Note: The html is now updated... You can view it here! Cleveland struggled with a 15-15 record this month. The team's struggles were magnified on August 30th when they lost one of their key performers, second baseman Willie Verdos, for the season with shoulder problems. St. Louis went 18-12 to pull back to within 1.5 games of the lead. Boston continues to dominate the NL, and they almost have the pennant sewn up. They currently have an 11-game lead with just 22 games remaining. Batters of the Month: AL - Fabian White, 2B, St. Louis Browns - In the first starting job of his career, White hit .396 with 13 RBI and 13 runs scored. He was acquired on July 30th in a trade with Pittsburgh, and immediately was handed the everyday duties at second. NL - Scott Podlasek, RF, Pittsburgh Pirates - He hit .371 with 22 RBI and 12 runs scored. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Doug Vanden, St. Louis Browns - Vanden went 5-0 with a 1.19 ERA as St. Louis pushes for the pennant. NL - David Smith, St. Louis Cardinals - Smith is a very good pitcher, but little is known about him since he plays for the once-hapless Cardinals. In August, he was 6-2 with a 1.82 ERA. He is 20-13 with a 2.30 on the season, and the Cards may be on their way to the first winning season in team history. American League Standings Cleveland 78 54 .591 - St. Louis (A) 77 56 .579 1.5 Detroit 75 57 .568 3.0 Washington 72 61 .541 6.5 Chicago (A) 59 72 .450 18.5 Philadelphia (A) 59 72 .450 18.5 Boston (A) 54 78 .409 24.0 New York (A) 54 78 .409 24.0 National League Standings Boston (N) 83 49 .629 - Philadelphia (N) 72 60 .545 11.0 St. Louis (N) 69 63 .523 14.0 Chicago (N) 65 68 .489 18.5 New York (N) 62 70 .470 21.0 Pittsburgh 62 70 .470 21.0 Cincinnati 61 71 .462 22.0 Brooklyn 54 77 .412 28.5 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .344 with 8 RBI and 12 runs scored. The Broncos are in a full-fledged pennant race with the Browns. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle has begun to warm up to NL pitching, and perhaps he was better suited for this league. He hit .273 (9-for-33) this month with 7 RBI and 3 runs scored. With the Reds far out of the pennant race, they would like to give him more at-bats, but it will be tough with the expanded September rosters. Chief Netsky, SP, New York (A) - Netsky still has seen no action for New York. He should get at least one start before the season is over, since he is already competing in practice for the 4th starter's job. As he develops in his career, he will make a dangerous duo for New York with their other young ace, "The Irish Flame" Eddie Teague. Last edited by Matt from TN; 01-31-2005 at 09:27 AM. |

It shocked no one to see the Boston Beaneaters easily win their first NL pennant. The AL race was quite another story however. Cleveland led the league most of the season, and they continued their lead through half of the season's final month. On September 16th, the Broncos began a 5-game losing streak which dropped them off the lead. Overall, they lost 9 of their final 12 games and finished the season in 3rd place, 4 games off the lead. Both St. Louis and Detroit leapfrogged Cleveland and battled for the pennant. At one point all three teams were tied for first. The Browns won 10 of their final 12 games and captured the pennant. It was the third pennant (in four seasons) in their franchise's history. The trades they made in late July, which were questioned by many baseball enthusiasts at the time, apparently paid off. With the hot AL race, much of the Beaneaters' accomplishments were overlooked in the NL. They became the first team to win the NL pennant other than the Phillies. With the schedule lengthened to 154 games this season, Boston set a new record with 94 wins. Regardless of the number of games played, the Beaneaters also set two other records - the best-ever winning percentage (.610) and the biggest lead ever over a second-place team (13). They finished with the #1 pitching