2) Paul Splittorff
3) Johnny Grubb

Looks like the commonality is players who wore glasses. I'm stumped on #1, for now anyway...

Nice job! #1 did not wear glasses near as I can tell.
Carlton may have a clue on this one if he'd take a look.

Grubb popped out against Catfish Hunter in his only All Star at bat.
Splittorff was relegated to bullpen duty in favor of fellow starters Gura, Leonard, and Gale in the 1980 World Series.

I'm focused on the "last out of the perfect game" clue and I'm just not gettin' there. I'll have to take another angle on it.

By the way, I think you misread the stat line on Splitorff - he just couldn't have been 7-4 in the postseason. The playoffs were only best of 5 back then. I can't seem him getting 11 decisions over that span. In fact, in the 3 playoff years where he played a prominent role, KC could not have won more than 6 games.

Very Nice one LL!!!

1) Would be Firebrand George Stovall, who saved a low throw by Bill Bradley, which by the way was the very LAST play of the great Addie Joss' Perfect game. That KC team was the federal leagues KC Packers...

You got me at 1st...I was thinking Bobby Wine...but I don't recall him making a "memorable" play in Bunning's perfect game...and he ended his 12 years in Mon.

As for the link...since I don't know the other two, I have no clue....as usual

Indeed you are correct. I humbly ask for forgiveness. I often check and double check my questions but failed to do so on this one.

Nice job yourself. I was hoping the KC clue would throw people off until they really looked into this question.

Unfortunately the commonality is rather boring and requires no knowledge of any of the player's careers

Who are 3 people not in this room?

Is it the double consonant at the end of their names?

The glasses thing would have been a good one...

1- I had a very long career stretching across four decades. Despite my longevity I never finished in the top ten of any offensive statistic. Early in my career I was stuck behind a player who had been an All Star at my position every season I had been with that club! However, a big trade gave me a new opportunity to shine with the team I am most well-known for. One time I broke my thumb in a collision with a future NFL player. My parents were entertainers and you could say I dabbled in that myself. Who am I?

2- I had a long career although I was not an offensive powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination. Unless you count HBP, I was never in the top 10 of any offensive category. I played 15 seasons, nearly all with one club and I never left the west coast during my active career. Although I started over 100 games several times, most years I played as part of a platoon at my position. My clubs made many trips to the postseason. I had a relative who was famous outside of sports and I was noted for introducing something to the game as a result of an injury I suffered. Who am I?

3- I was drafted fourth overall, behind two other players at my same position and a Pac 10 pitcher who was the College Player of the Year. Like those I am listed with, my clubs made many trips to the post-season with various results of success. I was a four-time All Star and twice I finished in the top ten of the league’s MVP voting although I never finished in the top 10 in my league in batting average, slugging, or home runs. I was traded by my first team to a club where I replaced a popular player at my position. Three years later I had a career year with 100 walks, RBI, and runs scored in one season. Who am I?

Finally, what exceptional commonality do these three share?