staff and #1 offense in all of baseball, and if age doesn't catch up to them, they will be major contenders again next season. Final Standings: American League Standings St. Louis (A) 91 63 .591 - Detroit 89 65 .578 2.0 Cleveland 87 67 .565 4.0 Washington 83 71 .539 8.0 Chicago (A) 68 86 .442 23.0 New York (A) 67 87 .435 24.0 Philadelphia (A) 66 88 .429 25.0 Boston (A) 65 89 .422 26.0 National League Standings Boston (N) 94 60 .610 - St. Louis (N) 81 73 .526 13.0 Philadelphia (N) 79 75 .513 15.0 Chicago (N) 78 76 .506 16.0 New York (N) 74 80 .481 20.0 Cincinnati 73 81 .474 21.0 Pittsburgh 72 82 .468 22.0 Brooklyn 65 89 .422 29.0 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - On Sept 20th, in the midst of Cleveland's late struggles, Allen went down with a broken hip after a collision at the plate against the New York Highlanders. He finished the season with the 2nd best batting average in the AL and the 3rd best OPS. His final stats: .343, 1 HR, 49 RBI, 67 R, 472 AB, 162 H, 50 BB, 27 K, 35-15 SB, .850 OPS... He set career highs in RBI, at-bats, hits, doubles (11) and walks. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle was 3-for-10 in September. He showed enough improvement that he can possibly expect more playing time next season. His final stats: .194, 0 HR, 12 RBI, 7 R, 103 AB, 20 H, 3 2B, 2 3B, 3 BB, 17 K, 2-0 SB, .477 OPS Chief Netsky, SP, New York (A) - As promised, Chief finally got the opportunity to pitch. He started three games. His debut was rough against Washington. He allowed 6 runs on 8 hits and 5 walks over 7 2/3 innings. His next outing, against Philadelphia, was much better. He allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits and 6 walks over 7 2/3 innings. His final start was a rematch with Washington. This time, he allowed only 1 run on 5 hits and 5 walks over 8 1/3 innings. Unfortunately, he finshed 0-2 in those three starts. His final stats: 0-2, 3 GS, 3.04 ERA, 23.2 IP, 18 HA, 8 ER, 16 BB, 7 K, 1.44 WHIP |

Last season was exciting, with the Beaneaters wresting the NL pennant from the grasp of the Phillies, the Browns winning their 3rd AL pennant at the very end of September, the Cleveland Broncos having by-far their most successful season and the White Sox imploding after winning the 1903 AL pennant. This season, the powers-that-be decided to bring back the World Series. This time, it will be a best-of-seven series. Detractors say the World Series cheapens the pennant won by the World Series loser, but proponents say its good for the game and good to have an overall champion. Several teams look like they will compete seriously for the AL pennant this season, including Cleveland and perennial contenders St. Louis and Detroit. In the NL, Boston was unstoppable in 1904 and they are back for another shot. The Phillies and surprising Cardinals will have something to say about that. Ancestors Added None |

With a new season underway, a few surprises have already come to light. It has become obvious in the league's fifth season that April is a topsy-turvy month. Often times, a team comes out of nowhere to lead the league after this first month, but they rarely hang on to the lead for very long. In the AL, the Boston Pilgrims grabbed the first lead in their franchise's history. They have the most losses of any team in the league's history (although Pittsburgh and Brooklyn of the NL are right behind them). Their 20-8 record can be attributed to great hitting and solid pitching. Second baseman Warren Larkin leads the team with a .356 average. Meanwhile, pitcher Jon Douglas has been almost unbeatable. He is 5-1 with a 1.83 ERA. The Philadelphia Athletics have gotten off to another good start, but even their 15-9 record has them 4.5 games behind the Pilgrims. Washington, New York and Detroit had winning Aprils, but division champion St. Louis, 1903 champion Chicago and 1904 runner-up Cleveland have all stumbled out of the gates. After finishing in 6th place in the NL last year, Cincinnati has taken the lead after the first month of play. They are 18-6 and both their offense and pitching are ranked 2nd in baseball. 26-year-old rightfielder Chris Jennings leads the team with a .373 average, and Bryan Reyes continues to be a dominant pitcher. He is 5-1 with a 1.88 ERA. Last season's top three teams, Boston, St. Louis and Philadelphia, all have winning records and are either 3 or 3.5 games behind the Reds. Batters of the Month: AL - Warren Larkin, 2B, Boston Pilgrims - He hit .356 with 24 RBI and 13 runs scored. NL - "Dark Horse" Allen, CF, Philadelphia Phillies - He hit .389 with 18 RBI, 22 runs scored and 4 home runs. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Jon Douglas, Boston Pilgrims - He was 5-1 with a 1.83 ERA. NL - Jon Celaya, Boston Beaneaters - Celaya picked up where he left off last season. He was 5-1 in April with a 1.72 ERA. American League Standings Boston (A) 20 5 .800 - Philadelphia (A) 15 9 .625 4.5 Washington 14 10 .583 5.5 New York (A) 13 11 .542 6.5 Detroit 13 12 .520 7.0 St. Louis (A) 9 16 .360 11.0 Chicago (A) 8 17 .320 12.0 Cleveland 6 18 .250 13.5 National League Standings Cincinnati 16 8 .667 - St. Louis (N) 13 11 .542 3.0 Boston (N) 13 12 .520 3.5 Philadelphia (N) 13 12 .520 3.5 Chicago (N) 12 12 .500 4.0 Brooklyn 11 14 .440 5.5 Pittsburgh 10 14 .417 6.0 New York (N) 10 15 .400 6.5 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey didn't play his first game until April 22nd after nursing his broken hip all winter and spring. In just 6 games, he hit .364 with 1 RBI and 4 runs scored. Perhaps with him back, the Broncos can return to being a pennant challenger. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - In limited action, Kahle was 2-for-5 with 1 RBI. All three of his games this season have been played at 1B, as opposed to last season where he almost exclusively played at 3B. Chief Netsky, SP, New York (A) - Chief was returned to the bullpen this season, but he's also listed as the team's sub-starter when needed. He's pitched three games this season, all starts. He went 2-1 with a 3.27 ERA. In 22 innings, he allowed 24 hits, 8 earned runs, 6 walks and got 9 K's. Opponents hit .293 off of him, and his WHIP was 1.36. In his first start of the season - April 6th against Detroit - he recorded his first career win. |

If there's anything you guys would like to see me report on that you're interested in, let me know. I had considered listing the top players at every position around the league. The players' names are already becoming very familiar to me, and I believe as the leagues' history grows, the interest in it will too.

June 1, 1905
As many expected, the Pilgrims struggled with a 9-18 record in May. However, they are still in second place. The Athletics are surprising the AL after finishing in 7th place last season. The A's are now is first, thanks mainly to an offense led by first baseman Ricky "Bird Legs" Childerhose (.365, 30 RBI), second baseman Steve Collar (.326, 27 RBI) and centerfielder Terrence Bakula (.322, 23 RBI). They have also gotten fine pitching from the likes of Greg Heiderich (8-4, 2.07) and young "Brickhead" Bill Horton (9-2, 2.66). In the NL, Cincinnati managed to stay in first despite a 14-14 month. The Boston Beaneaters and Brooklyn Superbas have both closed to within no more than 1.5 games of the lead. However, the Beaneaters suffered a major blow when their ace John Celaya, the 1904 NL POTY, was lost for the season with severe pain and loss of motion in his pitching shoulder. Celaya was 7-3 with a 1.71 ERA, and at age 36, it is unknown whether he will be able to return to form by next season. That loss severely weakens Boston's rotation and puts a heap of pressure on the new #1, "Honker" Zauder (12-2, 1.52), and the team's offense. Batters of the Month: AL - Derrick Voisin, CF, Detroit Tigers - He hit .410 with 12 RBI and 13 runs scored. NL - Cass Bradham, 2B, Brooklyn Superbas - He hit .373 with 18 RBI and 13 runs scored. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Jassen Nelson, Detroit Tigers - He was 5-1 with a 1.81 ERA. NL - "Honker" Zauder, Boston Beaneaters - Honker showed up when Boston needed him most, after the team lost their ace Celaya. Zauder was 7-0 with a 1.29 ERA. It was the first time a pitcher has ever won 7 games in one month. American League Standings Philadelphia (A) 32 19 .627 - Boston (A) 29 23 .558 3.5 Detroit 29 23 .558 3.5 New York (A) 29 23 .558 3.5 Washington 26 26 .500 6.5 St. Louis (A) 22 30 .423 10.5 Chicago (A) 21 32 .396 12.0 Cleveland 20 32 .385 12.5 National League Standings Cincinnati 30 22 .577 - Boston (N) 29 23 .558 1.0 Brooklyn 29 24 .547 1.5 Chicago (N) 27 25 .519 3.0 Philadelphia (N) 27 25 .519 3.0 New York (N) 25 28 .472 5.5 St. Louis (N) 22 30 .423 8.0 Pittsburgh 20 32 .385 10.0 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey was back to form in May, but the Broncos continue to struggle in last place. He hit .362 with 11 RBI and 15 runs scored. Showing no ill affects from the hip injury, Allen has also successfully stolen 8 of 9 bases this season. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - He hit .154 (4-for-26) with 1 run scored. Chief Netsky, SP, New York (A) - Chief started 5 games this month. He went 2-2 with a 4.63 ERA. He improved his OAVG to .228 on the month, but his WHIP remained the same, which shows that he has had control problems (he walked 19 batters in 35 innings). He has been inserted into the Highlanders' rotation as the #3 starter. |

Teams continue to tumble around in the standings this season. At the end of June, both the NL and AL have two new league leaders. The New York Highlanders were 17-10 in June, which earned them first in the AL. They did that despite losing their #1 starter, "Johnny Cakes" Sutton, for the entire month with elbow problems. The Philadelphia Athletics struggled at 11-16, dropping to second. Washington and Boston continue to fade, while neither Detroit, St. Louis nor Cleveland has made a serious push. The Chicago Cubs, who have hovered just above .500 for five seasons now, have taken possession of first in the NL thanks to a 19-9 record in June. Second baseman Jason Tedford is having a great season, leading the league with a .382 average and 2nd in the NL with 48 RBI. The real story is the Cubs #1 pitching staff, led by "Evil" Gary Archer. He leads all of baseball with 15 wins, and he has a 2.84 ERA. Cincinnati is only 2.5 games behind the Cubs, and the Phillies are making a slow push after a 16-12 month. The Beaneaters, perhaps due to the loss of ace John Celaya, went 12-16 this month and are now one game below .500. Batters of the Month: AL - Woody Arline, RF, Washington Senators - He hit .382 with 20 RBI and 17 runs scored. NL - Jason Tedford, 2B, Chicago Cubs - He hit .392 with 21 RBI and 20 runs scored. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Doug Vanden, St. Louis Browns - He was 5-1 with a 1.01 ERA. NL - Leonard Walsh, St. Louis Cardinals - He was 3-0 with an 0.56 ERA. American League Standings New York (A) 46 33 .582 - Philadelphia (A) 43 35 .551 2.5 Washington 44 37 .543 3.0 Detroit 41 38 .519 5.0 Boston (A) 40 39 .506 6.0 St. Louis (A) 39 39 .500 6.5 Cleveland 33 46 .418 13.0 Chicago (A) 31 50 .383 16.0 National League Standings Chicago (N) 46 34 .575 - Cincinnati 43 36 .544 2.5 Philadelphia (N) 43 37 .538 3.0 Brooklyn 41 39 .512 5.0 Boston (N) 40 41 .494 6.5 St. Louis (N) 39 41 .488 7.0 New York (N) 37 43 .463 9.0 Pittsburgh 31 49 .387 15.0 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .321 with 11 RBI and 16 runs scored this month. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - The German got more regular playing time this month, appearing in just 13 games but recording 48 plate appearances. He hit .298 with 5 RBI and 5 runs scored. He has played 20 games at 1B and 10 at 3B. Kahle has been named the Reds' starter at 1B versus left-handed pitchers. Chief Netsky, SP, New York (A) - Netsky has been promoted to the team's #2 starter while "Johnny Cakes" Sutton is on the shelf. Chief was 2-3 in June with a 4.33 ERA. |

The Highlanders were 16-9 in July, expanding their lead in the American League. Several teams are huddled together in the middle of the division, but no one is closer than 6 games from first. The Cubs were 8-16 this month, and the NL has another leader. Actually, it has two. Cincinnati retook the NL lead thanks to a strong beginning to the month, but they have struggled lately, allowing the Phillies to catch up. Philadelphia was only 14-11 in July, but it was good enough to earn them a tie for first. Batters of the Month: AL - Ricky "Bird Legs" Childerhose, 1B, Philadelphia Athletics - He hit .372 with 11 RBI and 21 runs scored. NL - Jerome Uri, SS, Philadelphia Phillies - He hit .375 with 21 RBI and 12 runs scored. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Raymond Gindler, St. Louis Browns - He was 5-2 with an 0.71 ERA. NL - David Smith, St. Louis Cardinals - He was 3-1 with an 0.77 ERA. American League Standings New York (A) 62 42 .596 - Washington 57 49 .538 6.0 Detroit 56 50 .528 7.0 Philadelphia (A) 55 51 .519 8.0 St. Louis (A) 52 51 .505 9.5 Boston (A) 51 53 .490 11.0 Cleveland 44 61 .419 18.5 Chicago (A) 43 63 .406 20.0 National League Standings Cincinnati 57 48 .543 - Philadelphia (N) 57 48 .543 - Chicago (N) 54 50 .519 2.5 St. Louis (N) 54 51 .514 3.0 Boston (N) 53 52 .505 4.0 Brooklyn 51 53 .490 5.5 New York (N) 50 55 .476 7.0 Pittsburgh 43 62 .410 14.0 Ancestors: Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .360 with 5 RBI and 12 runs scored this month, but the Broncos continue to disappoint. Their pitching has been lousy, but they have several young arms on the way up. "Greasy" Holloway is 10-10 with an impressive 2.97 ERA in his rookie debut. "Musclehead" Smith made his debut this season too, but he struggled. They also have a potential future ace in "Blue" Luxford who has yet to pitch in the majors. Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Heinrich hit .357 (10-for-28) this month. He is still relegated to part-time duty, but his role is increasing little by little. He has already surpassed last season's at-bat total of 103. Chief Netsky, SP, New York (A) - Chief was 2-3 with a 4.23 ERA this month. On July 24th, he threw the first shutout of his career. It was against Detroit, and he allowed just 2 hits and 2 walks. It was also the first complete game of his young career. |

August was a very exciting month. In the AL, Detroit began the month with a 9-game winning streak and crept up on New York. The Tigers tailed off somewhat later in the month and they are now 10-games back. Washington went 17-11, but they fell to 8 games back because the Highlanders were 20-10 on the month. In the NL, Cincinnati slipped from first thanks to a 12-17 record, and they now sit 5.5 games back. Chicago blasted off with a 20-9 record, pushing them into first, but they are only a half-game ahead of Philadelphia. The Phillies were 17-12, and they maintained 2nd Place. One of the biggest stories of the month was the St. Louis Cardinals who moved into 3rd place with a 19-10 month. They went on an 11-game winning streak at the end of the month, and they have won 13 of their last 15 games. Batters of the Month: AL - Rich Hubrich, RF, Boston Pilgrims - He hit .364 with 20 RBI and 17 runs scored. NL - Jason Tedford, 2B, Chicago Cubs - He hit .378 with 22 RBI and 25 runs scored. Whiskey Allen will no longer be talking to reporters as he is tired of being stabbed in the back by them. The straw that broke the possums back are the stories going around about how unhappy he is in Cleveland and is demanding to be traded. According to Whiskey what he actually said was "Of course ah's not happy. No one be hankerin' t'lose. ah's playin' this hyar game t'win an' t'be an impo'tant part of a championship team, dawgone it. ah doesn't reckon thass evah a-gonna happen unless ah's traded, cuss it all t' tarnation."
